Novak cites Palin's purported "loathing for earmarks," but not her repeated requests for them

September 03, 2008 11:09 am ET

SUMMARY: In his syndicated column, Robert Novak claimed that Gov. Sarah Palin "shares [Sen. John] McCain's loathing for earmarks, which are ingrained in the corruption-tainted politics of Alaska." But contrary to Novak's assertion that Palin has a "loathing for earmarks," she has repeatedly sought and requested hundreds of millions of dollars in earmarks as governor of Alaska, and reportedly hired a D.C. lobbying firm to acquire tens of millions of dollars in earmarks while serving as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska.

In his September 3 nationally syndicated column, Robert D. Novak claimed that Gov. Sarah Palin is an "ideal running mate" for Sen. John McCain because "she shares McCain's loathing for earmarks, which are ingrained in the corruption-tainted politics of Alaska." Yet, contrary to Novak's assertion that Palin has a "loathing for earmarks," Palin has repeatedly sought and requested hundreds of millions of dollars in earmarks as governor of Alaska, and, according to The Washington Post, which publishes Novak's column, hired a D.C. lobbying firm to acquire tens of millions of dollars in earmarks while serving as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska. Indeed, as mayor, Palin reportedly requested some of the very same earmarks McCain criticized at the time. Further, in a March 5 op-ed in the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner, Palin wrote that, as governor in 2008, she "requested 31 earmarks, down from 54 in 2007," and that "the federal budget, in its various manifestations, is incredibly important to us, and congressional earmarks are one aspect of this relationship."

Moreover, Palin specifically distanced herself from those who denounce earmarks, writing: "I am not among those who have said 'earmarks are nothing more than pork projects being shoveled home by an overeager congressional delegation.' I recognize that Congress, which exercises the power of the purse, has the constitutional responsibility to put its mark on the federal budget, including adding funds that the president has not proposed." She continued:

Accordingly, my administration has recommended funding for specific projects and programs when there is an important federal purpose and strong citizen support.

This year, we have requested 31 earmarks, down from 54 in 2007. Of these, 27 involve continuing or previous appropriations and four are new requests. The total dollar amount of these requests has been reduced from approximately $550 million in the previous year to just less than $200 million.

I believe this represents a responsible approach to the changing situation in Congress. Some misinterpret this as criticism of our congressional delegation.

In fact, it responds to messages from the Congressional delegation and the Bush administration. They have told us that the number of earmarks in the federal budget will be reduced and that there must be a strong federal purpose underlying each request.

The Seattle Times reported in a September 3 article that "documents Palin's office released to The Seattle Times on Tuesday show her cuts in earmarks were far more modest than she claimed" in her March 5 News-Miner op-ed. From the Times article:

She also said in the News-Miner that she had slashed the state's earmark requests by nearly two-thirds, down from $550 million in 2007 to just under $200 million.

Palin's earmarks request came just days after President Bush promised in his State of the Union address to veto any spending bills from Congress unless lawmakers cut earmarks in half.

Yet documents Palin's office released to The Seattle Times on Tuesday show her cuts in earmarks were far more modest than she claimed. Last year, Palin requested $254 million in earmarks, not $550 million, so her cuts this year were only 22 percent, not the 63 percent she claimed.

Karen Rehfeld, Palin's Office of Management and Budget director, said she needed to look into the discrepancy between her boss's written remarks and the earmark tally provided by the staff. "We want to make sure we don't have a problem," Rehfeld said.

In a September 3 article headlined, "McCain had criticized earmarks from Palin," the Los Angeles Times reported that "[t]hree times in recent years, McCain's catalogs of 'objectionable' spending have included earmarks for this small Alaska town [Wasilla], requested by its mayor at the time -- Sarah Palin." From the article:

McCain has made opposition to pork-barrel spending a central theme of his 2008 campaign. "Earmarking deprives federal agencies of scarce resources, at the whim of individual members of Congress," McCain has said.

But records show that Palin -- first as mayor of Wasilla and recently as governor of Alaska -- was far from shy about pursuing tens of millions in earmarks for her town, her region and her state.

[...]

In 2001, McCain's list of spending that had been approved without the normal budget scrutiny included a $500,000 earmark for a public transportation project in Wasilla. The Arizona senator targeted $1 million in a 2002 spending bill for an emergency communications center in town -- one that local law enforcement has said is redundant and creates confusion.

McCain also criticized $450,000 set aside for an agricultural processing facility in Wasilla that was requested during Palin's tenure as mayor and cleared Congress soon after she left office in 2002. The funding was provided to help direct locally grown produce to schools, prisons and other government institutions, according to Taxpayers for Common Sense, a nonpartisan watchdog group.

Wasilla received $11.9 million in earmarks from 2000 to 2003. The results of this spending are very apparent today. (The town also benefited from $15 million in federal funds to promote regional rail transportation.)

