Like radio show, transcript on RushLimbaugh.com selectively edits his "phony soldiers" comments

Media Matters for America has previously noted how, during the September 28 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, in response to Media Matters' documentation of his recent characterization of service members who advocate U.S. withdrawal from Iraq as "phony soldiers," Rush Limbaugh selectively edited an audio clip of the September 26 exchange while calling it "the entire transcript" of the segment. Limbaugh claimed that "Media Matters had the transcript, but they selectively choose what they want to make their point. Here is, it runs about 3 minutes and 13 seconds, the entire transcript, in context, that led to this so-called controversy." Excised from the clip, however, was a full 1 minute and 35 seconds of discussion that occurred between Limbaugh's original "phony soldiers" comment and his subsequent reference to "one soldier ... Jesse MacBeth."

The transcript (subscription required) of the first segment of the first hour of his September 28 broadcast posted on Limbaugh's website, which Limbaugh described as being the "anatomy of a smear," does not make clear how much time elapsed between Limbaugh's "phony soldiers" remark and his discussion of MacBeth -- or even that any time did elapse: Limbaugh's transcript does not provide any notation or ellipsis to indicate that there is, in fact, a break in the transcript of the September 26 clip he used.

From the RushLimbaugh.com transcript of the September 28 broadcast of Premiere Radio Networks' The Rush Limbaugh Show, with the addition (in boldface) of the 1 minute and 35 seconds of discussion that was omitted:

RUSH: That's really rich. John Kerry, whose own soldiers, his own personnel, fellow soldiers in those swift boats, at least many of them who said he was lying about his supposed heroics, this is the same John Kerry who went out and insulted the intelligence of the troops, thereby torpedoing his own 2008 presidential candidacy. His statement includes these words: This disgusting attack from Rush Limbaugh, cheerleader for the chicken hawk wing of the far right is an insult to American troops. I was not talking as Contessa Brewer said here about the anti-war movement generally. I was talking about one soldier with that phony soldier comment, Jesse MacBeth. They had exactly what I'm going to play for you. It's Michael J. Fox all over again. Media Matters had the transcript. But they selectively choose what they want to make their point. It runs about three minutes and 13 seconds, the entire transcript, in context, that led to this so-called controversy:

RUSH ARCHIVE: It's not possible intellectually to follow these people.

CALLER: No, it's not. And what's really funny is they never talk to real soldiers. They like to pull these soldiers that come up out of the blue and spout to the media.

RUSH: The phony soldiers.

CALLER: The phony soldiers. If you talk to any real soldier and they're proud to serve, they want to be over in Iraq, they understand their sacrifice and they're willing to sacrifice for the country.

RUSH: They joined to be in Iraq.

[begin Limbaugh edit]

CALLER: A lot of them -- the new kids, yeah.

LIMBAUGH: Well, you know where you're going these days, the last four years, if you signed up. The odds are you're going there or Afghanistan or somewhere.

CALLER: Exactly, sir. And, and my other comment was -- and the reason I was calling for -- was to report to Jill about the fact that we didn't, didn't find any weapons of mass destruction. Actually, we have found weapons of mass destruction in chemical agents that [inaudible] been using against us for awhile now.

I've done two tours in Iraq. I just got back in June and there were many instances of -- since [inaudible] not know what they're using in their IEDs [improvised explosive devices]. They're using mustard artillery rounds. The ex-artillery rounds in their IEDs.

Because they didn't know what they were using, they didn't do it right, and so it just kind of -- it, it didn't really hurt anybody but there are -- those munitions are over there, it's just -- it's a huge desert. If they've buried it somewhere, we're never gonna find it.

LIMBAUGH: Well, you know, that's a moot point for me right now --

MIKE: Rush --

LIMBAUGH: -- the weapons of mass destruction. We gotta get beyond that. We're, we're there. What -- who cares if, if -- we all know they were there and, and Mahmoud [Ahmadinejad, Iranian president] even admitted it in one of his speeches here about -- talkin' about Saddam using the poison mustard gas or whatever it is on his own people -- but that, that's moot, right? What, what's more important is all this is taking place now in the midst of the surge working.

