SUMMARY: Joe Scarborough stated on the February 1 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe: "Media Matters actually gets very agitated when we call [former New York City Mayor] Rudy Giuliani 'America's Mayor.' In fact, they did a whole post on us calling Rudy 'America's Mayor,' so we decided to call him 'America's Mayor' about 48 times."

On the February 1 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe, host Joe Scarborough referred to former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani as "America's Mayor" and later asserted: "Media Matters actually gets very agitated when we call Rudy Giuliani 'America's Mayor.' In fact, they did a whole post on us calling Rudy 'America's Mayor.' " Scarborough continued: "[S]o we decided to call him 'America's Mayor' about 48 times" on the January 31 edition of Morning Joe.

Media Matters for America noted that Scarborough referred to Giuliani as America's Mayor on both the January 29 and January 30 editions of Morning Joe. Since the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001, media figures have repeatedly used the label "America's Mayor" when referring to Giuliani, despite criticism over his actions before and after the attacks. Media Matters recently released a video compilation documenting Fox News anchors, correspondents, and contributors repeatedly referring to Giuliani as "America's Mayor."

Earlier in the broadcast, during the "News You Can't Use" segment of the program, co-host Willie Geist reported on Buddy, a dog that reportedly ate his owner's Super Bowl tickets, and said: "The man has now, though, been told -- we can report -- that he can replace the tickets. So Buddy will no longer have to watch the Super Bowl at Michael Vick's place." After the segment, Scarborough asked Geist if he would "apologize now ... [j]ust say the Michael Vick thing was a joke so PETA [People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals] doesn't come and ... try to get us all." Scarborough later added, "[W]ho does that? Media Matters or Dogs Matter ... or who attacks you?"

From the February 1 edition of MSNBC's Morning Joe:

GEIST: In other animal-related Super Bowl news, a dog named Buddy in some trouble in Arizona this morning because he ate a pair of his owner's $900 Super Bowl tickets. A courier slipped a package containing the tickets under the door -- the dog thought it was a treat. Buddy's owner came home to find only a few tiny pieces of those tickets remaining.

SCARBOROUGH: Oh, my God.

GEIST: The man has now, though, been told -- we can report -- that he can replace the tickets. So Buddy will no longer have to watch the Super Bowl at Michael Vick's place.

MIKA BRZEZINSKI (co-host): Ohh, stop it, Willie. That's terrible.

GEIST: I think it's important to point out -- important.

BRZEZINSKI: That's not good.

GEIST: Finally --

BRZEZINSKI: He didn't do that.

[...]

SCARBOROUGH: Willie, will you apologize now? Just say the Michael Vick thing was a joke so PETA doesn't come and --

BRZEZINSKI: Yeah.

SCARBOROUGH: -- try to get us all.

BRZEZINSKI: You didn't mean that.

GEIST: Yeah, it's was terrible. I feel terrible.

SCARBOROUGH: What's that?

BRZEZINSKI: Apologize now.

GEIST: I feel terrible.

BRZEZINSKI: Yeah.

SCARBOROUGH: OK. Willie's apologized.

GEIST: Yeah.

BRZEZINSKI: Thank you, Willie.

SCARBOROUGH: So, who does that? Media Matters or Dogs Matter --

GEIST: No, actually --

SCARBOROUGH: -- or who attacks you?

GEIST: -- I don't apologize.

SCARBOROUGH: You don't?

GEIST: No.

SCARBOROUGH: You don't apologize?

GEIST: Not in the least.

SCARBOROUGH: All right, you may be the one --

GEIST: Wonderful.

SCARBOROUGH: You may be the one watching the Super Bowl with Michael Vick.

[...]

JAY LENO (Tonight Show host) [video clip]: You guys are on opposite sides again! Why that, that lasted --

BRZEZINSKI: That looked like fun.

SCARBOROUGH: Willie, that was America's Mayor.

GIEST: That was -- uh, you know what?

SCARBOROUGH: By the way, I need to clean that up.

BRZEZINSKI: Yeah.

SCARBOROUGH: You know why? Because I actually had some Rudy people thinking I was making fun of Rudy Giuliani.

GEIST: Oh, no, no, no.

BRZEZINSKI: No, you weren't.

SCARBOROUGH: Not at all. Media Matters actually gets very agitated when we call Rudy Giuliani "America's Mayor." In fact, they did a whole post on us calling Rudy "America's Mayor," so we decided to call him "America's Mayor" about 48 times.

GEIST: Yeah.

BRZEZINSKI: OK, so that was the big thing.

GEIST: You know what? Our --

SCARBOROUGH: Because if that really is all they have to worry about, then they really don't have a whole lot of stuff to talk about. I'm sure the donors are glad they're worried about that.

Why oh why do we pay any attention to dorks like this.  Remember he is a has been Republican Representative.  Who cares what he thinks?  Oh well, it is probably better to have him openly biased so we can call him down on it.  However, he makes no claim to professional journalism in his show.  But his bias is so obvious it is sort of silly to have to listen to him so we can call him on his bias.  Pure torture.

No it doesn't.  It gives the impression that there's disagreement with and criticism of Scarborough.

The only people who would think this is anywhere close to the problem with what Imus said are those who can't distinguish between degrees, such as problematic and outrageous.