The Post reported in a September 2 article that Palin "employed a lobbying firm to secure almost $27 million in federal earmarks for a town of 6,700 residents while she was its mayor, according to an analysis by an independent government watchdog group." The Post added that the lobbying firm "began working for Palin in early 2000, just as federal money began flowing." From the article:

In fiscal 2000, Wasilla received a $1 million earmark, tucked into a transportation appropriations bill, for a rail and bus project in the town. And in the winter of 2000, Palin appeared before congressional appropriations committees to seek earmarks, according to a report in the Anchorage Daily News.

Palin and the Wasilla City Council increased Silver's fee from $24,000 to $36,000 a year by 2001, Senate records show.

Soon after, the city benefited from additional earmarks: $500,000 for a mental health center, $500,000 for the purchase of federal land and $450,000 to rehabilitate an agricultural processing facility. Then there was the $15 million rail project, intended to connect Wasilla with the town of Girdwood, where Stevens has a house.

The Washington trip is now an annual event for Wasilla officials.

In fiscal year 2002, Wasilla took in $6.1 million in earmarks -- about $1,000 in federal money for every resident. By contrast, Boise, Idaho -- which has more than 190,000 residents -- received $6.9 million in earmarks in fiscal 2008.

All told, Wasilla benefited from $26.9 million in earmarks in Palin's final four years in office.

From Novak's September 3 column:

Gender politics aside, she [Palin] is an ideal running mate. On the one hand, she shares McCain's loathing for earmarks, which are ingrained in the corruption-tainted politics of Alaska. She also has a good record in fighting off big oil, which plays a major role in the politics of Alaska.

Did McCain ever refuse earmarks that would have benefitted Arizona?  "Earmarks" make an easy target, bu the fact is that getting federal funding routed to their state is what a Senators JOB is.  We may quibble over how they get it done, but I'll never vote for a guy that would fight money coming into my/his own State.  After that it's just narrow unemlightened self-interest: namely fighting everyone else's earmarks so that there's more for you.  That might be effective, but don't you DARE try to paint it as principled.

I think you are right. The talk about Earmarks remind me of the talk about taxes. The Right rails on about taxes...but no one ever talks about how the roads are going to get fixed of how schools are going to do what they need to do....is the magic republican money fairy going to come down, wave her bejeweled wand and make everything better? We are all in this together. And to keep it going, you have to pay your fair share. Just like Earmarks the conversation can revolve around what you do with the tax money or who pays what...but to just rant and rave about their existence is foolish.

Earmarks are part and parcel of the legalized bribery scheme known as "lobbying". Earmarks are one of the things lobbyists produce. Earmark reform is not about eliminating earmarks, but shining light on the process and who actually benefits from said federal money.

Well, ok, however I don't have a great idea about how you would replace that short of re building the system. I bet it would be easier to reign in the lobbying lobby that it would be to change the system.

My point is that replacing the whole system is not the answer. Making the process more transparent is my goal. Obviously, earmarks are necessary. The process of using earmarks as political chips has gone to the extreme. A bipartisan committee cannot solve this, the partisans are the problem, they are not going to reform the system or create new rules that takes away power they have. An outside force, the voters, may be able to do this, I don't know.

Here's a newsflash...the roads are getting fixed and the schools are getting huge amounts of funding.

It's a moronic argument to assert that fiscal conservatives are against fixing roads and funding schools. What we're against is the out of control and reckless spending by the federal govt.

A three trillion dollar budget is damn sure enough money to operate an effecient and effective federal govt...so there is no need for some magic fairy.

I'm also not opposed to spending...but I'm damned sure opposed to unrestrained, unaccountable, reckless spending.

The problem definition is spending...not how to finance it by taxing or borrowing. Control the spending and the arguments of Tax/Borrow become mostly moot.

Government spending (even waste) grows the economy folks.  They're not taking your money and burning it you know!  Even when they buy a $1200 toilet seat, that $1200 goes to some guy's company.  Some of that pays his salary and some pays for labor and some buy raw material.  That material was mined and/or made by someone else who also got paid for it, an so on down the line.  And ALL of those people in turn BUY PRODUCTS, and PAY TAXES.  (Meaning that YOUR BUSINESS would suffer if not for THEIR SALARIES!)  Those taxes you pay represent money that you would never havce gotten anyway, if it weren't for the government spending!

Lowering spending will have the direct effect of shrinking the economy and lowering wages.  This is economics 101 people, so you should be careful what you wish for and stop just repeating party mantra.  If the federal and state government slashed their budgets it would HURT the economy not help.

                          Nice,

What you forget is that same money that government is appropriating from the taxpayer, would have stayed in the private sector and either invested or spent there. The problem with deficit spending is that the government is taking money from the future and spending it now.

