On the October 3 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe, while interviewing right-wing pundit Ann Coulter about her new book, If Democrats Had Any Brains, They'd Be Republicans (Crown Forum), host Joe Scarborough asked Coulter if she thought that Bill O'Reilly was unfairly attacked for his recent comments regarding a trip to Sylvia's restaurant in Harlem. Scarborough noted that he and his co-anchors agreed that O'Reilly "seemed shocked that black people can run restaurants like white people." Coulter responded: "[H]e made an obvious statement, he does that sometimes. But saying that he went to a black restaurant with black people and had a nice time and everyone was nice to him, no I don't think that's a racist statement. It's an obvious statement." Scarborough responded that O'Reilly "just seemed a little shocked, to us, he seemed shocked." Coulter then asserted: "I think the surprise part was inserted by people interpreting it."

But, as Media Matters for America documented, on the September 19 edition of Westwood One's The Radio Factor, O'Reilly said of his visit to Sylvia's: "I couldn't get over the fact that there was no difference between Sylvia's restaurant and any other restaurant in New York City. I mean, it was exactly the same, even though it's run by blacks, primarily black patronship. It was the same, and that's really what this society's all about now here in the U.S.A. There's no difference. There's no difference" [emphasis added].

From the October 3 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe:

SCARBOROUGH: Hey, let's bring in Ann Coulter now, she's written a new book, she's a bestselling -- all of her books go to number one. She's written a new book called If Democrats Had Any Brains They'd Be Republicans. Ann, I think my next book should be "If Republicans had any brains they'd still be in charge of Congress," but they don't, at least not that I've seen. Let me start by asking you first about what everyone's talking about, and that is Rush Limbaugh. Apparently people are very concerned about this "phony soldiers" remark. What's your take on it?

COULTER: Um, I'm a little disappointed they didn't wait for my book to come out to engage in one of these campaigns. They could've taken me out of context.

SCARBOROUGH : Yeah, I know, exactly, that's the thing. I'm sure Rush Limbaugh is just horrified that [Sen.] Tom Harkin [D-IA] is on the United States Senate floor, and [Senate Majority Leader] Harry Reid's [D-NV] on the United States Senate floor attacking him, it's like, "Please, please throw me in that briar patch."

COULTER: In my experience, being censured on the Senate floor is the equivalent of about 50 book signings.

SCARBOROUGH: Yeah, exactly. Now last week, we were going after -- by the way, our collective judgment here is that Rush Limbaugh's been taken out of context. Last week we were talking about Bill O'Reilly, who, to us, to us at least, seemed shocked that black people can run restaurants like white people. Do you think Bill O'Reilly was unfairly attacked last week?

COULTER: Um, oh, this is so hard for me because there is no way he would defend me if the shoe were on the other foot. But no, I mean, he made an obvious statement, he does that sometimes. But saying that he went to a black restaurant with black people and had a nice time and everyone was nice to him, no I don't think that's a racist statement. It's an obvious statement.

SCARBOROUGH: But he just seemed a little shocked, to us, he seemed shocked.

COULTER: No, I think the surprise part was inserted by people interpreting it.

SCARBOROUGH: OK.

MIKA BRZEZINSKI (anchor): Well you could kind of hear it, I'm sorry.

SCARBOROUGH: OK, it seemed that way.

Obviously a concerted effort by the right. Yeah, we edited O'Reilly's audio too to make him look like a racist.

Must be book selling time again...

Big surprise huh? On day two of the O’Reilly-Sylvia incident when the usual suspects showed up here defending him, I knew these guys would buy any excuse these people give them on any subject simply because they want to. They were waiting for the lead wingers to give them the talking point on this issue and then they made a mad dash for internet to tell those loony lefty's what Bill really meant….and the beat goes on. They are doing the exact thing with Rush’s recent denigration of the soldierthat disagree with him. Draft dodging Rush got caught taking pot shots at these soldierS. On another thread a poster said everyone knows Rush loves the military. If that's true  then why didn’t Rush join the military when they really needed him? The truth is Rush, Billy O, and Annie C love two things hearing themselves talk and money. Bill’s not looking out for anyone except himself, Rush doesn’t give a flying F about the military or his ditto zombies. It’s all about keeping Republicans in charge to protect their money. Their antics and personas is pure crap. Their shows, their books, and disingenuous political commentary are tools to be used to that end.

