MSNBC's Adubato still questioning "exactly how Vince Foster died"

SUMMARY: MSNBC media analyst Steve Adubato asserted that Bill and Hillary Clinton "want the media to focus on [] only the positive aspects of her experience but won't say a word about such topics as ... exactly how [former deputy White House counsel] Vince Foster died." In fact, while some right-wing commentators and websites continue to suggest that the Clintons were somehow involved in Foster's death, numerous investigations into the matter have determined that his death was a suicide.

In a December 17 MSNBC.com column, MSNBC media analyst Steve Adubato asserted that Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) "has been a major media darling," and claimed that she and former President Bill Clinton "want the media to focus on are only [sic] the positive aspects of her experience but won't say a word about such topics as ... exactly how [former deputy White House counsel] Vince Foster died." Adubato went on to assert: "I'm betting if we in the media focused more on these topics, [Bill] Clinton would argue that the media was being unfair to Hilary [sic]." However, while some right-wing commentators and websites continue to suggest that the Clintons were somehow involved in Foster's death -- as Media Matters for America has documented (here, here, here, and here) -- numerous investigations into the matter determined that his death was a suicide. The Office of the Independent Counsel -- then headed by Kenneth Starr -- completed its inquiry into the circumstances surrounding Foster's death with a report issued on October 11, 1997, concluding, "based on investigation and analysis of the evidentiary record, that Mr. Foster committed suicide by gunshot in Fort Marcy Park."

TPM Media blogger-reporter Greg Sargent noted Adubato's column and wrote: "You have to be seriously lacking in self awareness to criticize Hillary for not talking about Vince Foster's death in the same article that claims that the media is being fair to Hillary [emphasis in original]."

Regarding Adubato's suggestion that Hillary Clinton has not talked about her "role as architect of the failed effort for universal healthcare," Sargent also wrote that "Hillary actually talks on the stump about her health care failure. You may not like what she says or think she goes into enough detail, but she does talk about it."

From Adubato's MSNBC.com column:

Bill Clinton has come to his wife Hillary's defense and I'm not convinced that's a good thing. Clinton blames the media for not covering his wife fairly and he argues that we in the media are not focusing enough on Hillary's experience, implying that we are holding her to a different and unfair standard. According to the former President, who has become more vocal in the campaign than anyone expected; "One percent of the press coverage was devoted to their record in public life . . . no wonder people think experience is irrelevant -- a lot of people covering the race think it is."

That's completely untrue. From the beginning of this absurdly long campaign, Hillary Clinton has been a major media darling, along with Barack Obama, Rudy Giuliani and now Mike Huckabee. What seems to be upsetting Clinton is that Hillary's campaign is off track and they can't figure out why. Bill and Hillary must have been beside themselves when Oprah decided to go public for Obama -- which culminated in joint appearances last weekend in both Iowa and South Carolina. The most powerful media figure in the country has never endorsed a candidate, much less campaigned for one, so publicly. Oprah even opted not to support Bill Clinton in his reelection campaign in 1996.

[...]

The fact is, Hillary's experience, we're talking in the United States Senate, right -- not as First Lady, has been covered by the media from day one. In a recent New York Daily News article, Dante Scala, a professor at the University of New Hampshire, stated; "For most of the year Hillary Clinton's argument on experience has been well received -- and well transmitted by the media." Further, most ardent Clinton supporters know that Clinton's blasting the media on the experience issue is a disingenuous diversion. They know the campaign is stumbling and they know it's not the media's fault.

What's really ironic about Clinton's argument is that it has been the Clinton campaign that has been exceedingly secretive about disclosing the former First Lady's records when she was in the White House. Bill and Hillary want the media to focus on are only the positive aspects of her experience but won't say a word about such topics as "Travelgate;" "Whitewater;" exactly how Vince Foster died; missing billing records; or Hillary's role as architect of the failed effort for universal healthcare.

Does Bill Clinton really want more media scrutiny of these areas of Hillary's so called "experience?" I don't think so. I'm betting if we in the media focused more on these topics, Clinton would argue that the media was being unfair to Hilary. He would probably say the media was focusing on the "wrong" aspects of Hilary's experience.

And it's a safe bet that he lacks the cojones to ask Hillary about Vince Foster's death to her face.