I disagree, the Imus comment was by far the worst thing said on TV/Radio in 2007. The use of "Americas Mayor" is no where near that hateful thing Imus said last April.

What is the truth? The guy is a failure, he can be called "Americas Mayor " until hell freezes over but Rudy would never be elected, because no one in this country cares. They also do not care what Joe the phony Scarborough says. It can be noted all we want, it makes no difference.

Rudy doesn't deserve the title of America's Mayor, but the media dubbed him that, & they don't appear to be backing off from using it.

Trust me, Rudy's obit will also include 'Known as America's Mayor'

Seriously though, I don't think we are expressing any "hate" for either of the two here - it's the silly labels that we hate!

"America's Mayor"? Hell, even most New Yorkers can't stand him. I'm pretty sure most of Americans wouldn't even want him as dog catcher - and then only if he wore an ankle collar for tracking his every move.

Hardly. I would accept the far left designation for myself. Perhaps a few others, for the most part what you have here are mainstream liberals. The rightwing has been trying for a couple of decades to move the frame to the right by designating anyone two degrees left of center as far left and the most committed far right ideologue as center right. Its a neat trick but we arent dumb enough to fall for it.

Here's a question for people who love the nicknames given by the press for these two guys:

How did they earn them?  Despite recent pandering my McCain, how is he still a Maverick?

        How is Rudy America's Mayor?

Name one Democratic politician who has garnered such kid glove treatment from the press and a favorable nickname which is used every time he or she is brought up.

Or think if Hillary Clinton dubbed her campaign bus "The Straight Talk Express." There would be nightly analysis, parsing every last syllable she uttered, until the media could disprove it.

            MickD,

Good point. I hope one of these posters who likes the nicknames can answer my query.

Snoopy, thanks for the link (and, again, thanks for putting it in a new window), I hadn't seen this, only heard it second-hand. I assumed she said it very sarcastically, and couldn't understand why people seemed to be actually questioning if she was sincere.

Now I get it. She was going totally deadpan, going for satire like Hannity did on his radio show the other day, as he pretended to be abandoning his principles and softening up to McCain.

Here's the problem with these Johnathan Not-too-Swifts; Satire is not very effective when the absurd position you're adopting satirically is objectively much more rational than your usual genuine opinions.

No wonder their fans are confused. It's even confusing to the non-retarded.

So I hate to post this, cuz there are currently 48 posts for Scarborough's 48 "America's Mayor" quips, but the tension is too much.

Doesn't this just seem a bit childish?  Okay, not a bit, a lot.

There's a serious issue at work. The media's coverage of Hillary vs their coverage of McCain and Rudy. How would Scarborough feel if Fox News referred to Hillary as "America's Senator" everyday? Would it be a big joke then? Don't hold your breath waiting for his battered wife Mika to point this out.

Yes, exactly right. For the question to make more sense, let's pretend that CNN called Clinton America's senator. There would be no end of right-wing wailing about media bias, and Scarborough would join in. The main stream media frames the debate, and frames the candidates, which they should not do. Watch as we hear the media refer to McCain as a maverick. There should be a drinking game when there is a news item or a debate involving McCain. Every time the word maverick is used, someone should have to take a drink.

And he's actually playing it off with "I'm just saying it to bug you", the crap that most people outgrow when they're about 6.Like saying "Democrat party" or the dittoheads who call Rush to brag that they're doing unnecessary driving, leaving all of the lights on, and using large amounts of toilet paper.

My apologies to brighter 6 year olds everywhere.

Col., You may recall back during a past Dem nomination convention, Pres. Clinton was going to speak at a certain time. This was during the rolling blackouts and energy crisis in California. Mr. Limbaugh was on the air laughing and asking all of his listeners to turn ON every electrical appliance they had so that a blackout would occur during Clintons' speech.. The jerk laughed about it. But, the jerk did not realize that hospitals would lose power, communications would go out, no traffic signals, etc.etc.etc.(nor did he care).  The jerk was never pulled on the carpet for it. I guess he was just joking...WITH OTHER PEOPLES' LIVES. The jerk is in it for the money and hasn't a shred of decency. This is why he has earned the scorn of those that realize what he really is...NOTHING.

P.S. Isn't it uplifting to see/hear the 25% who have had their way for the past 8 years cry and cry and cry because the REAL Republicans have come out from the fog and have spoken out for themselves. The Radio cystjockeys are worried about their JOBS...F**K 'em they don't care about anyone else.

Hey, POW. I don't think I was aware of El Rushbo back then, but that's interesting. Sort of what I was getting at, rebellion for conformists, taking decisive action towards the status quo.

Amazing, the amount of energy the 30%s are willing to spend continuing to "defiantly" contribute to a  problem, while any suggestion that they work toward a solution brings on the vapors and calls for a fresh adult diaper.

Take some responsibility for my actions? That's a threat to my freedom & reeks of government control!

What's that Rush? Turn on all of my lights? Yessssss, Master!

Perhaps the pot callin the kettle black? Most people outgrow getting hysterically upset over dumb nicknames when they reach 6 as well. But then the lefties vigilantly remind us that there are exceptions . .

Another one bites the dust, so to speak.
