Gibson misquoted Clinton on civil rights

SUMMARY: John Gibson, purporting to quote Sen. Hillary Clinton verbatim, actually misquoted her comment on the passage of civil rights legislation in the 1960s. Gibson stated: "Clinton is being attacked by [Sen. Barack] Obama for recently saying that the legendary Martin Luther King's dream of equality was one only -- quote, 'only realized when President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act.' " In fact, Clinton did not use the word "only."

On the January 14 edition of Fox News' The Big Story, while introducing a segment on "the issue of race" in the Democratic presidential primary, co-host John Gibson, purporting to quote Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton verbatim, actually misquoted her January 7 comment on the passage of civil rights legislation in the 1960s. Gibson stated: "Clinton is being attacked by [Sen. Barack] Obama [D-IL] for recently saying that the legendary Martin Luther King's dream of equality was one only -- quote, 'only realized when President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act' " [emphasis added]. In fact, Clinton did not use the word "only"; she stated that "Dr. King's dream began to be realized when President Lyndon Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964."

Following is Clinton's full quote, which numerous news outlets have truncated recently:

CLINTON: I would point to the fact that Dr. King's dream began to be realized when President Lyndon Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964, when he was able to get through Congress something that President Kennedy was hopeful to do, the president before had not even tried, but it took a president to get it done. That dream became a reality. The power of that dream became real in people's lives because we had a president who said, "We are going to do it," and actually got it accomplished.

From the January 14 edition of Fox News' The Big Story with John Gibson and Heather Nauert:

GIBSON: Next up is South Carolina, where Clinton and Obama are locked in an increasingly heated battle for black voters. The issue of race has just been pushed into the forefront of their campaigns. Clinton is being attacked by Obama for recently saying that the legendary Martin Luther King's dream of equality was one only -- quote, "only realized when President Lyndon Johnson signed the Civil Rights Act."

I think both Senator Clinton and Senator Obama put this issue rest through statements. Therefore, the beating of the dead horse exposes a partisan point of view, which would negate from their fair and balanced philosophy. Shame, Fox "News."

The problem is that Obama's supporters refuse to let this matter die down. THEY keep talking about it, possibly because the media can't let it go, but in any case it's still a hot anger-filled issue for them and so it really warrants further discussion.

I actually hope it comes up in the debates tonight. It's not fair to the other candidates, but we need to hear Obama and Clinton directly address each other, not via the media.

California NAACP President Alice Huffman endorsed Hillary Clinton today. Atheist

Sorry, Atheist but that's important because...? And IF she makes a statement that's negative against Obama then even though she supports Hillary we should remember that Hillary DIDN'T say it because.....?

            My answers:

It's important because if the woman who of President of the NAACP California chapter supports Hillary that just further proves that Hillary is not a racist.

Let me say first and hopefully finally that I DO NOT believe that Hillary nor Bill are racists, period!. Do I believe that Hillary is playing the "race card"? Yes

Let me also say that IF this woman who is President of the California NAACP makes negative remarks regarding Senator Obama I can only assume that it is because SHE want to paint Obama in a negative light and HELP Hillary. THAT is why surrogates making comments ARE important and should be attributed to the candidate.

      MICKD,

It is and always has been a foregone conclusion that FOX Noise is purely partisan and nothing more than a mouthpiece for the right-wing corporate interests of this country.....

Is it any suprise that Gibson would misrepresent? I don't think so!

Besides..... Anyone on or with FOX complaining about civil rights of blacks is like Dahmer complaining loudly about Hannibal Lecter eating his victims and claiming that its gross!

How frigin hard is it for Gibson & the media in general to quote Hillary Clinton correctly?

Misquoting, interpreting remarks incorrectly, adding or omitting words have caused a firestorm for a week & a half now with the both Bill & Hillary being forced to keep repeating they are not racists.

      Ridiculous turn of events!

Jeter, I put this out in an earlier thread, but I heard an interesting theory yesterday on the radio. Basically, the corporate media continues to truncate quotes and misrepresent candidates so that the candidates have to buy air time in order to effectively refute those statements. It's happening more for the Democrats because they have more money, therefore they have more to spend on ads. (of course, there are other reasons I believe they are doing this too, but that's injecting partisanship into it.)

It's just a theory, and a little on the conspiracy side, but I found it interesting and would like to hear everyone's take on it.

          dbeden,

Nothing shocks me anymore. It's an interesting theory.

Personally I think the media thrives on excitement, which usually means some sort of controversy. And if there isn't a controversy they'll manufacture one or blow up a small incident into something huge. That gets folks to watch TV, ratings go up. Advertisers are happy.

What's really sad is that up till a week or so ago there was little talk of race concerning Obama's candidacy. Thanks to remarks by a number of individuals questioning the meaning of several comments made by either Bill or Hillary Clinton, race is the #1 story. Now the media didn't start it, but they certainly ran with it. And even though both Obama & Clinton have called for a truce, I doubt the media will let it go easily.

It's the same reason local news always includes buildings on fire. Conflict makes for good TV. Good news doesn't sell.

I'm pretty sure the technical problems are still plaguing us.

When reading your post, my browser actually said that "the media thrives on excitement".

Everyone knows it thrives on "excrement".

I agree, Tommy. But the media won't drop it because race-based stories are always a ratings grabber, especially when it's sensationalized and slanted. For what it's worth, I think both Clinton and Obama are guilty for exploiting this just to attain black votes in the South. It's as if both were trying to prove to voters who's more for civil rights than the other. "I'm the direct heir to Martin Luther King, Jr." both seemed to signal to voters. Ridiculous. There's been a lot of mudslinging from both sides, from Jesse Jackson, Jr. suggesting that Clinton's emotional moment was a stunt because she didn't choke-up during the aftermath of Katrina on national tv, to Bob Johnson's coded comments of Barack Obama being a former drug dealer and an "uppity black" that's less-black than Hillary and Bill.

I have my issues with the Clintons, but the way this has been spun is so sickening I decided to not watch the news for awhile. If our press corp is this incompetent to report accurately for the people, then I'll start getting my news from the net.

Well said, when the media hears the word "truce" they go into panic mode and an instant meeting is called to figure out what to fan the flames of next, or at worst, what to manufacture as a media driven story that will have all parties scrambling to explain.

This is far easier than covering issue and policy differences because they are afraid in this ADD mentality of short attention spans, the public will not sit idly for two minutes watching that without grabbing the remote to search for more sensationalism.

And once again, the debate continues - is is our fault, or the medias? When in fact, it's both our faults.

It's fascinating to watch the Corporate Media Bobbleheads decide what is and isn't important. Now that the primaries have started, it's apparent that what little talk there was about the massive corruption and incompetence of the Bush administration is completely off the table. The NeoClowns are to be congratulated. They started their little war on false pretenses, made themselves and their corporate cronies filthy rich, pushed the Executive Branch to near-dictatorial parameters....and they're going to get away with it scot free. Maybe they really are as smart as they think they are...

The issues are and should be what's important in this race. Smear tactics and media nit-picking have no place in decisions of this magnitude.  Glad to see the candidates are beginning to recognize this. www.WhytheDemocratsWillWinIn2008.com

I'd like to sponser a moritorium on the use of the word "truncated." It's not just that I keep thinking there should be an "i" in there somewhere. Incomplete, cut and spun, and my favorite scrunched are a few options.

Like the infamous quote on pornography, I know a scrunched quote when I see one.
