The July 20 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes, previewing a discussion of comments Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) made July 17 in support of age-appropriate sex education, aired video footage of a woman applying a condom to a cucumber as co-host Sean Hannity asked, "Later, what is it that Barack Obama was thinking when he said he supported sex ed for kindergartners?" But the Obama campaign has made clear what he meant. Obama campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki reportedly told David Brody of the Christian Broadcasting Network: "Barack Obama supports sensible, community-driven education for children because, among other things, he believes it could help protect them from pedophiles. A child's knowledge of the difference between appropriate and inappropriate touching is crucial to keeping them safe from predators." Explaining his views in 2004, as Media Matters for America noted, Obama reportedly said, "Nobody's suggesting that kindergartners are going to be getting information about sex in the way that we think about it," but rather that kindergartners should be taught about "inappropriate touching" and that "[i]f they ask a teacher 'where do babies come from,' that providing information that the fact is that it's not a stork is probably not an unhealthy thing." Later, co-host Alan Colmes said that "Barack Obama never said that we should teach in kindergarten things like condoms," but the program again showed the footage of a woman applying a condom to a cucumber just prior to Colmes' statement.

During a second preview of the segment, Fox News showed footage of a woman unwrapping a condom as Colmes said, "Still ahead tonight, Barack Obama's critics think this is what the senator has in mind when he talks about sex education in our schools for youngsters." A third preview showed footage of Obama, while co-host Sean Hannity said, "Coming up next, Barack Obama clamors for age-appropriate sex education in our schools, but isn't teaching America's kindergartners about the birds and the bees anything but appropriate?"

From the July 20 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes:

HANNITY: Later, what is it that Barack Obama was thinking when he said he supported sex ed for kindergartners? We'll update that situation straight ahead.

[...]

COLMES: And still ahead tonight, Barack Obama's critics think this is what the senator has in mind when he talks about sex education --

HANNITY: Oh --

COLMES: -- in our schools for youngsters. We're going to debate, though, the growing sex-ed contro -- because you know that's really not what it is. Later is the CIA at war with itself? Coming up.

[...]

HANNITY: Coming up next: Barack Obama clamors for age-appropriate sex education in our schools, but isn't teaching America's kindergartners about the birds and the bees anything but appropriate?

[...]

COLMES: Well, conservatives continue to blast Barack Obama for his stance on teaching age-appropriate sex ed to kindergartners. Is that what he really said, though? The question being raised by many is what, exactly is age appropriate? Should kids learn about safe sex and condoms, or is the abstinence the only lesson that should be taught?

Joining us now, radio talk show's Janet Parshall and sex expert and Penthouse sex columnist Dr. Victoria Zdrok. And Janet, let me start by pointing out that Barack Obama never said we should teach in kindergarten things like condoms and -- what he said exactly is we should send -- it should be -- it should be age-appropriate. It should be scientifically based. Nobody is suggesting, he said, that kindergartners are going to be getting information about sex in the way we think about it. So let's be clear what Barack Obama said in the first place.

Now this is one tease/preview that is unconscionable, even for Fox News.  If Alan Colmes had any program control whatsoever instead of a being Sean's whipping post, he would have nixed this promo from the get go.  Pitiful.

          Snoop,

Maybe you should be more specific about the *variety* cucumber...

Or I'll have to figure you might resemble one of these:

pickling cucumbers tend to be shorter, thicker, less regularly-shaped, and have bumpy skin with tiny white- or black-dotted spines

Mediterranean cucumbers are small, smooth-skinned and mild.

           ;-)

This "footage" obviously came from Hannity's personal library. Who knew he would have an opportunity to air it nationally when lying about Obama's policy positions? It's called "serendipity", and Hannity couldn't be happier.

It's really a shame for Obama, because the way Fox News and it's viewers treat the news, he isn't shaking this story anytime soon. Fox (at least when Democrats are concerned) is virtually ambivalent to the truth. Don't expect a retraction or correction from these guys. And since most Fox News viewers get their news exclusively from Fox, this story will persist with these viewers, uncorrected, probably forever.

It's amazing the raw deal Democrats get from Fox. And yet when they decline to go on Fox, they're ridiculed for being spineless cowards. Can you blame them? Obama was advocating programs to help fight pedophila, but what gets reported? Essentially: "Barack Obama wants to teach kindergarteners how to F$%#!!!" Unreal.

