A January 31 New York Times article by reporters Jo Becker and Don Van Natta Jr. claimed that during a September 2005 visit to Kazakhstan, former President Bill Clinton "commend[ed] [Kazakh President] Mr. [Nursultan] Nazarbayev for 'opening up the social and political life of your country.' " Similarly, an article in the February 4 issue of Newsweek by Michael Isikoff and Mark Hosenball claimed that Clinton "praise[d] ... Nazarbayev, an authoritarian ruler with a poor human-rights record, for 'opening up the social and political life of your country.' " However, both the Times and Newsweek versions of Clinton's quote conflict with an Agence France Presse (AFP) article published at the time of Clinton's visit. According to the September 7, 2005, AFP article, Clinton said: "I applaud this statement you have made about opening up the social and political life of your country and [it's] a good point that you made this statement before the election this year" [emphasis added].

From the September 7, 2005, AFP article:

Former US president Bill Clinton on Tuesday hailed Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev's commitment to introduce political and social reforms to the Central Asian nation, during a visit here Tuesday.

"Even when I was in office I made a practice not to interfere with the political activities of other countries, but I do want to say that I applaud this statement you have made about opening up the social and political life of your country and [it's] a good point that you made this statement before the election this year," Clinton said after meeting Nazarbayev.

From Becker and Van Natta's January 31 New York Times article, headlined "After Mining Deal, Financier Donated to Clinton":

Mr. Clinton's Kazakhstan visit, the only one of his post-presidency, appears to have been arranged hastily. The United States Embassy got last-minute notice that the president would be making "a private visit," said a State Department official, who said he was not authorized to speak on the record.

The publicly stated reason for the visit was to announce a Clinton Foundation agreement that enabled the government to buy discounted AIDS drugs. But during a news conference, Mr. Clinton wandered into delicate territory by commending Mr. Nazarbayev for "opening up the social and political life of your country."

From Isikoff and Hosenball's Newsweek article, "Here An F.O.B., There An F.O.B.":

A spokesman for [Canadian entrepreneur who founded Lions Gate Entertainment Frank] Giustra tells NEWSWEEK the two men first became acquainted in January 2005, when Giustra organized a tsunami-relief fund-raiser. He asked the former president to provide a videotaped thank you to the event's contributors. The men became friends. Later that year, Giustra, whose broad business interests include mining, was negotiating a deal to mine uranium in Kazakhstan. In September 2005, Giustra and Clinton flew to Kazakhstan on Giustra's jet. Clinton gave a press conference announcing an AIDS initiative with the Kazakh government. He also took the opportunity to praise the country's president, Nursultan Nazarbayev, an authoritarian ruler with a poor human-rights record, for "opening up the social and political life of your country."

Show it.  Cite it.  It's pretty hard to believe anything that comes out of the mouth of someone who buys every single criminal conspiracy fable about the Clintons that comes flying out of the wingnut side.

Even the NYT can't stomach the criminality of the fat, corrupt rapist anymore. The fat lady's singing now , Bubba. It's time to start thinking about what kind of boyfriend you want in prison:

            OK, I read it.

            Is Giustra a crook?

Clinton was out of office , and had been for a long time.

The donation was made to his philanthropic organization--that he does not profit from.

            How is this criminal?

This is a private citizen with no official standing, traveling when the Presidency and both houses of congress were under the control of his opponents. What influence did hehave to peddle? THe ear of a freshman minority senator (whom he had cheated on?)

What offer could Bill Clinton have made to the government of Kazakhstan? A mention in his next best seller?

AAS far as I can see, the only thing he had to lend Giustra was his celebrity. I have no doubt that Giustra's cred wnt up to be seen with an ex-president, but the Carlyle Group trades on that every day.

A non-criminal--a Canadian non-criminal makes a charitable donation to afoundation founded by a private citizen. Bill Clinton did nothing illegal that I can see here, so perhaps you can explain it to me.