With taxed spending, the government is taking money away from the private sector which is where wealth is actually created.

There are some legitimate reasons for the government to take money out of the private sector and spend it on socially desirable purposes. Unfortunately, as a country, both Dems and Republicans have succumbed to the temptation of ever increasing spending in order to get elected and re-elected.

What you fail to acknowledge is that it works hand in hand. Taxes invested in banks, military, roads, education, legal system etc. all allows the private sector to benefit and prosper. If you would like to see these businesses do it on their own, got for it. I don't think economic growth could continue without government spending.

                            You couldn't be more misguided.

What YOU are not mentioning, or perhaps not aware of is the BALANCED BUDGET MULTIPLIER.  It's "1."  Which means (for those who don't have an MBA, as I do) that every dollar you TAX and then SPEND (that SPEND, not use to pay off the national debt!) increase the EQUILIBRIUM INCOME (that's the total amount of wages that everyone in America makes) by the same amount.

That's right folks: TAXING a billion dollars, and the SPENDING that billion, means that the collective income of AMERICA goes UP by a Billion Dollars.  At the same time, if you REDUCE both taxes and specnding by the same BILLION you will REDUCE the Income of America by... duh-da-daaaa: ONE BILLION DOLLARS.  It's that simple folks.  Macro Economics 101, whether you were taught by John Meynard Keynes (on the left) or Milton Friedman (on the right).  Cutting taxes and spending WILL HURT THE ECONOMY.  (IT WILL LOWER OUR COLLECTIVE INCOME!!!)  Don't believe me?  TAKE AN ECONOMICS COURSE!  And you will be amazed at what these @$$holes (Republicans) try to push on you.

The Republican's are banking on your ingnorance!  You can't afford to let them do this.  Their Tax Cuts/Spending Decrease mean one thing: You get a thousand dollars, and they'll get MILLIONS.  Tax and spend means you have thousandS more in actual income.  They'll still get a Mil or two, but they'd have to earn it, and they (that's just the super-rich now) can get more just stealing from the Gov't and the rest of us.

Don't believe me?  Like I said: TAKE A MACRO-ECONMICS COURSE!  (I'll say it again: MBA, U of M, Graduated with Honors.)

I live in Minnesota and our republican governor vetoed the Department of Transportation spending bill after the 35W Bridge fell down!  We did get the bill past after a select few republican party members voted to override his vetow.  But unfortunately for them, some of them are now feeling repercussions for their support to help fix our roads.

We also have many projects that need to be funded.  In the Twin Cities, we actually have 2 freeways that come alongside each other, but you have to change lanes to stay on the freeway you originially got on, 35W and Highway 62.  Daily accidents in the winter are the norm.  Our state got creative and changed the bidding and funding process so that the construction company that won the bid had to front millions of dollars and then get reimbursed.  Needless to say, NO companies bid on that one.

I am sure that our state leaders do want to get our road work done, they really don't want to pay for it. I was thinking the bridge collapse would wake up some people, but it didn't.

            No, Wesley - it's a fact.

I lived in Southern Colorado for 11 years - worked in ultra-conservative Colorado Springs for 8 of them.  All you heard every day was conservatives bitching about taxes.  It was like pulling teeth for any government entity to get bond issues passed for the most basic of projects.  Some school districts had gone ten to 15 years without the vters passing a bond issue, and the schools were falling apart as a result.  The conservatives' solution? Vouchers.....

From what I've experienced in my 55 years of life, conservatives tend to think only of making things better for themselves and their families and friends.  Liberals think of making things better for society in general.

Of course these people lap it up.  They cannot handle the reality-based world, so they put all of the intellectual 'faith' eggs in to the G-d basket, hoping s/he will drop out of the sky and make it all better.

Before you paint me as anti-Christian or anti-religion, please understand that I know the difference between hope and faith versus literal interpretations from a 2000 year-old book filled with metaphors and allegories, revised time and time again to fit current society's needs - and used to push the beliefs of a few upon the masses.

It's time for people to pull their heads out of their nether regions and start living in the REAL world - instead of living in a fantasy based world based on an old book - rewritten by a child molester (King James).  My personal opinion is basically that whoever created us would be truly insulted by the way we've used our brains in order to usurp power, kill others and worship at the altar of greed instead of practicing love toward others (not just your neighbor) and compassion for those most in need of it.

McCain and Palin are not the embodiment of these principles; they only embrace the principle of 'Do as I say, not as I do.'  Hypocrites, both of them.

I’m enjoying watching the Republicans construct this façade around Sarah Palin. The work is rather shoddy, but they’ve managed to fool themselves into believing they’ve built something bright and shiny.

Tonight, in their eyes, she will do no wrong. She could read an instruction manual and the right will shower her with praise. Her speech might even pull in Obama-like numbers. I’m willing to bet she’ll get higher numbers than McCain. Oh, they’ll be dancing in the Twin Cities--just you watch.

