During the April 14 edition of Fox News' Studio B, after Democratic strategist Dan Gerstein noted that Sen. John McCain "confused Sunni and Shia," host Shepard Smith asserted, "[I]t's not as if he misspoke three times about the exact same thing, about gunfire in Bosnia." In fact, as Media Matters for America has repeatedly documented, McCain made the admittedly false claim that Iranian operatives were training Al Qaeda for fighting in Iraq three times over the course of two days -- once on March 17 while being interviewed by nationally syndicated radio host Hugh Hewitt and twice during March 18 remarks to reporters in Amman, Jordan. In Jordan, McCain corrected himself after Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) whispered in his ear: "I'm sorry, the Iranians are training extremists, not al-Qaeda," and McCain's presidential campaign subsequently acknowledged the misstatement.

Moreover, as Media Matters further documented, during Gen. David Petraeus' April 8 hearing before the Senate Armed Services Committee, McCain asked Petraeus: "Do you still view Al Qaeda in Iraq as a major threat?" Petraeus replied: "It is still a major threat, though it is certainly not as major a threat as it was, say, 15 months ago." McCain then asked: "Certainly not an obscure sect of -- of the Shiites all -- overall --" Petraeus replied, "No," as McCain said: "or Sunnis or anybody else?" In fact, Al Qaeda in Iraq is a Sunni group, not a Shiite group.

From the April 14 edition of Fox News' Studio B with Shepard Smith:

GERSTEIN: John McCain -- again, I have a lot of respect for John McCain -- he confused Sunni and Shia. This is a guy who's supposedly an expert on national security and Middle East politics. So this idea that Obama --

SMITH: You can't make an argument that he misspoke?

GERSTEIN: He misspoke, just like -- wait, wait --

SMITH: It's not as if he -- it's not as if he misspoke three times about --

GERSTEIN: Actually, he did. He did it twice.

SMITH: -- the exact same thing, about gunfire in Bosnia. There's a big difference.

GERSTEIN: Well, that's true.

SMITH: And I bet he wouldn't take a six-shooter into a duck blind.

GERSTEIN: That's true. But again, it all goes to show that I think a lot of this stuff about who misspoke about what isn't relevant to people's lives. And ultimately, people are going to judge him based on their actions, their record, and what they're going to do for the American people.

SMITH: We shall see.

I guess the big difference between the Shia/Sunni/McCain screw up and the Bosnia/Clinton mistake was one was unintentional and obviously wrong, and the other was calculated and premeditated.

        Very true Tommy.

One person lies and is now going around smearing Obama and claiming she is a hunter. The other one is just old and senile.

Still, Shep tried to smotth it all over as being just a mistake, yet Fox "News" often gives good talking head when Hillary and Barrak goof.  The point here is that Fox "news" is not fair and balanced.  If they were, they wouldn't have to sell it to morons during every commercial break.

I have to work where the job is but I would NEVER want to LIVE there. 50 minutes away is a great place for my family to live why should THEY suffer because of where I have to work? Of course I dont go every day.

DB, I heard it on the radio, and Obama was sort of riffing on Hillary. There were several different jabs (She's Annie Oakley/ She's in a duck blind/ she's got a six-shooter), but the am radio boys took two that were next to each other (the 6 shooter and the duck blind) and decided that Obama was saying pistols were used for duck hunting.

I couldn't vote for somebody that out of touch. If he existed.

GERSTEIN: "...John McCain -- he confused Sunni and Shia. ...I think a lot of this stuff about who misspoke about what isn't relevant to people's lives."

Threatening the lives of U.S. Troops in Iraq, who are attempting to provide some degree of Domestic Security to the new and "fledgling" democracy of Iraq, is something called an "insurgency", which is a thing that uses bombs and gunfire to create as much instability and lack of faith in that "fledgling" democracy as they can... and in doing this, of course this "insurgency" threatens the lives of U.S. Troops there, due (as I said) to their attempts to provide whatever Domestic Security they can, to this formerly(?) destabilized but now "fledgling" democracy, Iraq.

What John McCain has repeatedly demostrated is nothing so simple as merely confusing two Muslim sects, but instead he has demostrated a profound and dangerous ignorance of what it is that constitutes Iraq's "insurgency", and who it is that funds and equips and mans that "insurgency"...

And here we are not so much talking about religious sects, but about nations: Iran and saudi arabia, specifically.

It's not about confusing Shi'a and sunni, it's about being ignorant as to who it is (what nation) threatens Iraq's majority Shi'a "fledgling" democracy, and in so doing, threatens U.S. Troops in Iraq.

It's very relevant to people's lives... it's highly relavant to the lives of U.S. Troops in Iraq.

I'm also more than a little concerned about how much influence the Evangelical Nutbags like Hagee will have on Gramps. They've made it clear that they believe Israel has a divine deed to Israel, along with parts of Egypt and Syria. How much American blood would they be willing to spend to help Israel reclaim what God "promised" them?

              Nerzog,

It seems obvious to me that McCain simply is using Hagee for his endorsement. (I do not care at all for Hagee and his own brand of religious bigotry either.)  I don't think he has a 20 year record of supporting the Minister like some other candidate we all know.

I have no idea of the truthfullness of your claim about Hagee wanting Israel to return to it's Biblical boundaries because those boundaries changed over the thousand or so years between the time of Abraham and the Roman rule.

Why anyone would think McCain would listen to Hagee about anything is beyond me.

However I find it interesting that a Protestant preacher has more than a passing interest in the Jewish homeland.  If you have any links backing up your point, I would appreciate it.

                In Hagee's own words:

"God Himself entered into an elaborate blood covenant (which was eternal and unconditional) with Abraham. In this covenant God gave the Jews a biblical mandate to possess the land forever (see Gen. 15:8-21).

The boundaries of Israel were registered in the Word of God (see Gen. 15:18-21; Ezek. 47:13-48:1-29)."

Again, McCain did not confuse anything or make a mistake.  In fact his statement is exactly the same as Hillary's in that both were straying from the truth in order to serve a personal agenda.  For Hillary it was resume puffing, but for McCain it is continuing the propaganda that Iraq is part of the "War on Terror" and we are fighting the same alQaeda there that were responsible for 9/11 and that Iran is connected to them too.

McCain has "misspoken" several times about the differences between Sunnis and Shi'ites, and yet the media still lets him retain his foreign policy credibility. But when Obama made one controversial remark he is taken out of context and called an "elitist." Give me a break, it's going to be more of the same in Washington if McCain gets elected. Check out Barack's clarification of his statements, I think he does a nice job of doing so.

Wow, these comment threads become a bit esoteric after a while...

Bottom line: McCain either A.) knows absolutely nothing about Islam or the Middle East, B.) is indeed rapidly approaching senility, or C.) is a calculated liar, deliberately trying to muddy the waters about who "the enemy" is and why we're in Iraq, why Iran is "Evil," etc. etc.

(I mean, come on: 3 times?? Once in a Senate hearing questing the head of our military operations in IRAQ???)

If Option C, then he is quite simply Evil. Because these are lies that are causing the slaughter of innocent human beings.

Just as a simple test, some reporter needs to ask him: "Is Saudi Arabia a pre-dominantly Sunni or Shiia country?" And go from there....

(We never seem to bring up any longer the fact that probably 15 of the 19 hijackers on 9/11 were Saudis -- presumably because it's supposed to be common knowledge, but sometimes you gotta wonder.....)
