Exec. producer tells fishbowl DC that Meet the Press "would certainly be open" to interviewing Bob Barr
In a May 15 post to the mediabistro.com blog fishbowl DC, editor Patrick W. Gavin reported that in response to his inquiry following up on a Media Matters for America item asking whether NBC Washington bureau chief Tim Russert would give Libertarian presidential candidate and former Republican congressman Bob Barr (GA) the same platform on Meet the Press that Russert gave Ralph Nader, Meet the Press executive producer Betsy Fischer asserted, "We would certainly be open to having Rep. Barr back on Meet the Press to discuss his candidacy."
The fishbowl DC blog post:
Will "Meet" Book Barr?
MediaMatters asks an interesting question: "Will Russert offer Libertarian candidate Barr the same Meet the Press platform he gave Nader?"
"Meet the Press" Executive Producer Betsy Fischer tells FishbowlDC:
Meet the Press has a long history of interviewing third party presidential candidates ... Ralph Nader, Ross Perot, Harry Browne (Libertarian Pres. Candidate), John Hagelin and Howard Phillips -- just to name a few. We would certainly be open to having Rep. Barr back on Meet the Press to discuss his candidacy. He has previously appeared on the program six times during his career.

Apparently TAKE ACTION! works? Be my guess.......
:)
Remember when they were called "McDonald's Hamburger Restaurants"? They dropped the "Hamburger" part when they started serving breakfasts, expanding their service hours.
Remember MTV, Music Television, that showed nothing but music videos? Replaced by other reality type shows.
Well, apparently MMFA feels they must write about something besides "conservative misinformation" to attract the number of eyeballs they want.
I note that they still maintain the TAKE ACTION sidebar, with contact info for Meet the Press, NBC News, and Tim Russert. They still say: "Express your specific concerns regarding that particular news report or commentary, and be sure to indicate exactly what you would like the media outlet to do differently in the future." I am not sure how you do something differently in the future before the program in question occurs.

Are you like Prince? Formerly known as........ ;)
Nerzog hit the nail on the head later on in this thread, this isn't about some advocacy on fairness in media coverage of Barr, as the previous thread tried to rationalize it by giving Nader's vote % as opposed to the Libertarian candidate, as if that was the impetus behind this MTP booking or something.
This is all about getting Barr exposure and pushing for his media attention so he can swipe some of McCain's votes. It's politically driven, not media fairness at all - to even include Nader as some cpmparison is disingenuous.
Tommy,
I will soon be moving out of Missouri for a job change, so I thought I better change my moniker. I am a chemist and a Harley rider, so I chose Chromium.
Tommy,
Thanks!

It's about fairness in exposure for third party candidates.
I don't need your permission to identify jerkoffs, but thanks anyway. ;0)
BTW, Tommy, do you think God's getting a little more "progressive"? Gay marriage only got us a moderate spring heat wave.I was ready for hurricanes and locusts.