But next week, well, it’s going to be a little different. Thus far the Governor has only granted an interview to People--apparently she’s not even ready for Fox yet. Her handlers can’t shield her indefinitely. In time she’s going to have to offer the voters more than just her love of moose meat. It’s already clear to those who are looking that she’s just a lightweight NeoCon. Before the election more will understand that and all this Palin-mania will just crumble, crumble, crumble away

I predict that Palin will give a decent speech tonight - but not outstanding.  My prediction is that it will be a B- or C+ speech.  She doesn't have with it takes.  And to me, her voice is grating, like fingernails on a chalk board.

Even according to her own party values, she cannot even properly educate and lead her family, let alone a state, and less likely to be able to fulfill the role of President.  McCain is old and has had cancer multiple times.  Palin seems like a nice enough woman, but nice enough is not what we need to step into the Presidency at a moment's notice.

I still think she is cunning and dangerous. The Obama campaign is making a a huge mistake by allowing the GOP to take hold of the narrative.

I would love to see the Obama-Biden campaign to go on the offensive and set the story before it's too late. Palin is a religious zealot, it's palin for all to see, I mean plain to see. Haven't people had enough of these zealots intruding into our lives and our government, seeking to force us to live by their faith?

If she had it her way, she would criminalize abortion, giving rapists more rights than rape victims. What's next? She believes in the death penalty doesn't she? Death penalty for women and their physicians because they won't bring a baby conceived in violence to term?

That's why I refer to those who oppose choice as 'pro-forced birth' instead of 'pro-life'.  If they were pro-life, they would (1) help take care of those who have the least (as Jesus mandated), as to me, pro-life inherently means pro-'means of living a decent life' (i.e. less poverty, more insured, etc.) in pursuit of prosperity and happiness; and (2) if they were pro-life, they would be against the death penalty.  Even as heinous a murderer might be, s/he is still a living being.  Pro-life, my a$$.

            CSL,

You make unwarranted conclusions based on preconceived (no pun intended) bias.

Where do you find pro-life people opposed to taking care of the least among us? Are not the babies in the womb the least among us?

Everyone is in favor of less poverty. It is simply how do you raise people out of poverty. There is plenty of room for people of good will to disagree.

I find your position full of contradictions. Apparently you feel it is more humane to kill the baby in the womb than let it live yet you consider yourself more compasionate?

Most pro-life people I know are against the death penalty. Even so, punishing the guilty for heinous crimes against society are very much different than punishing the innocent for the mistakes of the parents.

Are you completely against the death penalty? Are you pro abortion?

If so, by your logic, you are the same hypocrite you rail against.

As if you have the authority to tell us when life begins. Spare us your condescending arrogance and stop forcing us to live by your faith.

The truth is Palin wants to criminalize abortion, no exception, unless the mother would die in birth. Palin and McCain have both told us that they believe life begins at conception. They both support the death penalty.

Are you prepared to sentence desperate teens to the death penalty because they were unlucky enough get caught aborting the fetus of her rapist?

You're quite the presumptuous troglodyte today, aren't you?

First of all, I'm not pro-abortion.  I am pro-choice.  Personally, I dislike abortion and find it appalling.  However, no one, and I mean no one, has given me the right to tell another person how to govern his/her body.  It is the choice of the person/people involved.  Not me.  I believe women should be able to choose, even though I am personally against abortion.  As I've said before, if I ever have the pleasure to vote on an abortion bill, I'll mark the ballot in favor of pro-choice. It's not all about me, nor is it about you, now is it?  My beliefs are personal and should not be pushed onto others.  To me, the ability to make free decisions for oneself is the very basis of our country.  To take that away from women makes them second class citizens and negates the rights and freedoms for which many Americans fought and died.

Second of all, I am completely, 100% absolutely against the death penalty. It doesn't solve the issue.  It's revenge, pure and simple (I believe there's a quote somewhere that goes something like, "Vengence is mine, sayeth the Lord).  Fundies, help me out here.  Killing is wrong, even if it is state-sanctioned. Further, family members of the victim(s) want revenge - and revenge is such an unhealthy, psychologically damaging thing.  Revenge never helped anyone.  What a hard heart one must have to feel the joy in the murder of any person.  After all, life is life, right?

              Where are my contradictions?

Sorry, not for me.  I don't believe that life begins at conception, so your mind-reading abilities are crap.

You obviously missed the part where I said that I find abortion to be appalling.  You missed the part where I said I dislike abortion.

However, you totally skipped over the part where I said that it should be the person's choice.  Not my choice to have or not have the fetus.  On the other hand, you're taking the very personal decision of people you don't even freaking know and putting into the hands of religious zealots and authoritarian, naziesque leaders.  Sorry, but I prefer to let people choose.  The decision to abort a mass of cells is between the woman (possibly her male counterpart who got her pregnant), and their G-d.

