O'Reilly continued to compare Daily Kos to Nazis and KKK
During the July 18 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor, while discussing JetBlue's decision to sponsor the YearlyKos convention, host Bill O'Reilly asserted that the blog Daily Kos is a "hate website[]" and opined: "There's no difference between the KKK and the Nazis, who have websites, than the Daily Kos. Because the Daily Kos is basically saying, 'We're allowing this kind of thing to come on.' " O'Reilly then offered the following examples of the type of commentary that purportedly appears on Daily Kos: " 'It's good that [White House press secretary] Tony Snow has a recurrence of cancer; we hope he dies. We're sorry the assassination attempt against Dick Cheney failed; let them try again.' And on and on and on and on."
O'Reilly previously compared Daily Kos to the Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan on the July 16 edition of his program and, as Media Matters for America documented, defended this comparison the following night. O'Reilly maintained that "[t]he comparison is valid" and, in response to a viewer who said that O'Reilly "owe[d] me and thousands of others an apology" because "you should not compare anything to the Nazis," asserted: "Hate is hate, sir. That website traffics in it, as do the Nazi websites. No difference."
Additionally, the examples of Daily Kos content cited by O'Reilly appear to have come from user comments -- not Daily Kos blog posts. There is no reason to believe or suggest that the handful of offensive comments that O'Reilly singles out are in any way representative of the thousands of comments appearing on the site or the views of those who operate the site. For instance, O'Reilly's reference to Daily Kos "hop[ing]" that Snow "dies" apparently comes from a comment on a March 27 blog post. Part of the comment read:
Tony Snow... sadly the world may be better off without him, just as it would without a great many people like him. It's a strange conundrum -- you don't want to wish death on anyone, but you know that the world would likely, if not certainly be better off without the type of person that would choose to take the side of those willing to kill and abuse otherwise ordinary people in efforts to make money for themselves and their friends.
Likewise, O'Reilly's claim that Daily Kos expressed disappointment that "the assassination attempt against Dick Cheney failed" apparently comes from a comment on a satirical February 27 blog post titled "Cheney Unhurt in Bombing: Receives Medal of Honor." The comment read: "BETTER LUCK NEXT TIME, TALIBAN." On the July 16 edition of The O'Reilly Factor, O'Reilly quoted directly from both comments.
From the July 18 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor:
O'REILLY: Well, we called back -- because this just came in late this afternoon. We called back, and we said, "Look, we'd be happy to clarify this" -- as I just did -- "and we'd be happy to have Mr. Barger on the program."
But we also asked JetBlue if they had done anything for the airline -- for the military, for American military people. Because they say, "Oh, we give free tickets to a lot of people." Have you done anything for the American military? Then -- we'll be -- and I'm going to report tomorrow whether JetBlue has.
But here's what I think. The hate websites on both the left and the right -- I object to. You know I object to. Now, you're a little bit more a libertarian about this in our previous conversations.
But I say this. There's no difference between the KKK and the Nazis, who have websites, than the Daily Kos. Because the Daily Kos is basically saying, "We're allowing this kind of thing to come on. It's good that Tony Snow has a recurrence of cancer; we hope he dies. We're sorry the assassination attempt against Dick Cheney failed; let them try again." And on and on and on and on.
I mean, this is the stuff that they have every day on this website, and they revel in it.
Now, am I overstating this? Because I think hate is hate, no matter where it is.

O'Reilly banks on the stupidity of his viewers not to be able to see through the stupidity of his comments...
More than likely, it's a very good bet.
His viewers are too lazy to look up the truth.
Defiant little bugger that O'Reilly.
Guess MMFA didn't get him to back down ;-)
Bill is wrong here though.
Bill,
The folks at the Daily Kos, & Libs in general are pinko Commies.
The Cons are fascist Nazis.
Let's see if we can all get our name-calling straight...
That distinction is "prissy"! O'LIElly definitely meant that haters are haters - and on the theory that it takes one to know one, he is the reigning expert!
A more valid comparison of what the two stand for:
O'Reilly/Nazis
Anti-Union/Anti-Union
Anti-Immigration/Anti-Immigration
Security over freedom/Security over freedom
Wasp Male Power structure/Aryan Race
American Dominance/German Dominance
Any I missed?
"Hate is hate..."
See? BO is just trying to help us all get along... uh. Right?
"Hate is hate..."
Black is black
I want my baby back
It's gray, it's gray
Since she went away, Ooh-Ooh
What can I do
'Cause I-I-I-I-I'm feelin' blue
Sorry, but the hate is hate remark popped this classic 60's song by the Los Bravos into my head.
Is it Friday yet? ;-)
Not yet, but you get creative kudo's for that one!
Friday? Sure is -- 4:50am here in Saigon, as a matter of fact.
