Schlussel displayed candy hearts on her website for Obama and Clinton, including "obama & islam forever!" and "Pimp My Chelsea"

February 13, 2008 12:16 pm ET

SUMMARY: In an entry on her website, Debbie Schlussel posted "Valentines," in the form of candy hearts, about Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton. The hearts for Obama were black instead of the usual pastel colors and referenced widely debunked allegations that Obama is, or has been, a Muslim. A number of the candy hearts Schlussel posted for Clinton referenced David Shuster's remark, "But doesn't it seem like Chelsea's sort of being pimped out in some weird sort of way?"

In a February 12 entry on her website, debbieschlussel.com, right-wing pundit Debbie Schlussel posted "Valentines," in the form of candy hearts, about Democratic presidential candidates Barack Obama and Hillary Rodham Clinton. The hearts for Obama were black instead of the usual pastel colors and referenced widely debunked allegations that Obama is, or has been, a Muslim; Schlussel also posted one black candy heart for Clinton. A number of the other candy hearts Schlussel posted for Clinton referenced MSNBC correspondent David Shuster's February 7 remark about Chelsea Clinton's work for her mother's campaign: "But doesn't it seem like Chelsea's sort of being pimped out in some weird sort of way?" Shuster subsequently apologized and has been suspended by MSNBC for the comments.

All of the candy hearts Schlussel displayed for Obama were black, including some with the following messages: "White House mosque," "obama & islam forever!" "islam hearts obama," and "barack HUSSEIN obama." Schlussel included one black candy heart that read, "cankles 4 prez," and posted a purple-colored candy heart that read, "hillary rodham cankles '08." Schlussel wrote of the black hearts, "[T]he black hearts are goth and are considered signs of hate, not love." Schlussel has highlighted Obama's middle name before, asking if "Barack Hussein Obama" is "a man we want as President when we are fighting the war of our lives against Islam? Where will his loyalties be?"

In addition to the "cankles" hearts, for Clinton, Schlussel displayed candy hearts that read "Pimp My Chelsea," "chelsea = pimped," and "Bill 4 First Pimp," referring to Shuster's remark about Chelsea Clinton. Schlussel also posted a heart for Hillary Clinton that read: "The Bitch is BAAACK '08."

Schlussel's bio on her website describes her as a columnist and a radio talk-show host, and as Media Matters for America has documented, she has also appeared as a commentator on MSNBC. Schlussel recently appeared on the January 17 edition of Fox News' Fox & Friends to talk about the indictment of her former boss, former Rep. Mark Siljander (R-MI), in connection with funding of charities accused of sponsoring Islamic terrorism. During that segment, she was introduced as an "attorney and journalist."

I think Schlussel used to be considered a semi-serious pundit. This crap is too stoopid to even be offensive on a personal level, it's only offensive for its affront to comedy.

I wouldn't mind if the GOPpers would try to make a joke about something that really exists. Watch Jon Stewart, he's able to find all sorts of stuff with which to crack wise on the Dems.Conservatives are just astoundingly lazy, but I guess that's sort of stating the obvious. What other trait but sloth makes people terrified of anything but the Status Quo?

Middle, I didn't say I thought any of the stuff was OK, just that it's too fantasy-based to be offensive on any personal level. In order to do that, Schlussel would have to touch some sort of nerve, which would involve basing something in reality.

I understood your claim but don't share your confidence.  Are you a women, a muslim, or a relative or supporter of Clinton or Obama?    Don't assume that you know what is offensive to others.

OK, I get your point middle. Wasn't trying to tell anybody else what should offend them. I only meant that, while these things are deliberately offensive, and are offensive in that there is an audience that they're directed at that gives them some credibility, I just meant that they are such stupid attempts at offensiveness that the stupidity is more offensive than the offensiveness.

I'm going to quit trying to explain what I meant. ;0)

Except to say that this is like a lot of righty humor- it's like, if you're in really good shape, and somebody gets mad and calls you fatso. They got nothing, no comeback required.

On a side note why does anyone give a sh*t about her opinions on movies?