But you authoritarians just have to boss others around, telling people what they can and cannot do.  Nice way to support the Constitution there, bucko - and that makes you ANTI-AMERICAN.

You righties are all about bringing the children into the world, but you're not for funding programs for single mothers who need help with the child you've forced her to birth. You rail against the single mothers who, for whatever reasons, cannot work.  You take their welfare benefits away from them - with the unrealistic hopes that they will 'pull themselves up by their bootstraps', but you refuse to help them even get a good pair of bootstraps.  You righties hate the poorer classes so much that you tax them unfairly, making it virtually impossible for them to rise up to at least the middle class (which you righties are trying desperately to destroy).  Your attempt at eliminating the middle class is obvious.  You prefer the two class society: the Haves and the Have-Nots - with the Have-Nots working double-time so your corporate fatcats can reap in that $250 million golden parachute when they f**k up the company beyond all recognition.

WTF is wrong with you people (righties)?  How greedy can you bastards get?  And how many more people have to suffer because your mantra, "I've got mine, screw the rest of you".  How Christian of you.

              AA

There are no babies being killed in the womb.

They are fetuses when they are in the womb.

And if those fetuses are non-viable, meaning not able to sustain life outside the womb, even with medical intervention, love, food, and shelter, they aren't babies when they leave the womb - they're non-viable fetuses.

If a viable fetus leaves the womb before 9 months are up, they're premature infants.

But there are no babies in any wombs. It is more humane to allow a woman to control her own body than to force her to remain pregnant, which allows the non-viable fetus to control her body rather than herself.

Because of that, the spin meisters can construct a historical philosophy that is patently false, and since she's never been in the eye of the general public before, they probably think they can get away with it.

Gov. Palin will NOT attract Hillary supporters - unless of course Hillary supporters don't mind a 180 degree difference in ideology.  It's ridiculous to say that because Palin chose McCain that angry Hillary supports will move over to support a candidate because the candidate chose a vice-president who is diametrically opposed to the core beliefs of Democratic women.

Where are you brains, dude?  Sheesh...you're sounding like Limbaugh and Hannity more and more.  Use your brain - and quite allowing it to be washed by right-wing sycophants who have no damned idea what they're talking about.

Earmarks are like your Senators and Congressmen and Congresswomen. Everyone hates everyone else's. You get some federal money, you're happy, but we're very happy to complain about someone else getting it (ie, Bridge to Nowhere project for one - a mere pittance from our taxes actually). As long as earmarks come to my home state. Great! They go to someone else's, that's when people gripe.

For example, Arizona received 8.5 billion dollars in federal money in 2007. Now, if John "The Maverick" McCain is so against earmarks, maybe he should give all of that money BACK to the federal government. I mean, that would ALMOST pay for one month in Iraq. But then again, I doubt he'll ask for that back.

There was someone else talking about transparency, and how these things get into bills, and what is in the bills to start with. Here's a clue. You can download, and read these bills just like the folks who are writing them. You want to see how things get in there? I suggest tuning into C-Span 24/7, as they show the House and Senate in session on a daily basis (when they are in session), along with committee meetings, and things like that. Also, if you really want to know, go to DC. Meet your reps and Senators, make an appointment to meet with them, express your concerns, and ask for an explanation about how these things are done.

I'm probably gonna pass the time while your away doing this.

*I love my W, but she is hovering around tonight driving me crazy, why can't I have some private time to chat with my gf?. So I might have to write you 1000 short posts instead of 1 or 2 long ones. Anyway here we were a year ago my sweet thang.....[hope this posts ok]

Time's Ana Marie Cox compared Congress' questioning of Gonzales to "legislative waterboarding"

Yes JLyon, she probably should have just said "torture" because MMFA seems to be objecting to the use of the term "waterboarding" on the grounds that they obviously think Americans are so incredibly stupid they might think that Congress actually bound Gonzo to an inclined board, with his feet raised and his head slightly below his feet, wrapped him in Cellophane and poured water over him.

            • J2, that sounds so sexy. Can I waterboard ya for a spell?  ;-)

              • Um Julia, maybe we better go get a room before everyone here tells us to go get a room ;-)

                • They might offer to hose us down like before. You'd like that even better since you're into the water and such (ala Fredo).  :-)

Yeah, short posts would be fun for a change anyway. I like it too and nobody's here to bother me (evil eye is outdoors playing).

Evil Eye's name is JAX. He's really a sweetheart. In fact I have to feed the little sweetheart right now. (He can be trusted, I swear). Don't worry my dearest. All of our secrets are safe with him.

