On the December 17 edition of his CNN Headline News show, host Glenn Beck interviewed Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI) senior fellow Chris Horner, who referred to senators "who see a president in the mirror when they shave in the morning." Beck responded by inquiring about Democratic presidential candidate Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY), asking: "Does that include Hillary? Does she shave? ... Does that include Hillary? Does she -- I mean, she -- she shaves her legs. I'm just saying." After Horner said, "Now who's being naïve?" Beck -- while jutting out his lower jaw and miming shaving his face -- said: "I can see her in there. 'Gimme a pack of Kool cigarettes, will ya?' "

Horner responded: "OK, Glenn. Yeah, in the white -- in the white muscle T-shirt. I see it, too." He then told Beck: "Let's move on."

As Media Matters for America has noted, Beck has previously called Clinton the "Antichrist" and a "stereotypical bitch."

From the December 17 edition of CNN Headline News' Glenn Beck:

BECK: This is one of the most -- this is one of the most amazing things I've ever heard. First of all, we're going to agree to agree to meet sometime in the future. And it sounds like a comedy show, unless you hear [former Vice President] Al Gore give that speech where he just chastises us and says in two years things will be different and you'll have us then. Please tell me that you don't think that's true. Please.

HORNER: I don't think it's true for the following reasons: we remember history as much as Mr. Gore is trying to revise it. When he gave his PowerPoint presentation before a group I attend in Washington on Wednesdays, he said essentially the same thing. And I challenged him and reminded him that it was -- it's true, the Clinton administration did agree to Kyoto and they did sign it, though our media can't seem to get that right. Bush never un-signed it. He said mean things about it; that doesn't matter. They signed it on November 12, 1998, which is all the permission the Senate needs under our Constitution. Read Article 2, Section 2, and Article 1, Section 5. So the Senate could vote on these things. And Gore knows this.

And you'll notice that no senator, including those who see a president in the mirror when they shave in the morning, has tried to move Kyoto through the Foreign Relations Committee or to the floor. I admit that Bush hasn't asked them --

BECK: OK. Does that include Hillary? Does she shave?

HORNER: So, in other words -- I'm sorry?

BECK: Does that include Hillary? Does she -- I mean, she -- she shaves her legs. I'm just saying.

HORNER: Now who's being naïve?

BECK: I can see her in there. [makes shaving motion on his face] Gimme a pack of Kool cigarettes, will ya?

HORNER: OK, Glenn. Yeah, in the white -- in the white muscle T-shirt. I see it too.

BECK: Yeah, is she -- is she --

HORNER: Let's move on.

Every time I think Blenn Beck has reached bottom, he goes for a new low.  CNN needs to fire this moron and replace him with someone who will present two things missing from Beck's shows - truth and facts.

      Owwwww!

I get the same sensation when watching Beck as I do when I watch a video of some dude falling off his skateboard crotch-first onto a railing.

      Both make my nuts hurt.

OK - I'm biting my tongue not to start another rant about this idiot, and I “get” “Conservative humor” now, too.

All I’m asking is CNN play fair and give Al Franken 6 hours a day to display some of his "Progressive Humor"? Oh please, please, please, CNN???

Are you really “the most trusted name in news” or just Fox II? Beck’s the guy who definitely tipped the scale there.

Beck is trying to be funny here. Everyone can decide for themselves if he managed to pull it off.

To me this latest effort of his to joke around is silly but harmless.

Since you brought up Franken...he once did a skit where he pretended to beat the crap out of a Conservative that didn't like his book. Funny? Yeah, I thought it was silly & harmless too.

          J,

Perhaps you need a little refresher course on the meaning of "humor" here?  Humor is NOT funny when it's target is a Democrat, no, not funny. It furthers the conservative agenda and that is not funny, no, not funny.  You know, the whole idea of conservative humor and how its not blah, blah.....

Beyond that, the rules get all blurry.

Do you have any evidence that MMFA or any poster here is not taking this lightly?

Expressions of chagrin about Beck are directed at the overall body of his work, not this incident.

            I hear ya Tommy.

It seems to me that Republican/Conservatives not only laugh & joke about Democrat/Liberals, but are also capable of laughing & joking at themselves. Too few Dem/Libs seem to be able to do this, at least from what I've observed here.

We accept & even chuckle at jokes Dem/Libs aim at us. But Dem/Libs get really bent out of shape if they are the target...even of a harmless goof like Beck.

