After previously highlighting comments on progressive blogs, will media cover hateful comments on Free Republic about NH hostage situation?

November 30, 2007 9:39 pm ET

Media Matters for America has previously documented several media figures who have highlighted controversial comments on progressive websites. Media Matters asks: Will the media report that while discussing breaking news of hostages being taken at Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's (D-NY) presidential campaign office in Rochester, New Hampshire, numerous commenters on the right-wing website Free Republic posted hateful comments about the situation?

Examples of Free Republic comments on the situation include:

  • Poster "Snoopers-868th" wrote at 10:36:23 a.m. PT: "Just another diversion or to seek attention and sympathy."

  • Poster "Thompson/Hunter 2008!" wrote: "Probably a man masquerading as a pissed off Republican. Upon further investigation, it will be found out the person is really a Hillary plant, trying to make Republicans look bad."

  • Poster "azhenfud" wrote: "Obviously the bomb is an implant to distract attention now focused on the Kerr Kunundrum," presumably a reference to retired Brig. Gen. Keith Kerr.

  • Poster "NautiNurse" wrote, "Attention seeking on an otherwise slow news day."

  • "Retired Chemist" wrote: "Probably works for the Clinton campaign."

  • Poster "swain_forkbeard" wrote: "My first thoughts: it's staged, designed to draw attention in N.H. Maybe Hillary even has to rush there dramatically and resolve the situation. I doubt it's true, but there is her record."

  • Poster "xzins" stated: "I would never want anyone injured, and unfortunately, given the candidate, I would never discount the idea of a staged crisis."

  • Poster "billhilly" wrote: "Staged by the Clinton Campaign to grab headlines?"

  • "RoseofTexas" wrote: "Staged? Hmmmm the timing is suspicious!"

  • Poster "Labyrinthos" quoted a previous post stating "I wonder what nutjob they paid to pull this stunt.... like all the people who they get to hang nooses to make people think conservatives are radical haters" and wrote: "Given the Obama surge of late, the Clintoons probably hired an African American guy named Barbarack Obaman."

  • Poster "Leisler" wrote: "Anyone know where [former Vice President] Al Gore is? Is the guy wearing a hubcap size gold medal with the words 'Nobel Prize' on it?"

  • Poster "jveritas" wrote: "Someone in Hillary Clinton campaign spread the lie that this happened in her campaign office thinking that this will generate sympathy to the most unlikeable and meanest Presidential candidate in modern time."

  • Poster "rvoitier" wrote: "It's setup to get the sympathy vote. Ticks don't fart unless it's choreographed by clinton first."

  • "theDentist" wrote:

Aide: "Senator, someone is holding hostages at your headquarters in Rochester, NH"
    Hillary: "Where?"
    Aide: "Rochester"
Hillary: "And I should give a sh** because...?"
    (a couple seconds pas [sic])
Aide: "It may help soften your image for voters."
Hillary (annoyed): "Well then issue a statement, but stop wasting my time."

  • Poster "Got a right to Life?..Huh?" wrote: "Now that is a creative use of campaign funds. I wonder if they paid a homeless man to pose as a wacko conservative. It would have cost them a pint of courage and a roll of duct tape. They need to keep close tabs on this witness, least she slip away without a trace. Hillary canceled her comments today."

  • "CaliGangsta" wrote: "Hope everything is alright. Hope this isn't a ploy by Hillary to get voter sympathy. She planted questioners at the debate, I wouldn't put it past her to plant a 'terrorist'."

  • Poster "Beatthedrum" wrote: "You can bet your bottom dollar the MSM wants this guy to blow his brains out, as long as he doesn't hurt anyone else. Great dramatic ending, that would give the story more legs.. Also if there's anyway this guy can be tied to a Clinton campaign worker (maybe urging him on for the publicity), it will shut him up if he's dead. Probably when the dust settles, dead or alive, this will be some nutcase who saw this as his chance at fame."