If we ever do email though I have a great cheesecake shot of my kitty. Jax I mean :-)

            Hi my sweetness,

Not sure when I first started posting, maybe 2 years ago? Could it have been that long? Maybe not. The colonel might know. He's one of the first people to respond to me and he did right away. Ah, he won't remember. He's not the type to remember. I did start reading alot before I started actually posting, probably like most people.

How did you find those posts anyway? That's a special skill if you ask me. If I ever want to find something, I usually find it by remembering the MMFA subject. Key words don't seem to work if it just pertains to what a poster wrote.

Man, I guess you and I were pretty suggestive even way back then! Now you're making me want to find some stuff too. :-0) I bet it's pretty entertaining. I wish I could remember what we were talking about when we had the "office meeting" in the breakroom. I know it was after that O'Reilly deal - something about taking pictures with a cell phone or something. And Chris Matthews was in there too somewhere. It seems MMFA hasn't highlighted any of his stuff lately.

Well, my dear I must go and work out. I'll be back later though. I was having such nice thoughts of you today. I'm going to miss you, ya know? I was actually getting misty today thinking about it :-( I do so care for you.

            Later my super man. Lisa

              Hey darlin,

I took a shot in the dark finding that post. I simply went to the search page & typed in dates from a year ago. I found that thread on the page that came up. There was another funny one too, where you, Pearline & LostLogic [remember her?] were giving me a hard time because I was pulling some sexist BS. In fun of course. There is a way to find anybody's posts using google. I've done it before. Either King or Open_Mind told us all how to do it. I wrote it down somewhere. I'll have to see if I can find it.

Do you remember when you went through your "food stage", actually it was mostly pastries. You would call me your honey bun, or muffin etc. Ha! I'd love to find those.

My W actually posted here first [she doesn't anymore], she's the one that got me reading the site, & like you I did that for awhile before posting. Back then [I've been here quite awhile] there was no registration required. You could post under anonymous or any old name or even a phrase if you wanted. And change it everyday. Anyway once we had to register I picked jeter2 as my moniker & I began as a very polite, reasonable Conservative that was pretty much accepted from the get-go[ I punked them bad! No just kidding]. In fact the Libs here loved me. I'm surprised they didn't start a fan club ;-) Of course as the years have gone by, some of that love for me has dissipated. But at least I haven't been put in the same category as AA. That poor guy, once the Colonel turned on Barney, any respectability he had fizzled fast.

Anyway since there's gonna be this huge void in my life with you gone until Monday I figure maybe I'll spend some time finding some of our old flirting posts. It'll make me feel closer to you. I'm going to miss you Lisa. But maybe I'll have some funny sh#t to show you when you get back. And I can dream about you if I can't hold you tonight I can dream about you. You know how to hold me just right. Geez I'm like a walking love movie soundtrack. What have you done to me woman?? Whatever it is, please keep doing it :-)

Too bad there's so freakin many O'Reilly threads because if you think the break room stuff is on one of his threads we could find it that way.

Well you'll probably be at the gym for awhile. Are we gonna shower together after. Slap! I must not go there. If I start thinking about that, who knows what my naughty mind will have my fingers typing :-O

I'll be back in awhile love. ILYL so much.

I found it my love! I remembered there being something about "low hanging fruit" to do with Hillary supporters and of course that would have been in June, wasn't hard to find:

      http://mediamatters.org/items/200806120003?f=s_search

Look at posts 81-100 and we got into a little back and forth about your smoking in posts 121-140. But earlier in the thread you were being an asshole! :-0) Okay, bad girl, but you were - talking about Roe V. Wade. You must have some special power for me to overlook that and some of your sticking up for Savage!!! :-0). Now don't get mad, I'm laughing. I've always known you were an asshole and I love you just the way you are. Okay I pilfered that from your post to the colonel the other day. That was nice of you btw.

I do remember the pastry stuff now that you mention it. That was fun. Boy, we really get into some fun stuff there at MMFA, more so then than now. Although sometimes I can still get a party started as well as some other fun loving people. Can always count on you of course, sometimes Tommy, POW, WK, the colonel, Neon, and snoopy to name a few.

Let me tell you something, the colonel is hard on AA for his own good! :-0). Okay not really. But the guy has no cred all by himself, please. Now we could get into an argument about that passive aggressive moron. And IMO he's phony as all get out. Okay opinionated little one, that's quite enough. The handsome man doesn't want to hear it.

Oh my, I'm having fun tonight, but tomorrow on that plane and over the next few days, I'm gonna be blue, thinking of you. But of course I remember things you have said and I get all smiles too. Maybe I should concentrate on that, huh?