And if you read this site, calling it 'the liberal NYT" doesn't get you very far.

            Nor does 'fat rapist.'

Did my comment include "the liberal NYT"? No? Didn't think so.

Silly attempt at "straw man" there.

Clinton didn't benefit, huh? Have the records as to where the money landed been investigated yet? The low rent hillbilly hasn't been very fothcoming about this.

Why did the low rent hillbilly lie about this and succeeding meetings?

This from the "liberal" NYT article:

Both Mr. Clinton and Mr. Giustra at first denied that any such meeting occurred. Mr. Giustra also denied ever arranging for Kazakh officials to meet with Mr. Clinton. Wednesday, after The Times told them that others said a meeting, in Mr. Clinton’s home, had in fact taken place, both men acknowledged it

Why does the left continue to defend this incredible POS?

Why did the low rent hillbilly lie about this and succeeding meetings?

And "low rent hillbilly" will make it clear your bias and why you can't read this article without putting in stuff that isn't there. "Meetings" should be "meeting"; as in one. Not to mention the meeting did not have anything to do with the uranium deal. The meeting (just one) was about something else and even the article states Clinton refused to help. Go back to how they murdered V Foster and them being drug runners, it is much better fiction.

The money DID NOT go to any charity. It went to a private foundation, which plays be different rules. The fat b*st*rd can pay himself any amount he wishes to direct the foundation. He is getting filthy rich off these shady deals.

He refuses to divulge deatils to the public regarding donors and distributions.

He is complete scum. But becasue he had  "D" after his name, he gets a pass from the left and most of the lying and corrupt MSM.

            Hey, ignorant one...

Has Clinton or this other guy done anything wrong? Anything illegal? No? OK then, move on. If either of them has, I suggest you complain to the local prosecutor, and figure out which laws you think that they broke, and then get them charged with, well, something, and then you can go from there.

It's OK, breath a little, and let it go. As with Whitewater, and other things the Clinton's were accused of, and then never had any evidence to be found guilty of, in your mind, they got a lot of money from something so they must be doing something illegal. Never mind the money went to Clinton's philanthropic organization, and don't forget about the billions of dollars Buffet and Gates dropped in there as well. They must want something as well. Right?

nbc news repeated this misrepresentation also tonight.  they had clinton praising naserbayev, when clearly that was not what clinton did.  he applauded a statement that naserbayev made about opening up the social and political life of his country and clinton said that it was good that he did it before the upcoming elections.  clinton is urging him to keep his promise to do that, not praising him as already having done it.  another cropped quote and another lie.

See, this is what I don't get. Did anyone do anything illegal? Wasn't Bill Clinton, at that time and currently, a private citizen of the United States? Isn't he allowed, within the frame of the law, to do whatever he feels prudent as far as business goes, and or whatever else he wants to do with his life? What's the story? What's the big hullabaloo?

This isn't even worth comparing it to anything else that Bush and Company have done, because this was apparently legal, and from the article, they're trying to make it look like some nefarious plot, or something like that. Hey, guess what? A former President does indeed hold a lot of sway (no matter how good or bad they were when in office) around the world for a number of reasons.

      So what?

Stranger, go read something about Whitewater. If you're actually saying that there's something there, the attack dog Ken Starr (appointed by the Clinton administration) would have found that, since they dug, dug some more, and even when they didn't find anything kept digging and came up with dalliance. Please... Re-open Whitewater? What the hell is this? 1994?

Even the most incurious observer realizes that the low-rent hillbillies should be in jail.

Hill-Billy are so g-damned crooked it's amazing. They illegally used their positions..she as a lawyer and he as governor...to try to profit from a shady land deal designd to rip people off.

they were able to stonewall the investigation by paying people off to be silent...Susan McDougal...or killing them...Vince Foster...or by hiding the records unti the special prosecuter's time was up...the Rose Law Firm records that went missing ...

..yet the left continues to defend the white trach scum bags
