Levin falsely accused Obama of lying about McCain's position on immigration reform

SUMMARY: Radio host Mark Levin aired a clip of Sen. Barack Obama saying of Sen. John McCain's position on immigration reform, "[W]hen he started running for his party's nomination, he abandoned his courageous stance and said that he wouldn't even support his own legislation if it came up for a vote." Levin responded: "Actually, that's a lie, and Obama's full of lies. He would support his legislation if it came up for a vote." In fact, during a January 30 Republican presidential debate, McCain said that he wouldn't support his own legislation.
During the July 8 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Mark Levin aired an audio clip from Sen. Barack Obama's July 8 speech at the League of United Latin American Citizens convention, in which Obama said of Sen. John McCain's position on immigration reform, "[W]hen he started running for his party's nomination, he abandoned his courageous stance and said that he wouldn't even support his own legislation if it came up for a vote." Levin responded to Obama's remark by saying, "Actually, that's a lie, and Obama's full of lies. He would support his legislation if it came up for a vote." In fact, Obama's statement is true; McCain has said that he wouldn't support his own legislation.
Media Matters for America has repeatedly documented that during the January 30 Republican presidential debate, Los Angeles Times staff writer Janet Hook asked McCain, "At this point, if your original proposal came to a vote on the Senate floor, would you vote for it?" McCain responded, "No, I would not, because we know what the situation is today. The people want the borders secured first."
From the January 30 Republican presidential debate:
HOOK: Yes. Senator McCain, let me just take the issue to you, because you obviously have been very involved in it. During this campaign, you, like your rivals, have been putting the first priority, heaviest emphasis on border security. But your original immigration proposal back in 2006 was much broader and included a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants who are already here.
What I'm wondering is -- and you seem to be downplaying that part. At this point, if your original proposal came to a vote on the Senate floor, would you vote for it?
McCAIN: It won't. It won't. That's why we went through the debate --
HOOK: I know, but what if it did?
McCAIN: No, I would not, because we know what the situation is today. The people want the borders secured first. And so to say that that would come to the floor of the Senate -- it won't. We went through various amendments which prevented that ever -- that proposal.
But, look, we're all in agreement as to what we need to do. Everybody knows it. We can fight some more about it, about who wanted this or who wanted that. But the fact is, we all know the American people want the borders secured first.
From the July 8 broadcast of ABC Radio Networks' The Mark Levin Show:
LEVIN: This is why it is absolutely critical that we have some controls over who comes to this country and what their responsibilities are, well beyond picking lettuce, cutting lawns, or what have you. That should not be the basis for people entering this country. It may be their basis, but it ought not be ours.
And this, of course, Barack Obama and John McCain do not understand or do not give a damn about. I am concerned about this society and its survival. And it cannot survive if you're importing tens of millions of people over a short period of time -- a relatively short period of time -- who are encouraged by diversity rules, multiculturalism, bilingualism, to hold onto their culture, to hold onto their ways, and then to demand that the rest of the people in this country adopt them as well, whatever those ways are. And some of them are religious, as a matter of fact. That's not how you build a healthy society, that's how you tear one down.
I want you to listen to Barack Obama today to the national council of LULAC, or the League of LULAC, whatever the hell they call themselves. League of United Latin American Citizens. This is a radical left-wing group that throws its muscle around, and you often see its representatives on TV the way you see the representatives of CAIR and others. It's a media favorite, and the politicians kowtow to this group.
Here's Obama today, in Washington D.C. -- the LULAC convention. Cut 4, go.
OBAMA [audio clip]: I know Senator McCain had a chance to speak to you earlier. And I want to give Senator McCain credit because he used to buck his party on immigration. He fought for comprehensive immigration reform. One of the bills that I co-sponsored, he was the lead. I admired him for it. But when he started running for his party's nomination, he abandoned his courageous stance and said that he wouldn't even support his own legislation if it came up for a vote.
LEVIN: Actually, that's a lie, and Obama's full of lies. He would support his legislation if it came up for a vote. And I cited that -- what -- a couple weeks ago, Rich? Wasn't that long ago.
So, Obama should be very happy that both leaders of both parties have basically the same position, which is one of endorsing lawlessness and endorsing the destruction of the culture because, again, I just want to make clear, we have institutions in this country -- special interests, ethnic groups, the public schools, colleges and universities, a legal system -- that discourages assimilation and promotes balkanization.
It's that simple. I hear people say, "We're a nation of immigrants." Yes, but at the turn of the prior century, none of these groups existed. The law wasn't what it is today. And people insisted that you become an American, capital A, an American, and learn the American cultural ways. Today, you're accused of all kinds of nasty things if you insist on that.

The nutty radiowing radio blabbers must be under orders to attack, attack, attack. Seems like they are making their last stand for McCain as a presidential candidate. This onslaught by Rush, Seannie, Leaven, O'Reilly etc., is deciding which person the Cons need to run as Veep. They know that McCain=Bush cannot win on his own. Been listening to ConRadio quite a bit this week to hear what is going on. They are making a full-court effort to paint Obama into a box on every single issue they can find. Rush justs makes things up, why not, he has his cult. Hannity keep repeating himself. It is funny when he thinks he has found the Holy Grail of Get Obama. He just repeats it to everyone, even though most of his people disagree, he cannot help himself. (I'll bet his mommy used to dress him in shorts and a bowtie to go out and play with the kids).
But to this point, Sen. Obama has let them act like fools and counteracted all assualts. These people don't realize that they turn people against the poor Republican Party. I say it again, when will the Republican Party dismiss all of the Cons from their party. WHEN?????
I have been noticing this as well. I kind of get the feeling that the conservative talkshow guys are desperate because they believe they may be losing their influence and/or relevance. This is no longer about McCain vs. Obama, it is the last hurrah of the playground bully who has always had his way in the past. They can't stand the idea of not being as influential.
I have liked McCain most of the time, but the Republicans really made a mistake picking him as the nominee from a strategic point of view. McCain's speeches really don't inspire. He can't read a teleprompter well. His positions are all over the map. He is simply past his prime and it is really sad. I think he would have been the best Republican candidate in 2000, but it is clear he just doesn't have "it" now.

