Fox News graphic: "Rudov: Clinton's 'nagging voice' is reason she lost male vote"
SUMMARY: On Your World, Marc Rudov, author of Under the Clitoral Hood: How to Crank Her Engine Without Cash, Booze, or Jumper Cables, asserted: "When Barack Obama speaks, men hear, 'Take off for the future.' And when Hillary Clinton speaks, men hear, 'Take out the garbage.' " During his appearance on the show, on-screen text read: "Rudov: Clinton's 'nagging voice' is reason she lost male vote."
During the January 4 edition of Fox News' Your World, host Neil Cavuto introduced a segment with Marc Rudov, author of Under the Clitoral Hood: How to Crank Her Engine Without Cash, Booze, or Jumper Cables, and Fox News legal analyst and University of Washington associate professor of law Lis Wiehl about the January 3 Democratic caucuses in Iowa: "[M]en overwhelmingly picking Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton in Iowa. Why? Well, Marc Rudov says it's because of her nagging voice." The program then aired clips from several Clinton campaign appearances and displayed on-screen text reading: "Rudov: Clinton's 'nagging voice' is reason she lost male vote." At Cavuto's request, Rudov then explained his argument, asserting: "When Barack Obama speaks, men hear, 'Take off for the future.' And when Hillary Clinton speaks, men hear, 'Take out the garbage.' "

After Wiehl challenged Rudov's characterization of male voters in Iowa, Rudov offered the following support for his argument: "I get into lots of taxicabs and I tell the drivers this whole thing about Hillary being shrill, and they say, 'That's right. That's right. You're exactly right.' " Later in the exchange, Rudov asserted that Clinton "does register with married men, like a small worm boring through the brain."
From the January 4 edition of Fox News' Your World with Neil Cavuto:
CAVUTO: All right, well men -- men overwhelmingly picking Barack Obama over Hillary Clinton in Iowa. Why? Well, Marc Rudov says it's because of her nagging voice. Listen.
[begin video clip]
CLINTON: So go to the caucus tomorrow. Stand up for me for one night.
CLINTON: Get elected in the first place. To go in to the White House.
CLINTON: To get our country back. To do what Americans do together, and to feel pride and confidence in the goodness and greatness of America again.
CLINTON: Safeguard our civil liberties, our rights and our privacy.
[end video clip]
CAVUTO: All right, well, Marc has been saying it for months, men won't vote for Hillary Clinton because she reminds them of their nagging wives. Lis Wiehl, of course, agrees. No, she doesn't. I'm just seeing if Lis is watching.
WIEHL: No.
CAVUTO: All right, so, Marc, explain.
RUDOV: Well, you know on November 9th, I predicted this, and this is exactly what happened. It's very interesting. When Barack Obama speaks, men hear, "Take off for the future." And when Hillary Clinton speaks, men hear, "Take out the garbage."
CAVUTO: Well, all right.
RUDOV: When Hillary, Hillary tried in the last week of the campaign to be gentle and kind and civil, but it was too little, too late. And men -- you know, the first time men hear nagging, they get post-traumatic stress disorder, and they never recover from it.
CAVUTO [laughing]: All right, I don't find that that silly, I'm just wondering how it sounds.
[...]
RUDOV: Hillary tried in the last week of the campaign to be gentle and kind and civil, but it was too little and too late. And men -- you know, when -- the first time men hear nagging, they get posttraumatic stress disorder, and never recover from it.
CAVUTO: All right, I don't find that that silly. I'm just wondering how that sounds. Lis, you, of course, agree?
WIEHL [in high voice]: Marc, I don't know what you're talking about. She just sounds hoarse, not shrill. What are you talking about? Take out the garbage.
[crosstalk]
CAVUTO: Well, what do you -- something happened?
WIEHL: I agree. She sounds hoarse. Look, look --
RUDOV: Lis, I can't tell the difference between this week and last week.
WIEHL: With me?
RUDOV: With you.
WIEHL: No, no. Listen, Marc, though, seriously.
RUDOV: Yes, seriously.