And all of these anti-war Democrats are getting even more hell-bent on pulling out of there, which means that success on the part of you and, and your colleagues over there is, is a great threat to them.

[end Limbaugh edit]

RUSH: It's frustrating and maddening, and why they must be kept in the minority. I want to thank you, Mike, for calling. I appreciate it very much.

Here is a Morning Update that we did recently, talking about fake soldiers. This is a story of who the left props up as heroes. They have their celebrities and one of them was Army Ranger Jesse MacBeth. Now, he was a "corporal." I say in quotes. Twenty-three years old. What made Jesse MacBeth a hero to the anti-war crowd wasn't his Purple Heart; it wasn't his being affiliated with post-traumatic stress disorder from tours in Afghanistan and Iraq. No. What made Jesse MacBeth, Army Ranger, a hero to the left was his courage, in their view, off the battlefield, without regard to consequences. He told the world the abuses he had witnessed in Iraq, American soldiers killing unarmed civilians, hundreds of men, women, even children. In one gruesome account, translated into Arabic and spread widely across the Internet, Army Ranger Jesse MacBeth describes the horrors this way: "We would burn their bodies. We would hang their bodies from the rafters in the mosque."

Now, recently, Jesse MacBeth, poster boy for the anti-war left, had his day in court. And you know what? He was sentenced to five months in jail and three years probation for falsifying a Department of Veterans Affairs claim and his Army discharge record. He was in the Army. Jesse MacBeth was in the Army, folks, briefly. Forty-four days before he washed out of boot camp. Jesse MacBeth isn't an Army Ranger, never was. He isn't a corporal, never was. He never won the Purple Heart, and he was never in combat to witness the horrors he claimed to have seen. You probably haven't even heard about this. And, if you have, you haven't heard much about it. This doesn't fit the narrative and the template in the Drive-By Media and the Democrat Party as to who is a genuine war hero. Don't look for any retractions, by the way. Not from the anti-war left, the anti-military Drive-By Media, or the Arabic websites that spread Jesse MacBeth's lies about our troops, because the truth for the left is fiction that serves their purpose. They have to lie about such atrocities because they can't find any that fit the template of the way they see the US military. In other words, for the American anti-war left, the greatest inconvenience they face is the truth.

RUSH: That was the transcript from yesterday's program, talking about one phony soldier. The truth for the left is fiction that serves their purpose, which is exactly the way the website, Media Matters, generated this story, fiction, out of context, did so knowingly. What is amazing is that after all of the examples of how this organization is simply a Democrat Party Hillary Clinton front group; how they constantly do this; how they take things out of context and embarrass themselves and get things wrong; they still have credible so-called journalists and others, members of Congress, Democrat Party, who treat what they say as gospel. Not one member of the media, not one congressman, nobody has called our office to ask, "Did you really say this? And what did you mean by it?" The reason this does not work, ladies and gentlemen, is that I have a 19-and-a-half-year record on this program of being one of the most devoted supporters of US military personnel in uniform that there is.

Nice "...in uniform..." qualifier there, limpaugh.  Is there something about the uniform that spurs your devotion, something you're not telling?  Something Jeff Gannon might understand?  Hmmmm?

The funny thing is that context kills him on this.

"They like to pull these soldiers that come up out of the blue and spout to the media. RUSH: The phony soldiers."

It's obvious who he's referring to: "soldiers that come up out of the blue and spout to the media". He can edit all he wants...his apologists can kvetch all they want. His own words prove him a liar.

I think the confusion for me stems from how many shows Rush did.  Is this correct:

            1. Sept 26: he calls dissenters phony soldiers.

            2. Sept 28: he edits the transcript to make it seem that he meant only one soldier.

            3. Sept 29: he broadcasts yet another show called "anatomy of a smear" to defend  himself.

Copious linked to 3, which has nothing to do with MMFA's claim on #2.

            Is that right?