Well there ya go.
Everyone feel better?
Everyone feel better?
I think that's a question best directed at the people who got bent out of shape about the question being asked in the first place. So how do you feel?
You got that backwards again Gov. No surprise there...
I didn't care whether Barr appeared on Meet The Press. That was MMFA, you & a slew of Libs that were overwhelming bent out of shape insisting that if Nader was given face time, then Barr should get a Timmy interview too.
How do I feel you ask?
Already bored having to respond to the likes of you.
Well, for a guy how didn't care you sure wrote a lot about a possible Barr appearance on MTP (one of your several posts about it)...
I would have expected a thread here maybe next Monday. Since Russert had Nader as a guest, then one would expect he'd invite Barr on as well. And as soon as possible. If he doesn't, MMFA would certainly be within their rights to point this out and then ask if Meet The Press was going to extend an invitation.
Wow Jeter, I had forgotten how dead-on that post of yours was on this topic a couple of days ago......right on the M O N E Y.
Thanks Gov, for the reminder.
Ha! Tommy you know that fact will go right over Gov's head.
Wow!! Too funny.
Tommy, I used to think Gov was just pretending to be numb, now I know he really is.
Jeter,
Those of who us merely asked about the premature nature of the thread in the first place have always felt fine. It's those that got all bent out of shape, and always do, when any one of us question a threads placement here......they get so pissy and defensive, I share your concern, let's hope they are calmer now knowing Barr will be on MTP.
Poor dears......
We keep forgetting some here don't look kindly on those of us that dare to ask questions or disagree with their opinion. Ah well, tough :-)
Yeah Tommy let's hope they'll be a lot calmer...though I think Gov might need his binky or he'll just keep squawking ;-)
I'm gonna ignore the child.
Kinda sad isn't it?
Poor little Gov. But I think we'd do him a huge favor by ignoring him. Might force him to go try to make some cyber buds.
“Barr will be on MTP.”
You’re jumping the gun here. MTP is “open to having” Barr on the program.
Dear Irony,
The West Virginia Chamber Of Commerce wants to have a word with you.
They say you're giving their state a bad name.
Just a suggestion. If they ask to meet with you...wear a helmet & body armor.
Your Friend,
Jeter
LOL...Thanks, Jeter...I know you're covering my back, man.
I'm going up to West Virginia in a few days to take a meeting with those folks but I'm not taking my assistant, Mustafa. with me. I will be taking 50 pounds of prime possum meat as a peace offering, however. ;>)
Irony, one more thought... you might want to take along a guitar & learn how to play and sing that old John Denver classic ;-)
Country roads, take me home
To the place I belong
West virginia, mountain momma
Take me home, country roads
Ahh, I am shocked.
MMFA made it seem like in their original thread that it was because Nader got a certain % of vote as compared to the previous Libertarian party candidate, in the interest of fairness and comparable vote percecentages and all.
Are you telling me that MMFA wants to push Barr on MTP to siphon votes away from McCain? You mean it's a political calculation on MMFA's part and not in the express interest of media fairness.
Wow.....
Are you telling me that MMFA wants to push Barr on MTP to siphon votes away from McCain? You mean it's a political calculation on MMFA's part and not in the express interest of media fairness.
Yes. Tommy. All. Libs. Share. The. Same. Brain. And. What. Nerzog. Wrote. Can. Be. Veiwed. As. The. Same. Views. Of. All. Other. People. You. Brand. As. Liberals. Including. Everyone. At. MMFA.
It reminds me of how truly smart are little kids, and of how they learn everything by experience, and how they interpret all the words they hear, by the context in which they hear them used (little kids having no other way, they being unable as yet to read Merriam-Webster's Dictionary, or to have anybody who does read that standard, take the time to define words for them)...
And so picking up on the meanings of words from experience, and context, when they ask their mom for some snack-related toy-related play-related exception to the rules and the routine of the mom-kid day, and the mom says:
"We'll see... maybe."
They frown (and maybe worse), because they know (from experience) that that means "no".
But all is not lost, in keeping one step ahead of such sharp kids, who figure words out from their context, and from their experiences... mom can still put them off, and put off their frowning (or worse), simply by changing the words, to words the little kids haven't learned yet, what they truly mean...
"I'm open to it" mom says.
Which sends the little kid away all optimistic (which is a word few little kids know the meaning of, but a things almost all kids are), thinking "Cool! She's open to it!"...
And then along the way, by learning from experience, and by learning what words mean from the context in which they are used, the little kid realizes that that's just another way of saying "no".
As a money draw, try this on for size.
McCain vs Barr!!! A conservative mano a mano!
Refereed/moderated by Chris Mathrews!
CM actually roasted a phone jock over the use of Chamberline's name. A rare cudo to him for that.
Okay, let's sum up. A few days ago, in the wake of Barr's announcement, MMFA wondered if MTP would have him on, as they did Nader. It prompted protests from the usual quarters, repeatedly grousing that it was premature even to ask the question.
Apparently, not everyone agreed, as fishbowlDC thought it worthwhile to ask MTP directly. They got an answer which MMFA has now passed on.
What we see in response to that is pretty much the same voices that complained about MMFA asking the question now complaining about MMFA telling them the answer!
Which seems to make this another illustration of the fact that some folks are here not to discuss, debate, educate, or enlighten, but only to find a way to gripe about as many posts as they can.
Footnote: I wonder what the response would have been if MMFA had not published this item and the grousers later found out of MTP's expression if willingness to have Barr on. While it's obviously impossible to know for sure, I feel quite confident that cries of MMFA having "suppressed" or "concealed" the "truth" would have rung through the comments.
