Savage reportedly likened Media Matters to HIV

SUMMARY: A WorldNetDaily article reporting on the controversy over Michael Savage's July 16 remarks about autism stated that Savage "told WND that Media Matters itself is as much a part of the story as autism," adding: "Acting like the HIV virus, he said, 'they invade the body politic and mimic the defense cells until they poison the entire organism.' A July 22 WorldNetDaily article reporting on the controversy over nationally syndicated radio host Michael Savage's July 16 remarks about autism -- documented by Media Matters for America -- stated that Savage "told WND that Media Matters itself is as much a part of the story as autism," adding: "Acting like the HIV virus, he said, 'they invade the body politic and mimic the defense cells until they poison the entire organism.' "

The article also noted that "a coalition of groups that advocate for children with autism responded, staging a protest outside the studios of [New York] radio station WOR, which carries Savage's program." The article continued: "Savage commented that 'some in New York found it odd that the protesters were almost all men, they had neatly printed signs and there were no children. They suspect it was a staged protest by the Stalinist Savage-haters.' "

The article quoted Savage asserting, "I attack falsely diagnosed cases, the misdiagnosed and the outright fraud artists through a bold parody, and Media Matters rips the parody out of context." In fact, as Media Matters noted, Savage began his July 16 remarks by saying, "Now, you want me to tell you my opinion on autism, since I'm not talking about autism? A fraud, a racket. ... You know what autism is? I'll tell you what autism is. In 99 percent of the cases, it's a brat who hasn't been told to cut the act out. That's what autism is."

During his July 21 show, Savage falsely recast his July 16 comments and characterized Media Matters as a group that is "filled with anti-family individuals who do not marry; they're men who like men."

From the July 22 WorldNetDaily article:

Standing by his criticism of the autism "racket," nationally syndicated radio host Michael Savage devoted his entire three-hour show yesterday to the topic, allowing experts and callers to weigh in on the controversy sparked by a left-leaning media watchdog's campaign against him.

The Web-based Media Matters -- which describes its task as "correcting conservative misinformation" -- urged people to call their local radio stations to hold Savage "accountable" for his comments during a July 16 broadcast of the Savage Nation, the country's third most popular talk show, with more than 8 million weekly listeners on 350 stations.

Savage explained in a statement on his website that his assertion autism is a "fraud" and "a racket" was "meant to boldly awaken parents and children to the medical community's attempt to label too many children or adults as 'autistic.'"

[...]

He told WND that Media Matters itself is as much a part of the story as autism. Acting like the HIV virus, he said, "they invade the body politic and mimic the defense cells until they poison the entire organism."

Summing up the controversy, he said: "I spend my entire life championing helpless children, because of the tragedy of my brother Jerome. I attack falsely diagnosed cases, the misdiagnosed and the outright fraud artists through a bold parody, and Media Matters rips the parody out of context, stirs up the autism community against me, and here we are!"

[...]

In New York City yesterday, a coalition of groups that advocate for children with autism responded, staging a protest outside the studios of radio station WOR, which carries Savage's program

Savage commented that "some in New York found it odd that the protesters were almost all men, they had neatly printed signs and there were no children. They suspect it was a staged protest by the Stalinist Savage-haters."

Uh-oh..."neatly printed signs"..clearly a tip off that these were homos.  It is common knowledge that gay men are obsessively neat printers.

By the way, why pussyfoot around with picketing and calling radio stations?  That's fine as far as it goes but a well organized boycott of the enablers who choose to sponsor this maniac would be the most effective. It is the action that broadcasters fear most because it hits them right in their pocketbooks.

Well, let me put it this way, while I do have certain criticisms of MMFA, the downright name-calling of MMFA and it's members (including you and me) and this attempt to divert the issue from autism and the pharmaceutical industries to the attempt to make MMFA a Soviet/Nazi-esque organization who is out to get Michael Savage is something that's making me think long and hard about this guy.

I'm for the First Amendment all the way (and it protects him like it does me), but certain statements do generate certain reactions. I for one don't think of MMFA as an un-American, Nazi-esque, Soviet Union entity that's designed to be a stepping stone for censorship of all forms of unpopular speech. I see MMFA as a journalistic "checks and balances" that our Founding Fathers would approve of.

I try to see both sides of the issue and listen to what both people have to say and see where both sides are right and wrong at, but this to me... I-I can't see where this guy is coming from at all with this rhetoric...

Either MMFA has brainwashed me into seeing that Savage is who he is, or they've awakened me into seeing that Savage is who he is.

this attempt to divert the issue from autism and the pharmaceutical industries

That issue is the diversion Weiner attempted, and you have apparently bought into it 100%. You have literally forgotten his original words and believe his lame first attempt at an excuse for his words, which are inexcusable.