Now this is truly funny - Ann says fox isn't a conservative channel, it's a debate channel! Don't you actually have to have both sides aired to be considered a debate? All I ever see is right wing gasbags telling us why libs are bad!

After the "I cant get over the facts that..." comment, then he gives us some depth when he mentions what it was that surprised him.

That black ppl cant dine at a restaurant without using the "M-Fer" word when ordering iced tea.

The GOP are acting like they don't understand his comments now.  And it's a little bit comical.

SAVE DEMOCRACY, VOTE FOR A DEMOCRAT!!

If we are to have revision of history that is barely moments old, do we have to have it revised by such dull minds like Scarborough, and Coulter??

Joe was an embarrassment as a Congressman, and Ann Coulter was so embarrassing to George H.W. Bush she had to be tossed.

Ann writes like an angry lover jilted by a Democrat!

"i couldn't get over the fact..."   if that is not surprise, then what qualifies?   now, if all he did say was he "went to a black restaurant with black people and had a nice time and everyone was nice to him",  that would be a different story.   but that is not what he left it at.

I feel sorry for conservatives because on TV even their 'Lawyers' like Coulter have less credibility than the progressive's Comics like Jon Stewart. So Coulter tries to be funny, but she's just...not. She wierd like an older woman trying to act like the bully 14 year old 'popular girl' in school. She never grew out of junior high

It seems to me that all this woman publish is hate filled rhetoric.  I could be wrong, but judging by many of the things she's said, and watching interviews she's been a part of, I'd say that her book is just a bunch of pages put together in which she talks about the people she dislikes.  I can understand why Fixed News continues to promote her, but don't see why other news outlets take her seriously.

Handy checklist for right-wing apologists like Coulter:

      He/She...

_Was taken out of context. _Is a comedian. _Was making a joke. _Is just an entertainer. _Really meant to say something else. _Was really thinking about something else. _Is a victim of a smear campaign. _Is being viciously attacked. _Is being censored. _Ought to admit the mistake and apologize.

That last one should be grayed-out.

The only reason Scarborough is attacking O'Reilly because O'Reilly works for Fox News, and since Olbermann became O'Reilly's arch rival, and the rivalry between the two has helped both of their ratings, Scarborough (and now Abrams) are trying to get in on the action hoping for the same results. The fact that Scarborough sanctimoniously whined about the MoveOn.org ad, applauded those "noble" Democrats who condemned it, but takes up for Limbaugh and points a finger at Media Matters for mischaracterization, pretty much proves my point that Scarborough is the biggest phony on televisions today. Had Limbaugh been a Fox News pundit he would have joined Keith Olbermann’s bandwagon condemning Limbaugh and the “phony soldiers” remark. One day Scarborough acts like a libertarian, the next day an Evangelical Republican, the day after a William F. Buckley-like conservative, and after that a moderate who understands race relations and sexism against women. Puh-leeze! Some may view this flip-flopping as being “complex,” but I view it as opportunism.

That is interesting. He was all over O'Reilly, yet he's regurgitating Rush Limbaugh's excuse for the "phony soldiers" comment without even acknowledging that it could be considered an awkward choice of words. He's joining the other Righties and characterizing it as a hit job on Limbaugh. On the other hand, Kieth Olbermann and Chris Matthews are on the opposite side, which leads me to believe that it's not an MSNBC thing.

      "Bill was being obvious..."

Um... to whom? Other racists? You have to love Coulter's special brand of indignance.  She says absolutely nothing in 1000 words or more.

By the way, if someone intreprets the comments as racist... that's the listener's prerogative.  This constant rebuttal of 'you're too sensitive!' is lame and, basically, an excuse for bad behavior.  Bill O'Reilly is a 'professional' broadcaster.  Like he doesn't know how words may be taken or understood? Please. Maybe Bill should be a little more sensitive?  But, then he wouldn't have carte blanche to say racist things would he?

Pearl, first off, I'm not Bill.  :^)

There's actually another possibility.  It may not have been an element of surprise at all!  Maybe it was dogged determination.

Poor Bill tried and tried to get over "the fact that there was no difference".  Really, he tried hard.  But he just couldn't.