It's shades of Al Gore and his internet all over again. Damn that "liberal media bias."

I would venture to say that any person, or least voter, who gets their news exclusively, as you say, from Fox News, is most likely not even considering casting their ballot for Obama in any sceanrio.

So the damage, accepting your exclusivity claim, is minimal at best.

While my claim of exclusivity was admittedly by observation, these viewers certainly exist, and it doesn't mean the story stops with them. These Foxbots can easliy spread their misinformation to the general public via word of mouth. That way people who may be considering Obama as a candidate (and are not as skeptical of our media as you or I) may think twice upon hearing that Obama wants to teach 5 year olds to have sex.

I doubt that all the complaints and death threats lodged at that school superintendent over Fox's bogus "Ham Sandwich" story originated exclusively Fox News viewers.

Make no mistake, Colmes is as much of a sleazebag as Hannity. Pretending to be the 'balance' on this show is just part of the propaganda. Witness how he says that no one is implying Obama wants condom education for kindergartners. It's the biggest single lie of the segment. His own show is clearly implying this very notion. People really need to start dragging these dirt-bags into court for libel if for no other reason than to expose their methods and their mission. Just laughing them off and claiming that everyone knows what Fox is up to ignores the influence they have on the public. My take on it is that they help allow people to maintain a position of ignorance. It's no mistake that a shamefully high percentage of people still believe the old lie that Saddam was behind 9-11. It's also no mistake that polls show regular Fox viewers to be more often misinformed about what is going on in the world and that their ignorance helps them support right-wing causes. It's time for society in general and not just Media Matters to go after these sleazebags and expose their fundamental lie. 'Fair and Balanced.' It's only funny if you're not trying to discuss current events with a Fox viewer.

For me, it isn't even about Hannity's expected partisanship and spin control toward everything Republican good, and everything Democratic, bad......who isn't aware of his bias?

It's more about the impotent Alan Colmes and how he rarely, if ever, offers a strong counterpoint to Sean's condescending manner.  A lively partisan debate may be watchable, even enjoyable if Colmes held his own instead of acting like he's apologizing for his meekly voiced opinions. This is the reason this show is so annoying, and off my shopping list.

I agree with your statement. If one looks at the items on MMFA tagged with Alan Colmes, they are almost all because he has done something potent and  confrontive. Amazing that it's an item of interest when he does speak up. That's his job! At least, that's the premise of the show: Right vs Left or something like that.

They chose Colmes because he was a wimpy, self-described moderate, and a bad comedian. They knew he would never be too vocal, or win a serious debate.

      See?  They DON'T work!

I think Sean and FOX NEWS should be congratulated for trying to educate America about the failure of condoms to stop the population explosion of cucumbers.

I mean, they're everywhere!  There are cucumbers by the millions at farmers markets and grocery stores.  And pickles!  Have you walked down the pickle and pickle relish aisle lately?

No matter how good the condoms are and no matter how careful you are,  condoms are  just a complete and utter failure when it comes to putting the brakes on cucumber procreation.

Anybody who thinks there is anything equivalent to the Fox News/Drudge/talk radio echo chamber on the progressive/liberal side of the ledger is dead wrong.

      It's pure propaganda.

And now Murdoch is on the verge of buying the Wall Street Journal which will give him a national print voice for this kind of nonsense.

24/7/365 of cable and 365 days of print propaganda.

The fascists or nazis didn't do it any better.

My life will never be the same after reading these post. I laughed so hard my side is aching.

What I see in all seriousness, if I may be. Does Faux News drug test these "News Commentators". I personally think that the American People need to start Community Meetings, of everyday Americans and stop listening to these news programs. All this rediculous diversion tactics, as well as absurb stories to stick in some minds that just catch talking points here and there, We still want to know the truth about Iraq, healthcare, Global Warming...No wonder they like Bush, they are great at putting up smoke screens and confusing the heck out of everyone, When they are not trying to terrorize people with "increased chatter". Which is in their own Heads, or maybe they need to use more fixodent in their Dentures or simply put on a coat. LOL!

      Everyone have a great Night!

Sean is revealing his true character to the public. He makes "Austin Powers" look like a saint (my apologies to Mike Myers).

He pretends to be a moral man, but he is not. It's all just an act. He is one sick puppy.

Just think of how ratings would have soared if they used a real penis.

Then imagine Hannity, in his own small way, for the sake of God and country, volunteering for the demonstration.