And no, you can't have your baby back!
Doug Reese
OK, had to get back in the mood. Jeter, I blame you!
K-K-K-Koward! O'Reilly's a Koward,
He's the biggest L-L-L-Liar that I abhore!
When the M-Moon shines, over the outhouse,
He'll be standing with his F-F-Falufa outside the door!
A little pre-friday Steve Miller?
'cause he's a pisser, he's a moaner
he's a prime time groaner
he sure don't listen to no one
he's a bitcher, he's a ragger
he's a blowhard bragger
he gets his lovin' from a sponge
Wooo-oo-oo-oo-oo... Wooo-oo-oo....
I think, anywhere past 5pm is Friday! I still have about 2 hours to go.
BO and Miller should setup a little song and dance routine... take it on the road :)
Revel in this Bill and Dennis. Where exactly is the forumn where Factor viewrs can post back and forth, joust with one another? Moderated or not, I know free speech mavens like FOX must have a forum somewhere? Must be buried somewhere, right?
Surely, Bill must realize that an open forum is just like Democracy, bound to be quite messy, what with all those dissenting viewpoints being tossed around without fear of arrest or torture.
Yeah,
Only a complete nitwit would try to say that blog posts reveal the particular political philosophy of those who operate a web site.
Billdoe, your pathetic...Do I sense another "Worst Person" award?
Bill O'Reilly isn't talkng about blog posts. He's talking about Comments by visitors.
Judging by the comments from O'Reilly supporters to the daily kos, I'd say O'Reilly certainly supports letting that kind of stuff on his site. Too bad you'd have to pay $50 a year to be able to see it.
Well that says it all. yes, you can criticize me, if you are willing to pay for the privlege!
What Bill fails to uderstand is , the comments are free speech. Of course the comments will be over the top, colorfull, mean spirited, hateful, joyful and every other adjective under the sun. That is why the fans and commenters are there. In Bill's dark, authoritarian world view, the operators of the web site must be filtering the comments to reflect their own bias. The only filter here is for profanity, you know the seven words. At dailykos, not so much, not sure what the filter if any is on there.
I'll bet something else, that for every "glad Tony has cancer" comment, I will bet there were dozens of posts from other liberals excouriating the poster for such a harsh, selfish attitude. No word of that though, it might prove something else, right Bill?
The comment itself doesn't appear to say what O'LIElly says it does. See the version iterated in the text above. I couldn't find reason to take offense, unless I were the one without whom someone felt the world would be a better place - and even then, I might be chagrined more than offended.
He doesn't "fail to understand." Just like any troll and propagandist, he deliberately misunderstands.
A paid liar like Billo is only interested in convincing his audience not anything so mundane as truth.
He covers his role as a fascist propagandist by calling his opponents Nazi equivalents. That way, when someone accurately describes his ideology, it becomes a case of "he said-she said" namecalling to the uneducated.
Debunked- Billo got the "worse person award" for comparing the Daily Kos with Nazi's , etc. from Keith yesterday. And KO was hilarious in his tribute to Billo as worse... as always.
He's afraid, very afraid
As is "Faux" news. This is an attempt to scare away sponsors from progressives. It's pathetic and putrid..but look at the source. I mean enough with the Nazi, KKK comparisons which are not just insulting but defamation. That line has become so blurred.
He does treat his viewers like they are stupid, easily manipulated, puppets who will now just boycott Jet Blue. Daily Kos has a number of great speakers set for this conference, and as posters have said on the thread form yesterday... Jet Blue's stock has actually risen in my eyes now. I'm going send them a thank-you.
And what does it say about his web site, that he publishes names of 10 newspapers calling it the "Hall of Shame", and tells his viewers:
"We believe the following media operations have regularly helped distribute defamatory, false or non-newsworthy information supplied by far left websites:" (list of ten, newspapers and MSNBC)
"We believe these are the worst offenders and are not worth your time and money. In the months to come we expect to add more names to this list. We recommend that you do not patronize or advertise with the above."
He encourages his base to boycot 10 news outlets (promoting financial harm), and yet offers not one thread of evidence of their supposed offenses. Wouldn't you call organizing boycots against news organizations without offering supporting evidence a form of hate?
He then does the same with 5 newspapers....on his list of the media who are soft on Child Preditors, yet he offers no evidence to back up his opinion. So now he slanders JetBlue and the Daily Kos with no evidence other than comments from a few visitors to the site.
Who is really pedaling hate here?
Bill, since you are too dumb to do your own investigation, I looked up the term fascism for you:
Various scholars attribute different characteristics to fascism, but the following elements are usually seen as its integral parts: nationalism, authoritarianism, statism, militarism, corporatism, populism, totalitarianism, anti-communism, racism and opposition to economic and political liberalism.[1][2][3]
So Bill, on a scale of 1 to 10 you hit 10 out of 10, while I hit 0 out of 10. So for all you nazi types out there, don't be dummy, be a smarty! go and join O'Reilly's party!