      Headline:

Schussel attempts relevancy as she tires to inherit Queen of Mean status from Coulter:

Pundit Debbie Schussel posted candy hearts on her website that only the simplest of minds would find amusing or honest.  Among the accusations on said conversation hearts was an accusation that Hillary Clinton has "cankles."  Schussel, who has not appeared in any pictures that might suggest that she has a similar "affliction" had this to say:

"If we elect a woman with Cankles, the terrorists win," Schussel said while still not exposing her own ankles for signs of possible canklification, "we can't let them have that victory!"

Schussel would not comment on former senator Mark Siljander's terror ties saying only: "He was mean to those bad guys and the coolest guy ever!"

When pressed about her hearts linking Obama to Islam, she said:

"Look at his name.  He HAS to be a Muslim and a terroris!  After all, he is related to Saddam Hussein who had something to do with 9/11."

The author of this article then proceeded to throw up and left the vile pundit immediately.

My argument is that Islam is such a wonderful, loving, peaceful religion that it loves everyone.  Therefore "Islam hearts Obama" is a factually true statement.  It is NOT a lie.

"I have to tell you, you know, it's part of reporting this case, this election, the feeling most people get when they hear Barack Obama's speech. My, I felt this thrill going up my leg. I mean, I don't have that too often. No, seriously. It's a dramatic event. He speaks about America in a way that has nothing to do with politics. It has to do with the feeling we have about our country. And that is an objective assessment."--Chris Matthews

A thrill going up his leg? Ah ain't that nice? Gee folks who do you think Chrissie has got a crush on now? I'm just happy he didn't tell us where that thrill ended ;-)

            Hey I just figured I'd add a Heart ;-)

Wrong thread? There is no right thread LOL...And since it's doubtful MMFA will object to Matthews gushing over Obama & include a thread I figured I'd just stick it here in the hearts & love thread.

Won't be the first time someone went a tad off topic here :-) But your objection is duly noted.

              Jeter,

When are you going to learn?  Off topic derailments are perfectly fine if they bash conservatives, however your example of a media person fawning over Obama is NOT an example of that, therefore you will be called on it.

How many more times do we have to have this conversation?

              ;)

                  Wow!  Talk about gushing:

ATLANTA (AP) -- Chauncey Billups missed every shot he tried through the first three quarters. Not to worry. The fourth is his time. Living up to the nickname "Mr. Big Shot," Billups scored 12 of his 16 points in the final period to rally the Detroit Pistons to their ninth win in a row, 94-90 over the Atlanta Hawks on Tuesday night.

So I'm sorry to be the one to tell you but my example has far more relevance here at a political site, as does my joke than does your sports example which actually has zero relevance.

            Hey LostLogic,

I bet when he got home his wife might have had something to say about it! Plus he's got grown kids, how humiliating to have your father sound like such a nitwit on national TV.

I couldn't believe what I was hearing & my wife said "I think Chris has finally lost his mind"

The crew on Morning Joe really needled him about it this morning when he was on as a guest & he looked really embarrassed so I'm hoping maybe that was finally the tipping point. He did seem a tad more subdued [well for him] tonight on Hardball so there might be hope for him yet ;-)

Actually, I think this form of conservative "joke", much like the rest of their "humor", is a finger in the eye, a way of saying "nyah! so there!". Conservatives just revel in their ability to say childish things that no one else can stop them from saying. It doesn't rely on any form of timing, wit or truth.

You do know that Matthews actually said that don't you? No joke. It's all over the media. Except here of course ;-)

I was watching last night when he said it ,I thought Olbermann & the others were gonna crawl under the desk.

No, I didn't know that. I don't regularly watch Matthews, and I haven't watched any TV in the past 24 hours. It doesn't surprise me that someone else would come to the same conclusion, though. It just seems kind of intuitive.

Matthews said this last night during the primary election coverage. I thought Olberman was gonna crawl under the desk. They were making fun of Matthews on Morning Joe, I mean the guy is known for his man-crushes, but you gotta admit this was over the top, even for him. A thrill up his leg? Okie dokie.
