Politico: Anti-Obama book to be released by conservative press that published Swift Boat smear book

June 23, 2008 6:22 pm ET

SUMMARY: David Freddoso's upcoming book, The Case Against Barack Obama, will be published by Regnery, which reportedly "likens the goal of [the Obama] book to that of 'Unfit for Command,' " a widely discredited book containing numerous false and baseless attacks on John Kerry's military service.

Reporting on the forthcoming book The Case Against Barack Obama (Regnery, 2008), authored by former Human Events writer and National Review Online staff reporter David Freddoso, a June 23 Politico article stated that Marjory Ross, the president and publisher of Regnery Publishing, "likens the goal of Freddoso's book to that of 'Unfit for Command' " (Regnery, August 2004), which was co-authored by Swift Vets and POWs for Truth co-founder John E. O'Neill and Jerome R. Corsi. Unfit for Command: Swift Boat Veterans Speak Out Against John Kerry -- which Regnery touts as among its best-selling publications -- contains false and baseless attacks on Kerry's military service, as documented by Media Matters for America, and in numerous media reports. Media Matters also extensively documented numerous falsehoods put forth elsewhere by O'Neill and other members of Swift Vets and POWs for Truth (previously known as Swift Boat Veterans for Truth).

Regnery, which describes itself as "the nation's leading conservative publisher" and "central to the conservative movement today," has also published books by Dinesh D'Souza, David Horowitz, Laura Ingraham, Ann Coulter, G. Gordon Liddy, Michelle Malkin, Oliver North, and Newt Gingrich.

From the June 23 Politico article:

The same publisher that distributed the 2004 best-seller that took aim at John Kerry's Vietnam service is planning a summer release of what's scheduled to be the first critical book on Barack Obama.

Conservative journalist David Freddoso's "The Case Against Barack Obama" will offer "a comprehensive, factual look at Obama," according to Regnery Publishing president and publisher Marjory Ross.

But the book's subtitle makes clear its perspective: "The Unlikely Rise and Unexamined Agenda of the Media's Favorite Candidate."

Ross contends that the mainstream media has offered insufficient scrutiny of Obama and likens the goal of Freddoso's book to that of "Unfit for Command," the scathing assessment of Kerry's war record that rocketed to No. 1 on The New York Times best-seller list.

This proves just how desperate the right-wing is, that they are going to put another smear and fear book, this time sliming Obama.

Probably be closer to "See Spot Run"

I don't think books get any more basic than that, do they?  Seems about the right level.

Unfit for Command was "widely discredited"? LOL!

MM only wishes that were the case.

The truth is that noone could debunk a single fact in the book. (Please spare me arguments via ChiTrib's Rood. There was nothing that he wrote that contradicted what was in Unfit for Command. The disasgreement was whether Kerry's actions actually merited the medal he was awarded.)

And did anyone actually follow the MM link about the so-called "'baseless' attack[] on Kerry's military service"? The link that MM provides has NOTHING to do with Kerry! Ha!

"Numerous false and baseless attacks" by SBVT? Sorry, MM. Not even close! Unfit for Command stood up to the strongest of scrutiny and fact-checking.

Two things I've always wondered about:

                1) These right wing trolls are always so abundant, so ready to pounce, that they are obviously on someone's payroll somewhere, and,

                2) How come right-wing sites will not allow left-wingers to post comments?

Shoes, you seem to have read the book: exactly why was John Kerry unfit to command?

Was it because, as you seem to indicate, that his Service in Vietnam did not merit the Medals he was awarded?

Why would a man who Served in Vietnam be unfit for command, if his Service there was not deserving of any Medal?

That logic seems to dismiss from consideration for command, any Soldier without a Medal: that doesn't make sense.

Was George W. Bush fit to command, where John Kerry was not?

If so, what Medal was George W. Bush awarded (deservingly so it would seem) that qualified him for command?

Please answer any, hopefully all, of these questions for me shoes... you seem to have read the book, and even if you have not, the questions are still answerable: certainly the reason why John Kerry was unfit to command, can't be found only in a book by that name... and George W. Bush's qualifications to command, over and above John Kerry's, must be known also by someone, hopefully you shoes.

                Thank you.

Hahahahaha, that book was totally debunked but sadly, by even Republicans - far too late to affect the outcome of the election.  Even so , the Supreme Court appointed Bush as President.   I actually decided to never vote Republican again since Bush did not reject the hit job of the book.  You see what that got us, 8 years of the very worst President in our nation's history and the extent of his trecherry is not even fully known at this time.  However, even so, Republicans who voted for him are going to vote Democratic, in droves.  We shall try to undo the horrible mess we have caused.

Why is the word of the United States Navy not good enough?

Why is it that cowards like you denigrate someone who served his country?

How long will it be before pathetic people like you drag those who today are being awarded medals for their service in Iraq and Afghanistan through the mud?

This should be a lesson to anyone who serves their country. Beware of those who avoid service while castigating those who have served their country.

Those keeping this nonsense alive in the media were hiding in their dorm rooms while men like Kerry and Max Cleland were fighting a war that the candy-assed blowhards all claimed they supported while they were chasing girls around the campus, (or boys as was probably the case for an excellent broadcaster from Pittsburgh.)

I can't believe that your side refuses to accept the governments version of Kerry's service, yet you accept the whole stinking, fetid mess they feed you about Iraq.

                Open your eyes.