WIEHL: Your argument totally fails, because you know what? The percentage point between single men, you know, single men that voted for Obama and Hillary was a difference of 12 percent. Between married men that voted between Obama and Clinton, it was 2 percent. So more married men --
CAVUTO: Well, single men also have girlfriends, right? It could remind them of their girlfriend.
WIEHL: Well, I think that Marc would argue that once the wife becomes a wife, that's when she becomes shrill. Right, Marc?
RUDOV: Absolutely. As a matter of fact, Lis, when you talk to me, I think you say my name 25 times in 15 seconds. And that's what it reminds me of.
WIEHL: That's an endearing thing.
RUDOV: Oh, yes, especially when you're tilting your head, rolling your eyes back. Now, the thing is is that --
WIEHL: Marc, the stats don't -- you can make fun of me all you want, but the stats don't lie. Twelve percent for single men difference --
RUDOV: Yeah, Lis, I get into lots of taxicabs and I tell the drivers this whole thing about Hillary being shrill, and they say, "That's right. That's right. You're exactly right."
WIEHL: And, Marc, why is it that when a man says something like, "Go for the future," it's all of this, you know, it's -- he's visionary, and when a woman says the same thing, albeit in a hoarse voice, she's shrill, and she's a, you know, word that I can't use on this family show here?
RUDOV: If you're familiar with Meg Whitman, who's the CEO of eBay -- when she speaks, she's an amazing speaker, she's great to listen to. I'll listen to her any day of the week. But here's the thing: Style is the substance -- sorry. Style is the gateway --
WIEHL: Yeah, get it right, Marc. Get your style right.
RUDOV: Style is the gateway to substance. If you don't have good style, if you don't connect with the audience, they're going to tune you out. They're never gonna hear you.
WIEHL: But Marc --
CAVUTO: He's right there. That's the story of my life. But go ahead.
RUDOV: And that is why Neil Cavuto is so successful.
WIEHL: Oh, are you kissing up now?
CAVUTO: Exactly. That's exactly right.
WIEHL: But the point is, has nothing to do with her voice. You may not like her message, you may not like what she's saying. But you may not like that she wasn't -- that she didn't appear to be for change, that she came out with the husband, who's bringing her down.
[crosstalk]
CAVUTO: OK, so take the voice out of it, then. Why doesn't she register with men?
RUDOV: Lis, you just ignored what I said. Her style was terrible.
WIEHL: She does register, I think, with married men. There is a 2 percent difference here, and this is in Iowa, which is a fairly, you know, conservative place. There may already be some prejudices against women to begin with. So just a 2 percent difference, as opposed to a 12 percent difference for single men, I think speaks volumes.
RUDOV: She does register with married men, like a small worm boring through the brain. It's not going to happen, and there are 49 more states to go, and it's not going to happen.
WIEHL: All right, Marc. Let's just keep on checking in on this, all right? Because I'm betting you.
RUDOV: And I'm still waiting for that tie from you, Lis.
WIEHL [in high voice]: I'm still betting you.
CAVUTO: Man. All right. Look, this is just an unscientific survey.
RUDOV: I rest my case, Neil. I rest my case.
CAVUTO: All right. That's fine. I have a feeling I'll be sleeping outside the house tonight.

I always wondered what books the family values party read. Now I know.
You left out one, and scroll to the bottom to see what kind of music the righties like.
MISOGYNIST.
The hatred, dislike, or mistrust of WOMEN.
What causes it? Nurture, nature, or some combination?
Mommy issues, perhaps. A male childhood of rejection and humiliation. Feelings of inadequacy, or maybe just inadequate.
Who knows what factors makes men like Rush Limbaugh unable to relate in the most basic social levels with women?
It may even be genetic, a Darwin-like corrective mechanism which mutates in those who should not be breeding.
Whatever the cause, the result can be seen throughout history, paternalistic social structures in which men's ideas were valued, while women's were not. Even in early America, women could not vote or own property (they WERE property, of their husbands/masters).
Times are changing, and these old ideas are joining the relics of dinosaurs. Unfortunately, some of those dinosaurs are still walking around on two legs, and in America, their home is the Republican Party. The clubhouse sign reads, "NO GURLS ALOUD!"
