Jonah Goldberg: "Obama won't be able to take a shower without fear of" one of the Clintons "prepar[ing] to plunge the knife into his back"

SUMMARY: In a column comparing former President Bill Clinton and Sen. Hillary Clinton to fictional horror movie characters Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Dracula, Jonah Goldberg wrote of the Clintons' scheduled appearances at the Democratic National Convention: "Bill and Hillary are back. And forever more, Barack Obama won't be able to take a shower without fear of that curtain snapping back, as a woman -- or is that a man? -- prepares to plunge the knife into his back."

In his August 15 syndicated column, headlined "Nightmare on Dem Street," National Review Online editor-at-large Jonah Goldberg wrote of former President Bill Clinton and Sen. Hillary Clinton's appearances at the Democratic National Convention: "Bill and Hillary are back. And forever more, Barack Obama won't be able to take a shower without fear of that curtain snapping back, as a woman -- or is that a man? -- prepares to plunge the knife into his back."

Goldberg also compared the Clintons to fictional horror movie characters Freddy Krueger, Jason Voorhees, and Dracula, writing: "Freddy Krueger always comes back. Jason re-emerges from the pond one more time. Dracula had so many comebacks, nobody was surprised to see him hanging with Abbott and Costello." Additionally, Goldberg wrote: "If the monster-movie thing is too offensive for you Clinton voluptuaries out there, think of it like this: They're like Richard Gere in 'An Officer and a Gentleman' (who, coincidentally, is hounded by a charismatic black dude but never gives up)." He added:

They've got no place else to go. And I was right. The Clintons are back. The coffin lid has sprung open, the seal of the crypt has been broken, the mutant virus has escaped the lab. Both Clintons will speak at the Democratic convention, and Hillary will get her I-told-you-so's. In the horror flicks, it's not that the creatures are impervious to damage, it's that no matter how much you hack them up, they seem to come back again. And again. And again. The Clintons have been horribly damaged, but they press on.

As Media Matters for America has documented, Goldberg is not the first media figure to suggest the Clintons would use violence against Obama and other political opponents.

From Goldberg's August 15 column:

For months now people have been saying to me, "Do you really think they're gone?" "Is it finally over?" "Is the coast clear?"

The questions have been in response to Barack Obama's supposedly yeoman service in putting an end to the Clintons in public life.

My response to those who believe our long national nightmare is over has always been: "Have you seen no monster movies?"

Freddy Krueger always comes back. Jason re-emerges from the pond one more time. Dracula had so many comebacks, nobody was surprised to see him hanging with Abbott and Costello.

Of course the Clintons will be back.

If the monster-movie thing is too offensive for you Clinton voluptuaries out there, think of it like this: They're like Richard Gere in "An Officer and a Gentleman" (who, coincidentally, is hounded by a charismatic black dude but never gives up).

[...]

But fixating on the plot is never a good idea with monster flicks. The point is that the story is always the same.

And so it is this time as well. Bill and Hillary are back. And forever more, Barack Obama won't be able to take a shower without fear of that curtain snapping back, as a woman -- or is that a man? -- prepares to plunge the knife into his back.

Gosh, this may be news to MMFA, but I kind of think Goldberg was speaking figuratively, and not literally, but I could be wrong.  (eye roll)

Tommy, I think everyone, including MMFA, knows that these were instances of figurative speech. However, the repeated use of violent imagery by Republicans is a bit disturbing. Don't they know how to express themselves with a little more civility?

It's not that Media Matters is too ignorant to figure out that it was meant figuratively.

The reason Media Matters covered this is because it's conservative misinformation. Why is it conservative misinformation? Because it is not credible information when he says that Hillary and her supporters have such distaste for Obama that they would figuratively stab him in the back.

The evidence contradicts that false meme, but the righties keep pushing it. Hillary has repeatedly said that she'll support Obama. Bill has said that he'll support Obama. The PUMA group is almost certainly a facade for a pro-McCain group of people.