But heck, what about stray dogs? I know how one died. And to think the right wing is concerned about gays in the boy scouts...

since it was ken starr, the man who dug under every rock he could, who said he committed suicide, then what "exactly" are they supposed to clear up?  a signed confession maybe?  this is a "media analyst"?

Vince Foster committed suicide, there is NO question about it!! I don't see why all of the conservative pinheads feel otherwise. They are truly out of touch with reality. He was shot in the mouth, the gun was in his hand, and then a couple of days later the suicide note was found. There is nothing out of the ordinary there.

Personally, I don't really want to know "exactly how Vince Foster died". Just knowing that no evidence has ever pointed to anything other than suicide is enough for me, thank you. Spare me the gory details. Is this what Adubato is asking of Hillary? Ewww Dude, you’re sick!

The sick one was Limbaugh who started the rumor mill churning by announcing with "BREAKING NEWS!!!" that Hillary had Foster killed.

Why in the hell Limbaugh hasn't been sued is beyond me.  I'd love to see him lose everything he owns to a lawsuit, since he got everything he owns by doing evil deeds such as this.

      Will Nothing Be Said

MSNBC has gotten away with spending 90% of their news shows bashing Hillary Clinton. I say this as a Biden supporter. I just don't think it is somehow alright for this kind of bias to influence our political process.

We are in the process of picking the most important position in our government. MSNBC along with CNN and Fox have taken it upon themselves to destroy the Democratic front runner. This kind of influence in uncounterable and unequal in our process for picking our president. This obsession with Clinton is wrong and they have gotten totally away with it.

I would give an arm to reflect this nasty everyday practice of conservative media to attack the Democratic's best. They must be made to know America is aware of what they are trying to do.

Mr. Adubato, Why not just ask the Clintons on live TV about these topics? I am sure that you will get answers but you must be man enough to accept the answers.  You should be able to ask about any and all conspiracies that the Clintons are involved in. Then after the commercial break, Al Franken or any progressive/liberal gets to ask Pres. Bush and VP Cheney about their work in the White House...Sound fair..it may but what TV Channel would permit that kind of show?

Mr. Adubato, why have you betrayed all decent ethics of journalism? Next, you will be talking about castration. But, Hillary doesn't need to castrate you or Limbaugh or Hannity, etc. because you've castrated yourselves for the almighty dollar. If you don't believe that read your writings out loud. They are two-bit con.

Forget Foster. That is the least of Hillary's skeletons. Personally, I've never been satisfied with the responses to all those 500 or so FBI files that were mysteriously found in Mrs. Clinton's office. Once that is brought out in a debate, you'll see Hillary looking worse than that picture.

Whether it was some flunky who ordered them or not, (which doesn't pass the smell test if you ask me,) just having the files in her office has the look of impropriety which can easily be used to assail Hillary on her character. Nobody has to prove anything. All the Republicans have to do is put it out there and the media sharks will go into a frenzy.

If you think the SBVTs put the hurt on Kerry, you ain't seen nothing yet.

AA, here's an interesting item on Filegate, with a little give-and-take from two sides of the issue.

If you're researching items like this and Vince Foster on the internet, it's a good idea to get your critical thinking skills fired up, and your BS detector set to high. The bulk of the items on these are going to be from those who are working very hard to make issues of topics that may have become non-issues long ago.

Also notice in the link I provided, the side arguing for evidence of a scandal, in their first two responses, uses "probably" and "some say". Not signs of a good argument, unless you really want to believe what you already believe. ;0)

          HBL,

Thanks for the link. It all makes sense. I'll check that one off my list.

I was not researching Vince Foster or filegate or anything but only guessing as to what will happen if Hillary gets the nomination and how the Republicans will go after her. Strictly opinion on my part.

Perhaps, if the GOP brings up all these old issues she'll be able to turn it to her advantage.

          What do you think?

I think both sides are going to use everything at their disposal, and it may get pretty ugly.I only wish that our media was a little more conscientious about doing their part to preventg some of the more trivial or questionable stuff from getting out there uncontested.

Of course the conservative nuts are going to go after Hillary about anything and everything because they are scared of her. They will bring up Vince Foster, Whitewater, Gennifer Flowers, Monica Lewinsky, Tony Moser, Charles Ruff, James McDougal, Sandy Hume, Mary Mahoney and whatever else they can dig up. They have NOTHING!! It's pathetic, really.