  • Poster "sulu" replied to a comment he quoted as "I wouldn't be surprised if some rabid Clinton supporter pushed some whack job to do this" by writing: "I think you're right. My friends and are at work are saying that if it's a plant, they most likely threatened him to release photos or some such, and promised him he'd be okay. In real life, I think this guy will have to end up having his brains blown out. You watch. He won't be allowed to live. Mark my words. They couldn't leave him alive to talk. He will be dead soon."

  • Poster "chemicalman" wrote: "I may be a little late at saying this, but don't want to look through 1500 posts to see if it's there. First the Hillary campaign plants questions...now they're planting bombs."

Media Matters has previously documented media figures highlighting controversial comments on progressive blogs. For instance:

  • Washington Post media critic Howard Kurtz's March 1 column highlighted offensive comments posted on the Huffington Post blog "after a suicide bomber blew himself up at Afghanistan's Bagram Air Force Base, while [Vice President Dick] Cheney was there." Right-wing pundit Michelle Malkin had posted the comments on her website, and Kurtz reprinted a sample of the remarks in his column. Kurtz wrote: "I would agree that it's absurd to view these assassination fantasies as anything other than the rantings of the fringe, and that they shouldn't be used to tar an entire ideology. All I'm saying is that it's really sad that some loons feel this way, and that the Internet culture, however briefly, gives them a megaphone."

  • On the June 29, 2006, edition of Fox News' Big Story, host John Gibson discussed a Supreme Court decision issued that morning that prohibited the use of military commissions for the trial of detainees at Guantánamo Bay, and cited reader comments posted to the Daily Kos blog which discussed the decision. Gibson stated: "One of the comments on the far-left Daily Kos, which is a blog, in which writers purported to analyze the Supreme Court decision -- fair and balanced, of course -- one writer actually said, per today's decision, the administration appears to have been engaged in war crimes which are subject to the death penalty. Wow! They're excited over there on the far left."

  • In an August 21 column, Washington Times columnist Nat Hentoff cited an August 8 Wall Street Journal op-ed by Lanny J. Davis, former special counsel to President Clinton, that quoted from comments by blog readers that Davis characterized as "extremis[t], bigot[ed] and intoleran[t]." Hentoff wrote: "Connecticut Sen. Joe Lieberman -- now an insistently independent Democrat -- was pilloried during his losing primary contest with Ned Lamont, not only for his stand on the Iraq war but also because he is a Jew. Being one myself for many years, I was not surprised by the centuries-old persistence of this hatred among several of the fiercely anti-Bush bloggers during the campaign."

The media's coverage of Clinton actually encourages this kind of mindlessness about her. That's what makes these people come to these  ridiculous conclusions so quickly. It's part of the script about her, so of course they're not going to remedy the problem.

I agree with your sentiments, hateful is a bit of a stretch and idiotic/paranoid speculation is a better descriptor in this particular instance. I'm quite positive, however, that one wouldn't have to dig very deep at all to find a plethora of vitriolic posts regarding Hillary and/or Bill Clinton on a number of reich-wing blogsites.

no one has to try "to make republicans look bad", they do a spectacular job of it all by themselves. one would think they were bred to it, given their usual extraordinary high level of success.

suspicious timing? suspicious timing for what? is the election next week, and no one said anything about it?

It's suspicious timing, because some knuckledraggers are accusing CNN of allowing someone connected to the Clinton campaign ask a question during the republican debate. Clearly, the way to deal with that is hiring some lunatic to make a bomb threat to some Clinton campaign headquarter. Geez, you can't see the CONNECTION here?

"I see no difference between this hate and the hate on the Daily Kos."

Sorry, bro'. There's a HUGE difference. If it's hate you want, DUnderground and DKos take the cake.

After about 5 seconds on Google:

DU, 8/31/07, on Tony Snow's cancer: "Sorry, but f*%^ him!"

DKos, 3/27/07, on Tony Snow's cancer: "What if this is a pure fake?" Another poster responds: "I continue to be disappointed at the mean-spiritedness around here."

