Matthews' sexist displays go beyond Clinton

January 11, 2008 6:11 pm ET

SUMMARY: Chris Matthews -- who claimed that Sen. Hillary Clinton is a U.S. senator and presidential candidate because "her husband messed around" and that "[s]he didn't win [her Senate seat] on her merit" -- has an extensive history of attacking Clinton, but his sexist commentary has hardly been limited to her.

During the January 9 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe,* Chris Matthews -- host of MSNBC's Hardball -- discussed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's (D-NY) victory* in the January 8 Democratic primary and said, "[T]he reason she's a U.S. senator, the reason she's a candidate for president, the reason she may be a front-runner is her husband messed around. That's how she got to be senator from New York. We keep forgetting it. She didn't win there on her merit. She won because everybody felt, 'My God, this woman stood up under humiliation,' right? That's what happened."

But, while Matthews has an extensive history of attacking Clinton, his sexist commentary has hardly been limited to her. Following the Democrats' victory in the November 2006 midterm elections, for example, Matthews asked a guest if then-speaker-to-be Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) was "going to castrate" Rep. Steny Hoyer (D-MD) if he were elected House majority leader.

Following are other examples of Matthews' sexist commentary:

  • Also during MSNBC's January 8 primary coverage, Matthews said that Clinton is the only viable woman presidential candidate "on the horizon." He asked: "Where are the governors? Where are the big state women governors? Where are they? Name one. They don't exist." Referring to Gov. Jennifer Granholm (D-MI), Matthews added: "Michigan, she's a Canadian. She can't make it." In fact, at least four women governors currently head states whose population size is comparable to male governors who are currently seeking or sought the presidency in 2008. Currently, seven states have female governors.
  • On the September 12, 2007, edition of Hardball, Matthews began an interview with right-wing radio host Laura Ingraham by stating: "You are -- I'm not allowed to say this, but I'll say it -- you're beautiful and you're smart. And you've got a huge radio audience." When the interview ended, he asked: "Can I sing your praises?" adding, "I get in trouble for this, but you're great looking, obviously. You're one of the gods' gifts to men in this country. But also, you are a hell of a writer."

During the interview, Matthews also stated: "But it is interesting; all day long on this network and others, I'm seeing pictures of Britney Spears. ... [S]he is showing no talent. She's showing her body. She's obviously a good-looking young woman, wearing very little."
  • On the August 10, 2007, edition of Hardball, during a discussion of financial news, Matthews told CNBC's Erin Burnett, "[Y]ou're beautiful," and, "You're a knockout," before closing the interview by saying, "It's all right getting bad news from you." Matthews also asked Burnett: "Could you get a little closer to the camera?" Burnett replied, "My -- what is it?" Matthews then said: "Come on in closer. No, come in -- come in further -- come in closer. Really close." After Burnett began to comply, Matthews stated, "Just kidding! You look great! Anyway, thanks, Erin, it's great to -- look at that look. You're great."

A few days later, according to a "Page Six" article in the New York Post, Matthews "told Page Six he was only fooling around with Burnett because the camera lens had already made her appear closer than usual. 'It was this weird fishbowl look. ... I was just kidding around.' "
  • During MSNBC's April 26, 2007, coverage of the first Democratic presidential debate, Matthews discussed the "cosmetics" of the evening. In doing so, he complimented Michelle Obama's pearl necklace and declared that she "looked perfect," "well-turned out ... attractive -- classy, as we used to say. Like Frank Sinatra, 'classy.' "

Matthews said: "Some people are, by the way, just watching tonight. They stopped listening a half-hour in, and they noticed how pretty she is -- Michelle -- and they said, 'I like the fact he's [Barack Obama] got this pretty wife. He's happily married. I like that.' They like the fact that Hillary was demure, lady-like in her appearance." When NBC chief foreign affairs correspondent Andrea Mitchell interjected, noting "You're talking about two ... lawyers," who went to "Harvard and Yale," Matthews responded, "Cosmetics are a part of this game."
  • Discussing the victory speeches of Clinton and Pelosi during MSNBC's election coverage on November 7, 2006, Matthews said to Republican pollster Frank Luntz, "Pelosi ... has to do the good fight against the president over issues like minimum wage and reforming -- perhaps -- prescription drugs, so that people can afford drugs and get them in a program that's easy to understand. All kinds of things like that she'll have to go head-to-head with this president. How does she do it without screaming? How does she do it without becoming grating?"
*Correction: This item originally stated that "[d]uring MSNBC's coverage of the January 8 New Hampshire Democratic primary, Chris Matthews -- host of MSNBC's Hardball -- discussed Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's (D-NY) victory and said, '[T]he reason she's a U.S. senator, the reason she's a candidate for president, the reason she may be a front-runner is her husband messed around.' " Matthews made that comment on the January 9 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe, while discussing Clinton's victory in the New Hampshire primary. Media Matters for America regrets the error.

