SUMMARY: On Hannity & Colmes, Sean Hannity criticized the purchase of credits to offset one's "carbon footprint," asserting, "Those offsets -- that is the biggest hoax in the world. ... You know what it's like? You go cheat on your wife, and then say, 'Honey, but don't worry. I bought an offset.' Good luck." Hannity has yet to address the pledge by News Corp. chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch "to be carbon neutral, across all our businesses" -- which includes Fox News -- "by 2010."

On the June 24 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes, co-host Sean Hannity criticized the purchase of credits to offset one's "carbon footprint," asserting, "Those offsets -- that is the biggest hoax in the world. ... You know what it's like? You go cheat on your wife, and then say, 'Honey, but don't worry. I bought an offset.' Good luck." Conservationist Howard Gould responded, "I've got news for you. You better get used to it, because both presidential candidates have talked about a cap and trade system coming down. So you're going to be offsetting yourself, as well, even whether you like it or not." Hannity replied: "I happen to know your wife, and she's a wonderful lady," adding, "And good luck -- and good luck if you ever seek the indulgence." Hannity's comparison of purchasing carbon offsets to "cheat[ing] on your wife" echoes Chris Horner, senior fellow for the energy-industry-funded Competitive Enterprise Institute (CEI), who, during the July 9 edition of Hannity & Colmes, likened the purchase of carbon offsets to a priest buying "adultery offsets."

As Media Matters for America has documented, Hannity has previously derided carbon offsets as a "sham," a "crock," and a "ridiculous concept," and has repeatedly criticized former Vice President Al Gore's reported use of them. However, Hannity has yet to address the pledge by News Corp. chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch "to be carbon neutral, across all our businesses" -- which includes Fox News -- "by 2010." Murdoch specifically mentioned that his plan calls for reducing net carbon emissions to zero "through a combination of operational changes and carbon offsets."

On May 9, 2007, News Corp. announced that all of its "business units will become carbon neutral by 2010 -- through energy efficiency, buying renewable power and offsetting otherwise unavoidable emissions. Becoming carbon neutral is only the beginning of the company's permanent commitment to change the way it uses energy and to reach its audiences on this issue." In a speech that day, Murdoch went into greater detail regarding News Corp.'s plan to use carbon credits to offset "unavoidable" emissions:

MURDOCH: While we reduce our own carbon footprint we will encourage the companies who truck our DVDs and newspapers, sell us paper, and provide an enormous range of products and services -- to all contribute.

Today, we are joining the Climate Group, a coalition of businesses and governments working together to solve the climate problem.

But some emissions will be unavoidable. As a last resort, we will offset these emissions.

A carbon offset is a financial tool to support projects that prevent carbon from being released into the atmosphere. Done right, they will widen the implementation of carbon-saving technologies, and give an incentive to create new solutions.

We have entered into an agreement to begin purchasing carbon offsets this year, from projects that provide wind power in India.

When our net emissions reach zero -- through a combination of operational changes and carbon offsets -- we will be carbon neutral.

News Corp. has since updated its website, including an "Energy" section that states, "We aim to transform our business practices in order to significantly reduce our energy use and carbon emissions. Each News Corporation business unit is on the path to achieving carbon neutrality, net zero carbon emissions." In an "Ongoing Initiatives" section, the website states that "[f]or the second straight year, the Fox Broadcasting Company Programming Presentation will be going carbon neutral," adding that "to reach net zero emissions, Fox will invest in carbon offsets from renewable energy projects that reduce emissions equivalent to the unavoidable emissions from the event." The Ongoing Initiatives section also states:

Fox produced the first-ever carbon-neutral Emmy Awards show. Highlights include partnering with the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power to secure renewable energy for the Shrine Auditorium, installing a solar canopy above the red carpet grandstands, a red carpet and stage area blue carpet made from 95,000 recycled plastic bottles, and a press tent illuminated with only compact fluorescent and LED lighting technology. Plus the solar system has been donated to a local school and will continue generating renewable energy for the next 25 years.

