Monica Crowley compares Clinton to "Glenn Close at the end of Fatal Attraction": "You think she's dead and then she sits bolt-upright in the bathtub"

On the January 13 edition of the syndicated program The McLaughlin Group, while discussing Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton's (D-NY) presidential campaign, host John McLaughlin asked guest, conservative radio host Monica Crowley: "Let's go to the big enchilada, who is, of course, Hillary. What did you think of Hillary's performance?" Crowley responded: "Yes, well, you know, she's like Glenn Close at the end of Fatal Attraction. You think she's dead and then she sits bolt-upright in the bathtub."

In director Adrian Lyne's 1987 film Fatal Attraction, Glenn Close plays Alex Forrest, a woman who begins stalking her co-worker Dan Gallagher and his family following a one-night-stand. In the film's climax, Alex attempts to kill Dan's wife, Beth, with a butcher knife while she's preparing for a bath. Dan hears the attack and wrestles Alex into the bathtub, appearing to have drowned her until Alex suddenly springs from the water, wielding the knife at Dan. Alex is then shot by Beth, who had gone to get a gun Dan bought to protect the family from Alex.

Crowley also stated, referring to a campaign event in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, during which Clinton's voice broke as she talked about why she is seeking the presidency, "Look, I think that both [Newsweek contributing editor] Eleanor [Clift] and [MSNBC contributor] Pat [Buchanan] are correct when they say that the moment was probably authentic on her part, and she certainly leveraged it to her advantage." McLaughlin pressed: "No setup question? ... No counterfeit there at all?" to which Crowley responded: "Well, look, I think she has been told to soften her approach. She's been told to wear softer colors, and I think she saw an opening where she could speak in the softer Jackie Kennedy-esque tones and if an emotional moment came up, grab it -- and she did."

From the January 13 edition of the syndicated program The McLaughlin Group:

McLAUGHLIN: Let's go to the big enchilada, who is, of course, Hillary. What did you think of Hillary's performance?

CROWLEY: Yes, well, you know, she's like Glenn Close at the end of Fatal Attraction. You think she's dead, and then she sits bolt-upright in the bathtub. Look, I think that both Eleanor and Pat are correct when they say that the moment was probably authentic on her part, and she certainly leveraged it to her advantage --

McLAUGHLIN: No setup question?

CROWLEY: -- because -- well --

McLAUGHLIN: No counterfeit there at all?

CROWLEY: Well, look, I think she has been told to soften her approach. She's been told to wear softer colors, and I think she saw an opening where she could speak in the softer Jackie Kennedy-esque tones and if an emotional moment came up, grab it -- and she did. But now, she's turned the race essentially into an X versus Y -- an X chromosome versus a Y chromosome race -- where she is appealing constantly to women. She did again this weekend.

No one. What a joke. What gets me is how pathetic this so-called punditry is... not an iota about the 'message'... only smoke and BS mirrors to hide the fact that the Republicans have absolutely no message.

Is it any surprise that Guilliani is in the toilet...after months and months and months of these same pundits telling us that Mr. 9/11 is on the fast track to the Presidency?

          Greek,

We may not agree on much, but we do with regards to the low level of punditry.

The media can be likened to sharks. They smell blood and the frenzy is on.

I get it now...... how the right-wing corporate media works......

Whomever they hate, it's ok that they are blasted and made fun of or lied about and basically all bets are off by them and theirs.......

If they like said person and you make fun of them, you are a communist or un-American or you hate the troops or simply your hatred of Bush makes your words worthless or have a mental issue or your the childish one......

      Got Projection?

I agree... But, even Republicans aren't buying the MSM-picked candidates... Guilliani is in the crapper (the GOP darling of the MSM). People aren't buying it any more. That makes me somewhat hopeful.

"The GOP darling" like, a month ago. Man, how quickly one falls from grace...but seriously, our corporate media can't remember what they had for breakfast.

I heard an interesting theory on the radio today. Basically, the modern media truncates quotes and, on the whole, knowingly lies so the candidates will have to buy air time to refute the charges. Thus, more money for more lies. Brilliant!

              Greek,

My thought about Guiliani are that the media have been so wrong about every other GOP candidate that they probably have missed this one too. Not that I expect Rudy to win or ever thought he was the favorite, just that he is not buried as deep as the media would have you believe.

My guess is McCain will sink now that NH is behind him like he did before. Romney will come on strong and Rudy will appear out of nowhere to make it a contest. I wouldn't be surprised if the GOP race is open up to the convention. Of course that is only my opinion. :-)

I've seen Crowley in that show. She's the maladjusted one in the corner who utters prepostrous BS as a desperate plea for attention. The others don't seem to take her rants seriously. I hate to say this, but I sure hope they bring Moonie Blankley back.

I thought Blankley hurt the show. He would try to dominate the discussion and his tone, his attitude was tough to take. I'm glad he's gone if he is. Just my two cents.

Think Al Gore 2000 and substitute he for she in the above statement and you'll see Crowley is one of those right wing zombies who rise up every election cycle to make sure the mainstream media has plenty of right wing talking points to choose from.

Hillary was wearing black at the New Hampshire debate and dark gray at her post-primary event ! What "softer colors" ??

Look at what Crowley was wearing in McLaughlin's show, a girly turquoise satin blouse ? The ultimate in professional attire.

      Hey "Flock of Seagulls".

Who is she to talk with her late 80's puffy shoulders and lacy sleeves. The only thing more pitifully out of date than her cultural references is her wardrobe. Yes, I took the shot wait until you hear my "Top Gun" reference montage.