So who has the better sense of humor? ;-)

Tommy, I'd never lecture you on what's funny and what's not funny. Most of the posters here from both sides have pretty good senses of humor.

There are a few from both sides that have absolutely none.

There are plenty of things so pathetic that they're funny coming from every side and angle in this election period so far.

Beck is just not that funny a guy. He's just dumb enough to never be taken serious and he's too bland to laugh with or even to laugh at.

But then, I'm thinking if this guy can make the big bucks with his routine, maybe we should all take a shot at it.

Funny I'm listening to Howie Carr [Boston WRKO] as I write this, now he's not exactly a shock jock, but he is Boston's #1 talk radio host & he's as CONSERVATIVE as Rush Limbaugh [though not as offensive] and he's been tearing Mike Huckabee apart & making fun of him all afternoon for that Merry Christmas Ad he released today. Have you seen it?

Anyway Carr is friggin hilarious & not shy about attacking the Left or Right. Or pointing out their stupidity.

What I find funny is that I have heard your same argument, Jeter, but in the reverse (Liberals can laugh at themselves, Conservative cannot).  I guess humor can be partisan, too.  Personally, I find more comedians who are defined or define themselves as Democrats or Liberals to be more amusing than those on the Republican/Conservative side.

For example, I find Seth McFarlane's "Family Guy" and "American Dad" to be incredibly funny, but I can see how others would find these shows offensive.  With the digs he takes at Bush, Cheney, and Rove I have to imagine he is of Liberal bent.  Now, when Ann Coulter tries to be similarly "offensi-funny" I just find her offensive.  I must have a different histrionic sensibility than those who find Ann's jokes humorous.

Beck's antics fall more along Ann's schtick in my book.

Humor has to be present for me to find the joke funny, but maybe I just don't get the joke.  I love seeing the Dems roasted by someone like Jon Stewart because he's masterful at it.

I suppose there's a bit of an sardonic play with Beck mimicking Hillary shaving her face, since the typical tactic of her enemies is to characterize her as anything but feminine.

But I hate to admit it, honestly, I'm a little bit lost on the "Kool cigarettes" thing.  Maybe I could find this funny if I knew it was widely customary for men to smoke Kool cigarettes while shaving.  If there is a joke to be found here, it's a lame one.  Can someone fill me in?

OK, Skeeter and Timmy, here's a scenario for you.  Say Rachel Maddow or Sam Seder had a show on CNN and they were constantly "joking" about Mitt Romney, calling him a Mormon antichrist and a stereotypical poofta who shaves his legs and gets bikini waxes.  I'm sure the conservative noise machine, not to mention its MSM enablers, would be standing up for the liberal right to poke fun at repubs.  Gimme an F'in break.  For saying anything even close to what Beck, or Tucker Carlson, or Hannity, etc ad nauseum, has said about Clinton or Edwards or Obama or Kerry and Gore before them would get a lib broadcaster with the same forum tossed out on his/her ear and you freaking know it!

From the NY Post- Phil Mushnick

Nothing backfires louder than sportscasters who try too hard to be funny. Chris Berman, Dennis Miller, Tony Siragusa, Joe Buck, Lee Corso, Steve Lyons. Keith Olbermann, who should know by now that you can't force funny, has nonetheless tried to during his NBC Sunday Night NFL pre-game appearances. This past Sunday, following a highlights package, Olbermann said, "There's late news from the Patriots: Next week the Pats' 3 will face the Jets, rather than the team itself." Ugh. Sexist? Yes, especially from a fellow normally given to identifying and scolding social insensitivities. Cheap? Yes, that's the other reason they're called "throw-away lines." Funny? Beyond a grammar school-age audience, no.

Actually, after watching the video, it seems Horner tried brushing Beck’s initial comment off the second he realized Beck was “going there”. He scoffs as Beck continues, and finally says, “OK, Glenn. Yeah, in the white -- in the white muscle T-shirt. I see it too.”  Funny stuff? NOT – and Horner knew it but was just appeasing the host.

All I suggest is that if CNN wants some real political humor, they hire Franken - or get rid of this Pillsbury Doughboy and his yuk-a-yuk fifth grade “humor”. If I wanted Goofy, I’d watch the Disney Channel.

Everyone who agrees to appear on this show, from Gloria Estefan to Achy-Breaky Heart to Intelligence-Fiction writers who write guidebooks for terrorists suck up to this guy.  Whenever I see someone appear on his show, I lose a little respect.