Sad.
I wasn't aware that being under the clitoral hood was where the action is supposed to be.
It's not, if one has a wide stance.
Under the Clitoral Hood: How to Crank Her Engine Without Cash, Booze, or Jumper Cables
I'm just going by the imagery in his book's title, but I'm guessing his wife looks forward to her encounters in bed like she would jumping in front of a drunk driver. If he's not married, I'd guess he's not really doing much without cash.
I'm a woman and the word "crank" makes me cringe. Something tells me Rudov is suffering from NGA syndrome. (Not Getting Any.)
She lost because she's stupid. She's making mistake after mistake, and Obama doesn't have to go on the offensive. All he has to do is repeat himself over and over and let Hillary blow herself up.
Feel free to have fun with that last part.
What mistakes is she making ? Is she being too assertive and strong for a woman, according to our ridiculous biased gender standard ? We're never going to have a woman President if people don't start accepting women as sharing some of the same personality characteristics as men.
Uh - supporting our standing President while giving lipservice to Progressives is a pretty big mistake, in my book.
Oh, wait - were you preferring to talk about her hair or clothes instead of her actual politics, which stink to high heaven?
She lost because Obama is fresh, it is not her they are voting against, they are voting for Obama.
DORIS:
Specifically, "they" are voting AGAINST Bush, AGAINST Cheney, and AGAINST "more of the same". Obama is the candidate LEAST linked to the political machinery, the freshest face, the best chance to leave ALL the old ways out in the cold.
If Obama gets the nomination, I stand ready to support him whole-heartedly. Same goes for Edwards or Hillary. (Even Dodd or Biden would have made great presidents.)
I understand the desire for a complete change, because the well has been completely poisoned by Bush and Co.
If the cab company has become completely corrupt, the idea throwing the old crew out and bringing in novices and strangers is appealing.
But it may not be wise.
If hiring a new team of cabbies, it's best to check if they know how to drive, and it helps if they know the town's roads. Starting from scratch SOUNDS good, but in practice, it may be too severe a change. That's why I believe Hillary to be the best bet.
And NOBODY can doubt her leadership will be the polar opposite of W's ... in style AND policy. And I do not believe she will be shy about investigating corruptions ... given that power. Perhaps that might be looked at as "payback" and somewhat vindictive on her part, but it would be GREAT for the nation!
You mean she hasn't uttered the words 'change' and 'hope' over a thousand times in the last 2 weeks.
So why is Fox allowing the lost brother from Everybody Loves Raymond to peddle this garbage. You want to talk about a voice I don't want to hear. This guy is an idiot. I wish I was surprised he ended up on Fox.
Why are you watching, then? Independant thinkers turn the channel when there is something on they think is garbage. It's too bad you aren't allowed choices where you live.
That's like saying we should ignore Osama bin Laden because we don't like his message.
No, atheist, it is not at all like that. Try to keep up with the conversation, ok?
This rejoinder from a guy who fell off the turnip truck. (pssst, he thinks torture works).
Ah..... we men can be so shallow sometimes....can't we.
FYI ladies...... this ass-clown in no way represents me.....
Besides..... I have to be for womens rights/lib..... married 18 years and 3 daughters......
Sometimes...... ya just can't win! :)
I vote for Fran Drescher for president.
Speaking of voices. I want to throw a shoe at the TV when Cavuto speaks in 'sotto voce' when interviewing someone he agrees with or Rupert Murdoch but then raises his voice and interrupts if he doesn't agree with them. He gives sanctimony a bad name.
