SUMMARY: During a discussion on CNN about the Democratic presidential primary race, NPR's Ken Rudin stated: "[L]et's be honest here, Hillary Clinton is Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. She's going to keep coming back, and they're not going to stop her."

On the April 27 edition of CNN's Sunday Morning, National Public Radio political editor Ken Rudin, during a discussion about the Democratic presidential primary race, stated: "[L]et's be honest here, [Sen.] Hillary Clinton is Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. She's going to keep coming back, and they're not going to stop her." In response, co-host T.J. Holmes said: "What, Ken?" Rudin replied: "Well, we'll figure that out, there's a lot of ways to imagine that." Rudin returned to the analogy later, stating of Clinton, "[T]here may be a lot of pressure on her from the party bigwigs, whoever they are, to say, look, it's time to go, but she'll say, look, I'm in it until the end. I expect her to be in until the end, as Glenn Close was."

At the conclusion of the interview, Holmes stated to Rudin, "We know you were at the correspondents' dinner last night in D.C., where the president was, and hear you all had a pretty good time. But you look good this morning for partying all night." Rudin replied: "I'm faking it." Co-host Betty Nguyen added: "Maybe that explains the Glenn Close analogy, who knows?" Holmes then stated: "Fatal Attraction, we don't get that reference on this show a lot."

In the 1987 film, Close plays a woman who begins stalking her co-worker, played by Michael Douglas, and his family following a one-night stand with him. In the film's climax, Douglas' character seemingly drowns Close's character in the tub, until she suddenly springs from the water wielding a knife. She is finally shot dead by the wife of Douglas' character.

As Media Matters for America has noted, Monica Crowley, a conservative radio host and panelist on the Public Broadcasting Service's McLaughlin Group, and Atlantic senior editor and blogger Andrew Sullivan have also compared Clinton to Close's character in Fatal Attraction.

From the April 27 edition of CNN's Sunday Morning:

HOLMES: Is there any tide turning -- we're talking about [Sen. Barack] Obama, here. Also, he hasn't been able to close the deal out because he's had so many opportunities, many would say, to close it out, to win a big one, to knock her out of this thing, and every time he gets a chance to, he can't do it. Is there any tide turning among people, and by people I guess I mean superdelegates, that hey, wait a minute, let's take a second here, he doesn't seem to be able to close the deal?

RUDIN: Well, first of all, let's be honest here, Hillary Clinton is Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. She's going to keep coming back, and they're not going to stop her.

HOLMES: What, Ken?

[laughter]

RUDIN: Well, we'll figure that out, there's a lot of ways to imagine that.

HOLMES: Yeah, you can.

RUDIN: But, also if, I think, look, as far back as New Hampshire people were saying, well, you know, if Hillary Clinton loses New Hampshire, it's over. This is still the seventh inning, there is still nine more contests, plenty more to go. But, Pennsylvania, look, the demographics were against Barack Obama from the beginning, in Pennsylvania. It is older, the state is older, it's whiter, it's more women, it's more blue-collar workers. That's been an albatross for Barack Obama.

Now, coming up on May 6th, North Carolina, certainly more favorable terrain for Barack Obama, perhaps Indiana, as well, and then you still have the other contests. So, there may be some superdelegates who would love this to be over right away and are giving Hillary Clinton a second look, but again, he still leads, you know, he still has the lead, and he could still do very well on May 6th.

HOLMES: And last thing here on these two before I get to a question about [Sen John] McCain, if Obama pulls off North Carolina, as he is expected to win, and also Indiana, that's still not enough to knock her out of this race?

RUDIN: No, but nor should it be. I mean, you know, again, you know, there may be a lot of pressure on her from the party bigwigs, whoever they are, to say, look, it's time to go, but she'll say, look, I'm in it until the end. And I expect her to be in until the end, as Glenn Close was.

HOLMES: As Glenn, yes. And we understood -- we understood the analogy, I think.

All right. Tell us, McCain, how is he doing with his image right now?

[...]

HOLMES: All right, Ken Rudin, National Public Radio political editor, thank you for getting up with us. We know you were at the correspondents' dinner last night in D.C., where the president was, and hear you all had a pretty good time. But you look good this morning for partying all night.

RUDIN: I'm faking it.

HOLMES: All right. We'll let you go then.

RUDIN: Thanks.

NGUYEN: Well, maybe that explains the Glenn Close analogy, who knows?

[laughter]

HOLMES: Fatal Attraction, we don't get that reference on this show a lot.

NGUYEN: Very rare.

There's only one reason to enact the Fatal Attraction comparison, the term bunny boiler didn't come from Anne Archer's performance in that film...

No, I was just thinking about what Glenn Close was in the MOVIE...do you think this spokesman was saying something nasty about Sen. Clinton?

Sen. McCain was definitely not a traitor...he just reminds me of Peter Graves...now, not then.

i think his point was that, just like in any horror movie, you can't kill the monster easily.  the monster comes back again and again.  like in terminator (not really a horror movie, i guess), alien, and so on.  i don't think the comment was meant to be complimentary.

