Cunningham smeared Obama, used his middle name during appearance at McCain rally

February 26, 2008 2:52 pm ET

SUMMARY: The MSNBC.com blog First Read reported that conservative radio host Bill Cunningham "repeatedly referred to [Sen. Barack] Obama as Barack Hussein Obama -- at least three times." Cunningham has a history of smearing Obama and referring to him as "Barack Hussein Obama," doing so on Hannity's America and his own nationally syndicated show.

During a February 26 rally for Sen. John McCain, conservative radio talk-show host Bill Cunningham "repeatedly referred to [Sen. Barack] Obama as Barack Hussein Obama -- at least three times," according to a post on the MSNBC.com blog First Read. In an update to the post, First Read reported that "McCain addressed the issue, saying he repudiated the comments and has respect for his Democratic opponents," and that "McCain accepted responsibility for the speaker while also saying he had not been in the room and had not heard the comments himself."

This is not the first time Cunningham has smeared Obama and referred to him as "Barack Hussein Obama." Discussing the Democratic presidential primaries during the January 27 edition of Fox News' Hannity's America, Cunningham said to host Sean Hannity: "I've had a couple individuals tell me that after the so-called 'white voters' in Iowa and New Hampshire weighed in heavily, especially in Iowa, for Barack Hussein Obama and then in New Hampshire, Hillary kind of made a little bit of a comeback. There has been a conscious effort by Bubba Clinton to smear and to slime Barack Hussein Obama on the race issue." Cunningham also asserted: "Barack may win, but he's been slimed by Bubba, and there's nothing he can do about it. The Clintons know what they are doing, and I'm afraid Barack Hussein Obama does not."

Additionally, on the January 6 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Live on Sunday Night, It's Bill Cunningham, Cunningham repeatedly referred to Obama as "Barack Mohammed Hussein Obama." In fact, "Mohammed" is not a part of Obama's name. Cunningham also falsely claimed that Obama "was raised in madrassas in Indonesia" and accused Obama's church, Trinity United Church of Christ in Chicago, of being "black separatist" and "black racist." When a caller said, "[I]n my opinion, not the opinion of this show, in my opinion, Obama is a sleeper cell because his parents are Muslim," Cunningham responded, "Only one [parent]." While Cunningham did not respond to the caller's "sleeper cell" charge, earlier in the broadcast, he had asserted that "it would be a shock" "if Barack Mohammed Hussein Obama can be elected the president of this country in these difficult terrorist times." Cunningham also said during the broadcast: "I wonder if Barack Hussein Obama understands the danger inflicted upon the world by Muslim male extremists."

Tough trick to fight against? Honey, this is one fight that is already over. When wading through the mass of political commentary that is currently around, it is not the arguments that are critical, it is the tone.  Listen for the beat.  And that tone/beat is dismissive of this tactic. Its obvious, its purile and thus leaves a bad taste in the mouth for its invoker, not its target.  Its appeal is limited to those already rabid in their rejection of Obama, and therefore can have no significant impact.  What is interesting is how revealing it is of the self-worshipping, narcissistic  attitudes of the far right.  Their hubris.  The O'Reillys/Coulters/Hannittys/Limbaughs and yes Cunninghams of the media world have overestimated their individual power.  The environment was right for their past mud-slinging and character assassinations, yet they believed the credit was solely theirs.  This message should have come home to them when their pet Romney was so roundly dismissed.  Yet they persist, finding it difficult to find new footing on a shifting landscape.  In a changing environment.  Seemingly, no they can't. One word - Landslide.

Who the hell cares about these people? Look, if anyone who is thinking of voting for Barrack doesn’t already know that his middle name is “Hussein” they shouldn’t vote for him – and the idiots who make something of it would never vote for him anyhow. The more MMFA and any media outlet makes of someone using Obama's middle name – the more ridiculous the whole “issue” becomes – and the more the wingnuts revel in the fact that they got a feather rise out of us. LEAVE IT BE ALREADY! WHO CARES? Quit fueling their fire.

I think you may not appreciate the power of Right Wing Troglodyte Talk Radio. The more they hammer home their bogus message that Obama is a "Mooslim" in disguise...the more afraid their idiot audience will be. Why does this matter? It matters because a lot of rank & file Evangelical Troglodytes don't support John McCain, because the Talk Radio Liars have conditioned them that way. As a result, there's a risk that they'll stay home in protest. Well, despite the best efforts of Rush Limbaugh and Sean Hannity, the moderates of the party have nominated John McCain. Now they have to reprogram their listeners so that they'll be too afraid to stay home on election day. In an effort to salvage what little credibility they have left, the Talk Radio Liars can't endorse McCain right away... so they have to vilify Obama the way they have vilified Hillary for the past 15 years.

          See how simple that is?

It's too simple - Maybe that's why I'd just as soon pretend these people don't even exist - and concentrate of winning the vote of people who actually have their own minds. I see your point though - but I think it's just one of those unpleasantnesses of life that I have no control of and block to protect my sanity.

It seems funny to say that using a candidate's middle name is a smear. It is his middle name. But obviously it's the reason's for repeating it that make it a smear. Very, very petty and immature on the part of the right wing.

At first I thought that McCain should be given credit for repudiating Cunningham's remarks. But did McCain's campaign have no idea that Cunningham would make incindiary comments? That's like having Andrew Dice Clay perform and then complaining that he was vulgar. Come on... And what do McCain's comments that it won't happen again mean, that Cunningham won't be the warm up act again? Regardless, the damage has been done and it's hard to believe the McCain campaign had no idea that Cunningham would be offensive.

