In a July 14 Washington Times article, staff writer Andrea Billups characterized the tone of a Michigan campaign event featuring Sen. Barack Obama's wife, Michelle Obama, as "as much estrogenfest as it was campaign rally" and later wrote: "Even Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm got in on the girlie show as they campaigned together." Describing the event with Obama and Granholm, Billups wrote: "[T]he economic bantering did not begin until after the two-term Democratic governor offered a gal-pal fashion compliment, telling the cheering crowd of mainly black women that while she and Mrs. Obama had something in common as Harvard Law School graduates, she would not bare her arms in public."

From the Washington Times article:

The couches on stage were sleek and white. Think Dwell magazine meets Oprah's confessional talk lair. The tone of the event was as much estrogenfest as it was campaign rally, as Michelle Obama hit the stump in Michigan Wednesday as part of two-day Midwest swing and a revamped strategy designed to soften her image and attract more female voters, a bloc much needed for her husband to win the White House.

Even Michigan Gov. Jennifer M. Granholm got in on the girlie show as they campaigned together in struggling Pontiac, Mich. Yes, Mrs. Granholm told Mrs. Obama, her state was bleeding jobs and desperate. But the economic bantering did not begin until after the two-term Democratic governor offered a gal-pal fashion compliment, telling the cheering crowd of mainly black women that while she and Mrs. Obama had something in common as Harvard Law School graduates, she would not bare her arms in public.

What is wrong with these media people?  Can't two women appear in public together without it being an "estrogenfest"?

It would take way too long to list what's wrong with the media here. There are some very good books about it, though. One called "Lapdogs" comes to mind right off the bat.

I remember the media describing the Republican debates as resembling a delicatessen.

My favorite description of the Republican presidential hopefuls debating on stage was:

          'Wax museum of failure'

Well this exchange alone qualifies it as a "girlie show" ;-)

And just to clarify before someone has a temper tantrum...I'm kidding around here, being sarcastic [note the winky face].

      Girlie show?

Others may have stronger feelings about it than I do, but I don’t think this analogy was the least bit clever or topical.  The term “girlie show” evokes notions of burlesque entertainment and spectacle.  To use it with regard to an event such as this one is just plain lame and stupid.

No terrorist fist jabs in evidence then?

They should invite him to the next similar event. Perhaps someone might place an appropriate piece of footwear in an appropiate place. With feeling!

A possible win win situation. I don't see MSM failing to cover his recovery time, but you never know. something real might make the news in the interm.

      It could happen.

As a woman, I am utterly and completely insulted. Would it be OK if they said it was a minstrel show as well? I mean, it was mostly black folks, right?

I am starting to believe that, as racist as our corporate-controlled MSM can be, it pales in comparison to how misogynistic they are. Looks like this piece of filth was written by a woman. That in itself is even MORE despicable. I don't usually do this very often, but I'm going to give that asshole of a reporter a piece of my mind.

I am sick and tired of the rampant sexism that has been growing in our society during the past 8 years. It's a direct reflection of the horrible fascist jerks in power. Anti-woman, anti-gay, anti-minority and the people have HAD it.

        Helen,

I think you are way off base. The current right-wingers are not anti-women, anti-gay or anti-minority.

They are pro-women (staying in the kitchen), pro-gay (staying in the closet) and pro-minority (staying in poverty). See they're not anti anything.

Would a meeting between two male politicians be described as a "circle jerk"? It's shocking that the Times has no idea, or no concern that their language is sexist, and demeaning to women.
