Fox's Gibson claimed "George Soros is after Bill O'Reilly ... over some benign remarks"

SUMMARY: Fox News' John Gibson called the controversy over Bill O'Reilly's recent remarks a "fabricated flap over some benign remarks Bill made on his radio show, but it has been turned on its ear by George Soros' Media Matters," which is "dedicated to discrediting conservatives and folks like Bill" through "the purposeful misinterpretation of one's words." Gibson did not support his claim that Media Matters "misinterpret[ed]" O'Reilly's words; moreover, Soros has never given money to Media Matters.

On the September 26 edition of Fox News' The Big Story, during his nightly "My Word" segment, host John Gibson asserted that billionaire philanthropist "George Soros is after Bill O'Reilly and he's enlisted the help of CNN and NBC," adding: "This is the fabricated flap over some benign remarks Bill made on his radio show, but it has been turned on its ear by George Soros' Media Matters, a website that was funded by Soros and is dedicated to discrediting conservatives and folks like Bill, who don't toe the Soros line. They do this by the purposeful misinterpretation of one's words." Gibson provided no evidence for his accusation that Media Matters for America "misinterpret[ed]" O'Reilly's words; in fact, in noting his remarks following his dinner at a Harlem restaurant, Media Matters provided the transcript and audio with their full context. Moreover, as repeatedly and exhaustively demonstrated, Soros has never given money to Media Matters, either directly or through another organization.

During the show, Gibson also stated: "It isn't just Bill. Media Matters has done it to me too. NBC News has been using Media Matters as a script service for some time now, with certain anchors over there just lifting misinterpretations wholesale from the website and sending the Media Matters words directly to the teleprompter. Yes, great journalism at a place with names like Russert and Williams, and now CNN has joined in." Gibson did not identify the "certain anchors" who have purportedly been "just lifting misinterpretations wholesale from the website and sending the Media Matters words directly to the teleprompter."

Gibson concluded his "My Word" segment by asserting: "I can't speak for Bill, but as for myself, I am proud to be on the Soros hit list. As for NBC and CNN, they should be embarrassed. It's real journalists inside those two places, they need to stand up and revolt."

Gibson also falsely asserted that Media Matters was a "George Soros-funded operation" on the September 25 edition of his nationally syndicated radio program. Gibson made the claim in response to a recent Media Matters item documenting his September 21 statement that while there are "black devils stalking their streets," those protesting in support of the so-called Jena Six only "wanna fight the white devil."

From the September 26 edition of Fox News' The Big Story with John Gibson:

GIBSON: And a liberal, far-left website that aims to discredit conservatives is going after Fox's own Bill O'Reilly, taking a benign comment and turning it into something it is not. I have some ideas of why Bill O'Reilly is being targeted. "My Word," coming up next on The Big Story.

[...]

GIBSON: Now it's time for "My Word." George Soros is after Bill O'Reilly, and he's enlisted the help of CNN and NBC. This is the fabricated flap over some benign remarks Bill made on his radio show, but it has been turned on its ear by George Soros' Media Matters, a website that was funded by Soros and is dedicated to discrediting conservatives and folks like Bill who don't toe the Soros line. They do this by the purposeful misinterpretation of one's words.

It isn't just Bill. Media Matters has done it to me, too. NBC News has been using Media Matters as a script service for some time now, with certain anchors over there just lifting misinterpretations wholesale from the website and sending the Media Matters words directly to the teleprompter. Yes, great journalism at a place with names like Russert and Williams, and now CNN has joined in. Why? O'Reilly's the big kahuna of cable news, and neither of those networks can break out of 10th place in a three network race, unless they bring him down.

Remember the name Soros. His Open Society Institute has just released its 2006 report on the way it has spent Soros' millions, $74 million just this year. Did you know that in addition to funding groups to try to kneecap Bill O'Reilly and me, Soros' stooges have also cut a $720,000 check to the so called NASA whistleblower who claimed the U.S. government was covering up global warming? Investors Business Daily has outlined all of this in a series of recent editorials after checking the records. Soros money has funded lawyers to defeat President Bush on his efforts to track terrorist cell phone calls and matching airline passenger lists with the names of known terrorists. As the IBD asked its readers, "Do you feel safer now that you live in Soros' world?" I would think not. I would also think you would think about the way George Soros' has funneled his millions into the bank accounts of groups dedicated to sliming and destroying people. Soros' money is behind MoveOn.org, too, and you've seen what they do. Soros doesn't like Bill, and Soros doesn't like me. I can't speak for Bill, but as for myself, I am proud to be on the Soros hit list. As for NBC and CNN, they should be embarrassed. It's real journalists inside those two places, they need to stand up and revolt. That is "My Word."

But was there a chance that Gibby was drunk? Because sometimes he does seem that he's drunk...LOL!

Here's a novel concept...PLAY WHAT BILL O'REILLY SAID. You report. We decide. You haven't reported what he said, so how can we decide? You just tell us what we should think about it!!