The Hillary hates Obama crapola furthers the conservative agenda of showing that Dems are less unified than they actually are.

You mean like how she hardly campaigned for him, how Bill make statements that sounded like Barack isnt ready, and how shes forcing herself for a vote at the DNC?

Nah, she wouldnt stab him in the back during the election process....they sure wouldnt do it during his presidency.

Wait to see what happens after the convention.

Also, it's the false framing that's the problem here. You can give an ulterior motive to everything she and Bill do, or you can give them the respect they deserve as lifelong dedicated and loyal Democrats and give their comments the respect they deserve. Besides being disingenuous about Monica Lewinsky, all the smears of Bill are unfounded.

I think respect is garnered more from their actions for the public they serve(d) than from loyalty to a party (I won't make the obvious historical references here- it should be obvious..).  Softening the word "lie" into "disingenuity" doesn't change the fact that it's a lie- i.e. "I did NOT have sex with that Lewinsky woman"...

but that aside, I think the bigger issue here is that the Clintons have turned this convention into being all about them. You will have definitely 2, perhaps 3 days of it being about the Clintons, with them taking center stage, a roll call vote to heap humiliation on Obama on exactly what was lost, and the generation of the percetption that it's the magnaimous nature of the Clintons that will allow him to be the party nominee.

Ask yourselves this- if Obama can't control the Clintons' narcissism within the context of his own nomination process and convention, how on earth do you ever expect him to deal with the likes of a brutal, hardened, killer steeped in the worst of the Cold War experience isuch as Vladimir Putin when the time comes- and it will come.

                  MissDee-

                  To summarize your 2 points:

                  1.  Lies are bad and the Clintons lie and then cover it up

                  2.  By including the Clintons in the DNC, it shows Obama can't handle Putin

Let's see...  8 years of lies and cover-ups from the current administration, and the last two weeks have PROVEN they can't handle Putin

Sounds like just case #4,156 of Republicans projecting their biggest weaknesses onto their opponents.

to summarize what you misrepresented in what I said... I responded to the diminishing of the term "lie" by refering to it as being "disingenuous".. period. It's the hallmark of the liberals to conflate any percieved "lie" right or wrong by a conservative voice into the biggest whooper since Nixon said "I am not a crook", but still be able to knock the hard edge off the same behavior in their own favored left.

second, I merely point out that if Obama can be intimidated into letting the CLintons (both) turn his nomination into their own Halelujah Chorus  (and making excuses for it iunder the label of "unity") in preparation for a 2012 run, how can you ever expect him to take any kind of firm hand with the ikes of Putin and other badasses in the world? Yeah, get a UN resolution against Russia when it needs a unanimous SC vote, and Russia and China are 2/5 of the council.  And even then we all know how effective the UN is at anything they undertake in terms of bringing about real solutions.....brilliant...  Oh, yeah... I forgot.. The Georgians are really at fault for wanting their territorial borders left alone.. right.. that's the solution.. Today Georgia, tomorrow the Ukraine? is that how it works? lol

speaking of playing ostrich...  did you ever come up with that quote that you claimed had obama saying that we could eliminate our dependence on "foreign oil" if we filled our tires and got a tuneup?   someone who wants to talk about not telling the truth should not being making up false quotes, don't you think?

Obviously transitive logic doesn't work on liberals.. this is how it goes...

We have enough oil in the ground andoffshore within the confines of the USA to equal that of what Saudi Arabia can provide for anything between 50 and 100 years. The argument for drilling is that is we tap that we can be independent of foreign oil. THis provides an independent cushion while we develop other renewable and reliable sources of energy. That is point a) .. remember it.. I know it's hard for you,  since it contains within it, more than one assertion, so maybe you should write it down.

point B is that Obama has clearly said that if everyone just inflated their tires (want to see the clip again in case your have overtaxed the few neurons you have that aren't programmed to tuning out facts?),  that would offset the need to drill, hence it is equivilent to independence from foreign oil.  I know math is tough for liberals but it's accepted that if A= B and B = C then A=C... got it?