The media also ignored Randi Rhodes' Katrina remarks cited by the ADL; Olbermann's salutes cited by the ADL; Wolf Blitzer's "They are so black" comment during Katrina; and this doozy from Air America's Sam Seder a few years back. Seder, introducing an audio clip:

"Let's go to Brit Hume, the horrible scumbag, who many people consider somewhat responsible for the fact that his son committed suicide."

Just awful. And the media reported these when? Yet they have gone bonkers over things said by O'Reilly and Limbaugh.

The double standard and liberal bias are crystal clear.

This is ridiculous. First of all, there are 925 comments on the dKos diary (which is titled "Our Prayers Go Out to Tony Snow and Family"), but you can only list one example. I didn't read all of them, but the first 50 or so are either condolences or questions about what exactly he has (but that's probably just because they want to know when to schedule the party when he dies). Obviously, a google search would not directly lead you to that single comment, and you obviously knew of its presence beforehand. By saying it took you five seconds to find you are clearly implying that these are prominent examples, which is simply not the case.

You've got to be kidding! Just the fact that liberals tend to be more open-minded and inclusive necessitates 'less hate' from that side of the isle. Where do the racists, misogynists, and homophobes reside?  Overwhelmingly on the right, of course! Not just with the bloggers either. Have you ever heard some of the hateful comments/rants by the likes of Limbaugh, Coulter, and Hannity? Just to name a few. You mention Rhodes and Seder specifically as engaging in hate-speech. What do you say about Limbaugh reveling in the death of Jerry Garcia while at the same time making himself deaf with the Hillbilly-Heroin? Or, any number of talk show hosts accusing the Clintons of 'murdering' Vince Foster?

I think you're missing the point. MMFA doesn't really feel the mainstream media should report every mindless post by every anonymous blogger/poster. They are simply questioning why the mainstream media only reports left-wing posts when right-wingers make hateful posts all the time.

MMFA's point is that neither should be reported. We don't know if any of the left or right posters are even real left and right wingers, or people just trying to make the opposition look foolish. MMFA is criticizing the mainstream media from focussing on these posts at all.

First, I doubt very much that this is in anyway true...... Is there hate to be found on this site, sure, but I'd be willing to bet that most of it was written by those pretending to be progressives or liberal and are in fact either out-right-wing haters & immature children in adult bodies!

There is 10 times the hate on Freepers or RedState or Sean Hannity's little site and 99.9% of it can very likely be attributed to real right-wing children than from undercover progressives.....

Gosh, I see nothing but love coming from the right. Consider these little valentines from Savage:

"I'm not gonna put my wife in a hijab. And I'm not gonna put my daughter in a burqa. And I'm not getting' on my all-fours and braying to Mecca. And you could drop dead if you don't like it. You can shove it up your pipe. I don't wanna hear any more about Islam. I don't wanna hear one more word about Islam. Take your religion and shove it up your behind. I'm sick of you."

"What sane nation that worships the U.S. Constitution, which is the greatest document of freedom ever written, would bring in people who worship a book that tells them the exact opposite. Make no mistake about it, the Quran is not a document of freedom. The Quran is a document of slavery and chattel. It teaches you that you are a slave."

And then there are those knee slappers about "nappy headed hos" coming from the soon to be revived Imus. I guess someone got their hands on some Haitian Zombie Powder. Boy I can hardly wait. The satirical genius of the right used to be beyond me but then I heard a few riotous sidesplitters from Limbaugh:

"Take that bone out of your nose and call me back."

"Have you ever noticed how all composite pictures of wanted criminals resemble Jesse Jackson?"

"The NAACP should have riot rehearsal. They should get a liquor store and practice robberies."

If only those haters at Daily Kos would learn the art of satire.

We all know the answer to MMFA's question above.  Of course the media won't cover hate filled posts from right wing bloggers.  Their side owns the media.  But, they'll sh*t on the left all day long.  And while I agree that hate is hate, I also understand that bias is bias.  I miss the days when we had reporters who exposed wrongdoing regardless of who did it.

