In column, DeLay claimed Limbaugh was discussing "Global War on Terror critics" who faked military credentials

October 04, 2007 6:45 pm ET

SUMMARY: Tom DeLay claimed that "[a] few days back," Rush Limbaugh "and a caller were discussing Global War on Terror critics who have either exaggerated or entirely invented their military and combat service in order to bolster their credibility" when Limbaugh referred to "phony soldiers." In fact, during his September 26 broadcast, Limbaugh did not restrict his comments. DeLay also falsely claimed that Media Matters was "George Soros-funded."

In his October 3 Townhall.com column, former House Majority leader Rep. Tom DeLay (R-TX) claimed that "[a] few days back," conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh "and a caller were discussing Global War on Terror critics who have either exaggerated or entirely invented their military and combat service in order to bolster their credibility." In fact, as Media Matters for America has noted, during his September 26 broadcast, Limbaugh did not restrict his comments to "Global War on Terror critics who have either exaggerated or entirely invented their military and combat service in order to bolster their credibility," as DeLay claimed.

As Media Matters noted, Limbaugh and his caller were expressing disagreement with the assertion of a previous caller that the U.S. "should pull out of Iraq" when Limbaugh referred to "phony soldiers." During the conversation, the caller asserted: "[W]hat's really funny is, they never talk to real soldiers. They like to pull these soldiers that come up out of the blue and talk to the media." Limbaugh interjected: "The phony soldiers." The caller continued: "The phony soldiers. If you talk to a real soldier, they are proud to serve." As Media Matters for America has documented, during the September 26 broadcast, it was not until 1 minute and 50 seconds after making the "phony soldiers" remark that Limbaugh told listeners, "Here is a 'Morning Update' that we did recently talking about fake soldiers. This is a story of who the left props up as heroes. And they have their celebrities. One of them was Jesse MacBeth." Limbaugh then read from a September 25 "Morning Update" article (subscription required) posted on his website about Jesse MacBeth, an anti-war activist who pleaded guilty to one count of making false statements to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs for pretending to be an injured Iraq war veteran. Limbaugh's "Morning Updates" air on the radio separately from his nationally syndicated show. (Transcript is here.)

DeLay also falsely claimed that Media Matters was "George Soros-funded." In fact, as Media Matters has also documented, it has received no money from philanthropist George Soros -- either directly or indirectly.

From DeLay's October 3 Townhall.com column, titled "The Return of 'That'll Teach 'em' Hillary":

A few days back, Rush and a caller were discussing Global War on Terror critics who have either exaggerated or entirely invented their military and combat service in order to bolster their credibility. Major news outlets and even U.S. Attorneys have opened damning investigations of many of these people, who Limbaugh and a caller on his radio show rightfully described as "phony soldiers."

Well, as soon as the words were out of Limbaugh's mouth, Hillary sicked her network on Limbaugh. The George Soros-funded, Hillary-devoted group Media Matters has been the tip of the spear, charging Limbaugh with unpatriotic slander against the troops. Because, after all, accusing phony soldiers of being phony soldiers is the same as accusing our troops in the field in Iraq of being phony soldiers. The whole thing is trumped up nonsense, of course, which is why the spectacle of the Senate Majority Leader denouncing Limbaugh from the floor of the Senate went over so poorly with the few Americans who still actually pay attention to Congress.

But the far more important story than this little tempest that will go away in three days is, well, the vast left-wing conspiracy out to get anyone opposed to the Clinton Restoration. Media Matters claims it's a nonpartisan "research and information center." That's all well and good, except that Hillary Clinton herself took credit, while speaking at YearlyKos of all places, of starting Media Matters. In her August speech to the left wing fringe gathering, Senator Clinton bragged about "institutions that I helped to start and support like Media Matters and Center for American Progress" (CAP is a left-wing think tank effectively owned and operated by the Clinton campaign policy shop).

I'm hopping his trial won't take place till after Jan. 2009 that way I can be sure he'll stay in prison. I really feel ashamed (not really) but that is one man that I want to see get a taste of prison's "toss salad".