Ha haaha! Boy, someone sure hit you with the stupid stick. There is 8 billion barrels off the east coast tops. Oil already has access to the 40 billion barrels in the gulf. West coast may have another 7 to 8 billion. Add it all up and it's nowhere near what Saudi Arabia has. If you're gonna say stupid things while ytou're playing ostrich with the facts, please, next time at least have the decency to try to make it sound logical?

sorry miss deeranged,  the quote you provided quoted him saying that if we properly inflated our tires and got tuneups, that would be the equivalent of the additional oil provided by opening up the areas now under discussion for offshore drilling.  that is nowhere near the amount we get from "foreign oil", which was what you originally claimed he said.

here's your original quote.  you claimed obama, as an argument against offshore drilling, said that if we inflated our tires and got tuneups, we would have "no dependence on foreign oil".  we get about 13 million or so barrels a day from foreign sources.  he never said that and you have provided no quote of him saying that.

"...Bill Clinton obsessed closet-case goblin Dick Morris' take on the topic; That Obama is caving in to Hillary, and if he can't stand up to Hillary, how is he going to take on the evil turrists?"

I only related this because I thought Dick Morris had accomplished the unbelievable task of finally underestimating the zombie Fox News base. I really thought he may have come up with a talking point that even the bottom rung Republopuppets would laugh at.

The onus is on me to go a-Googling to find evidence that his wild accusations are not true, to do the logical impossibility of proving a negative. This is the inferiority complex of the Neo-con, that all rules of logic are tilted to treat them like imbeciles. Nothing could be more gratifying.

Thank you,Noleft, I retract my "brain-damaged" comment. It was too mild. "Damaged" doesn't nearly describe the state of your brain. It's totaled.

What's your premise here, MissDee? That my noticing stupid people will cause stupid people to vote? That's interesting, but pretty stupid.

Have you come up with support for any of those things you've posted here yet (Obama claimed we'd be independent of foreign oil if we inflate our tires, liberals call W. a genius, etc) or is posting brand new nonsense taking up all of your time?

Actually, I think liberals called W a "genus," since he doesn't act like any sapient species we've studied so far.

Thank you.  We were wondering what you thought.

Not me. I'm still wondering if he thought.

The whole supposed divide between the Clintons and Obama is a myth perpetrated and propagated by the right and solidified by that great voice of reason, Rush Mushmouth and his Operation Chaos.

I actually saw an Operation Chaos bumper sticker on the car in front of me today. Too bad my car's still in such good shape.

I AM A AFRICAN AMERICAN WOMEN, now some of you may find the hillary and bill situation a JOKE, BUT as a black women I AM ON PIN'S AND NEEDLE'S, WHEN IT COME'S TO THE CLINTON'S.  I DO NOT TRUST THEM, when it come's to BARACK OBAMA,  I WOULD'NT PUT ANYTHING PASS THOSE TWO.  And yes, I THINK THEY PROBABLY HAVE A PLOT ORGANIZED, but my prayer, is that barack is ten step's ahead of the clinton's,  and not only the clinton's but, I pray that every other plan that is in process will not come to be,  So you see people, it's a joke to you, but the reality is barack obama is a black man, and black AMERICA IS ALWAY'S ON ALERT WHEN IT COME'S TO THIS BLACK MAN RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT OF UNITED STATE'S OF AMERICA.

I'm also wondering why either of the Clintons would be hanging out in Obama's shower.

      Is this an Onion satire?

Are you seriously suggesting that likening the persistence of the Clintons to un-killable horror movie fiends is out of bounds or that the allusion to the famous shower scene from Psycho used here might somehow be construed as a serious attempt to implant homicidal ambitions into the Clinton's minds?

I thought that MM was supposed to reflect a kind of ivy-league super-smart

'we are just va little smarter then anyone else in the room not to mention Jonah Goldberg' kindof vibe....not working here tho