Wow! I went to 3:30 seconds, and guess what I found? That Rush cut the section in the *exact* way that MMFA said he did. You obviously didn't read the MMFA article closely. Rush cut out the part in which the caller talks about the WMDs--exactly as MMFA claimed.

(Do you really think MMFA would make such a glaring mistake that would be caught and expose them to ridicule?)

What you should do now is admit you are wrong and that Rush is breathtakingly dishonest.

                  Let's simplify this for you.

"CALLER: The phony soldiers. If you talk to any real soldier and they're proud to serve, they want to be over in Iraq, they understand their sacrifice and they're willing to sacrifice for the country."

That is a blanket statement referring to every soldier who doesn't want to be in Iraq.  "Any real soldier...want(s) to be over in Iraq".  Here's Limbaugh's response:

"RUSH: They joined to be in Iraq."

That's agreement.  Then he lets this guy blather about WMD's for a minute and a half without any effort to correct his viewpoint on all those phony soldiers.  Then he cuts that part out so it looks like he immediately clarified what he personally meant by "phony soldiers", while the full transcript shows he didn't exactly take exception to the caller's comments.

I don't know about you, but if I was running a show and someone called in and talked about soldiers who supported the war being traitors or some such, I would tear them a new one.  You do not smear our soldiers for political purposes, and that's exactly the sentiment that Rush agreed with.

I think this is the stupidest or most dishonest post ever. I don't know how else to characterize it. The portion circled by MMFA is the part where Rush cut out the text. I'll just have to repeat what MMFA to point out your dishonesty.

RUSH: They joined to be in Iraq.

EXCERPTED TEXT where the red circle is. In the original version the caller says  (amongst other things) "Exactly, sir. And, and my other comment was -- and the reason I was calling for -- was to report to Jill about the fact that we didn't, didn't find any weapons of mass destruction. Actually, we have found weapons of mass destruction in chemical agents that [inaudible] been using against us for awhile now."

That part is not in the video clip you linked to.

You are lying right through your teeth. I guess you think if you get on here and call me a damned liar others, who don't want to go to the audio, will either believe you or at least doubt MMFA. There is not talk of WMDs in the video. It is not there.

Your lie is so blatant it is like we are both looking at the sun rising over the ocean and you saying "the sun isn't rising today," even as it cast its light over the water and the sand and blinds us.

First there was overkill on O'Reilly, now Rush. Can we get back to real misinformation ? The msm did not cover the GOP top candidates missing out on the PBS debate regarding African Americans, yet no major coverage of this, also Alan Keyes entering the race. Instead its been O'Reilly and now Rush and these two are not going anywhere.

On Monday, Congressman Mark Udall will be introducing a resolution to condemn Rush:

Honoring all Americans serving in the Armed Forces of the United States and condemning the attack by broadcaster Rush Limbaugh on the integrity and professionalism of some of those Americans.

On Monday I will introduce a resolution honoring all Americans serving in the Armed Forces and condemning this unwarranted attack on the integrity and professionalism of those in the Armed Forces who choose to exercise their constitutional right to express their opinions regarding U.S. military action in Iraq. Sincerely, Mark Udall

Congress Terrorism Administration September 28, 2007 Mr. Mark P. Mays CEO, Clear Channel Communications Inc. 200 East Basse Road San Antonio, TX 78209

