In recent weeks, as Media Matters for America has repeatedly noted, various media outlets have either falsely suggested or asserted outright that Sen. John McCain has avoided references to his time in Vietnam in his prior political campaigns. In fact, McCain repeatedly highlighted his service in Vietnam during his failed 2000 presidential bid, as numerous news reports from the time show. Indeed, McCain's own 2000 presidential campaign released a biographical video of McCain, which prominently features McCain's time in the Navy during Vietnam. McCain himself appears in the video and discusses, among other things, the "[t]hree keys to a successful survivor in a prison camp, a situation such as I and my friends were in." Moreover, in 2004, McCain reportedly said that he had advised Sen. John Kerry (D-MA) not to talk about his military service and falsely claimed that "I didn't talk about" Vietnam because, he said, "I didn't need to."

The video, which also covers McCain's family military history, goes on to discuss McCain's release from the prison camp, his return to the U.S. from Vietnam, and the remainder of his Navy career. At the end of the video, a disclaimer notes that the advertisement was "Paid for by McCain 2000, Inc."

Here's an April Fool's joke for you.  I'm watching Larry King right now and my distinguished (LOL) former Governor Jesse Ventura is the guest.  There's your April Fools joke, and the joke was on Minnesota from 1998-2002.

I want to really thank MMFA for nailing this one.  Well done.

Imagine McCain trying to "hype" that silly "Vietnam service - POW" thing for political purposes.

No thank YOU for showing us how ignorant you are. Did MMFA criticise McCain for talking about Vietnam? Why no they DIDNT. Did they criticise people who lie about whether or not he TALKS about Vietnam? Why yes they did. Are you to stupid to know the difference? Apparantly you are.

topic title says: "2000 campaign video shows McCain hyping time in Vietnam"

solon says: "Did MMFA criticise McCain for talking about Vietnam? Why no they DIDNT."

             What does HYPING mean?

          From Dictionary.com

Definitions: ....Something deliberately misleading; a deception ...exaggerated publicity; hoopla. ...a swindle, deception, or trick.

Does solon actually know what words mean?  Why no - no he does not.

"shows McCain hyping time in Vietnam, despite his -- and media's -- false claims to the contrary"

maybe you should have read the rest of the title, Solon had it dead on. It's about the lie, not his military service.

By using the deliberately insulting term "hyping" MMFA was, in fact, demeaning and insulting McCain's service in Vietnam.

I think that you are smart enough to know this.  But as a test, find a single instance where MMFA refers to Kerry "hyping" his Vietnam record and I will admit that I am wrong.

              Go Obama!!

1.to stimulate, excite, or agitate (usually fol. by up): She was hyped up at the thought of owning her own car. 2.to create interest in by flamboyant or dramatic methods; promote or publicize showily: a promoter who knows how to hype a prizefight.

That's a couple of Webster's definitions for Hype, it's not always a negative connotation. Thanks for playing.

If you cannot see the obvious negative connotation to the word "hype" or "hyping", then logic simply fails for you.

Again, simply provide a time when MMFA refers to Kerry "hyping" his service in Vietnam in a positive light then I'll admit error.

              Actinglikeatypicalliberal,

Your are right on with your comments about hype or not hyping enough.  Who cares about the truth!  This is just like Charlie Rose (the traitorous wretch!) 'falsely asserting' something about McCain on Monday that had to potential to make the Senator seem sensible and appealing.  And that kind of corporate-facist-right-winged nonsense has no right to appear next to the wholesome goodness in the wonderful work here at MM(vl).  Touche'

Hyping is what candidates do. If he werent hyping his record he wouldnt be running. Carter once said when talking about exactly this that in South Georgia when you want to sell a mule you call it a horse. Try to change the focus of the topic all you want. He DOES and HAS talked about his Vietnam experiences. Good for him. I think he ought to they are a plus for him. The press needs to stop pretending he doesnt. Even someone as ignorant as you ought to be able to understand this.

Why yes he does. Apparantly YOU dont. I would have dredged up the definitions that apply here but Dazed already did that. Do YOU have any reading comprehension? Why no you dont. I made a good point. MMFA using an appropriate word that you want to PRETEND has only ONE definition and only ONE way to interpret it takes away from that point in NO WAY. Thanks for playing if you have an ACTUAL point get back to us.

McCain is going to be hard to beat in November. Not because of his brilliant political acumen; not because of his sparkling personality; not because of his policies....but because he has the Mainstream Media in the tank for him, not to mention the Wingnut GOP propagandists who SWORE, just a few months ago, that they could never support him...out of "principle" (now, that's hilarious).

Meanwhile, the allegedly "Liberal Media" will eviscerate Obama for not being able to bowl, or some manufactured controversy over whether he was a professor or a senior lecturer... hoping that Hillary can squeeze into the nomination. Once Hillary clinches it, they'll unload all the anti-Clinton dirt they've stored up over the last 15 years and bury her.

It's going to be very ugly.

By the way, slightly off topic, but is anybody else creeped out by Richard Mellon Scaife's sudden affection for Hillary? It makes me want to take a shower.... kind of like that scene in "300" where the old priest licks the teenage oracle's cheek...... Aaaaaaak!

I may be too cynical but I think the reason he's taking a shine to Hillary is to turn off some of the Hillary supporters because the right would rather run against Obama.

If I were Clinton, I'd prefer to lay in a bed of scorpions than to get in bed with the man responsible for funding a large part of the right wing propaganda machine.

I'm convinced that for someone like RMS to turn his affection to Clinton, that there has to be some kind of cold calculation at work.

I agree. I can't believe that she'd even give him the time of day now, but I guess she feels that she has to. I find it odd that she claims she would have severed ties with a preacher like Reverend Wright, yet she'll cozy up to a man who tried to destroy her and her husband. Odd, indeed.

I've heard varying theories as to who the Republicans would rather run against, and good cases can be made for both Democratic candidates. I think it's a given that the GOP will lie, cheat and steal to get McCain in office. No doubt, the Neocons who hijacked our foreign policy see him as another pliable handpuppet that they can use to enrich themselves further. It wouldn't surprise me to see Cheney staying on in some capacity with a McCain administration.

Gee, the ad forgot to mention how when he was a POW he learned about Gov. Reagan's economic theories of supply side/trickle down (his own quote). So while the rest of the POWs were tapping out plans for escape, he was tapping out economic theories of an obscure governor. Yeah, he really has his finger on the pulse of the people.