"A few days back, Rush and a caller were discussing Global War on Terror critics who have either exaggerated or entirely invented their military and combat service in order to bolster their credibility."

Exactly, Tom... and here's what Rush said to Mike from Chicago seconds before his "Phony soldiers" comment:

CALLER: I used to be military, okay, and I am a Republican.

      RUSH: Yeah.

CALLER: And I do listen to you, but --

RUSH: Right, I know. And I, by the way, used to walk on the moon.

In essence, Limbaugh would accuse any soldiers whos views on the Iraq war are different from his of inventing their military service. Rush refuses to believe that any real soldier, or Republican, would have views on the war the opposite of his.

      Read the transcript, DeLay...

"Its obvious you never listen to the show..."

You are quite wrong, once again, Leather. In fact I have listened to Limbaugh's show for many years, and continue to tune in fairly regularly. I have been witness to some of Limbaugh's most outrageous comments and I can speak as knowledgably about the content of his show, along with his style and tactics, as anybody else. I disagree with what Limbaugh's views but I like to know what the right wing is saying on particular issues. If I get into a political discussion with someone from the right I already know what to expect because, amazingly, for a long time daily right wing talking points have emanated first from Limbaugh's show.

Just like Limbaugh you make faulty assumptions.

Irony, I listen to Rush and some of the other righty shows on a regular basis too, especially when I'm on the road for work.

I've been questioned at this site by some of the liberal posters(how can you stand to listen to that crap?), but I find it fascinating , and useful, probably for the same reasons you do.

While Hannity and Hewitt and others seem to get their daily talking points from Rush, I think Rush gets his material straight from the GOP.

I live in a very Republican county. Before listening to Rush, it sometimes took me until the next day before I could straighten out conservative co-workers and aquaintances (I'd have to go and look up all the misinformation, thinking they couldn't be being fed that much that was wrong)If I listen, I can usually debunk them before they've fully got their speech together.

While I don't think it's necessary to listen to Rush's show to understand the items that are presented here (there's always enough context that the BS stands on its own), listening to whole segments of the show is pretty interesting, to see how the propaganda is slowly framed. It's a whole hypnosis type of thing.

I like the dittoheads who post here, insisting that if we'd listen to Rush for a dew weeks straight we'd get it. All I can say is, the more I listen, the weaker it is.Still interesting, in that I realize a group of people is listening at the same time, and thinks Rush makes sense.

HBL, thanks... agree with your post. I also listen to Limbaugh when I'm on the road.

What I discovered during Karl Rove's heyday was that Limbaugh would apprently get the GOP talking points before anyone else. He would intorduce the talking points which would then start spreading. By the end of the day every other right wing talk radio show, local or national, would be using the exact same terminology, catch phrases, etc. that Limbaugh introduced earlier in the day.

What kills me is that the right wingers don't believe we listen to this stuff to stay on top of right wing propaganda and tactics and actually draw our own conclusions without the benefit of a talk show host telling us what we should believe. I would love to swap Limbaugh stories with you sometime...some of the stuff I have heard from Limbaugh's fat mouth over the years are astounding.

What I find unbelievable is the unwillingness of anyone to admit the dems are doing the exact same thing as the republicans.  I listen to Rush on a regular basis (usually at work) and consider myself a conservative.  Yet I take everything that I hear on these shows with a grain of salt.  Everyone has an agenda, and part of being an intelligent, well informed citizen is to deeply examine the propaganda that we are all being fed from both sides of the spectrum and find the truth somewhere in the middle.  Rush, Hannity, Glenn Beck, Moveon.org, and Media Matters are all the same, just on different sides of the fence.

Used to be Rush could get away with defaming people easily. Even if he manages to put this behind him, it will not be without some sweat. There is some sensitivity in the public to the idea the maybe  Rush is not a nice person. Yah many got that idea right away. Probably many more today.

The actions of some of the vetran organizations could be Rushes worst nightmare. The scene has my attension.