If folks are turned off by his full name they probably weren't gonna vote for him anyway.

McCain needs to realize that you can never please liberals or compromise with them. If you give them an inch they'll take a mile. I don't get the "smearing" part. Obama's middle name is Hussein. McCain's is Sidney. The only impact either of those names will have on Americans is the inability of some to focus on anything of substance.

For instance, I could say John McCain was subjected to torture while a POW during Vietnam. In order to stop the torture he gave the names of offensive linemen on the Green Bay Packers instead of the names of other aviators in his squadron. So it's confusing to me why he would support torture now when he knows from personal experience that it's ineffective and unreliable.

Or, I could keep saying, "Look how big his left jaw is!" as if it had some effect on his policies or actions.

According to his Wikipedia page, Bill Cunningham and rqcist remarks go hand-in-hand.:

In 2001, shortly after race-related riots over the police killing of an African-American teenager who was fleeing their pursuit, Federal Sixth Circuit Court of Appeals Judge Nathaniel Jones blasted Cunningham in a speech at a local YMCA, calling the show “trash, and filth and profanity.” (Jones is a former civil rights lawyer who worked for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People; Cunningham has been a frequent critic of the organization and civil rights activists in general, particularly Rev. Jesse Jackson, who Cunningham nicknames the "Rhyming Reverend.")

In December 2003, Cunningham drew more fire for making fun of Nathaniel Jones (no relation to the federal judge), an African-American resident of Cincinnati who died after violently resisting police outside a White Castle restaurant; video of the incident again inflamed the local African-American community. Jones, who weighed more than 350 lb. (159 kg), was found to have died of an enlarged heart, and various narcotics were found to be present in his body while violently resisting arrest at the time of his death, which may have contributed to his reaction to police efforts to subdue him. Cunningham made fun of Jones' obesity and apparent drug use in a skit on his show, which prompted various local civil rights groups to call for his resignation or firing.

Cunningham is a buffoonish lawyer/talk show host & typical Clear Channel right-winger that no one of good character takes seriously. He has had an ongoing rift with the minority community of Cincinnati because of his inability to camouflage his inherent racism. It's on the record. Bill doesn't particularly care for his African-American brethren. Just ask any black leader (or citizen) in the city.

It is instructive to know the approach the McCain people (his denouncements notwithstanding) are going to take in the general election. "Gosh, gee whiz, I didn't know that race-baiter was going to race-bait." John McCain, circa 2/26/08.

Consider the source. During the Vietnam era, Bill "The Coward" Cunningham hid in Canada. Claimed he had a medical problem (Anal polyps). So maybe Canadas' health care system is better than ours.

Now, Bill "The Warrior", is all for your kids dying for the Bush/Cheney mideast fiasco, for all the jobs lost here in Ohio and the rest of the nation, for the bankruptcies, the foreclosures, lack of affordable health care, the corruption of the past seven years. And it goes on and on.

Fascinating. Has anyone yet realized that saying Baracks middle name is not an issue? his middle name is a reflection of his muslim heritage in that it was probably the name of one of his ancestors. Why is it that we can say Hillary Rodham Clinton, but not Barack Hussein Obama?? Just for this attempt to control what i say because of posssible inuendo I will hereby refer to Obama as hussein

"repeatedly referred to [Sen. Barack] Obama as Barack Hussein Obama -- at least three times,"

Mein Gott!!! 3 whole times?? The gall of that man.

This is not the first time Cunningham has smeared Obama and referred to him as "Barack Hussein Obama."

      Calling him by his full title is NOT a smear. Smear is defined as;

to sully, vilify, or soil (a reputation, good name, etc.).

If his middle name vilifies him in your eyes, then you are naturally a bigoted racist who hates muslims. His muslim heritage is something he should be proud of, right? Why then would it "soil" his good name??

Why is it that we can say Hillary Rodham Clinton, but not Barack Hussein Obama?

This has been explained before.  RODHAM IS NOT HER MIDDLE NAME.  Her middle name is Diane.

Among all of the candidates from very early in this race, Obama is the ONLY one whose middle name is commonly used.  Anyone who claims its routine usage is not done with ulterior motives is either ignorant or a liar.

        Which are you?

Billy, it was my mistake, i was uninformed as to Clinton's true middle name.

Ulterior motives or not, it is his middle name and we should not attempt to denounce the right of others to say it.

Frankly, my mild irritation at the petty, narrow-mindedness of the constant use of Obama's middle name has subsided.  If he gets the nomination I say let them go for it.  It's like overexposure to anything that's supposed to be shocking; the receiver becomes inured to it after a while.

There is a small core group who will find significance in it, and they aren't the sort who are likely to vote for Obama anyway.  There's another group who would have a negative reaction to Hussein initially, but will be able to see past it after a short while.  I'd very much like to believe that the majority will recognize that his middle name is meaningless.

Is this just wishful thinking on my part?

His middle name IS meaningless. It should not be taboo to utter a totally inconsequential part of a mans name.

Nah, lets talk about what a moron you are. I am interested. Did you WORK at becoming this stupid or is it a natural gift? Are there stupid classes or stupid pills that you take to enhance your native ignorance or are you really this talented at showing how incredibly stupid you are? Inquiring minds want to know.
