During the November 26 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Neal Boortz stated that "maybe the reason [Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL)] doesn't wear a U.S. flag on his lapel is because the U.S. flag -- regardless of what he thinks -- the flag of this country irritates a lot of Democrat [sic] voters." Boortz was referring to Obama's statement that he had decided to stop wearing a U.S. flag lapel pin during the run-up to the Iraq war because it "became a substitute for, I think, true patriotism." In that October 3 interview with ABC-affiliate KCRG-TV in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, Obama explained: "I decided I won't wear that pin on my chest. Instead, I'm going to try to tell the American people what I believe will make this country great and, hopefully, that will be a testimony to my patriotism." As Media Matters for America documented, Obama's comments led conservative media figures to question whether he "believe[s] in America," to describe him as a "domestic insurgent," and to suggest that he has "patriotism problems."

Boortz made his remark during a discussion with a caller regarding talk show host Oprah Winfrey's endorsement of Obama for president. When Boortz asked the caller whether she thought "Barack Obama believes America is great because of the people and freedom, or ... because of government," the caller brought up "[t]he flag issue," saying "that he doesn't believe in wearing it or displaying it."

From the November 26 broadcast of Cox Radio Syndication's The Neal Boortz Show:

BOORTZ: Why is Oprah Winfrey supporting Barack Obama? Is it because she believes, out of all of the candidates, that -- the Democrat [sic] candidates -- that he is the most qualified and would do the best job? Or is it because he is the first serious black presidential contender we've ever had in this country? Do you think that Barack Obama believes America is great because of the people and freedom, or does he believe America is great because of government?

CALLER: I don't know, some of the things he has said, or not said, or insinuated, kind of disturbed me in the thoughts of, does he really think our government --

BOORTZ: Like what?

CALLER: The flag issue -- that he doesn't believe in wearing it or displaying it.

BOORTZ: I -- no, he didn't -- now, now, Barack Obama never said he doesn't believe in wearing or displaying the U.S. flag. He's never said that. What he said was that, as I believe, you don't have to wear the U.S. flag on your lapel pin to be patriotic.

CALLER: Yeah.

BOORTZ: And I think that maybe the reason he doesn't wear a U.S. flag on his lapel is because the U.S. flag -- regardless of what he thinks -- the flag of this country irritates a lot of Democrat [sic] voters.

CALLER: Yes, it does. But you know what? Where we are right now is because of where we've been. So, yeah --

BOORTZ: Oh, that's much too profound for a Monday, Francis. Don't do that to me on a Monday.

I can't help myself, I must get right to the meat of Boortz's logic-

BOORTZ: And I think...(he's going to make something up)

that maybe the reason he doesn't wear a U.S. flag on his lapel is because the U.S. flag -- (he's going to mind read, and tell us what Obama is thinking)

regardless of what he thinks --(while admittedly ignoring what he thinks Obama is thinking)

the flag of this country irritates a lot of Democrat [sic] voters.(Boortz has told us the thing he made up).

Does Boortz have such a special audience that some of them come away from this thinking they've gained some insight into Obama's thoughts or the thoughts of Democratic voters, rather than Boortz's delusions?

Please gentlemen ... do not use [sic] to refer to democrat voters, party, etc.

This is NOT an error.  This is typical Newt Gingrich, Karl Rove, sick pandering to a hateful portion of the electorate.

It's an intentional error designed to slur us Democrats.  MMFA probably added the "sic" to show they know the right way to refer to our party and are merely quoting an idiot verbatim.

Methinks it's the conservative propaganda machine as has the "real" "patriotism problem."

As in holding jingoistic, fanatical mindsets with overtones of totalitarian regimes which saw among their articles of faith a deliberate and enforced "patriot love" justifying the regime's maintaining power as they do, and invoking claims of "national salvation" and "honour" among other patsies.

Not to mention expecting a weak-minded, mentally-disordered element of society to accept such as fact, even to be primed with such excesses of fanaticism as can be exploited on very little notice, unaware of the possible psychotic consequences.

Ah yes...... you have to just love the right-wing conservative way of thinking......

If you blindly follow the president or your supposed leaders into the abyss, you are a true and un-wavering patriot that loves your country (heil Hitler!)

But if you demand answers to everything and expect real transparency and would rather your country use the Constitution for what it is and not a piece of toilet paper, we are either angry at or hate our country.......

And all it took was for Mr Boortz to explain it to us all........ thanks a bunch.....

I can now go on with my day!

The honoable Senator Obama (D-IL) has already deftly explained why he doesn't - that it's become a substitue for real patriotism.  The righties love their symbols, but HATE the principals that the symbols stand for.  They've corrupted everything that was once about our national symbols.

I demonstrated my feelings about the US flag not by wearing a lapel pin, but by wearing an Army uniform for the last 25 years, including deployment to Iraq.  The liberals I know are like me and like Obama -- they demonstrate their patriotism by their actions, not by empty meaningless gestures like lapel pins.

