During the December 5 edition of MSNBC's Countdown, host Keith Olbermann named Fox News' Bill O'Reilly the "runner-up" in his nightly "Worst Person in the World" segment for, as Media Matters for America documented, claiming to have won the "war" on Christmas. Olbermann stated: "Our runner up, Bill-O, back to this war on Christmas that only he can see or hear. Telling a guest, quote, 'There's a very effective movement under way to wipe out in the public square all vestiges of Christmas. Stores were ordering employees not to say "Merry Christmas." If I had not done the campaign, then the forces of darkness would have won.' " Olbermann added: "Geez, Bill, you are the forces of darkness. This messiah stuff is bad enough, but the context is even worse. He was saying that to an obviously very sincere and very religious woman who is leading a push to de-emphasize commercialism at Christmas, and focus instead on the message attributed to Jesus, to care for our neighbors as ourselves." Olbermann then observed: "He told her she was trying to diminish what he'd done, and that she was naive and she was spending her time 'in the land of Oz!' "

As Media Matters has documented, O'Reilly is frequently named during Olbermann's "Worst Person" segment.

From the December 5 edition of MSNBC's Countdown with Keith Olbermann:

OLBERMANN: Our runner up, Bill-O, back to this war on Christmas that only he can see or hear. Telling a guest, quote, "There's a very effective movement under way to wipe out in the public square all vestiges of Christmas. Stores were ordering employees not to say 'Merry Christmas.' If I had not done the campaign, then the forces of darkness would have won."

Geez, Bill, you are the forces of darkness. This messiah stuff is bad enough, but the context is even worse. He was saying that to an obviously very sincere and very religious woman who is leading a push to de-emphasize commercialism at Christmas, and focus instead on the message attributed to Jesus, to care for our neighbors as ourselves. He told her she was trying to diminish what he'd done, and that she was naive and she was spending her time "in the land of Oz!"

Bill, they already made this movie you think is real life, The Christmas That Almost Wasn't, Rossano Brazzi, 1966, Italian.

First many of you say you are sick of Sue and her Olbermann mentions, then the next breath you are goading her into it.

        I don't understand??

Gov, check out other Olberman threads as well as threads where Keith's name comes up...the boo birds that go after Sue are plentiful. They get irked when she brings his name up or questions WHY he's so selective in his awards. Example= no one from MSNBC/NBC ever gets a slap.

I think Keith is a twirp, but I just don't mention it a lot anymore.

I'm no fan of Matthews and find him to be obnoxious most of the time, however, I don't think his intentions were racist. I think he's one of those guys that talks faster than he thinks, thus, you got silly statements like Obama being some "third-world" candidate. He makes a lot of silly analogies and comparisons that doesn’t make sense because the guy doesn’t know how to slow down for a moment to think things out before saying them. This doesn’t excuse the comment he made, nor do I think he would’ve made it if the candidate was white. But I don’t think his intentions were malice -- just clumsy and dumb. Typical Matthews.

"Third world" does not NECESSARILY mean people of color, or of any particular ethnicity. "Third world" is mostly economic, relating to issues like productivity, trade, education levels, and infrastructures such as electricity and sewer treatment.

Those in the "third world" lag behind in development and technological progress, no matter WHAT color they are.

It's not a racist comment. It IS a slam and a minor smear on Obama by Matthews, suggesting Obama is somehow backwards thinking and not up to America's level of development. This, because Obama would actually talk to and include other countries in talks about world policy.

Only an elitist nationalist would make such a dumb comment.

Oh, on topic: If you INVENT the war, then you get to declare victory at any time and for any reason you choose. You can even decide what medals to award yourself while patting yourself on the back.

What if they held a war, and nobody came? Now we have an answer: Culture warriors will declare victory as a result of their courageous efforts. Yawn.

Well, it just so happens that people like Savage, Limbaugh, Hannity, and Beck are worse than Russert, Scarborough, and Matthews. Not excusing the NBC dudes whenever they are wrong, of course, it's just that the Hatesquad card-carriers are much worse overall and therefore get the honours.

It's a matter of degree. There are only three slots in the WPITW gallery, remember.

If you were going to leave it alone, then why didn't you ?  You're like a damned broken record, if you remember what those were.

I never understood why people called it "broken record."  It seems that a broken record wouldn't stay on the spindle at all, and therefore seem more correct to say "scratched record" because a scratched record repeats on each revolution of the turntable.

Just one of those "Deep Thoughts" moments.

I like this concept of declaring victory and moving on...especially when you realize you're on a fool's errand. Maybe we should try that in Iraq...

He'll take the credit if someone ever gets convicted in the Natalie Halloway case.

Then he'll probably lower our gas prices again.

He is truly the end all for society's woes.

But first, he'll bolster the economy in France by calling off the boycott.  Later he'll tell the story of how baby Jesus was born 5000 years ago...

      What war?

The war going on in his tiny little mind.  (He's hearing the voices, drooling, and seeing the ghosts of Media Matters.)

I watch Keith Olbermann every night and some times I wonder why he likes to put Bill O' Reilly on his show so much. I would like to have more news on "the surge" and important things like that. Also I accidently heard that some of Hillarys people might be doing some bad things to Barack's campaige and would like to hear more about that instead of what Bill has done.

Speaking of lifesavers, Bill invented that ring that you toss to a person who has fallen overboard, he got the idea upon opening a roll of wintergreen Lifesavers.

posted this yesterday, but it just shows the fox hypocrisy.  a couple of years ago, the faux bloviaters were carrying on about the "war on christmas", while at the same time carrying the nuetral themed "holiday ornaments" for your "holiday tree" on their web site.

I'm sure Christ is very happy to know that a morally bankrupt cheerleader for war, who harasses women on the phone while using a vibrator to arouse his penal nub, is "sticking up for the baby Jesus". Nothing repulsive, hypocritical, or laughable about that.

O'Reilly "defending Jesus" is like Bush "defending peace". Thanks but no thanks, amoral scum ..

O'Reilly is the guy in the theater that yells fire. He yells fire every time he goes to the theater. Olbermann is part of the audience that gets up and runs out of the theater every time that O'Reilly yells fire. The rest of us have learned to not pay any attention to the man yelling fire. We simply have him removed from the theater or we ignore him completely.