Oh my. With Shoes' posts the question is always, Where to start? With the fact that "no one" is two words? With the fact that "fact" by definition means something that's true, such that he is saying nothing when he says that "noone" (A ha! Perhaps he's referring to the lead singer of Herman's Hermits?!) could refute a single fact in the Swift Boat book? Or with the fact that there probably was only one fact in the book, and the rest was a bunch of twisted right-wing BS? And, as always with Shoes, I come back to the question, Why bother with this poor, pathetic person who wouldn't know a fact, a healthy emotion or a worthwhile investment of time if it bit him on the leg? Shoes, I pity you. Get a clue. Get a life.

Right. Coexist and whatnot. Nice to see that those that continue to insist the Swiftboat attacks were baseless are those that are elitist enough to call the Republican base stupid when it would have been the Democrat base to which that campaign was targeted. A little bit of cognitive dissonance there. Who are the sheep again? I'm sure Solon will be by sometime soon to tell me.

Why do the airlines have more than 10 pilots per aircraft, when there are only 2 seats?

Why does the Air Force have more than 12,000 pilots and less than 8,000 aircraft.

Answer: You always need more crew than equipment to support crew rest, rotation, down time.  If you don't understand the math we may be able to provide you a picture to help.

This is going to sound like a non sequitur, but it isn't. Things don't have to be completely fair and objective. These people have every right to publish this book (I'm not sure anyone is disputing that). But let's look at MMFA's behavior. Take that stupid "Matthews Monitor" for example. I never once saw his "leg thrill" or "Camelot" remarks on there. I'm sure they saw those remarks; they are always watching, as we know. People pick and choose what they show. It's not always unethical (usually, sure), but spread that angst evenly.

I think MMFA wants to get the word out before an alleged professional liar starts his media tour.

They're not smearing anything or anyone.  They are preemptively attacking the book's publisher for being a known propagator of lies.  Otherwise, I tend to agree, I'd rather see MMFA's review of the book.

"Ross contends that the mainstream media has offered insufficient scrutiny of Obama and likens the goal of Freddoso's book to that of "Unfit for Command,"..."

What is the goal, exactly?  If it's to offer an honest criticism, then why didn't they achieve it in "Unfit for Command"?  No, it would seem that the primary goal is to smear Obama.  Even if I wasn't familiar with this publishing house, the list of authors whose works they've crapped out onto the market is indicative of their lack of concern for honesty and integrity.  Horowitz, Coulter, Malkin, Liddy, for God's sakes?  A nut, a flamethrower, a liar and a criminal.  Quality is not exactly priority numero uno here.

What do you expect from this sort of outfit with this sort of "goal" in mind, honestly?

EWESTON###, don't want to nitpick but I believe that correct name of this conservative publisher is not REGENCY, it is REGURGITATECY. Sorry for the correction.

Does anyone here know anyone that will buy this book? I don't know of any of my Repub friends that bought the last one. This will only make its way to the people thru those wonderful cyst-jocks from behind their Oz-like curtains. Besides, Little Dicki Morris just put out a book about predicting what Pres Obama will do or something like that. This great predictor said Hillary would win in a landslide. And by God, he is believable

But I can't say Regurgitatacy Jorg and I pity the poor fool who'd have to say it more than once.

Yah Dicky and his fellow travelers can be just so believable. Confidence, a heady sense of self worth, continuous stroking of each other. I hope you won't think I'm an elitest or some other nugiehead, but I look for political writers to be not just believable , but correct. I got other ways of getting a feel good, having my erronious suspicions lovingly reinforced is no thrill.

Here is part of the book description in the Editorial review of the book on Amazon.com:

"....In this shocking exposé, Freddoso explores the reality behind the rhetoric, the plans behind the promises, and the faults behind the façade, revealing:

      * Why Obama's inexperience and extreme left-wing voting record is more dangerous than any threat we face today
      * Why the Rev. Wright debacle reveals Obama's poor judgment of character and deceitful nature
      * Why it won't be politics of change with President Obama--it will be liberal politics as usual

Freddoso exposes the real Barack Obama: a typical big-government politician, the #1 most liberal U.S. senator, and--if he were commander in chief--a serious threat to our national security........"

Why do you think I voted for Bush and support McCain?  I support Obama.

I posted the info from Amazon.com to show how this book is being promoted, and what they say is inside because some of the last posters had said we have no reason to believe the book is an attack book.

I should have linked my response to their comments, as later posts have separated  the comments further from mine.

It's laughable to say that a President Obama is a serious threat to our national security. The entire book review write up is funny. I meant to say so when I posted it, but got sidetracked with a phone call.

My sister's chain emails from church members told her that Obama is a Muslim, and last week they told her that Clinton is cheating on Hillary with an actress.... that it is all over the news, and it's the truth, her emails say. This book will provide the email chains like these with more fodder. Food for the ignorant and mis-guided.

Yes, the symbiosis is rather obvious here.  Freddosi gets lots of free publicity from O'Reilly, Hannity, Gibson, Limbaugh et al, and the right-wing slander machine gets another opportunity to do their usual "questions are being asked about Barack Hussein Obama's religion/character/agenda/etc." routine.

And the most funny people here are the ones saying, in effect, "nothing's been disproven about Unfit for Command, despite the fact that the 'facts' have been disproven repeatedly, so quit bothering me with facts!"  I can imagine them on a different topic: "I know Magellan was supposed to have circumnavigated it and Apollo 8 took pictures of it, but you haven't proven that the earth is round!"

We must be careful what is in print...Did you know the one of Obamas' relatives was on the same boat as Magellan and told Magellan that his future great great great great great great grandson would be a Chrismusliam who would run for President. It is the truth....I read it in the new book by Dicki Morris.
