SUMMARY: On Hugh Hewitt's show, the Politico's Mike Allen said that "Senator [John] McCain had a good week last week" and stated it may be because of the McCain campaign's "Celebrity" ad, which "suggested [Sen. Barack] Obama is going to raise taxes." Allen did not note that the claim is false. In fact, Obama has proposed cutting taxes for low- and middle-income families, and McCain's own chief economic adviser has reportedly said it is inaccurate to say that "Barack Obama raises taxes."

On the August 5 broadcast of The Hugh Hewitt Show, Politico chief political correspondent Mike Allen said that "Senator [John] McCain had a good week last week" and asserted that "people thought it was because of" the McCain campaign's "Celebrity" ad, but "[i]n fact, it may be because that ad suggested [Sen. Barack] Obama is going to raise taxes." Allen added: "Maybe that's the real Obama vulnerability ... if they start talking about how he'll raise your taxes." But, while noting what he said was the possible effectiveness of McCain's accusing Obama of planning to "raise your taxes," Allen did not note that McCain's claim is false. In fact, as Media Matters for America has noted, Obama has proposed cutting taxes for low- and middle-income families, and McCain's own chief economic adviser, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, has reportedly said it is inaccurate to say that "Barack Obama raises taxes."

An analysis of the candidates' tax plans by the Tax Policy Center found that "Senator McCain's tax cuts would primarily benefit those with very high incomes," while "Senator Obama offers much larger tax breaks to low- and middle-income taxpayers and would increase taxes on high-income taxpayers."

From the August 5 broadcast of Salem Radio Network's The Hugh Hewitt Show:

HEWITT: Mike Allen, after a bad week for Obama, and he's flipped again and slipped again here on Tuesday, the polls have drawn very close. Although the AP poll this afternoon shows Obama with a 6-point lead, some polls have McCain even a point or two ahead. Do you sense this is where we're going to stay through the conventions?

ALLEN: I think it is. I think that, if there was to be a big bounce for Senator Obama, it would have come after his trip. I think that it's undeniable that the trip had subliminal benefits for him, as far as people thinking about him in a commander-in-chief role. I think, in the fall, that will pay off. But did it -- I think you'll agree, it did not have any immediate, measurable impact. In polls, in fact, Senator McCain had a good week last week. I think people thought it was because of the "Celebrity" ad. In fact, it may be because that ad suggested Obama is going to raise taxes. Maybe that's the real Obama vulnerability, because if they start talking about how he'll raise your taxes.

HEWITT: You know what I think? It's partly that, but it's also gas prices, Mike Allen. And the Marie Antoinette Democrats, led by the speaker, just don't seem to care. They went home. I think the Republicans did a fine thing by staying. I think that issue goes on and on, in terms of people remembering every time they fill up their gas tank -- every single time.

5.7% unemployment, biggest housing crash in US history, the biggest jump in "problem institutions" since the savings and loan crisis of the 80s, escalating food costs, energy prices, and $12 billion per month bill from the never ending Iraq war.

      LOL

"Obama will raise your taxes" is a good Republican theme.

You left out using taxes to bail out corporate failures, deregulation to allow Enron, and soon to be given presidential pardons to cover the crime of the century.

SO your saying that 94.3% of American that wants a job has one, and for some reason I keep hearing that we need illegal Immigrants here because of jobs that American do not want.  SO, if you take away the illegal immigrants (Thanks BUSH for that open door border) we would have everyone working.  Plus with everyone working we would not have forclosures or even better we could get the special mortage break that was given to some of our Senators.  Next we just take the oil that we fought for in the first place, and bring it here, repay the Iraq bill due to us and all would be good.  Wow that was simple, better to have a idea then just bitch like 1602

Yeah.  That was a real fine thing the Reps staying in DC pretending to debate when congress is not in session.  I seem to recall Dubya calling this sort of thing "political theater" when the Dems tried anything similar prior to the 2006 elections.

Theater of the absurd.  The Republicans quashed a Democratic proposal that oil from any new drilling would stay in the U.S. and not sold to China or India, or any place else.

I guess the Republicans prefer oil profits over lower gas prices.  But then again, it's the oil barons who fund their campaigns, so they know not to drail the straight-cash express.

The house minority leader was seen today taking in a round of golf. You could tell his concern on this issue was affecting his game.

Republican Liar Mike Allen revealed his right wing conservative favoritism during his Washington Post days.  This is not a surprise to hear him repeating pro-Republican lies.

Added fact: Politico.com is a right wing conservative news blog.  They should rename themselves GOP-Politico.com

Just like a lot of the righties here, Politico tried to pretend when it first began that it was non-partisan.

There's so much evidence that it isn't true that it should be part of any discussion about the organization.

The right used to always say "the liberal media", even though it wasn't true.

What we need to say is "the rightwing Politico.com" whenever we talk or write about it, because it is true.

You have to realize that they are on radio and due to the dire economic conditions in the country, only those earning over $250,000/year have access to the public airwaves.  Therefore, what he is saying is almost 100% true.

actually i am opposed to any tax cuts for anyone, and that includes obama's thousand dollar rebate.  i know it's supposed to come from oil company profits, but we need to start balancing the budget and stop running deficits. we need to return to the tax rates under clinton, and that would involve me paying a little more.  the last few thousand of my income is at the 25% rate, and i think under clinton it was 28.  i would be happy to pay that.  and don't tell me to send a check if i enjoy paying taxes.  it has to apply to everyone.

It'd struck me (but I ducked) that Ruch and Co put liberals on trial in the national forum, in the late eighties. We were convicted without being able to call any witnesses for the defense or cross examine his witnesses. For various reasons, none of them healthy, the cons picked up on the verdict and methods of this kangaroo court and ran with it, to sucessfully convict liberals on a number of useful, from their point of view, things.

Which leads to today's wingnut surity that what ever sin a liberal can be accused of, is true.

Well is it true that the wealthy, who were helped most by the Bush tax cuts, will have a tax increase under Obama.  So the statement is not inaccurate since I assume Hugh Hewitt falls within that bracket and that's who Allen was speaking to.

This is what we often hear on the tv/ cable news these days; the media, being self-important, is only willing to consider a claim as a piece of propaganda, effective or not, rather than as a piece of information, true or untrue.  The media would like us to think on most subjects that PR and advertising techniques make reality--nothing else in the world counts, not scientific research, the scruples of philosophy, observation, experience, or of course the results which attend dumbass policies.  No, we all live in the world of Shirley MacLaine-style subjectivity, right? And matters is whether we believe in  delusions, illusions, foma, and granfalloons, thereby making them real!  Attitude is everything, and positivity, even that which is myopically devoted to ignoring all evidence to the contrary, is the only healthy state of mind.   The market will regulate itself!  Katrina was caused by poor choices made by residents of New Orleans ( remember James the Anabaptist in Candide?).  Low taxes will ensure that the government will remain solvent!  Debt is power and freedom!  Legal rights are proof of perfidiousness of our government!  and other such bs, on and on.   So much for the 'ideas' the cons brought in with them.  Further, who needs to raise my taxes to empty my pockets, now that I am simply forking most of my money over to businesses reaping record profits from the national apathy.  Carter was right about a national malaise: it is called the conservative movement, but it was the Dawn of the Dead.