Oh, Copius, I wasn't aware that your name was Flag.  Is that spelled with two g's, like Col. Flagg from MASH?

Anyone else notice that Copious Dissent never participates in any of these discussions?  He just drops his little mounds of right-wing elephant manure on these threads and leaves.

Maybe if we ignore him, he'll give up and go away.....

WZ, you should check out his pathetic blog sometime. I caught one where he was suggesting to his fellow wingnuts that they visit liberal web sites to try to impart some rational thought. I think he was even bragging to his friends that he kicked some ass here at MMFA.

Whatta loaf ! I guess he runs back to his own blog where he can spew this bS uncontested, just like Rush, from whom he apparently gets all of his material.

I, for one, am irritated by people who implicitly say they are more patriotic than their fellow Americans who don’t publicly declare their fealty to the regime currently in power.  Loyalty to the country and to the current administration are two different things.

Mr. Boortz, just so will understand, it's not the American flag that irritates some Democrat (sic) voters; it's the phony patriotism of people like you who are apparently incapable of understanding or appreciating the Constitutional principles upon which this country was founded. So, go wrap yourself in your flag and spout bumper sticker slogans all day long...I don't care what you think..

"Patriotism is the last refuge of the scoundrel." Samuel Johnson

And we certainly have enough of them infest our govenment, the airwaves, and the internet to prove this true. Thanks Bush, Cheney, Boortz, and Coupious -- those who overtaken a virtue and twisted into a vice for their own protection. Mr. Johnson would have probably been dismayed to see just how correct has become.

Boortz and Patriotism, what a set of odd bedfellows!

Boortz ha no room to talk about any one's Patriotism, since he has none himself! When it came time to show what type of patriot Boortz was he lied, scammed and ran from the American Flag, he's now berating another citizen about not wearing flag lapel pin!

Boortz is a Authentic American Chickenhawk, using others to shirk his duty, in service to the country!

Boortz while attending Texas A&M University between July 16,1963-June3 1967, received a ROTC Deferment from the draft, that was sucking up the youth of America left and right (Vietnam War)! Now there's nothing wrong with a ROTC Deferment, as the students taking it receive military training, while attending college.

But Boortz only lasted in ROTC for 3 semesters, dropping out of ROTC training and school from Jan 28-1965-June 8,1965, thereby losing both his College and ROTC deferment. But the flag-waving, chest-humping Boortz, continued to use his Draft-Deferment thru  Feb 13-1968!

But on June 3 1967,( keep in mind ,he carried his ROTC Deferment till Feb 13,1968) Boortz was either asked not to return, flunked out, or quit for good! However, Boortz knew if he informed the draft board he was out of college for good in June of '67, he was sure to be in Viet-Nam, by Christmas! So what does he do?

Boortz continues to carry his ROTC deferment until Feb 13,1968, when his daughter is born! Swelling with a new-found sense of invigorating Patriotism, running the Flag as high up the pole as it will allow him, Boortz reports to the Selective Service that's he's a brand-new papa! With his newly found patriotism oozing from every orifice in his body, he has effectively escaped the Draft for good!

Here's little juicy tidbit about Boortz and Texas A&M. On May 28,1967 Boortz purchased a Class of '67 Ring, and then proceeded to drop-out, quit or walk away from ever graduating from college. But even the fact that he never graduated from Texas A&M, that didn't stop him from shouting from the highest rooftops, telling his radio audiences, his employers or anyone that would listen that he did in fact graduate! Shouting loudly until he was outed as a liar about being 4-F in the draft, and a college graduate in Sept of '05! His bios now read instead of "Graduated in '67" to "Finished-up in'67!"

That's why he has no room to criticize anyone, anytime on their type, or form of Patriotism!

Boortz, this quote is for you, cause I know you are reading this Post about yourself, what else could a coward as vain as yourself do?  Mark Twain, Patriot: "The person who can yell the loudest without knowing what he is hollering about" (Mad Max., p.12)

Boortz used the backs and the lives of others, and even his new-born daughter to hide from serving his country in a time of National Emergency!

The wearing of the flag lapel irrates some of us is the hypocrisy of the wearing of the pin. Wearing of this pin is substituted for actually doing something for our troops or our nation. I am a "patriot" because I wear the American Flag pin. patriotism - the last refuge of the scoundrel. Attributed to Mark Twain

"hypocrisy |hiˈpäkrisē| noun ( pl. -sies) the practice of claiming to have moral standards or beliefs to which one's own behavior does not conform; pretense. ORIGIN Middle English : from Old French ypocrisie, via ecclesiastical Latin, from Greek hupokrisis ‘acting of a theatrical part,’ from hupokrinesthai ‘play a part, pretend,’ from hupo ‘under’ + krinein ‘decide, judge.’"