A somewhat heavy-handed note I sent to FOX... I know, I know! We're supposed to be "nice" when sending in comments but I couldn't help myself!... *WHEW* You've got to be kidding with this tripe, right? This example of pure bull feces might strike a chord with the 50/60 years-old miserable misanthropic white men who make up the brunt of your audience, but for the rest of us, it is just another nail in the coffin of FIXed "news" broadcast funeral, which will eventually lead your network down the road to the cemetery to be buried in amongst all the other forgotten crap of the broadcast industry. I don't care who owns you. Rupert Murdoch, or not...even Jesus can't save you from your future. With every utterance of this kind... with every false narrative you speak, you draw closer to that crypt. And I, for one, cannot wait! So, keep up the good work. But, while you do, take a good look around you fellas. It's 2008! The world has changed! This sort of half-joking/half-serious sexist rhetorical commentary might have gone over big in 1958, but... This word of warning; there's a quiet revolution happening. You can't hear it because your collective ears are full of your own voices, but it's coming just the same. ...forgive me Media Matters. I had ta do it!
Fox gets several type of letters like yours everyday -- they know what they're doing and they don't care, it's about audience numbers and there are enough small minds to build an audience.
Cavuto who is Sr VP, Anchor & Managing Editor of Business News and FOX Business Network should be proud.
His new business network is pulling in more than 6,000 viewers per day according to The Nielson Ratings. That's SIX THOUSAND per day. I didn't forget a few zeros.
This doesn't mean much to most of us, but to the Fox News sycophants and shills who post here ratings are everything.
I'll write fast before my wife [in her best imitation of Hillary] nags me to take out the garbage ;-)
This little discussion between Cavuto & this clown Rudov has to be the stupidest on record, & there is some great competition for that award out there that it beats out.
I suppose I could point out that a male [or female] Hillary supporter wouldn't be swayed to change their vote, nor do I believe a male [or female] sitting on the fence would be persuaded to vote for Obama or Edwards because of this silly observation by Rudov. So I might just shrug it off as harmless idiocy.
But I wouldn't ask WITH? It belongs here for sure.
This is just further affirmation [not that one needs it] that FOX is a right-wing propaganda tool, it also is an excellent example, IMO, that FOX is self-destructing.
I get into lots of taxicabs and I tell the drivers this whole thing about Hillary being shrill, and they say, "That's right. That's right. You're exactly right."
So I guess Hillary shouldn't cater to the taxi-cab driver electorate.
Does anyone else think Fux is making a mistake continuing to assault Clinton when Obama has just won Iowa ? Obama can handily beat any of the Republican candidates. I think the blowhards at Fux are so blinded by their bloodlust for Clinton that they can't see the big picture. They should be tearing Obama apart.
Her voice is only agonizing because people are tired of her other attributes, such as flip flopping and not answering questions; she is deceptive, and people know it. This is not one sided as I don’t care for Bush either and am sad to say that I voted for him. I believe both Clinton and Bush lie, are deceptive, enjoy the power positions for the personal gain of their friends and selves, and do very little to satisfy the masses of Americans. As for Clinton, the White House is merely a novelty for her. As for Bush, why hasn’t any democratic candidate harped on the fact that two border patrol agents are in prison for trying to protect the borders against dope dealers while bush reduced Libby’s perjury sentence to ensure he didn’t end up in jail?
A NOTE ON REPUBLICAN WOMEN:
You KNOW your fellow male Republicans do not value you as an EQUAL. You know any RESPECT they hold for you is related to motherhood and housekeeping duties, and that there is value (if not respect) in "pleasing your man."
You know your place.
Here's something WE know about you, by your chosen political affiliation: You believe your role to be correctly defined.
You will accept whatever position is ALLOWED by the men.
To any citizen who values Freedom and Equality, that is simply unacceptable.
Tex, these women are free to have a career. They just need a gig like Dr. Laura or Phyllis Shafley or any other number of Republican women that tell other women to do as they say, not as they do. :-)
Seriously, I do think you're overstating just a tad, even though I do love your posts. And to stay on topic, this Rudov guy is rude and crude. Anybody who has this title for a book is not a person who should be listened to for very obvious reasons. I bet he's paid a woman or two to get a boob job. Or maybe he was a judge at the Hawaiin Tropics sun tan gig with OJ, ya know the babes in bikinis fest. I don't think guys like him attract quality women. So what should anyone care what he thinks about anything.
JULIA:
I actually HOPE I'm overstating, but to arrive at that conclusion, I'd need an example of a Republican woman who does NOT fit the model.
You named two, both help prove my point.