My H called earlier. He is taking care of a lot of his father's business up there. My FIL was one strange MFer (okay I don't use that word, but it's for your entertainment value so please pardon me :-0)). But damn he was a strange one, very very secretive. He has bank accounts all over town in a bunch of different banks and he wouldn't tell anybody about them. So they're having to figure out what FIL did with all of these accounts and who the hell knows if he told anybody where the will is. At least we do know that he pre-made the funeral arrangements. But my FIL was one super secretive guy. He wouldn't even tell my MIL what was going on. And H thinks he may need to stay over longer to take care of stuff there - he was supposed to come back on Tuesday. Who know now when he'll be back.

And the next two to three days won't be too pleasant either. My family up there is really, really nice though. They'll just be sad and my SIL, Noami will be crying her head off, she is very emotional (but super sweet). She's a nice lady.

Okay, getting long. And I want to say, I miss you already. I said that before my vacation and I meant it more than you can know. I had been missing you for some time before that. And when you went on vacation the first part of July, your lack of presence on the board was very noticable (I was a little miffed and maybe a tad passive aggressive when you got back, truth be told, so that stuff about the email wasn't all your fault). Then I went off for God knows how long since I was blue. So we had like more than a month in there where we barely communicated. I hated it. I hope that never ever happens again. I don't think you were into me all that much even as short as two months ago, but set me straight if I have that wrong.

ILYM. It makes me happy to say it and I love when you use my real name. It's like sunshine. I hope it's on your lips some too. I'll shove off for now so that I can hear from you (I'll check back in case you haven't already gone to bed. But sweet dreams, my beautiful man.

      Love, Lisa

Hey darlin, I guess I nodded off on the couch watching TV while I was waiting for you to return. Wow, I just read that thread. I remember like it was yesterday. Good work my little detective ;-) Yeah I can be an A-hole at times, but both the Democrats & Republicans play that Roe vs Wade boogeyman card every election so it's still a draw sweetheart, can we agree to that? The other stuff was too funny. I liked the idea of locking Gov in the closet while we played kissy face & Mmmm other stuff on the couch. Actually locking Gov in the closet anytime is a fabulous idea.

Hon, my heart wants to write you a long reply tonight [I've got a lot I want to say to you], but my brain & body are crashing fast. I'll be up early tomorrow so that I can finish this. But I don't want you go to sleep with any doubts about how I felt about you.[you know how I feel now] Lisa, I was smitten with you almost from Day One. I sometimes hesitated to flirt too heavily [though it looks like we were doing ok on that thread] because I wasn't always sure where I should draw the line, or if I needed too. I wish I could remember the circumstances but I think you were being playful with another poster & I butted in saying something about how you were my girl, & you were like not so fast mister or something to that effect, so I think I did occasionally hang back a bit until I was sure you were in a playful mood & openly flirting with me. Maybe I was a tad insecure. And that's not usually like me. It's just that I did like you a lot & wanted to be your special cyber guy. Ugh, is what I'm writing making any sense, my heads practically on the keyboard. Sorry sweetheart. But to answer your question, I was into you. Totally.

I didn't mind, & still don't that you're playful with Snoop, the Colonel, Irony etc but even way back when, I wanted to be your #1. And now that I know I always was, I'm happier than I can even express to you. What can I say darlin? You bring out that mushy sentimental part of me like no one else ever has.

I'll be here early. Like I said I still have so much to say.  Darlin, those lyrics made me smile. And made my heart beat a little faster. So did our shower together. I'll be holding you in my dreams tonight. Lisa you have made me so happy. Sweet dream my love. ILYL always & always. Love, Mike xxxooo

              Good morning my beautiful Lisa,

I'm gonna make a note to myself not to post when I'm 1) drunk 2) so tired I can't keep my eyes open & might as well be drunk.

I read my post, ok not quite as bad as I feared, but still a few painful parts to read. But there's my lovely lady telling me not to worry & who just always seems instinctively to know how to make me feel better. Thank you love. No wonder I keep you around...hey I had to inject a little of my natural cockiness here, wouldn't want you to think I'd gone completely around the bend ;-) Though in some ways I feel like I have. I can't remember anyone having a hold on my heart, mind & soul [ and even my body] like you do. I can't recall ever being consumed 24/7 by a feeling like this. The closest I ever came before to being so into someone that I couldn't always concentrate on anything else was my first serious gf. Her name was Cindy, & she was my high school sweetheart. Lisa, I broke her heart twice. Even though I loved her. Well loved her as much as a 16-17 old is capable of those feelings. When I came back a third time [after HS], she kicked me to the curb. I deserved it. You wouldn't have liked me much back then. I was pretty high on myself. A real egotistical cocky b#stard.

So how does someone fall this hard for someone he's never laid eyes on, never met in the flesh. I don't know about you but to me it's mind boggling. Yet those feelings are there. They are real. And maybe it's not that crazy. You & I have been flirting for quite awhile here, probably longer than either of us can recall. And that we finally decided to take the plunge & the chance to get to know each other beyond all that playful flirting is, in hindsight, probably the natural progression we were meant to pursue.