From the June 24 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes:

HANNITY: I drive a hybrid. I've got a Chevy Tahoe -- hybrid in my backyard.

GOULD: Yeah.

HANNITY: That big SUV gets 21 miles per gallon.

GOULD: But are you pro -- I mean, are you talking about putting solar panels on the roof of your house?

HANNITY: As soon as Ted Kennedy puts up his windmills, we'll talk about windmills; we put it off Nantucket Sound; I'll join you. Did you ever fly in a private jet?

GOULD: I have, yes.

HANNITY: Yeah, you have. So why should we listen to you. I mean, with all -- you sound like a typical Lear Jet liberal. Did you ever drive around in a limousine?

GOULD: Sure.

HANNITY: Sure. So why should we listen to liberals --

COLMES: I'm going to give you some carbon offsets before you leave this evening.

GOULD: Exactly, I mean that's what I was getting into right now. The fact is that when I do is -- I actually offset.

HANNITY: Those offsets -- that is the biggest hoax in the world.

GOULD: Well, I don't know --

HANNITY: That you can buy your way -- you know what that's like? You know what it's like? You go cheat on your wife, and then say, "Honey, but don't worry. I bought an offset."

GOULD: Yeah, but Sean --

HANNITY: Good luck.

GOULD: I've got news for you. You better get used to it, because both presidential candidates have talked about a cap and trade system coming down. So you're going to be offsetting yourself, as well, even whether you like it or not.

HANNITY: I happen to know your wife, and she's a wonderful lady. And good luck -- and good luck if you ever seek the indulgence. It's not gonna -- but anyway, good to see you. Thanks for being with us.

I wonder how much time Sean Hannity spends in a confessional each Saturday confessing the lies he tells during 21 hours on radio and TV each week (15 on radio, 5 on Hannity & Colmes, and 1 on Hannity's Amerika) ....

I doubt Hannity is intelligent enough to know he is lying. How many times has he been told the truth about things, just to have them roll off his brain like rain down a drainpipe? Every issue has been answered for him and he just keeps repeating the same nonsense. It's no use, and neither is his commentary, unless it's for entertainment value.

I don't believe Hannity goes to confessional. I looked up his bio and it appears he did not pass theological school. Maybe that was a hint of things to come for him. ( sell his soul to the highest bidder )

Gore has made his combo home-office much more energy-efficient. Those updates/upgrades were just finished last fall, so the full year's comparison isnt available yet, but it looks to me like he has cut his overall energy bill by a large amount.

No fair-minded person says that you or anyone else must limit yourself to any certain amount of energy. What we all should do is try not to waste energy, do what we can to carefully use what we do use, and try to minimize the effect we have on the world.

If you need a big car, buy it, but don't waste gas. If you can afford a boat, buy one, but be conscious of the energy you use and consider offsetting that energy usage in some other way to help the environment and the rest of the 6 billion people you share the world with.

If Al Gore can afford a big house/office combo, then he's entitled to it, but he should be energy wise. He's demonstrated that he is. People who claim that he should not be able to enjoy his wealth while being energy-wise are mean-spirited jerks.

Carbon offsets aren't like indulgences for cheating on your spouse. They're much more comparable to having the good luck to be born and raised in the good old USA and therefore being generous to nations less fortunate than us. We have more and we use more energy than almost anybody, and so we have more of an obligation to help the world not suffer too much from our energy usage. Gore uses a lot of energy compared to many people, even though he's done a lot to cut down on his usage. He 'pays' for that above-average usage by buying energy credits.