Another far-left wacko idea: tell us something, ANYTHING substantive about how Media Matters has deliberately misinformed!! Show a story they did, say why it's not true. REPORT it. Let us decide. Give us facts, not commentary...

I knew it wouldn't be long before Goerge Soros was blamed by FOX. Stay tuned to see if they can work Bill or Hillary Clinton into the equation. Hell, blame John Kerry, too...

Has Billo ever admitted when he was wrong in something he said...or the way he said it? Does anyone on FOX know how to say the words "I was wrong"? Roger Ailes must have put clauses in all the FOXsters' contracts that they are forbidden to admit wrong.

You know, I don't think this works with anybody, John--not even your people.

Your opponents attack you, or your band camp buddy Bill--and you whine about it. "Oh this far-left site is telling lies about us! And they're funded by an eeevil billionaire!"

And you don't refute their lies--which is kind of hard since it's mostly quotes--you complain about it. You whine.

We know what you are, John--but even the freepers expect you to fight. Go on, rip the argument to shreds! Even they expect you should fight!

But you're sitting there and expecting that they should buy that it's just so horribly unfair that he or you would actually have to face opposition! That, after all,is not what you're here fore1 You're here just to spout opinions and slander people and never, ever, answer for it.

Even the trolld enjoy a fight. But you hide in your immune studio and whine that Davey called Billy a name!

It's all so ridiculous. Everyone knows that as long as Bill keeps the ratings up at Fox he will always have a home there. He could have actually said I couldn't believe those n-wordss used knives and forks just like White people and I beleived he would still have a home at  Fox. They would think of some reason to explain it away to the people that are important to them, their loyal wing nut viewers.

I don't mind the nuts watching him so much.  It's the ones who would vote Democrat if they were properly informed.   It's the senior citizens who maybe don't have internet access and get most of their "news" from Fox and then go out and vote.   That's the sad part of this.

I would say that the only thing sillier than Gibson's claim that Soros is out to get O'Reilly, is believing that some people choose not to vote for Democrats because they are ill-informed, or they are just too old to know how to work the internet.

I'm confused.  Isn't that the same assumption conservatives make about the supposed "librul media" and all?

Considering that Fox "News" is inarguably solidly conservative, why wouldn't it hold true that their viewers are being unduly influenced as well?

I would think the logic would be more convincing considering Fox "news" is much more obviously conservative than the rest of the media are supposedly liberal.

In this case...the aching side...was a result of uncontrollable laughter from the "too dumb or too old" liberal comment.

Lynn, as I've said before, FOX sole reason for existence is to keep the 30% right wing loony base of the Republican Party on the reservation and pissed off enough to vote. FOX could not care less if normal people find Billo, Hannity and all of FOX offensive. Billo does his job well...the loonies love him.

I love they have this puppy dog-ish picture of O'Reilly and a ghastly picture of Soros. Why doesn't Soros come forward and sue their asses for using his name the way they do? If he doesn't fund the organizations the way they say he does, he should come out and say so. I like Media Matters, but it seems they don't listen to or believe you when you state that Soros does not fund Media Matters. How about Soros stepping up and saying so himself?

As we can see, media has not only failed to 'matter', it has been completely hornswoggled in a circular sideshow of offhand 'comment' rebuttals here.

Common tater Gibson's commentary in (Sta. Ex., Ogden Publishing Corp., 9/27/07, A3) says the Iranian leader had the right to speak, but just in the wrong place.

      Here's a rebuttal:

Letter to the Commentator: Doug Gibson You have a right to speak in print too Doug.  So why don’t you find something to talk about?   Iran is harsh on traditionally banished groups by hard line orthodox religions, either their clerics issue the death warrants or the politicians–why don’t you sort it out? America lets fluoropoisoning skate free while pandemic mental retardation confounds the whole of the medical establishment, and Doug...the headline reads “Tax Hike for Health?” (Sta Ex, 9/27/07, A1)...we only need the taxes paid to staff DA’s offices and run a criminal justice division to pay off.  And you know what I’m talking about.  Big time bupkis honkeysaurus official corruptilians who need to be captured and subdued like the dangerous attempted and in commission of murder, criminals that they are. You can prattle away about non-consequential standard media center stage distractions, or have a right to on your own time with friends, but the editorial page is for more substance and that substance is grit.  Get some. And you even....had the page 3 AP about the New England Journal of Medicine reporting the shocking federal study that finds no relationship between neruopsychological impairments as developmental disorders, and the hoax of vaccine-injury from thimerosal...you either don’t care or don’t have the first clue.  Like to talk about goddamned Iran all the time then why don’t you up and move there!   Writingindependence,Ogden

P.S.  “You’re fired.”–D. Trump   And so are your ‘momo-fascist buddies’ fool, like Ebengeezer Screw down in SLC.  Children are being raped with fluoropoisoning and maimed retarded in Ebengeezer’s Utah.  These Iranians you want to point the finger at, they are too far away to care about.  People know where the threat lies here at home.
