SUMMARY: On Hardball, Chris Matthews asked Bill Richardson: "What do you make of Hillary Clinton's performance on Saturday night right before the New Hampshire primary, this past Saturday night? There's been a lot of talk about this, the role that we in the media, that I personally played. There's a whole kind of -- all kind of discussion about the boys perhaps tackling the one woman candidate."

During the January 11 edition of MSNBC's Hardball, discussing the January 8 New Hampshire primary with former Democratic presidential candidate Bill Richardson, host Chris Matthews asked: "What do you make of [Sen.] Hillary Clinton's [D-NY] performance on Saturday night right before the New Hampshire primary, this past Saturday night? There's been a lot of talk about this, the role that we in the media, that I personally played. There's a whole kind of -- all kind of discussion about the boys perhaps tackling the one woman candidate."

Richardson replied: "Yes, I do, and I think the incident where she got a little broken up helped her a lot with women voters, and they flocked to her. And that's the kind of person I know her. She's a regular person, and she showed that emotion, and obviously, I believe it helped her." Richardson added: "But yeah, I think women are concerned with guys ganging up on them, and what I tried to do in all the debates -- as you know, Chris -- is to say, "Look, let's stay positive. Both sides, don't throw negative stuff at each other, personal stuff. Let's debate the issues.' "

During MSNBC's January 8 primary coverage, Air America host Rachel Maddow said, "I will tell you that on the influential -- influential perhaps on the left -- website Talking Points Memo today, you want to know who they're blaming for women voters breaking for Hillary Clinton over Barack Obama? Who they're blaming for this late showing in a big vote for Hillary Clinton? They're blaming Chris Matthews. People are citing specifically Chris not only for his own views, but also for as a symbol of what the mainstream media has done to Hillary Clinton." Matthews responded: "My influence in American politics looms over the people. I'm overwhelmed myself." Maddow then said, "People feel that the media is piling on Hillary Clinton. They're coming to her defense with their votes."

As Media Matters for America documented, the next morning on MSNBC's Morning Joe, Matthews said: "Let's not forget -- and I'll be brutal -- the reason she's a U.S. senator, the reason she's a candidate for president, the reason she may be a front-runner is her husband messed around. That's how she got to be senator from New York. We keep forgetting it. She didn't win there on her merits. She won because everybody felt, 'My God, this woman stood up under humiliation,' right? That's what happened."

From the January 11 edition of MSNBC's Hardball with Chris Matthews:

MATTHEWS: What do you make of Hillary Clinton's performance on Saturday night right before the New Hampshire primary, this past Saturday night? There's been a lot of talk about this, the role that we in the media, that I personally played. There's a whole kind of -- all kind of discussion about the boys perhaps tackling the one woman candidate. Did you feel that when John Edwards joined [Barack] Obama in going after Hillary Clinton that he made her the object of some sympathy from women voters, especially older women voters?

RICHARDSON: Yes, I do, and I think the incident where she got a little broken up helped her a lot with women voters, and they flocked to her. And that's the kind of person I know her. She's a regular person, and she showed that emotion, and obviously, I believe it helped her. But yeah, I think women are concerned with guys ganging up on them, and what I tried to do in all the debates -- as you know, Chris -- is to say, "Look, let's stay positive. Both sides, don't throw negative stuff at each other, personal stuff. Let's debate the issues."

I think it's wonderful that Matthews wishes to objectively discuss his subjective behavior. He's able to spew sexist invective ... as the story points out, for YEARS ... and then take the position of an objective observer, asking others how they interpret how "the media" (and mainly himself) has been behaving.

Here's the deal, Chris. Judges routinely RECUSE themselves, when there is a conflict of interest or a bias involved with the person being judged. It's a matter of ETHICS. It's a matter of FULL DISCLOSURE. It's a matter of NOT being a FRAUD, pretending some form of objectivity, when none exists.

And apart from the bias, the overt sexism is just unacceptable. If you cannot help yourself, you have no business with a national microphone.

Nice Tex. I wish we had a mole at MSNBC who could take the last 2 paragraphs of your post and put it up on the teleprompter for Matthews to read at the start of his next Hardball show.

There’s been a lot of content posted here lately that would make Matthews take note of himself. I wish there were a way of assuring it reached his eyes.

O'Reilly referenced Media Matters over a dozen times yesterday. Of course, it was all in terms of MMFA being a "smear" site, etc., but you KNEW BY WATCHING that O'Reilly logs on, and tops out his blood pressure by reading the threads here.

Matthews knows. And, like O'Reilly, he HATES it, but cannot help being drawn here. So do not fear; MMFA's impact is tremendous. These guys can't ignore it ... their egos will not allow it.

I urge everybody to take Matthews off your DVR/TIVO and let MSNBC know you are doing this. Hurt him where it hurts ... his ratings. Let's get rid of this Fascist ... once and for all.

Well, if we can't blame Chrissie, who else is there - other than the entire MSM punditry - to accuse of so alienating the female electorate, that in spite, they come to the polls in droves, to respond " F* U* " to those offenders?

I mean, if we cannot conclusively pin it on LHS and Diebold (which may yet come, thanks to Kucinich and the on-line posting of the breakdown of votes for each candidate versus the count method) Chrissie is titular head of the "Hate Hillary" splinter of the Repugnant/Media alliance.

I am very disappointed and disgusted by Chris Matthews behavior towards Hillary Clinton.  He does not attack anyone else like he does to her.  I have always liked Hillary.  I found her to be extremely bright, thoughtful, and brave in some uncomfortable situations.  She is always professional, composed.  Her chocking up I believe is from fatigue, concern for others, and very sensitive to anyone showing concern for her.  And it got to her.  Bush and the others tear up crocodile tears over the lives of soldiers they sent to their deaths, which I must add they don't give a toot about.  But nobody calls them cry babies.  The sexism displayed repeatedly by Chris and the msm is so blatantly obvious it makes me sick.  I grew up with the crap, denied jobs because I was a woman, etc. and it was all reinstated when the republicans took control.  Most of the time it is covert, but lately it is so obvious even the most jaded American woman should speak up and say knock it off.  After all, we are the majority.