YOU do NOT fit the model, but you're not a Republican, which circumstantially strengthens my assertion.
Still, I stand ready to be proven wrong.
Perhaps Condi Rice will actually DO something on her own, and show that being "given" a high-profile position by a man, and values ability and initiative rather than fealty and obedience. I haven't seen it yet from Condi.
I actually HOPE I'm overstating, but to arrive at that conclusion, I'd need an example of a Republican woman who does NOT fit the model. Tex
My mother and my oldest sister. Neighbors of mine. Ordinary people. They are people of dignity and my Dad needed my Mom far more than she needed him and he knew it. But I do agree that many fit your mold. And I WAS joking about Dr. L and PS.
JULIA:
I realize how difficult (and usually useless) it is to try to talk with older folks, particularly relatives, about why they are "lifelong Republicans".
Basically, they hate or distrust Liberals just as they were taught to hate and fear "Commies". Plus, they still buy into the myths that ONLY Republicans can be trusted with the military and the economy, and to keep the government small. MYTHS, because these are provably FALSE claims made over decades. The opposite is true, but relentless propaganda keeps people misinformed.
Republican policy serves the monied elites, period. But the monied elites don't have the numbers to put Republicans into office. So, Republicans have to lie about IMAGE, they have to fearmonger, rumormonger, and play to prejudices and hatreds.
Misogynists and religious bigots have a home in the GOP. "Log Cabin" gays claim to support Republicans DESPITE being loathed as a group BY the Republicans, and facing GOP fashioned legislation designed to deny them the same rights other citizens enjoy.
It makes no sense to me. Sure, if I were a CEO with swelling offshore accounts, I could be expected to vote GOP; it would be in my personal financial self interest.
But why a "ordinary, regular" person would vote GOP, looking at the record of what the GOP have done and wish to do with America ... for some reason, they just don't understand how badly they are voting against their own best interests. They have been fooled. And it's hard to respect that.
I agree with everything you just said. When I talk with my Mom she has concerns that sound just like a democrat's concerns. But it's somehow just a "gut" thing because even though she is intelligent, she still on a gut level doesn't like Dems, especially HRC. I wouldn't categorize her as one of the authoritarian followers because she has a very independent spirit, but she flumoxes me with her fealty to the Repubs. But that being said, I'm like you. I don't know why anybody votes for Republicans, unless like you said - they are very wealthy.
I saw Dennis Kucinich on Bill Moyer's journal tonight (aired last night), and I have to say, he is very impressive. He called himself a Democrat's Democrat and he does seem to be the only one that fits me down to a tee, but alas he's not a front runner or even close. I wish he could get his message out there bettter.
"...I don't know why anybody votes for Republicans, unless like you said - they are very wealthy."
Even then, JJ, they have to be very wealthy and short-sighted.(Greed does that)
Ah, yes, greed. Called "i've got mine" Republicanism.
They just need a gig like Dr. Laura or Phyllis Shafley or any other number of Republican women that tell other women to do as they say, not as they do. :-)
I always loved Phyllis Schlafly, a woman who travels all over the country telling women their place is in the home.
That the Lace Curtain is finally parting and Men's Rights Advocates are being given an opportunity to voice their opinions does not sit well with gender Feminists and their Political Allies. Too bad. For decades only Feminists were interviewed on the Subject of Gender. With NOW's latest viewpoint or talking points given a National Forum.
Every once in a while another Woman with an opposing viewpoint was heard.
The demographic ignored by the Democrats is White working Men. They put Republicans in the White House in the last Elections where Republicans won. And neither party cares about us. America according to that Ultra Conservative Bill Maher is a Gynocracy. Where Women matter and Men do not.
Rudov's point is simple. Hilliary the Brand, evokes the visage of the Angry Mother in Law who hates you if you are a Male. She has serious negative polling numbers. And Hilliary refuses to reveal who she really is. There is talk within her campaign of her withdrawing from the race.
Attempts to shame or insult Mr. Rudov, does not address the substance of the issues he raises. And is being ignored by Men in the US as the usual Gender Feminist tactics of using the Straw Man to beat down.
