Does Chris Matthews have a problem with women?
Using overtly sexist language, he has referred to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) as a "she devil" and compared her to a "strip-teaser." He has called her "witchy" and likened her voice to "fingernails on a blackboard." He has referred to men who support her as "castratos in the eunuch chorus." He has suggested Clinton is not "a convincing mom" and said "modern women" like Clinton are unacceptable to "Midwest guys." He has called her "Madame Defarge" and "Nurse Ratched."

After Clinton won the New Hampshire Democratic primary, Matthews asserted: "[T]he reason she may be a front-runner is her husband messed around." He described her performance at a debate last Saturday as apparently "good enough to seem good enough here for women who wanted to root for her anyway."
His sexism is hardly limited to comments about Clinton. During coverage of the New Hampshire primary, he said that Clinton is the only viable woman presidential candidate "on the horizon." He couldn't think of a single female governor eligible to run: "Where are the big-state women governors?" he asked. "Where are they? Name one." In fact, several of the states that currently have women governors are comparable in population to the states in which the male presidential candidates serve or have served as governor.
In November 2006, shortly after the Democrats took the majority in Congress, Matthews asked a guest if then-presumptive speaker-elect Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was "going to castrate Steny Hoyer" if Hoyer (D-MD) were elected House majority leader.
During coverage of a presidential debate last spring, NBC News chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell was compelled to remind Matthews that Sen. Barack Obama's (D-IL) wife, Michelle, is a Harvard-educated lawyer after he focused obsessively on her physical appearance.
The good news is that people are speaking out against Matthews' flagrant, persistent sexism.
Of the New Hampshire primary results, the blog TalkLeft, observed:
"It was a revolt of women sick and tired of the likes of Chris Tweety Matthews and the Media Misogynists.
Barack Obama did not lose New Hampshire. The Media did. Their misogynist hatred of Hillary Clinton was soundly rejected by the voters. Especially the women voters of New Hampshire.
How the Media will react to this well deserved rebuke is the question. And let's be clear, Chris Matthews should be removed from covering this race. His offensive behavior is a disgrace to NBC."
It's time to play a little "hardball." Please contact MSNBC and Chris Matthews today and let them know what you think.

To whom it may concern: I thought you would be interested to know that the appalling way Chris Matthews, Tucker Carlson, and to a lesser extent Keith Olbermann talked about Hillary Clinton before, during, and after the NH primary debate actually caused me to switch my allegiance from Edwards to her. Similarly, my sister-in-law switched from Obama to Hillary. Fortunately we Democrats are spoiled for choice -- any of the three of them would make a fine president -- so we have the luxury of being able to switch allegiances based on our visceral distaste for the misogynistic piling-on that has being passing for political commentary on MSNBC for weeks. The unsubstantiated and insulting suggestion, following the election, that racism was somehow a factor in Hillary's win only solidified that we'd made the right decision. Simply put, if the self-important misogynists of MSNBC -- some of whom have for years been propping up the debacle that is George W. Bush -- hate Hillary so much, she must be doing something right. I except from this, by the way, Dan Abrams, who alone on MSNBC has showed class -- not to mention superior political insight. I am now an avid viewer of his show. Speaking of insight, here's some for you: when the person on one of your panels with the most enlightened view of women voters is Pat Buchanan, you've got a problem. Regards, JB
There is an obvious loss of interest in posting at this site ever since - you would think that by now they'd have noticed posts are down about 50% due to user frustration. This morning I sent a lengthy email numerically detailing all these new bugs, but apparently it has fallen on deaf ears. The very least they could do is put up a small notice on the login screen or the home page acknowledging the problems and informing users of the status of fixes.
For that reason, I attended a rally for Hillary Clinton in Denver. I was impressed with what she had to say, though not yet convinced, though drawn to her as a woman who might make it as I dreamed Pat Schroeder or Barbara Jordan might before her. And I spoke with several women at that rally who repeated the desire not to have another man in office who would deal only with the good ole' boys in the boys' locker room. In other words, they just finally WANT a woman as President.
I've watched/listened to the debates also, after also watching Congressional hearings, etc., and listening to her question the witnesses. She impresses me with her knowledge of detail on so many issues.
BUT....as I've watched the male media talking heads and the male pundits--and some of the ridiculous female conservative pundits--bash Hillary, I've become increasingly annoyed.
I am, afterall, of her generation. I have watched the commencement address she gave back when. I watched her in the political arena all these years. I found that I have begun pulling for her to win the nomination.
The awful, gleeful headlines after the Iowa caucus, where the Baptist farm wives did not support her and the debate in New Hampshire where the young Obama and Edwards ganged up on her and made fun of her experience finally decided my vote.
You go girl!
I respectfully request Chris Matthews be admonished, penalized and made to apologize or else permanently removed from the air.