I remember seeing many of the segments mentioned here. Thanks for reminding me just how creepy this guy really is.

It could be his meds, or maybe his wife was giving him the cold shoulder for an extended period of time. I'll shut up before I start feeling sorry for him - but, you know how us bleeding heart libruls always need to know the reason behind someone's bizarre behavior.

So, you use his compliments to Laura Ingraham and his less than flattering remarks about Britney Spears as further proof of his sexism? Aren't men, or women for that matter, allowed to compliment one another to their face, directly? Is that sexist? I would imagine that would be each individual's call, in this case Ingrahams. As for Spears, was that sexist as well discussing her lack of clothing or his opinion of her talent?..........this is just silly, we know it's all about tearing Matthews apart now, go for the jugular.........but you're just looking gratuitous and petty.

Matthews knows he's acting inappropriately and doesn't give a damn. Why do you think he said "I'm not allowed to say this."

If Ingraham and Matthews were on a date his behavior would be appropriate.

His sexism has caused him to act in a totally unprofessional manner.

        The viewer deserve better.

And so does the guest! Could you imagine walking into a doctors office and have him or her start flirting with you? (No smarta$s comments please) - Anyhow, professionals demand and deserve being treated as such. In some of these segments it is blatantly obvious he made the guest uncomfortable. It just makes my skin crawl.

This morning on Joe Scarborough Matthews was livid, seething that MMFA had called him out on Hillary hating...that articles continue to pop up on him here is no surprise. IMHO Matthews has called this on himself and here is what I mean, partisan politics aside cable news guys are going for edgier content. In hopes of netting higher ratings these people are pushing the envelope, then when they get caught they play naive, all "aw shucks I can't say that?" Gimme a break.

Its the same thing that happened to Imus...if you make your money fanning flames pardon me for not offering a tissue when you get burned.

He repeated the only reason HRC was elected senator was because Bill Clinton "messed around" and referred viewers to the NY Post of all places.

This is a good example of right wing talking points making their way into the media and being accepted as fact.

I don't think he even realizes how insulting this is to HRC and to the voters of New York who have elected her twice.

        Tommy,

Do you just automatically come to defense of anyone MMFA critiques?. You're a smart guy and if you have ever seen CM's shows you know that he is quite often inappropriate about a lot of things including gender issues. I've personally seen shows with him inappropriately on air flirting with many female guests (he only fawns over the guys when there not there) including and I can't remember her name but she’s the very elegant African American wife of Bill Clinton's ex secretary of defense. She was on the show being very serious hawking a book about interracial marriage and he was starring at her and telling her how beautiful she was. It was like he had zoned out or something and forgot he was on air. The truth is Cable News likes giving quirky guys like CM shows.

Harassment? Matthews was "harassing" Ingraham? First off, it's up to her to determine that, certainly not you. There is nothing more condescending than for one person to sit there an tell another that they should be offended for something, how utterly arrogant is that?

Men and woman are certainly allowed to compliment each other however one would assume that Matthews would be smart enough to give compliments at the appropriate time. Erin Burnett is there to deliver the business news. How important is it for Chris to tell her on the air that she is attractive?. Could he not tell her off camera? Michelle Obama and Hillary are professional women. Andrea Mitchell explained to Matthews that these women are lawyers from Harvard and Yale, yet he felt their looks were just as important? What year is it again?

Get real Tommy, the problem is Chris Matthews. He is disgusting, especially when he starts droolings while giving those so called "compliments".

I think you do this guy matthews a favor, by merely calling him "sexist". He's delusional. He lives in a delusional world, fed (it seems) by movies. He continuously refers to movies, when trying to describe the things he thinks.