McCain has not reversed his position on illegal immigration. McCain has resorted to political double talk in trying to cover his tracks with the voters.
-- Senator John McCain told a major Hispanic group here Tuesday that he remained committed to passing the kind of immigration legislation that angered many Republican voters last year. -- NYTimes
-- without excusing the fact they came here illegally or granting them privileges before those who have been waiting their turn outside the country -- NYTimes
Does McCain support amnesty? You damn betcha! Saying that those illegal aliens already here are not getting amnesty because they will be subject to "penalties" is cowardly political talk.
The truth of the issue...for those supporting any McCain/Kennedy type reform...is that they have admitted to those illegals already here and those planning to arrive illegally that our system is broken and our sniveling politicians don't have the will to correct it.
The message from McCain and anyone supporting his position...to those border jumpers is clear. We're going to build some fences and beef up the border patrol...but don't worry we're not really very serious about keeping you out. It's just a game to appease the American citizens. If you can beat the system...welcome aboard. Sure there'll be some penalties if we catch you but it's still alot better than standing in line to immigrate legally.
The immigration system is broken because of our inept government and it's 19th century mentality in the 21st century...the real reason why our government fails miserably in all most every case to operate any of the grand social schemes enacted by a feckless legislature.
Instead of offering them the chance to pay a fine and remain here...how about this...pay a fine and then get your ass sent home. Don't have the money? No problem, you can work it off...and then get sent home.
The horde of illegal aliens didn't get here overnight and we can't deport them overnight...but we can sure as hell get started.
The horde of illegal aliens didn't get here overnight and we can't deport them overnight...but we can sure as hell get started.
We could take one step to greatly improve this country by deporting Wesley. :-)
So you have no problem whatsoever with millions of people crossing our border illegally? Do you have an opinion on this matter? Wesley put forth his point of view where is yours?
So you have no problem whatsoever with millions of people crossing our border illegally
Actually, I thank them every time I visit my local salad bar.
I guess that is your way of saying that you have no problem at all with millions of people entering this nation illegaly. Thanking them for your salad? Good God! First of all, could you be anymore elitist with your attitude toward those people? Secondly, becasue you have fresh vegetables to eat at some feeding trough restaurant does in no way justify law breaking. Thirdly, I imagine you won't be thanking anyone when you get salmonella from eating your wonderful salad that the little mexicans picked for you.
I am not sure there is a solution to this problem. It might be better to first understand or at least think through why this is happening and then move on from there.
IMO, the fundamental reason this is happening is because there are comparatively far better opportunities to make more money in the US than there are in Mexico coupled with the fact that we limit the number of immigrants allowed to enter the US legally. Until that situation changes by lowering our standard of living or raising Mexico's or we allow in more legal immigrants. Of those options, the best option appears to raise Mexico's standard of living, but that is the one least in our control.
Now we can build walls, moats with alligators in them, guard towers...etc. (and I am not necessarily opposed to that effort), but it is not likely going to have any real effect, because the difference between the US and Mexican standards of living is just far too vast. That has been the case for most mass migrations. Thankfully, my relatives had a legal way to enter this country during the Potato Famine or else they would have been in the same shape as the current migrants from Mexico. I am sure if there was an easy legal way for Mexicans to migrate, they would surely do it. Can we at least agree on that?
Something a systems engineer will tell you is that if people aren't using the correct (in this case "legal") process, then there is more than likely a bigger problem with the process than the people not using it.
This may seem like a non-sequitur - I don't know how familiar you are with the 2nd Law of Thermodynamics, but I find it applies to a lot of things besides just entropy.
I think a politician would net gain votes by taking on this issue in a populist approach. The problem is he/she would not only lose campaign funding from the corporations that benefit from illegal immigrants, he/she would also likely be attacked mercilessly by fronts for those corporations.
I think the lack of action on this issue shows that candidates are more worried about keeping the campaign donations flowing than they are about votes.
This real problem which evolved into a possible "wedge issue" has failed for one of the parties. Nothing positive will be done verbally or by the Bush Adminstration until after the election. Any real legislation is on the back-burners. This is one of the lame-duck issues whose priority lessened.
Basically, all of the bums in Washington are in the four-corner offense or more aptly, using the Washington version of "rope-a-dope(s)". Shame on all of them.
This guy is too stupid to even know that McCain has reversed his position. Unlike Charlie Gibson who asked McCain a number of questions about Obama's (non-reversal) reversal on Iraq and how he planned to use it in his campaign without ever mentioning McCain's own numerous reversals.
It's impossible for Obama to lie about McCain's immigration policy.
McCain doesn't have an immigration policy.
Mark R. Levin likes to talk about how he is a lawyer and a constitutional scholar. I don't think he is painting a great picture of lawyers and constitutional scholars by his continuing support of George W. Bush and by his constant lying in order to support McCain or even his continuing lies which defend George W. Bush and Dick Cheney when they clearly shouldn't be defended at all. I wouldn't want any type of legal advice or opinions about the meanings of certain passages in the constitution from someone who still defends Bush, Cheney, and even McCain at this point.
THANK YOU.