Dear Mr. Mays, At the time we sign this letter, 3,801 American soldiers have been killed in Iraq, and another 27,936 have been wounded. 160,000 others awoke this morning on foreign sand, far from home, to face the danger and uncertainty of another day at war. Although Americans of goodwill debate the merits of this war, we can all agree that those who serve with such great courage deserve our deepest respect and gratitude. That is why Rush Limbaugh’s recent characterization of troops who oppose the war as “phony soldiers” is such an outrage. Our troops are fighting and dying to bring to others the freedoms that many take for granted. It is unconscionable that Mr. Limbaugh would criticize them for exercising the fundamentally American right to free speech. Mr. Limbaugh has made outrageous remarks before, but this affront to our soldiers is beyond the pale. The military, like any community within the United States, includes members both for and against the war. Senior generals, such as General John Batiste and Paul Eaton, have come out against the war while others have publicly supported it. A December 2006 poll conducted by the Military Times found just 35 percent of service members approved of President Bush’s handling of the war in Iraq, compared to 42 percent who disapproved. From this figure alone, it is clear that Mr. Limbaugh’s insult is directed at thousands of American service members. Active and retired members of our armed forces have a unique perspective on the war and offer a valuable contribution to our national debate. In August, seven soldiers wrote an op-ed expressing their concern with the current strategy in Iraq. Tragically, since then, two of those seven soldiers have made the ultimate sacrifice in Iraq. Thousands of active troops and veterans were subjected to Mr. Limbaugh’s unpatriotic and indefensible comments on your broadcast. We trust you will agree that not a single one of our sons, daughters, neighbors and friends serving overseas is a “phony soldier.” We call on you to publicly repudiate these comments that call into question their service and sacrifice and to ask Mr. Limbaugh to apologize for his comments. Sincerely, _____________________ Senator Harry Reid Majority Leader _____________________ Senator Richard Durbin Assistant Majority Leader _____________________ Senator Charles Schumer Vice Chairman Democratic Conference _____________________ Senator Patty Murray Secretary Democratic Conference

It's only in your mind that their patriotisim is being challenged here.  See how many others pick up on this and you'll be frustrated over how so few have joined  your cause.  Accordong to MMFA even the AP wasn't stupid enough to fall for this one.

Rush Limbaugh, like all the other members of the amateur Goebbels brigade, is a thin skinned bully who can dish it out but can't take it. Any criticism is automatically labeled as a smear or an attack by the liberal media or to use O'Reilly's favorite phrase "the far left". Given time, Limbaugh, Coutler, Beck O'Reilly and the other  right-wing  neo-fascist goons will hopefully self-destruct and take themselves out our misery.

Nice try losers.  Anyone who listens to Rush Limbaugh knows the truth.  You boys are preaching to the choir here.  The subject of all this was a beloved military hater you all were touting as brave...until is was discovered that he wasn't a real soldier...he was a PHONEY SOLDIER.

You're not going to win with this method.  You all just look stunningly weak.  Say hi to George S...and sorry about your failing at real journalism.

hehe. Nobody wants to talk about the elephant in the room, namely how the Left lionized Jesse MacBeth (a phony soldier) because it fit their template, no matter if Limbaugh said it or not. That's the real scandal.

Could you provide an example of "the Left" doing this? And, no, Rush telling you that they did it doesn't count.Thanks.

Aside from the fact that Jesse McBeath was roundly criticized by the left, I don't recall that he was known for advocating a withdrawal of the troops from Iraq.

However, if Rush is willing to apologize to any "real soldiers" he might have offended and explain that they certainly do have a right to speak out and advocate withdrawal without having their integrity questioned ... hey, I'm willing to take that.

After all, John Kerry ended up apologizing for any inference that might be taken from his remarks, even though it was an inference drawn by the wingnuts for him.

This is so stupid. Rush said "phoney soldiers". The caller said "if you talk to any real soldier....." and Rush replied "They joined to be in Iraq". It's obvious that they weren't talking about the phoney soldiers when Rush said that, he was replying to the caller's comment on real soldiers.

This is a bit silly on the part of Media Matters. Having been on the Rush Limbaugh show in the past, I know that he holds callers on line for quite some time when they have comments which would lead into the next segment or story wanting to be discussed by Rush.It is not a coincidence that he is so successful. It is a testimony to his ability, or I should say the ability of his call screener, (the famous, "Mr. Snerdly"), to organize Rush's callers in such a way that he can lead into the next topic of discussion smoothly, almost without callers even perceiving the transition.

Media Matters' insistence of making this an issue simply because Rush did not start talking about the left wing's truly "phony soldier" until a minute and some odd seconds after Rush's "phony soldier" comment, is like an audience at a banquet not realizing who the M.C. is speaking about while he is giving the introduction of the invited guest speaker.