As for the crime itself, there's a lot of nuts listening to Rush and Hannity 6 hours a day.  Their thirst for thirst is never quenched.  The way Limbaugh beats on Hillary, it's not one bit surprising that yet another nutcase has committed yet another crime against what they percieve as being a threat to the U.S.  Right wingers can add this to their growing list of crimes these hatetalkers have incited--OK city bombing for one.

I have several times linked to the Supreme Court case Red Lion which said DIRECTLY that there is NO FREE SPEECH ISSUE in what is basically the fairness doctrine. In any case its just dumb. Suggesting that someones free speech rights are being abrogated because they are balanced by someone else using THEIR free speech rights is mindnumbingly stupid. Then again you dont really THINK about what you spew on this site or even what you believe. You just believe what you are TOLD to believe and dutifully regurgitate it. The fairness doctrine was vital when info was transmitted mainly via airwaves, which were owned by the people and limited in bandwidth. It's to Reagan's discredit that he tossed it on the garbage heap.

The importance of the doctrine is now waning in these days of cable, satellite, and broadband. Far more insidious today is the consolidation of media ownership, and unfortunately this problem can be laid at the feet of Bill Clinton.

So true! The Fairness Doctrine had value in that it required the airwaves be used for the public good. News had to be news and a certain amount of content had to serve the local community in which the radio/television station resided. The bigger problem is indeed the consolidation of the media that occurred after the Telecommunication Act was passed. When corporate America 'owns' the airwaves, there is little doubt that impartial reporting and investigating will suffer. If the news department is part of the 'entertainment department' and needs to show a profit, all we are going to see is more stories on Brittany Spears, Lindsey Lohan, and OJ Simpson. A perfect example is the 60 Minutes investigative report about the forged Niger Uranium documents that was slated to air just prior to the '04 selection. It was canned by 60 Minutes because they didn't want to unduly influence the election. Viacom, which owns CBS, had an executive (CEO?) that came right out and said that a republican victory was preferable for the company. I think that exposing lies that directly contributed to the march to an illegal war should rightfully influence an election! Murrow must be rolling over in his grave...

Anyone who can't see that connection chooses to be blind.

When first heard it was hillary I thought oh God one of the Rushbots have finally snap. Are we missing any of our trolls? I know it is bad to think that, but they are crazy enough and right-wing radio doesn't help in it. I wouldn't put it past a freeper to do something like this for real if Hillary wins. It scary how crazy and extreme the freepers are. I'm scared to think what they will do if a Dem wins the White House and they lose everything this time around.

Justice and Truth(tm) in the USA - Fact Check:

From this topic it is clear that there is a hate-deficit on the right.  I mean, when the left fantasizes about murdering Cheney and torturing Bush and applauding the death of anyone on the right, conservatives post such mild conspiracy fantasies - it's almost embarrassing.

I want to thank MMFA for highlighting the need for conservatives to get much more hateful so that we can compete with the left.

I agree with you that this is not a compelling comparison by MMFA.  This is pretty tame stuff compared to what I have seen from Freepers in the past.  I would visit there more often, but I need to take a shower every time I do.  Unfortunately, we are in a drought here, so water is just too precious.

        JT,

"From this topic it is clear that there is a hate-deficit on the right."

Your correct on that one..... why?.... because MMFA has class and likely didn't want to recopy the more insideous or disgusting ones

"I mean, when the left fantasizes about murdering Cheney and torturing Bush and applauding the death of anyone on the right,"

I don't recall ever seeing a liberal/lefty ever dreaming up fantasies about killing Cheney or torturing Bush? Though the world would have been a better place had they never been born, we don't wish them dead, just in prison!

"conservatives post such mild conspiracy fantasies - it's almost embarrassing."

Yeah...... if you really believe this one, I have the deed of ownership for the moon I'd like to sell ya!

"I want to thank MMFA for highlighting the need for conservatives to get much more hateful"

Like MMFA could prod you people on the right to be any more hateful and pychophantic

"so that we can compete with the left."