Yes and, telling that the subject of cheating on one's wife seems to be so ever present in hannity's mind.  He can blow and blow, but he cannot do one thing to briHg down the wonderful effort Gore has made to help all olf us be energy efficiant.  Poor Hannity just seems so insanely jealous of Gore's awards for his wonderful work.  It is like a jealous fire burning in his belly but the more he yaks and tells lies like he does, the more we are getting the message of his jealous rage.  He deserves pity.

hannity said he drives a TAHOE hybrid. That should be easy to check, right ? We are going to get screwed in this energy conservation kick. I first came to that realization in 1973 when i moved into an apartment and the word of the day was conserve, turn off the pilot light, turn down the thermostat and other little things. It wasn't a year later when the gas company was screaming to the local city council the rates must go up to make up the profit lost due to conservation. Happened also in 1978. just recently the courts slashed the EXXON Valdez punitive charges for the oil spill to a mere pittance.  this little tidbit not only saved EXXON a bundle of money, but also retroatcive money, At the time of the finantial award, the price per gallon of gasoline went up noticeably to pay for these punitive damages, money that will not be returned to consumers due to this court ruling. It is great to be in charge.

He would need to get a brain first before he could get it offset.

(And in case Hannity or someone in his employ is monitoring MMFA, I have a special message from me to Sean Hannity.

        Sean?  Bite me!!!)   :-)

Hannity has a propensity to reduce a complicated issue to the root level, a level his brain has been programmed to digest properly. Just his comment that he is driving a TAHOE hybrid and saving energy tells me he simplified the issue to a level he can manage. Energy conservation has a political/finantial aspoect to it that cannot be ignored. HONDA has a new car that burns hydrogen and claims it produces water as an exhaust. great, but one question noone seems to have the guts to ask is what does it take to make the hydrogen required to drive, lets say  60 miles and how much that fuel costs for those 60 miles ? Is it gas or liquid in the tank ? under what pressure ? Bet you a beer Hannity has no idea what i am asking here without a lifeline.

I wouldn't be surprised if Hannity does that, given that he's one of those self-righteous pompous sanctimonious conservatives who like to lecture about morals.

Actually, back during the Lewinsky days, when Hannity was just a local talk-radio host in the New York/New Jersey area, and he was going on and on about Clinton cheating on his wife, there was another radio host on the same station who said that he was disgusted with the self-righteous criticism of Clinton and said that there was a conservative radio host critical of Clinton who was engaging in adultery himself.  At the time, the conservatives on that radio station were Bob Grant, Rush Limbaugh, and Sean Hannity.

It couldn't have been Bob Grant, even back then he was about 100 years old, and it probably wasn't Limbaugh, considering there are questions about whether or not he is even straight and if he would have done something like that it probably would have been exposed right away because even back then he was a prime target, so that leaves us with Hannity.  He's the youngest, back then he would have only been in his thirties, there are no questions about whether he's straight, and he was relatively unknown back then so there wouldn't have been much media following him around and tracking his personal life for hypocrisy.

Maybe it wasn't, but I wouldn't be surprised.  I've always felt that there's something curious about why nothing about personal was there to expose him other than some hijinks he did in his college days before he dropped out of college eventually.  Maybe there is nothing and I hope there isn't, but you wonder who that radio host was talking about.

      THANK YOU.

Good call. I think a write-in campaign to Hannityville should get an answer concerning his cheating on his wife. I wonder if the temptress was a Great American or did she have to call him a Great American?

I used to ask God to bless all the hypocrites but there are too many now that the Omnipotent One doesn't have time.

Bob Grant sadly is still around , I listened to him before he was fired from WABC in NY in the 90s for accusing the Clintons of murdering Ron Brown. But the man has an audience.

And when they're not listening to Bob Grant, they listen to either Mark Rotten Levin or Michael Weiner.  While they're ironing their sheets in preparation for their next cross-burning.

ARE LIBERALS HAPPY THAT GAS PRICES ARE SO HIGH?

Look at the message on the bottom of the screen. When I saw this live the other night I went nuts... FOX often does this kind of thing, running a written message at the bottom of the screen that amounts to a push poll. Although, totally irrelevant to the discussion, how many FOX viewers now have the false impression that liberals are happy about high gas prices?

The only people that think Liberals are happy with high gas prices are the Kool-Aid drinking 27% on the right. They believe anything that's told them by their radio brains. Thats why they call them ditto heads. They parrot whatever they're told. I've always wondered why the right thinks its a source of pride to not think for yourself.