Once you check your DNA for humanity, check your brain cells for memory function. They're not working.

What parody where? There was no parody. As far as I understand, it was just a raving lunatic throwing out something offensive and hoping that he wouldn't catch sh!t for it. And now that said sh!t is hitting the fan, he's throwing out some more insults and senseless claims to throw us off track from the fact that he made those comments and should be held accountable for them. Yeah, not the best time to make that point I suppose.

But I do think MMFA (and other political sites and youtube) has inhibited the professional Republicans like Savage and Limbaugh et al.

If it weren't for the internet, I think we'd be well on our way to a very different kind of country.

Eddy, what amazes me is that even with the internet and the ease it has brought in instantly obtaining (correct) information that these jokers like Limbaugh and Hannity, and others at FOX, and also campaign surrogates, can get away with the outright lies and distortions of fact that is their stock in trade. It makes me furious to listen to these guys when, literally, almost every few seconds I can pick out a demonstrable falshood. The internet is there, along with a wealth of information, but people are still too stupid and/or too lazy to get the facts for themselves.

I hear you.  The net’s had a moderating effect but we also have to remember that the problem here isn’t just the propagandist but also the eager consumer of the propaganda—they want to believe it.  For example, the Savage Nation wants to believe that there is an evil group of Liberals to blame for everything.  They also want to believe his false rationalization for MMFA scrutiny ( MMFA as a gay interest group, as opposed to a media watchdog which happens to be led by a gay man.) attacking him so they can continue to believe that he is on the square with regard to the other stuff.

A little different approach for the purer Republican types like on Fox and Limbaugh.  But the same principal.  Only with those guys anyone who isn’t a Republican is the bad guy. (they use ‘liberal’ also but for them it’s more a slur for anyone they don’t like (non-Republicans).  And their audience wants to believe that Dems are the bad guys---it feels good to just be able to blame everything on someone else and they don’t want to lose that feeling.

Maybe the wrong time again, but I have to say the Limbaugh/Fox bunch are far the more despicable characters and the more intellectually dishonest.  Savage is wild and crazy at times but they do far damage overall.

Not to change subjects, but I've posted your sentiments more than once on this site.  The only reason Limbaugh, Hannity and all these other hate filled commentators are allowed to spew their hate rhetoric is because many people in this country don't want to hear the truth.  They are comfortable living in their lie and having someone on the radio or television to validate their lie.  Case in point, Jeremiah Wright is a black militant separatist but Pastor Hagee is a prophet.  Jesse Jackson is a race baiter, but Pat Buchanan is an intelligent political commentator.  How do you label someone by a standard you don't hold others too?  It's in the media, but it really speaks to the attitude of the public, which is why I'm so glad action is being taken agains this scum Savage.  It's about time people agreed on an issue without race, gender or political affiliation being a factor.

I wonder if the stories he's telling about his brother are even true? That might be something for someone to work on.

Does he actually think that this story wouldn't have gotten out if it hadn't been for Media Matters?  When you broadcast nationwide and say something stupid people are going to hear about it.

Dr. Michael Savage (Weiner, whatevah) and his kind have a long history. In popular culture and novels, we find a "Savage Nation" and it's resident loonie. "All the King's Men", a brilliant book by Robert Penn Warren, presented a fictional, but obvious, view of Huey P. Long, the populist governor of Louisiana in the 30s. The book is a classic look into the dark side of politics and power. Andy Griffith's 1957 movie, "A Face in the Crowd", directed by Elia Kazan, tells the story of the discovery and rise of a powerful and sinister radio star who commanded the attention of millions of rabid fans by his equally rabid speeches. But the best and most obvious work to compare is the wonderful "Network", the 1976 masterpiece starring Peter Finch as the crazy Howard Beal, who, after being fired from his news program for low ratings, told his audience he would kill himself on-screen during his last broadcast. The ratings shot up to the skies and Beal was given his own starring show, "The Howard Beal Show" in prime time, now watched by millions. Howard, who was now called "The Mad Prophet of the Airways", would hypnotize the audience with outrageous rants about everything, usually urging the mob to "Go the window, and scream 'I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take this anymore!!!!'".

Dr. Mike speaks for all those people "out there" who have no voice, but do not lack for suspicions that the rest of the world is just pulling the wool over them. Dr. Mike is the voice of everyone "out there" who knows, in his or her heart, that smartypants are infesting everything and have to be exposed. His authority is respected; he is, after all, a Doctor of nutritional ethnomedicine and is an expert in homeotherapy. He has written many best-selling books. But, like the sad Howard Beal, he has a screw loose. He is "mad as hell, and he's not going to take it anymore!!!".
