Hume: "[W]e regret the error" in report of Jerusalem Post story about Obama's half brother
SUMMARY: On Special Report, Brit Hume issued a correction following his false claim that Sen. Barack Obama's half brother had told The Jerusalem Post that Obama had a "Muslim background." But while Hume suggested that his only "error" was in repeating a flawed report in the Post, he did not acknowledge that he had falsely claimed Malik Obama had spoken with The Jerusalem Post. The Post did not claim that Malik Obama spoke to the newspaper; the article indicated that Malik Obama gave an interview to Israel's Army Radio, not the Post.
During the June 24 edition of Fox News' Special Report, host Brit Hume issued a correction following his false claim on June 16 that Sen. Barack Obama's half brother had told The Jerusalem Post that Obama had a "Muslim background." On the June 24 program, Hume stated: "[L]ast week, we quoted The Jerusalem Post in the story about Barack Obama's half brother Malik Obama. The Post reported that in an interview with Israeli Army Radio, Malik Obama said his brother would be a good president despite his Muslim background. It now turns out that the Post did not quite understand what Malik Obama was saying in the interview and paraphrased him incorrectly. Malik Obama did not say that his older brother has a Muslim background. The Jerusalem Post has since removed the story from its website, and we regret the error."
But while Hume acknowledged an "error," he understated its extent. Suggesting that his only "error" was in repeating a flawed report in the Post, Hume did not acknowledge that he had falsely claimed Malik Obama had spoken with The Jerusalem Post. The Post did not, in fact, claim that Malik Obama spoke to the newspaper. As Media Matters for America documented, the article indicated that Malik Obama gave an interview to Israel's Army Radio, not the Post. Hume did not mention Israel's Army Radio in his June 16 report. ABC senior national correspondent Jake Tapper -- who reported that ABC News had obtained audio of the Malik Obama interview, which he posted online -- wrote that the Post article "was a sloppy paraphrase that emerged as false evidence."
Media Matters also noted that on the June 19 edition of Talk Radio Network's The Laura Ingraham Show, guest host Monica Crowley falsely asserted that Malik Obama "went on the record to The Jerusalem Post, of all places, and said, 'Oh yeah, Obama's got a really solid Muslim background.' " During her discussion, Crowley played an audio clip of Hume's June 16 remarks about Malik Obama.
From the June 24 edition of Fox News' Special Report with Brit Hume:
HUME: And finally, last week, we quoted The Jerusalem Post in the story about Barack Obama's half brother Malik Obama. The Jerusalem Post has since removed the story from its website, and we regret the error.
From the June 16 edition of Special Report with Brit Hume:
HUME: Barack Obama is a practicing Christian, married in a Christian church, whose children were also baptized in that church. His campaign has emphasized his faith in part to dispel what the campaign calls an online smear campaign which contends among other things that Obama was raised a Muslim. There is even a statement on his official campaign website reading, quote, "Obama has never been a Muslim, and is a committed Christian."
But Obama's half brother is not so sure. Malik Obama tells The Jerusalem Post that "if elected his brother will be a good president for the Jewish people, despite his Muslim background."
The article was also accompanied by an image of Malik Obama holding a photo of him and Barack Obama both in Muslim dress, reportedly taken when the two first met back in 1985.

MM uses the "regret the error" line all the time.
Is MM being hypocritical? Absolutely?
Is MM being hypocritical? Absolutely?
Is Shoes being stupid? As always!!!!
Well, well, well. Another half-assed 'correction'.
Keep up the good work, Brit and the rest of the Faux crew.
On to the next smear Brit-boy!!!
What a disgrace to America.
Subject: WHO IS BARACK OBAMA?
There are many things people do not know about BARACK OBAMA. It is every American's duty to read this message and pass it along to all of their friends and loved ones.
Barack Obama wears a FLAG PIN at all times. Even in the shower.
Barack Obama says the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE every time he sees an American flag. He also ends every sentence by saying, "WITH LIBERTY AND JUSTICE FOR ALL." Click here for video of Obama quietly mouthing the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE in his sleep.
A tape exists of Michelle Obama saying the PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE at a conference on PATRIOTISM.
Every weekend, Barack and Michelle take their daughters HUNTING.
Barack Obama is a PATRIOTIC AMERICAN. He has one HAND over his HEART at all times. He occasionally switches when one arm gets tired, which is almost never because he is STRONG.
Barack Obama has the DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE tattooed on his stomach. It's upside-down, so he can read it while doing sit-ups.
There's only one artist on Barack Obama's iPod: FRANCIS SCOTT KEY.
Barack Obama is a DEVOUT CHRISTIAN. His favorite book is the BIBLE, which he has memorized. His name means HE WHO LOVES JESUS in the ancient language of Aramaic. He is PROUD that Jesus was an American.
Barack Obama goes to church every morning. He goes to church every afternoon. He goes to church every evening. He is IN CHURCH RIGHT NOW.
Barack Obama's new airplane includes a conference room, a kitchen, and a MEGACHURCH.
Barack Obama's skin is the color of AMERICAN SOIL.
Barack Obama buys AMERICAN STUFF. He owns a FORD, a BASEBALL TEAM, and a COMPUTER HE BUILT HIMSELF FROM AMERICAN PARTS. He travels mostly by FORKLIFT.
I thought that was awesome. I especially like "click here for the video of him Pledging in his sleep" and that the arm from which his hand is held forever over his heart never falters "...because he is STRONG!"