O'Really: There's no difference between the KKK and the Nazis, who have websites, than the Daily Kos.
OH PUHHLLLEEEEZE...
THe KKK AND TEH NAZI'S DONT' EVEN GET SGML! AND THEY CANT' RIGHT CODE, TEHY USE FRONTPAGE!!!! gUFFAW!!!1!!
O'REALLY, UR TEH FUNNY!!! LOLOLOL ROFLMAO!!1!!!! PWNED!!!1!
Hate is hate. Carrots are carrots. Bill O' has eaten carrots. Ted Bundy has eaten carrots. The Factor logic class is over for today.
My comment to O'Lielly
TROLLhouse Cookies
Blend in small bowl and set aside:
2-1/4 cups flour 1 teaspoon soda 1 teaspoon salt
In large mixing bowl, fold together:
1 cup butter, slightly softened 3/4 cup granulated sugar 3/4 cup brown sugar, firmly packed 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Mix until creamy. Add two large eggs, one at a time, beating until mixture is fluffy. Add flour mixture gradually, mixing thoroughly. Add 2 cups chocolate chips of your choice. Drop by rounded teaspoonfuls onto cookie sheets and bake at 375° for 9 minutes.
I wish I could remember Penn & Teller's recipe for exploding lemon angels.
I'm drunk with power.
If I write a hate message on 20,000 websites, the internet will suddenly gain 20,000 KKK-like websites! Cool.
I'll start with sports message boards and go from there. Onward...
He's only putting out this dubious narrative because most, if not all of the Democratic candidates are going to attend YearlyKos. The Fox News news crawl will read: "Dems Attend Nazi Rally".
That's the view I share, too. That and Fox might still be smarting from The Debate Snub. Maybe they're still hurting from The Chris Wallace Smackdown?
Authoritarians are really such sissies when it comes down to it.
It's pretty disturbing that Media Matters is actually defending the Daily Kos. Media Matters is actually a decent web site. They actually regulate these forums and don't allow profanity or any other vulgarities. If you ever go to Daily Kos and read the comments there, it's profanity left and right and all kinds of hateful comments. The Daily Kos shouldn't be defended by anybody, even those on the left. They don't represent mainstream liberal thought. They just promote an extreme far left hateful point of view.
RH,
Not being someone who frequents Kos, do you find the articles hateful or the posters of comments?
Mostly the posters of comments. They don't really regulate the forums at all over there.
Wouldn't regulating the forums over there compromise the Freedom of Speech?
"Probably because we still have freedom of speech in this country. We will always have freedom of speech unless the anti free speech far left liberals come to power in this country. And also, the reason that you want to silence these conservatives is because they are actually telling the truth, and you know you can't debate them on the issues. You have to try to silence them through censorship.
Wow, nice catch.
Waited patiently - knew Rino would step in it sooner or later. He did.
You obviously don't have the right to write anything you want on somebody elses website. That's ridiculous. The difference is that the government isn't actually regulating these sites, and I don't think they should. In my post I was talking about GOVERNMENT SUPPRESSION of free speech. I wasn't talking about PRIVATE WEBSITES being able to conduct their forums in THE WAY THAT THEY CHOOSE!
It is OK, Rino. Really, it is OK: we understand that you would wish (being a devout con) to privatize the business of limiting - even ending - Freedom of Speech.
Huh? What in the world are you talking about? Do you really think that each individual poster has the right to post whatever he or she wants here? Do you think that Media Matters' policy is unconstitutional because they are violating freedom of speech?
Har! Conley. He shoulda cut & run when he had the chance.Ain't that fun, catching the BS in black & white?
Why would I want to "cut and run" on this? My position has been very consistent. The government shouldn't censor the internet, the radio, or television. Private radio hosts and owners of private internet sites can run their business however they choose.
So what your saying is that while the government should not regulate free speech private entities should regulate speech. So where exactly will free speech be? Free speech is the exchange and debate of ideas. Where are these debates supposed to happen? I think a website that chooses not to censor comments is closer to the intention of the founders than one who does. Every owner has the right to censor what they want but it does not mean that it should be supported. The less censorship the better.
That's just a business decision. MMFA has chosen for whatever reasons that they'd prefer to (very lightly) moderate these discussions. Other sites don't. It's a huge job for a popular site. If you do any moderation, you pretty much have to moderate everything, or you open yourself up to various liabilities.
I've seen some fairly ugly crap at conservative sites. Neither DailyKOS nor liberals own a monopoly on rude postings.
