MSNBC on-screen text attributed to Obama camp claim that Obama met with troops in Iraq without press -- but NBC had reported it as fact

July 28, 2008 5:22 pm ET

On the July 28 edition of MSNBC Live, on-screen text stated, "Barack Obama's Campaign," beneath which was additional text stating, "Obama camp: He met troops in Iraq without American press." However, while the text attributed the assertion that Obama "met troops in Iraq without American press" to the Obama campaign, NBC chief foreign correspondent Andrea Mitchell, who was with Obama on the trip to Iraq, reported the same thing earlier in the day on MSNBC Live, asserting that she had personally confirmed it. Mitchell said, "I can attest to the fact that he did visit troops in Iraq only four or five days earlier, that there was no notice of it, that I confirmed that it happened, but they had no video of any type and no reporters. And that he's been to Walter Reed. So let's at least get that off the table."

This is one of mmfa's weakest ever attempts.

Apparently the American public is so utterly stupid...mmfa has to referee this non-story...using Andrea Mitchell as the judge. Yes, the same Mitchell that mmfa regularly savages for biased reporting.

Give it up mmfa...the story has run out of gas. McCain's attempt to blacken Obama's image has been met with bipartisan agreement that it was shoddy...this is weeeeaaaakkk.

        I gotta agree Wes.

Did anyone doubt Obama met with the troops in Iraq? I didn't hear about anyone raising doubts about that. Maybe I missed it?

But thank you Andrea. And MMFA thanks you too ;-)

Yep, good use of the ol' bean, Wes.

Probably just a MMfH breaking in a new intern.  Need to start them off slow - get their feet wet so to speak.

Can you imagine being a newbie and having to columnulate... columnicate..... columnbine..... write a column about savage-weiner or hannity?  Why, even the old pros are nearly asphyxiated by the stupidity.  What chance would a rookie have?

Congratulations, Shoes. Your cluelessness quotient is soaring. MMFA is making no implication that the word of Obama's camp is unreliable, only that MSNBC is trying to push that idea.

Read slowly: Even the McCain supporting media has said something is true, but in reporting it again, they attribute it to Obama's camp. Their audience, who have been fed Pro-Grampy BS, are led to believe that it's a partisan statement from Obama's people. You've got it completely ass-backwards.

So there's no difference between what a campaign claims and what a reporter says?  Surely the latter is taken more seriously, so it conveys a different impression to viewers.

The fact that Mitchell is cited so often for misinformation only supports the point, since she has no motive to lie about this.  If you want to say that this undercuts previous arguments about Mitchell being "biased", that's a different story.

You make a great point Wes.  MMFA is essentially conceding that people inherently mistrust politician's "camps", so they prop up Andrea Mitchell as being more of a trustworthy source.  Use her when it's convenient; but when she's not, imply she's a misinforming partisan hack who slants her reporting against liberals.

        Weak and transparent.

MSNBC already reported that Obama met with troops.  Its above caption implies nothing more than a McCain/Obama - point/counterpoint - when in fact MSNBC already reported that Obama met with troops.  It's a fairly simple point.

Well if the caption states an "Obama Camp" declaration, I would assume any particular "camp" would not be so foolish to claim something so easily verifiable if it were not true.  So, seeing that caption, it is more than a point/counterpoint, obviously.  Sorry you don't trust Obama's "camp" to be more truthful that you need Andrea Mitchell to verify it for you.  And I thought I was a cynic.

Why?  Conservatives lie about easily verifiable things fairly often.  Just because you don't think Obama's camp would do something, that doesn't say anything about what other people might believe.

I just think the point was not well made at all in this article, and the "link" should have been made more clearly  to the Tamara Hall article. See the "said" link pasted below, and the article above.

( Mitchell said, "I can attest to the fact that he did visit troops in Iraq only four or five days earlier, that there was no notice of it, that I confirmed that it happened, but they had no video of any type and no reporters. And that he's been to Walter Reed. So let's at least get that off the table.")

The screen caption is just an another piece to ad to the Tamara Hall article, and show that MSNBC, and Andrea Mitchell have mentioned that Obama visited the troops (without media) but Tamara Hall failed to mention that. She SHOULD know what her own station has reported, and she should be challenging the ad, not going along with it...get it?

From MMFA Tamra Hall article:  "Summary: MSNBC's Tamron Hall noted that Sen. John McCain was "ripping" Sen. Barack Obama "for not visiting wounded American troops" on his "global tour," then aired a clip from an ad released by McCain's campaign which asserts that Obama "made time to go to the gym, but canceled a visit with wounded troops." Hall did not note that, as NBC's Andrea Mitchell previously reported, Obama did in fact visit wounded troops on his trip while in Iraq, going to "a casualty unit in the Green Zone without photographers as part of the congressional delegation."

Have you noticed this concentrated reach coming from all these networks,I know silly question. But not to long ago I was listening to a progressive station and the person was talking about all this pending legislation from the communications industry that is before congress.

Seems that, this may be a contributing factor.Today seemed to be non-stop Barack didn't meet with the troops, and I truley believe that this race is nowhere near as close as the MSM keeps telling us it is.

I think or should I say,I know if they told the real poll numbers people would stop watching the garbage that they are trying to pass off as news.

I hear HRC is going on the campaign trail for Barack,I think this week.No Bill in sight though.