It's a great comparison!  Bunny-boiling Hillary hasn't stopped yet and won't despite the pleas of Dr. Dean.  She ain't blinking.

As far as McCain, he isn't called Maverick for fighting with Dems, he's spit in the face of conservatives for years to the detriment of the Republican party.  I say, throw him out with Seargent Schultz and let the guards have their way!

I caught a few minutes of "Morning Joe" today. Apparently Joe was out, and Mika was "in charge". It was a virtual Hillary "love fest". They went on and on about how tough Hillary is, how brilliant her strategy has been, what a great politician she is..... yada yada yada. Of course, they had to portray Obama as a coward for "ducking" another debate.

If Hillary wins the nomination, how long before this good will evaporates? I'm guessing less than a week..... then they'll gleefully inform us just how corrupt and evil Hillary REALLY is... hide and watch. They're systematically destroying Obama, because they know that there's enough dirt on Hillary to bury her before November.

I think it's referring to HC's call for a Lincoln-Douglas "style" debate...which BO has turned down.  As of this past Sunday he's saying no debates before the next round of primaries.

Nice try in avoiding the issue here.

Obama does not want to debate. When he criticized the level of questions, Hillary responded by challenging him to a classic, refereed debate.

He turned it down for one reason only-- she'd kick his butt in a formal debate and he knows it.

If Hillary were refusing a debate, she'd be vilified. So why the double-standard?

What's he afraid of? Sadly, a REAL debate would be a great civics lesson. Too bad Obama's a phony here.

You must be crazy. You think if you give each candidate 60 minutes to speak with a 30 minute rebuttal for each that Hillary's rhetorical skills would carry her past Obama?

I can see it now. Hillary starts reciting her policy lists and rightwing smears until people are bored to tears after five minutes. Give Obama 60 minutes to stump and he'll set the crowd on fire.

But you know this is nothing but desperate posturing out of Hillary. She knows the frontrunning Obama has nothing to gain and will decline her offer. She'd do the same. She may be a shameless oppurtunist but she ain't stupid.

"Well, you remember that cute little bunny rabbit, our kid's pet... remember how much you hated the thing, for all the little dark pellets it used to leave all over the house? Well, have I cooked up a special meal for you tonight, dear!"

Never mind the reference to the maniac crazy woman-shrew (the one in the movie, not in the U.S. Senate)...

Can you believe the terms these "media" 'pundit' hacks think and talk in?

"tide turning, close the deal out, win a big one, knock her out, the seventh inning, an albatross for Barack Obama"

These televised idiots should be embarrassed, to prattle on in words and phrases that they've merely heard somebody else say, that somebody else made up and who knows what they're supposed to mean, but these idiots repeat them, as though they signify an original thought or something.

There are few if any rational sane American voters who go the polls, and register their support for their preferred candidate, thinking in such idiotic terms as "I'll turn the tide", or "I'll close, or not close, the deal", or "I'll knock her out, or not", or "I'll put an albatross on somebody I think"...

Only the idiot "media" 'pundit' hacks talk and think like that... no on else does.

You know what I'd do with about half or all of these televised idiots, if I could?

Since Mr. Holmes used the analogy of Obama having trouble "knocking her (Sen. Boy chauvinism is alive & well & living in our media! Which is the only answer to all this RUSH to end this race. Neither candidate has won OR lost yet. Shame on you with your Glenn Close comparison. Very childish.

The fact that you want this race to end and NOT actually count all the votes, states still ahead & Florida, says it all. By the way Obama cheated AND DID campaign in Florida. He ran TV ads the week before & the week of FL primary! Not one media person called him on it! Except Lou Dobbs

Even so Hillary tromped him, 80% 19% ish!

Rudin, good name as in RUDE?

All we are experiencing is a very close race & we need to ALLOW it to finish!

The childishness of so many jour./pundits makes me all the more SURE it IS time for a woman in the White House!

Buy the way, Hillary won the first super Tuesday & was ahead of Obama for WEEKS, about 155 delegates and you didn't see her saying Obama should quit! Now he is about 125 del. ahead, so what!  Shut-up & let the race finish.

Also your bias towards Obama  is the very reason Obama is STILL an UNKNOWN quanity. The media has refused to VET him for 1 yr. Considering all the negativity surrounding him, Rezko, slumlord, a very shady house deal so they had to put it in Michelles name to hide the deal , Wright, never heard a word in 20 yrs. someone check Obamas ears, 26 bills stolen in state senate( ask Sen Herndon IL st. senate) which is Obamas claim to being ready to be President. YUP that will do it! UGH!

So what the non-vetting/slam Hillary media has done is set us, Democrats, up for a loss in November if Obama is our nominee.  Then Fox & all GOP will shred Obama with all this deceitful stuff of his. Our left wing Obama loving, chauvinistic, sexist, pundits will not be able to save Obama. remember these words, we will lose & it is the our own medias fault for making Obama the nominee.

Of course I believe Hillary WILL be our candidate!