It's movie plots and movie characters and movie actors that appear to make up the doughy substance of chris matthews' brain: he's delusional.

And so in his delusion, he's living variously through the plots and actions of "sexist" movies and "sexist" characters or actors...

Ok, the lesser charge there is of being "sexist". The more serious charge, and the true cause of appearing "sexist", is that the guy is delusional.

chris matthews thinks that because he's on television, he's in a movie of some kind, and that both he and everyone else in the world are charcters in a movie.

That's crazy. The guy is delusional.

He thinks he's in a movie where a woman can't be President of the United States, that only John Wayne or Clint Eastwood or Ronald Reagan or rudy guilianni or some other actor can be president...

chris matthews is delusional, and it's actually a great favor to the guy, to misdiagnose his illness as "sexism".

So what are you trying to say - the guy is delusional? LOL

Give him a little more credit. It’s not all Hollywood – he loves mythical and historical analogies, too. But you are definitely right, he DOES live in his own little world of dreamlike fantasy and nostalgia and is more and more removed from the real world and real people’s problems as the days go by. Yet somehow he still feels he can foresee the future and guide the world to his visions of grandeur past .

Enough already! MMFA is simply trying to divert attention from the real issue this week: Clinton's crazy and racist smears against Obama. MMFA seems to think that if they talk about Matthews loud enough they'll keep people from noticing.

"I hate her. I hate her. All that she stands for."

      From 2001?

And in another topic MMFA actually quotes "Fox Contributer Jane Hall" without the usual "Fox is satanic" qualifier!!!

      ****

Here is the real news - forget the jihad against Matthews. What the Democratic Party really has to worry about is the backlash against the ugly and racist smears made by the Clinton team against Obama -

      Racial Tensions Roil Democratic Race

Comments From Clintons On Obama, MLK Jr., Have Infuriated Some African Americans

A look at the young senator from Illinois who won the first campaign contest in Iowa.

The comments, which ranged from the New York senator appearing to diminish the role of Martin Luther King Jr. in the civil rights movement - an aide later said she misspoke - to Bill Clinton dismissing Sen. Barack Obama’s image in the media as a “fairy tale” - generated outrage on black radio, black blogs and cable television. And now they've drawn the attention of prominent African-American politicians.

“A cross-section of voters are alarmed at the tenor of some of these statements,” said Obama spokeswoman Candice Tolliver, who said that Clinton would have to decide whether she owed anyone an apology.

“There’s a groundswell of reaction to these comments - and not just these latest comments but really a pattern, or a series of comments that we’ve heard for several months,” she said. “Folks are beginning to wonder: Is this really an isolated situation or is there something bigger behind all of this?”

      ===========================================

It's obvious from today's crazy topics at MMFA that you guys are worried that all hell is going to break loose against Hillary. This ugly politics is probably the main reason that Kerry just endorsed Obama today.

MMFA should be ashamed of it's obvious pro-Clinton dramatics this week.

Actually what Bill Clinton said was it's a fairy tale playing in the media that Obama has steadfastly been against the war.

“Second, it is wrong that Senator Obama got to go through 15 debates trumpeting his superior judgment and how he had been against the war in every year, numerating the years, and never got asked one time, not once, ‘Well, how could you say, that when you said in 2004 you didn’t know how you would have voted on the resolution? You said in 2004 there was no difference between you and George Bush on the war and you took that speech you’re now running on off your website in 2004 and there’s no difference in your voting record and Hillary’s ever since?’ Give me a break. “This whole thing is the biggest fairy tale I’ve ever seen…So you can talk about Mark Penn all you want."

        http://www.crooksandliars.com/2008/01/08/bill-clinton-on-obama-big-fairy-tale/

Somehow the media has construed this to mean Clinton said Obama's candidacy is a fairy tale.

Creepy?  Sort of.  Inappropriate?  Yes.  Sexist?  That depends.  Chris Matthews made a similar compliment on John Edwards' looks to his face (an awkward bit of television) a week ago and is constantly giving out the same compliments to Mitt Romney and Giuliani on the air.  The bisexual nature of his blindfire implies either a reflexive earnestness or a broad spectrum of attraction.

Point being, while it doesn't discount the possibility that he's sexist, the lineup presented by Media Matters is hardly proof that he treats one gender differently than the other.
