AP's Sidoti falsely asserted "the only outside groups running ads in earnest so far are those aligned with Obama"

SUMMARY: In an AP news analysis discussing Sen. Barack Obama's decision to opt out of public financing, Liz Sidoti claimed that "the only outside groups running ads in earnest so far are those aligned with Obama." However, independent group Freedom's Watch has put out ads attacking Obama over tax and health care issues, and the Vets for Freedom political action committee has run television ads attacking Obama over issues related to the Iraq war.

In a June 19 Associated Press news analysis discussing Sen. Barack Obama's decision not to participate in the public financing system during the general election, writer Liz Sidoti claimed that "the only outside groups running ads in earnest so far are those aligned with Obama -- and running commercials against [Sen. John] McCain." In fact, as Media Matters for America has noted, "outside groups" have run ads attacking Obama, including Freedom's Watch, which, in the run-up to two special congressional elections In Louisiana and Mississippi, ran television ads linking Democratic congressional candidates Rep. Don Cazayoux (LA) and Rep. Travis Childers (MS) to Obama, claiming that Obama and Childers would levy "a $2,600 tax increase" on "many Mississippi families" and that Obama and Cazayoux are behind "a big government scheme" for health care that would "cost[] up to 65 billion dollars."

Moreover, the Vets for Freedom political action committee launched two ads in May attacking Obama over issues related to the Iraq war. Until recently, Vets for Freedom featured two surrogates of Sen. John McCain -- Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC) and Sen. Joe Lieberman (I-CT) -- as members of its Policy Board of Advisors.

In her June 19 analysis, "Obama chose winning over his word," Sidoti wrote:

Obama made the money announcement in a video message to supporters -- and sought to empower them to give more.

"You've fueled this campaign with donations of $5, $10, $20, whatever you can afford," Obama said in an appeal seeking donations from $25 to $2,300 and beyond.

"Let's build the first general election campaign that's truly funded by the American people," Obama said -- ignoring the fact that the system he's opting out of is paid for by taxpayers who donate $3 to the fund when they file their tax returns.

Obama blamed his decision in part on McCain and "the smears and attacks from his allies running so-called 527 groups." But he failed to mention that the only outside groups running ads in earnest so far are those aligned with Obama -- and running commercials against McCain.

Liz seems a little disengous (sp?) here. The McGramps campaign is kind of short on cash, but the RNC still has plenty. Realisticly, if Obama stayed with the public finance program he would be letting the opposing party out spend him. No reason for the Obama campaign to intentionaly hurt their chances. And of course she just out and out lies.

"the only outside groups running ads in earnest so far are those aligned with Obama"

Howard Fineman just said pretty much the same thing to Olbermann, who didn't make any attempt to correct him.

Hey MMFA does this get me another chance at being a "Tipster"???

Hey Colonel, better get crackin ;-)

I sleep better at night knowing you boys are on the case. :-0)

And Jeter, you are correct. I haven't watched KO's show in a while but I've seen this type of thing (KO not correcting a guest) happen too often. Although Howard Fineman seems to be a generally good guy, he should be above repeating these memes that seem to seep into the ether.

That's the reason I don't watch these shows anymore. It's a way to actively be misinformed.

And just so I'm understood, I was taking Jeter's specific example and expanding it to include most shows where the host will more likely than not just sit there and say "right, right"without thinking. This problem is endemic with all of these types of shows.

Unless the host is interviewing a lefty, in which case the lefty is never allowed to complete a sentence without being interrupted and called an America hating terrorist appeaser.

Darlin of course you can wear a fedora, I think you'd look pretty sexy in one...we'll pick out the rest of your outfit ;-)

I used to think many of these hosts didn't correct or follow up with questions due to time restraints. But I've seen Matthews badger a guest repeating the same question over & over and taking up most of the interview doing that. Of course Matthews is very selective about when & whom he does this to.

Olbermann tends to have guests on that he usually likes/agrees with, so when they say something he should correct or follow up on, he often just lets it go.

MMFA has never called him on this. And I've come to the conclusion they never will.

It would be nice if the host actually listened to the guest and asked pointed and salient questions. Instead too many seem to be just trying to think ahead, which I'm sure they have to do to a certain extent. But if you're a person given the responsibility for a news show and it's content, then I expect better from all of them including KO.

That said, I'm pretty tired of the same hackneyed guests that seem to be on every one of these shows. New blood is needed.

Hey one of my favorite singers, Frank Sinatra wore a fedora. I can't say I thought he was sexy but I loved his voice and phrasing. Now about that outfit........:-0)

Jeter, I bet you don't watch Bill Moyers Journal on PBS on Fridays nights, but I never miss it. It is an indepth show where people actually get into an issue beyond the talking points and have a fair back and forth exchange of ideas.

Moyers doesn't have flamers on his show, so that may disqualify people who live for that sort of conflict. I consider the cable shows too shallow and not worthy of my time. There are some good interviews on CSPAN sometime as well, but I am aware that they lack the slick "production value" of the cable shoutfests.

In any case, I do get weary of the articles here sometimes. And the repetition of the same exact misinformation being spread by yet another brain dead talker. I understand why MMFA has to keep with it's mission, but man, I seem to need a break from here every few weeks any more.

Okay, now I beleive I'm just talking to myself. Oy vey.

To heck with the fershlugina (messed up) media.

Ha! No Julia you're not talking to yourself...I'm here:-)

I seem to need a break from here every few weeks ...

I hear ya. I've been known to vanish for a week here & there. And I usually take at least a few days off every week these days.

Moyers is not someone I watch very often, though I've caught his program now & then. I usually just forget it's on...you know how us old folks are ;-)

I should probably give up Hardball since I spend most of my time yelling at Matthews.

Liz Sidoti hearts McCain.  Here is a youtube video of this same Liz Sidoti interviewing McCain on April 14, where she first gives him a box of Dunkin Donuts (with sprinkles!) and coffee.  Obama was at the same event, and was asked a question where the interviewer referred to finding "Obama Bin Laden."

So much for the liberal media!