You know, humor is powerful, and mysterious too, how it not only affects your thoughts, but your feelings: it's hard to master that power, or explain that mystery.
Something exactly like what you've posted, should be circulated by the Obama campaign itself: I'm not kidding... and if it were made into a television commercial, then believe me, it wouldn't be anything anyone would scoff at or ridicule: it'd be funny, and laughed at and about, by millions of Americans, who are both quietly and not so quietly frustrated and even angry, at the absurd and insidious inferences about Sen. Obama. True, such a television commercial would sweep right over the nation, and make millions of people smile and laugh and be aware... and it would make these inferences look even more ridiculous by comparison, and make them go away: and were they not to go away, they'd become more self-conscious, by the ridicule they'd risk....
This is the kind of thing that Stephen Colbert does, and he's unequaled at it... it's very powerful... it works.
Totally agree Dem...
This should be circulated by the Obama campaign. This is brilliant!!
"Obama is proud that Jesus was an American." Too good.
I agree with Dem. This is a very powerful way to combat absurd allegations.
Thank you for this, Mary. I was just looking at the Urban Legends website (www.snopes.com), just to see what the latest bilge going around was. At last count, there are 22 items about Obama, and only one of them gets the green light for truth (and that was that he was photographed without his hand over his heart, big fat hairy deal); conversely, there are only four items about McCain, three of which are true, and one unverified.
Even at that, the true ones about McCain are intentionally deceptive, such as the one that talks about how great his wife is.
In contrast, you'll notice when you see e-mail forwards of this kind that most of the negatives said about Obama are outright lies.
The same held true in prior months, when there were tons of things about Hillary. In contrast, did anyone get any juicy e-mails about Romney? Going back, the same lopsided score held true in 2004, and beyond. Clearly this is yet another aspect of the media where the neocons absolutely dominate.
How sad it must be to have the right-wing mindset, to assemble and dissemble the kind of nonsense that regularly pollutes our in-boxes. Can some level-headed conservative out there--I think there are two or three on a good day--explain why this is? Why is it that liberals don't need to put together vicious lies and innuendoes about McCain and send them thither and yon? Why is it that we don't have to put together glowing pieces on Obama, carefully excising the embarrassing details?
My own take is that this kind of argumentation works among people who don't want to do their own thinking. And, frankly, they're the types who watch Fox, listen to Rush, and will vote for McCain, anyway, so I'd like to think that they're not going to gain any ground by their behavior. Thoughtful people won't be fooled.
Good point Steven...
I'm sure the sawdust brain conservatives are busily composing their e-mails right now.
Being a brain-dead conservative is no way to go through life.
Hume: "[W]e regret the error..."
He regrets is an error because that means he can't keep spreading it. Oh, wait - this is Brit HUME wwe're talking about - the stone-faced liar. He'll keep using it until the day he dies.....
This was intended for the mental midgets who watch FOX NEWS CHANNEL and take it seriously.
THANK YOU.

I like how they presented it visually. Not the obvious onscreen title like "correction," but "Obama Background Blunder." FoxNews knows how to use headlines and imagery to get its message across.
<>Seriously, if you knew nothing about this story, what would that photo tell you? "Oh, Obama made some blunder about his background."
<> <>Tharri, this is something I've seen more and more of lately on Fox, the visual intended to push one idea while somebody like Hume mumbles the details. Seems to be directed at people who keep the tv on as background while doing other things.I know I've had the tube on while on the phone or working, and have been (momentarily) fooled by these.
The latest trend on Fox looks to be using the results of polls of Fox viewers to support the same BS that Fox is feeding their audience. As an example, I had Fox on, a week or so ago, while playing my guitar through headphones. There was a big bold question on screen, something like
Who is responsible for High Gas Prices ?
below that were some percentages
Government (very high)%
somebody else (middlin')%
somebody else (middlin')%
Oil companies (low)%
It looked like a breakdown of who was getting the money, so I turned the sound on, and heard a quick mention that these percentages were the result of a "fox news poll".
Doesn't that work nice? They feed the zombies the BS for a few days, then poll them. If they've properly absorbed the propaganda, it can be recycled right back to them as what look like cold hard stats.
They keep discrediting themselves over and over and over and . . .
I mean, I need some conservative feedback. Who is still watching and trusting Fox News to actually do fair and balanced reporting? Is the terror alert still elevated by the way?
Fox needs a disclaimer before each broadcast: The following bs is intended for entertainment purposes only.
Hume/Fox
You don't regret the error, there was no error, you swiftboating bastards knew it was a lie when you said it
You don't regret the error, there was no error, you swiftboating bastards knew it was a lie when you said it
Their only regret is that we all know it's a lie.
Oh my gosh, you have got the goods on Hume now. This is a very, very, huge, illuminating event in the field of journalism. This dwarfs the daily, business as usual, ho hum, misrepresentations of abc, nbc, cbs, msnbc, cnn,ny and la times, etc. You have opened my eyes mmfa. Those people at fox really are lying bastards{just getting into the spirit of the enlightened left, I hope it's ok to use profanity even though I am only newly enlightened.Oh silly me, I know I can count on you regulars to correct my grammer, speling, punctuation}:Lets boycott Fox sponsors, petition congress to hold hearings, demand the FCA revoke their license, or at least fine them, lets march on their corp offices, with torches, those scum.