Bet they all would have been happy in Salem during the witch trials and executions, denouncing women and sending them to their deaths.
Matthews does not belong on the same network as Keith Obermann who makes no personal attacks.

Hmm....
No one has mentioned the obvious, and constantly changing, "man crushes". Not that there is anything wrong with that...
FYI: It's Nurse Ratchet, a reference to the mechanical, masculine nurse in One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest by Ken Kesey.
There should be more news people who are not afraid to express themselves. He is right about Clinton.
I agree with everything barbara Walters and the ladies on the view said about Chris, beside biong a woman hater, he is a closeted rupublican that voted for george bush in 2000
why does msnbc still have that wack job on the station..... time for the womens groups to go after his spondors

My paragraphing is now fixed. It would be nice, however, if LINKS would automatically be highlighted, and if hitting "next" would take you to the TOP of the next page. Hope you mentioned these, too.

NOW, about Matthews. I hesitate to "take action" when I fear it might be successful. Matthews is part of the political process in America today, thanks to "our Media", and his inclusion, as with all things, is for good or ill.
At the moment, thanks to the Gods of Sanity, Matthews is actually HELPING Hillary in particular, and also no doubt HELPING to bring out angry Democratic voters, who are sick and tired of blatant rightwing media bias.
The more Matthews is ON, the better it is for ME and the causes I champion.
For over a decade, I have watched not only Matthews, but also O'Reilly, and Beck and others ... and wondered if they were being effective in promoting the cause of the GOP ... after all, the GOP has been electorally successful since 1994. Of course, then there was Limbaugh and Hannity and Savage and Coulter and Ingraham and dozens of others on the RADIO practicing their HATE SPEECH against Democrats and Liberals. The demonizing was successful, inasmuch as Republicans seemed to be winning at the ballot box. I couldn't believe it, I couldn't understand it.
But now the trend has changed, REVERSED. The demonizing has been SO hateful and SO unfair and SO one-sides for SO long, we are now seeing a backlash (backfire, blowback, whatever term is appropriate). Rightwing HATE has energized Democrats, and they are turning out as never before.
WHY would I want Matthews -- or any of the OTHER Rightwing hatemongers -- to quit NOW? They're finally doing some GOOD for this nation! I say, let 'em rant, let 'em keep digging that hole!
I certainly see your point on this, TEX, but I'll say I believe these hatemongers and liars should be held accountable for their misinformation and their misuse of public airspace. As a female, my approach is less, "Ha ha! He just sent another 100K votes our way," and more of, "Where the f*@& does MSNBC get off paying this man to degrade women on prime time television!?"
He's been doing it for quite some time, it's not just limited to HRC (see his remarks about Michelle Obama, and his use of feminization of JE as an insult), and it's completely unacceptable. If we don't fight at least one of these so-called "liberal" networks for the right to fair and accurate coverage, we will be left with nothing but blogs and the occasional newspaper article for accurate and fair reporting. This, also, is unacceptable.
MSNBC and CNN should be continually taken to task by the progressive and Democratic elements of this country, because we are in sincere need of news agencies that can lend their clout, reputation, and investigative funds to reporting the Truth, instead of bias and lies.

I sent letters to both Matthews and the MSNBC Letters e-mail addresses.
(I sent them "return receipt requested")
Within minutes I got this e-mail:
I quit watching Matthews a long time ago. He would make 'Worst Person in the World' about 2 or 3 times a week if he were on another network. You know things are really bad when O'Reilly says he 'went too far'. It's time for him to spend more time with his family or MSNBC should just fire him, and when I say fire him, I mean like a human cannon ball, right over to FOX. As he exits the cannon, he would be quoted as saying -
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!