Understand a few things that makes these people who they are: Coulter, that lovable little elf grew up in in one of the most white, affluent, conservative and bigoted towns here in CT. Coulter is the poster child for the kids who grow up in that community with no understanding of right or wrong, just legal fees and airline tickets to Switzerland when your kid rapes the girl next door.  Isn't Limbaugh that big fat arrogant drug addict who was FIRED from some sports TV show because of his racist remark about a football player? and finally Big "Loofa" Bill who was sued for his pornographic phone message to this co worker. On a lesser note, Hannity supported Ted Nugent forhis vile remarks. Ther're all saints I tell ya, every last one of em.

What kills me is that people whom you describe, in my experience and observation, privately demonstrate nothing but disdain for the unwashed masses. Particularly in the South there are now tons of working-class and lower middle-class Republicans who think highly of people like Ann Coulter who stick it those evil liberals. I'm not sure why patriotic Americans pay attention to Ann C. If she still wants to support the war in Iraq, then she should volunteer to pay higher taxes and put her $$$ where her mouth is. She supports the party of spend, spend, and spend so they can leave the debt (what is it now---a trillion dollars?) to the next generation of children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren (with, or course, of no higher taxes for the priviledged folks like her). Of course, she has no children (let's hope she does not reproduce). What sacrifices has she ever made for her country? During WWII she probably would have whined if she couldn't have bought nylons or sold her printed "hate tracts" by the soup lines during the Depression. She is a comedian with no funny jokes.

Do you idiots really think that Bill Oreilly was shocked when he was talking about the restauraunt. How low will you go to try and make a true patriot out to be slime. You don't neede to attack Oreilly, Coulter, Hannity or Limbaugh if you are looking for slime. Just look at the clintons and there is enough slime to go around for the whole dem party. You liberals should really take a look at what your party has done to destroy this country and what they will do if one of you gets elected next year. If any of you have children or grandchildren you should be voting for a conservative not a tax and spend liberal weenie. Then again you probably don't care about raising your children you would rather have the liberals tell you how to raise them so you would have one less responsibility. Typical please tell me what to do liberals. Let the government take care of it all. Why don't you liberals want to stand on your own two feet. Remember we all have the right to the pursuit of happiness. It isn't and was never meant to be a guarantee. Some work on your part has to be involved.

Irony, stop it! I actually spat food out.I wasn't really thinking "grandpa" for Gator, more like in 3rd grade, or never made it past 3rd grade.

Seriously, there have been a lot of dittoheads here lately, and for a bunch of immigrant haters, they sure don't seem to be demonstrating English as their first language.

Well okey dokey then. I'm a Liberal and have been one all my life. I raised a very fine kid who is actually a young adult now working hard as a doctorate level medical professional and giving back to the society that allowed her the opportunity to work hard and pursue her happiness. Wow!

Well Gator, I raised my kids like most americans do  - to believe in fairness, honesty and a sense of morality. The goverment, republican or democrate had no involvement. It was up to me. Sadly , many of our children that we took such good care to raise have been sacrificed for lies about WMD's.  Clintons are probably no better or no worse then other ambitious politician, but not one soldier died in Bosnia. and please don't repeat that non sense you hear from those radio idiots about who is patriotic and who isn't - that should offend you as much as it does me! Try listening to BBC you would be surprised to hear how the rest of the world regards this once strong and unified country.

Wow, you really are ignorant. So THAT is what the Limborg hivemind has been told to think, then regurgitate. OK, we see now that you are stupider than brass bubblegum. Feel free to entertain us with your hilarious stupidity, we love to laugh at people as stupid as you. You really ought to try to obtain a braincell somewhere. It will surely die of lonliness but for a while you will know what it was like to have one.

Gator, to liberals, a complete life doesn't mean being brain-dead. But enjoy yours.

Yeah but that lobotomy that would be required for your BS to make sense would be too much. Liberals are not apt to join the Limborg hivemind. We like thinking for ourselves since you cant think at ALL I guess its all you have.

I know why Joe went after O'Reilly and not Limbaugh. Just click over to the right-wing website Newsbusters.org and you will see an item that says they had an influence on Scarborough. They--and other right-wing blogs--attack Scarborough for being too "left." (Yeah, if Joe's a liberal then I'm the Queen of France!) Joe even admits that  he keeps an eye on MMFA and NB. He apparently has caved into NB's attacks on him for trashing O'Reilly and being nice to Hillary Clinton. I think you should do the right thing and not let blogs pressure you. If Joe went after O'Reilly, then he should have went after Rush, too.
