On the October 4 edition of Fox News' The Big Story With Gibson and Nauert, co-host John Gibson, during his "My Word" segment, said, "In today's National Review, Byron York has some information on [David] Brock's new book, which has a subtitle that reads: 'How the right-wing media corrupts democracy.' " In fact, the "new book" to which Gibson referred is more than three years old. The Republican Noise Machine: Right-Wing Media and How It Corrupts Democracy, written by Media Matters for America president and CEO David Brock, was published by Crown in 2004. And the York article, while reprinted in the October 4, 2007, edition of the National Review, was originally published in that magazine in 2004.

On October 4, the National Review republished the article with the following editor's note:

The controversy over Rush Limbaugh's "phony soldiers" remark has brought new prominence to Media Matters for America, the left-wing media watchdog founded by former right-wing media star David Brock. Media Matters is an avowedly political institution, part of a group of institutions the Center for American Progress, MoveOn.org, and others that have become increasingly important in Democratic politics. In 2004, Byron York revealed the origins of Media Matters and the big Democratic party donors who helped Brock bring it to life.

Media Matters is not, as the National Review claims, "an avowedly political institution," but a nonpartisan, progressive nonprofit that is unaffiliated with any political party or candidate.

Gibson also claimed Media Matters "get[s] Soros support." As Media Matters has repeatedly noted, it has received no money from philanthropist George Soros -- either directly or indirectly.

From the October 4 edition of Fox News' Big Story With Gibson and Nauert:

GIBSON: Now it's time for "My Word." More about Media Matters maestro David Brock and his co-conspirators in the vast, left-wing slime machine -- Hillary Clinton and George Soros, and their various minions around the country. First, even though we played you that tape a day or two ago of Hillary taking credit for starting Media Matters with Brock, Brock's people now say, "Oh, no, she didn't." Obviously, they can't both be right, and someone is lying in this case. My money is on Hillary as the truth-teller. It was an embarrassing revelation for Media Matters that she was in on starting this particular attack machine, but sometimes the truth just is embarrassing.

In today's National Review, Byron York has some information on Brock's new book, which has a subtitle that reads: "How the right-wing media corrupts democracy." Coming from people who make their living taking quotes out of context, misinterpreting, attacking the military, and lying, this book promises to be funnier than the Jon Stewart monologue on Bush.

I've talked about Brock and Media Matters getting Soros support, but York also exposes how Brock has managed to pile up millions talking anti-conservative trash to rich lefties. York also reveals that Brock's office in Washington is stocked with opposition research people from various Democratic campaigns, including people from the Edwards, Wes Clark, and Barney Frank campaigns, just to name the most prominent. They dig up stuff to make into Brock's attacks. They have a big file on me.

Is Hillary going to shut down the left-wing slime machine if she wins? She should. But the temptation to keep it cranking out hits on conservatives will probably be too great.

By the way, in yesterday's "My Word" about Brock, we ran the wrong picture. This is what we intended to run, a picture of Brock at a social gathering with Massachusetts congressman Barney Frank. I apologize for any confusion. That is "My Word."

MMFA has a big file on rightwing suckup Gibson?  Now wouldn't that just make a fun read at the beach?

At least O'Reilly's gargantuan ego is mildly justified, he does run Fox because of his ratings......but this guy? - what could he possibly have an ego over to think there is file anywhere on him, for anything.

The right wing nut jobs are jumping on Clinton's comment about helping start MMFA and Center for American Progress the way they jumped all over Al Gore for saying, "During my service in the United States Congress, I took the initiative in creating the Internet. I took the initiative in moving forward a whole range of initiatives that have proven to be important to our country's economic growth and environmental protection, improvements in our educational system."

Yeah, Al Gore said he invented the internet and Clinton said she "secretly started" MMFA.

That's a good book too, but Blinded by the Right is heart warming aside from the behind the scenes dirty politics it shows a man finally discovering and embracing his humanity. He and his right wing cohorts did some real dirt and what Brock did to Anita Hill was awful; but he apologized unlike the Republican Senators that publicly humiliated this women. Anyway no one is beyond redemption, so maybe Sens. Simmons, Hatch, and Spector will one day apologize to Ms. Hill as well.

Man, Gibson has become a total joke...

“Today, three companies own half of the radio stations in the United States.  By remaining true to no higher principle than milking the highest profits possible from the right-wing market niche, station owners saw to it that virtually every talk show personality who gained a foothold in national syndication in Limbaugh’s shadow was a Far Right conservative, while liberals were effectively shut out of what would become an ideologically uniform medium more like that of a totalitarian society than of a democracy.”

Okay, so MMFA is now in the crosshairs of the rightwing "counter-attack." Would any of the blonde Dracula's "fans" look this site up? Would they be surprised that it is well organized, taking each subject seriously, allowing each quote to speak for themselves.

I wonder what the average Fox News viewer is getting from this. I know there has been a slew of new naysayers here, but they don't represent themselves well ("sissies"). Could the rightwing strategy to somehow bring this down end up hurting them?

It has hurt them, how much and in what way is a complex question. This is how this population has operated for close to 30 years. MMFA like The RNM, has rock hard solid evidence. As they attack in their standard forms, this evidence is exposed to the public. As far as I know The three excellent editors and David write and speak of the parts and aspects of the whole of the media. MMFA makes no argument, other than this is what we beleive is the truth of the matter. You want to enter into an evidence situation where there are consequences?

I don't think any of the Axis of Weasels wants this, but to effectivily counter MMFA they'll have to change. If you think they can do this, Los Vagas will probably give some amazing odds.

If blusterring and bullying don't work, I can't help but think that this would be where dirty tricks might appear to offer hope to them. About that I can't speak with any familiarity about current/new tactics.

C'mon...you commenters at Media Matters are a complete joke...as is David Brock.

"Non-partisan." the MM asserts. Gimme a break. What's infuriating about Media Matters is not the positions they take -- they're certainly welcome to do it, and criticize whomever they want, though don't be surprised if the targets get angry and start the counterattack. It's just the sheer unmitigated gall of the claims. David Brock is a transparent Clintonite. This site is dedicated to slamming the right/conservative viewpoint, the same way Newsbusters.org is dedicated to exposing and slamming the leftist bias. They are who they are. The only difference is that Newsbusters is totally upfront about it. MM desperately tries to engage in wool-pulling. about their "non-partisanship" and such like.

But most eyes won't have it because the hypocrisy is just so obvious.

To give everyone some perspective of how the Al Gore ‘created the internet’ syndrome works on the right; I have the following to relate.

While doing battle on the right wing infested blogs at military.com, I had the gal to post links to Media Matters which has gone over like the preverbal “Fart in a Prayer Meeting” there.    I was informed that since Hillary Clinton “founded” Media Matters and being the left wing loon I am, using anything from MMFA is not legitimate.  Of course they, my nemesis’ there, never link to Bill O, or Rush, or Coulter, or Gibson or any of there numerous reliable sources.  I haven’t quite figured that out yet.  If you are going to use them for proof of your argument, shouldn’t you want the world to see how smart you are to find such fountains of truth?

      From one of my antagonists:

“Kind of makes me wish there were a cyber-cliff for all the lemmings that followed the musings of "media-matters"(who insisted on berating Limbaughs comments before getting the facts) to fall off of...Media Matters, an organization founded with Hillary Clinton's help (she said it), is only a means to an end. Should that "end" come, NOTHING will matter except what the State chooses, and that "end" may be here before some of you muster out.”