"MMFA has chosen for whatever reasons that they'd prefer to (very lightly) moderate these discussions"
Very lightly? They won't even let you write words that are used in everyday conversations. They won't even let you write the word "sl*t." I would say that's regulating it quite a bit.
Writing the simplest of code to limit someone from entering various vulgarities is not the same as actively moderating a message board. It involves no human interaction whatsoever beyond writing a couple lines of code.
Your very broad standards would make almost everything the same as the KKK and nazis.
BO has guests who say horrible things, so according to BO, he is the same as the KKK and nazis. Likewise for youtube and any other lightly moderated place on the internet.
"Tony Snow... sadly the world may be better off without him, just as it would without a great many people like him. It's a strange conundrum -- you don't want to wish death on anyone, but you know that the world would likely, if not certainly be better off without the type of person that would choose to take the side of those willing to kill and abuse otherwise ordinary people in efforts to make money for themselves and their friends. " (See the text above.)
That is patently inoffensive - and a far cry from O'LIElly's "hop[ing]" that Snow "dies". I continue to maintain (as earlier) that chagrin would be more suited to the subject of the comment, than offense.
In the latest issue of Paris Business Review, there was an interview with the CEO of JetBlue, and he mentioned that they are seriously considering pulling their ads from websites like DailyKos, after seeing the detrimental effect on the French economy of the O'Reilly-instigated boycott against France.
And just when I thought that the Paris Business Review had gone out of business after reporting on the French O-lielly boycott!
:)
Business did pretty much come to a stand-still in Paris during the boycott, hence the PBR (as we subscribers call it) had to make do with a scaled back quarterly magazine.
But the centerfolds are still the hottest of nonexistent magazines referenced by right wing lying blowhards.
How about a bona fide rightie comparing the bushies to nazis?
http://www.counterpunch.org/roberts07162007.html
Thanks for that link, Mary - WOW!
I have bandying about the incredible statistic that 17% of self-identified Republicans (and there are a lot fewer of those these days) favor impeachment of Bush and Cheney!
Hey! Some of those guys really are patriots! Some are actually conservative!
They need to join with us and kick the fascists the hell out of government - before it is too late.
When OReilly 's ambush crew comes out to Yearly KOS can all of you people do the following and turn the tables on the ambusher:
That is, there is one sure fire way to counteract an O’Reilly Ambush. The first words out of the ambushees mouth have to be Mackris. Turn the tables on the Oreilly Ambusher by asking whether he ever witnessed Oreilly sexually harrass Mackris. Ask why it has been reported that more than a million dollars was paid to settle her claim? Ask whether Oreilly had to pay any of it or whether Fox paid it all? Ask whether the ambusher ever witnessed sexually harrassed any other women at Fox news? Ask whether he has ever seen Oreilly’s Loofah. Just keep asking Mackris type questions and its guaranteed the cameras will shut off and the Ambusher will run away. Better yet, pull out your cell phone video and record yourself asking these questions of the ambusher.
Sheer Genius!
I love it! Mr White, you have a fan.
No one is going to get his or her message through with radical diatribe and name-calling. As Mr. O's rhetoric reeks of intolerance and anger, so do the Daily Kos's comments and sometimes writings. Both voices are ideological voices. I agree with the post, why is MM supporting Kos? MM is about sleuthing for the truth in a realm of spin and special/self interest NOT slanted facts and collations that enrage and polarize the public/audience. We must be mindful and build bridges, please.
Lastly, I feel MM covered Kos, because it’s audience most likely reads political blogs, and perhaps they might be a fan of Kos.
Here is an interesting site about echo chambers (both sides) [link to www.ojr.org]
I guess this logic makes YouTube (ergo Google) a veritable Fourth Reich, given the presence of what seems to me like hundreds of times more numerous "hateful" comments on its website. In fact, they must both hate and love just about everyone and everything, given the variety of comments you see there. I wonder how it is that Google holds so many paradoxical positions.
Wait a minute, isn't this the same guy who called for the destruction of a city (San Francisco) by Al Quida? How isn't that KKK/Nazi level hate speech?
O'Reilly also conveniently doesn't mention that Daily Kos honors the fallen EVERY NIGHT through the IGTNT (I Got The News Today) series, putting names and (occasionally) faces to the fallen that come home under cover of darkness. Is that the sign of a site that breeds hate?
As for filtering, it's done by the community -- there is the vast wasteland called Hidden Comments, open only to those strong of heart and who have earned the title "Trusted User", where one can find the comments that the community have deemed too over the top. ("Trusted Users" are the only ones who can give comments "troll" ratings -- but with great power comes great responsibility, Padawan, not to abuse that privilege for petty purposes...)
Yes, that little tidbit of "news" does seem to have gone by the wayside these days. With his continued lying and exaggerated claims of other people perhaps it should be drug out and examined by everyone again.