He's not a journalist!, Beck inisists.

No @#$%, Sherlock, but why does 'Merica insist on letting douchebags like Beck "infotain" us so much?  (He enterforms me frequently, much to my chagrin- I only watch to see what great ideas he has for terrorists, so I can be prepared when they put his awesome ideas into practice)  And then why do we lie about where we get our information?  I have to say, though I didn't watch the video, I can tell from the stills that this bit was funny in a  way only chronic practitioners of self-love would find funny.

You think this was a case of being misunderstood or misinterpreted.  It was NOT.  It was the typical RANT by this guy well calculated to give the most hateful sort of impression about Mrs. Clinton.  Amazing that folks like him are so terrorized of Hillary's canidacy that they stoop to this sort of behavior.  Further, it is disgusting behavior out of a Mormon.  What in the world is he thinking of.  Well, it will not work.  I have heard many of my contemporary friends who say they plan to vote for Mrs. Clinton based simply on the hate filled media response to her and since the media never gets things right, they plan to ignore this sort of garbage and vote for hersanyway.  Me, I started out as a fan of Mrs. Clinton in light of the silly list of Republicans that are running this time.  None suit me at all.  I could vote for Romney at one time but seems like he has joined the pack of negative campaigners.  I am very disappointed in him as a Mormon and as a candidate.  If these TV and radio stars think they help other candidates by bad mouthing Hillary instead of stating the details of their guy's platform, they are just flat out wrong.

And you'll notice that no senator, including those who see a president in the mirror when they shave in the morning, has tried to move Kyoto through the Foreign Relations Committee or to the floor.

Doesn't anyone but me see the blatant sexism in this statement??!?! Or has  Kay Bailey Hutchinson and Blanche Lincoln (and my apologies to any other female senators that I can't bring to mind)  tried to move Kyoto through then?

Why is it that whenever I see a wingnut Republican attempting humor, Beavis and Butthead come to mind ?  It's like these people's humor maturity is limited to an 8th grade level.  It's funny to mime a woman shaving ?  What next ?  They'll mime her holding her d*ck and peeing ?  Scratching her balls ?  Jerking off ?  Why that'll just crack that wingnut audience up !!!  They love peepee-poopoo humor and misogyny !

Thanks, MMFA.  This made my day!

This article was a waste of internet space (which is something in and of itself as the internet, for all intents and purposes, is a renewable resource.)  Like we don't hear the Liberal equivalent on The Daily Show multiple times a day.  How many times have "Ann Coulter" and "transvestite" been used in the same sentence on the postings here?

Beck isn't a traditional newscaster.  His goal is "the fusion of entertainment and enlightenment," despite what your or anybody's opinions are.  If you don't think he's funny, it doesn't meanthat he isn't trying to be funny or that other people don't find it funny.  At least he wasn't insulting anyone's moral character in his joviality, like the baseless remarks that we get all the time like "Bush lied."

Maybe she ought to grow a beard.   MMFA included what is probably Rush's most unpartisan monlogue of recent in their "Old Hillary" article, which I suppose means that we are supposed to be outraged that Rush would even say that looks have anything to do with presidential politics.  Following that assumption, growing a beard shouldn't hurt Hillary's campaign any, although it didn't help Gore any.

GlennJericho: I don’t think anyone here was “outraged that Rush would even say that looks have anything to do with presidential politics”. The fact that this happens has been recognized and discussed here many times.

However, are such voters voting intelligently? I’d like to give you the benefit of the doubt and assume that you are not suggesting this.

Then can you understand that the outrage lies in the fact that bashing any candidate for their appearance breeds just that sort of ignorant thinking- and that anyone who encourages this should be considered preaching ignorance themselves?

everyone who wants franken to have a show should remember- he's not funny.  the best thing he could do for his failing career is to be counted with the other dead ex-snl performers.  (thank you carlin...) now that's funny.

I thought CNN held higher standards.  Beck is a Mormon and if this is the behavior of a man who claims to be religeous he must be a disappointment to his faith.  He does not however dispoint me because I have always held LOW EXPECTATIONS from him.  Very immature and CNN should do better background checks on their people because this is a step closer to the gutter.  I wonder if Beck has facial hair, usually adolecents don't.  He's pathetic and inconvienient.  Hillary as well as all intelligent woman have to have thick skin to put up with Kindergarten mentality. I do think Beck assumes all woman shave since his wife probably does, someone in the family has to.