Unless you mean to compete with us on speaking only the truth with facts

Randi Rhodes NEVER joked about killing Bush you friggin moron.  Her producer played a spoof tape that had the sound of a gunshot in it.  She apologized RIGHT AFTER it was played, and promised to never play it again because it was in poor taste.  I know this, because I was listening to that show.

I heard her apology as I was reaching for the phone to try to let her know that it was in poor taste. You see, that's what responsible Liberals do.  We complain to those on the airwaves who cross the line.  I don't know what responsible conservative do when Rush pulls his daily horshit.  If I ever meet a responsible conservative, I'll let you know.

Freeperland is a pretty interesting place. Sometimes I wonder about the thinking of the fanatic rightys that occasionally post here, how they ever got to the place where they expect their conspiracy hallucinations to be treated as perfectly reasonable theories.

Then I look at the Freepers, where the posts above form a thread that probably seems like a rational discussion to them.

Yeah, there are some posters on lefty sites mentioning some pretty nasty things, but I don't see the same detachment from reality as at the wingnut sites.

I was banned from the Free Republic, because they were talking about a bill that would have ended discrimination based on Sexual Orientation (with an exemption from religious places of worship). Somebody on their posted "I would have to put up with this at work, doesn't it infringe on MY civil liberties." And I told the person, "No. It would give them equal rights. Giving someone else equal rights does not infringe on your civil rights." And I got banned. Well, banned from posting that is.

Right-wing bigots always talk as if there is a limited amount of something called "Rights," and if you allow one group to have some, it deprives another group of their share.  I've lost count of how many clueless dicks I've heard on the radio saying things like "gay people want the right to get married, but that would infringe on MY rights..." to do what?  Implied is that the caller has the "right" not to be exposed to the idea of gay marriage.  Also implied is that if gay people get the right to marry, heterosexual marriages will be diminished....whatever, man.

The bottom line for these bigots is that they LIKE have rights exclusive to their group, and they don't want to share.  It's just that simple.

We don't know the real reason why this man targeted Clinton's campaign headquarters, but I wouldn't be surprised if he was a viewer and listener to Fox News or Silly Sean's little radio and television shows.

I wonder what the Freepers would say if this man said he stormed Clinton's office because of Silly Sean's "Stop Hillary Express" and Fox News, constant negative stories about Clinton. There are unstable people out there, and it doesn't take much to drive them over the edge.

But we really don't have the motive, yet. Authorities are questioning the man as we speak. But if I were Bossmen Murdoch and Ailes, I would pray that this scenario is not true, otherwise it would be a public relations nightmare for Fox News and News Corporation.

I think by focusing on which "side" writes more hateful posts, people are missing the point.  This isn't about who writes more hateful posts, it's about individuals in the MSM highlighting hateful posts from liberals and ignoring similar posts from conservatives.  Reporting on either is irrelevant IMO as there are brainless human beings that post absurd items on both sides.

I really don’t understand why people are participating in a pissing contest about which side is worse.  Seems kind of pointless......

Conservatives sure come up with lame conspiracy theories go this whole Clinton intimidation one is not only tired and flimsy, but also self defeating to their own message.  I remember my Republican neighbor telling me how much he respects Cheney for his cold blooded calculation on September 11th when he reportedly made the decision to shoot down a plane that had not yet landed as quickly as a batter decides to swing at a pitch.  These are the same people who think that Democrats are too wishy-washy and panty wasted to make difficult decisions.  Then they hand on to this theory that Clinton is this cold blooded mob tied killer at the same time.  They act like she would be some kind of facist dictator.  Then accuse her of hating the military.  I am no historian of facism, but I think the reason that scholars pay so little attention to  the anti-military fascist uprisings is that no matter how many times it has been attempted no one has ever noticed. Please Freepers try to have some consistency in your theories.

You are a hostage! Who gives a political damn who is "behind" this? Being a hostage under any circumstance is terrifying. So maybe we need to drop the insensitive political stuff and focus on being the liberal and socially conscience people we claim to be.