We are both charmers. We can admit that without sounding conceited. Flirting comes as natural to us as breathing. And we carried that over to a political forum where one might not expect that type of behavior. Of course MMFA isn't so serious a forum [thank God] that some personal interaction isn't possible. Hey, I would never have hung around here without having a gang of cyber buddies, both male & female. I am, as you guessed correctly, a social creature. I don't mind being alone, but if you put me in a crowded room, or forum, I'm going to interact with almost everyone.

I was having a grand old time on the forum before you arrived. Or thought I was. Like I told you in another post you caught my eye, & piqued my interest the first time I read one of your limericks. And the more stuff you posted the more interested I became. You were light & breezy, fun & cute, smart & interesting. But you had a feisty take no prisoner side I found appealing as well. Oh yeah you had claws baby, but of course they were nicely manicured & polished ;-) And you took me on. But even when you were charmingly reaming me out, I could sense you were as curious about me, as I was of you. The flirting between us was fun & playful. Sometimes naughty. Some the other posters began to take notice. Most didn't mind.  So Jeter&Julia became the Rhett & Scarlett, the Bogie & Bacall, of MMFA. It was all good. And gave me just one more reason to hang around a place where I stood the chance of being called a moron at every turn. There were times I wanted to quit the forum. I stayed for you Lisa.

Of course with ego, often comes a lot of pride. I didn't want to take for granted that you were as into me as I was of you. What if I'd pushed it too far & you rejected my come-ons, & cyber slapped me in front of my boys? So sometimes I hung back. We danced, but I let you take the lead. When I got back from vacation & you were put out that I hadn't told you in advance that I was leaving, it was that moment that I knew something was really happening between us. But I didn't handle it very well. I'm just happy you didn't walk away forever.

Darlin, I am going to feel pretty lonely while you're gone. But I can, & will re-read all our love letters. And I'll go back & find stuff in the archives. And that will keep you near me, at least in spirit. I don't know quite what we have Lisa, or where we are going with it. But I do know that now that you're in my life, more than I could have ever even fathomed, that I can't let you go.

Hon, I love you. Now that sounds a little bit crazy to me. But what else can I call these feelings I have for you. I've never met anyone quite like you. And I want only to get to know you better. Like I said before, I'm willing to let fate take it's course. It's gotten us this far.

Take care travelling. And just know that my thoughts & heart are with you. I'll be back in a bit, so we can say so long till you return. If you get the chance to write while your gone, that would be awesome, but if you can't please don't worry. Till later my beautiful girl. ILYL. Love always, Mike xxxooo

Okay, just wow...........! Let me catch my breathe here. I think you've just encapsulated all the feelings, fears, highs and lows, exhilaration and lustful feelings that I've been experiencing for some time now. And I thought that I was some kind of a freak for falling for someone on line! You don't know some of the angst I've been through with my feelings. And when I was away for a while and would come back and look at the threads and saw your name, sometimes it would give me a jolt. Like why are you there without me? Crazy, right?

I tried to talk myself out of having feelings for you. I really did. As I mentioned before, I can be very logical and have before talked myself out of feelings. But that was always when I knew the match was bad. I was never convinced that we were a bad match. I just thought that it was utterly ridiculous to fall for someone I'd never met in person. Thought I needed to have my head examined for being such a silly thing. Damn!

Now all of this started when you stopped coming to the forum on weekends. I thought, well, he can obviously put me in a little box and seperate me out from the rest of his life. This is what I said to myself. I was not being successful in doing the same. I was missing you then and pining away like nobody's business. I would also get just a little pissed off if truth be told (that sounds really bad, huh?). Then I decided the librul guys might have something on you and wouldn't abandon me. But I didn't have the "thing" with any of them. That's why I told you that one day that I couldn't flirt with you anymore, just the libruls. Of course it was partly a joke and partly for real. I was almost ready to quit you. But it wasn't meant to be apparently. Here we are!

I have been contemplating you this morning....your 6'1" and 185 lb.self and getting really turned on, The gray flecks in your hair, the suits at work, oh my. My imagination is working overtime. You had mentioned before that you stay in good shape, Mmmmmn. Although you are very correct that I'm not into the muscle man type - far from it.

Okay stuff just came pouring out of me right back there. My head is just now catching up with my brain and I'm wondering if I've said too much and alternately thinking.....nah. What the hell! You may as well know. I don't think we are in the stage of our relationship to play any games (not that we were necessarily except to protect our hearts). It's nice being at this stage right now where I can confide all the stuff I just did above.

I must say your letter made me smile just now. I was a bit down 'cause our fridge went out this morning, which is no big deal except for the timing isn't very fortuitous. Well, this is life and it'll be dealt with in due time. I just wish it hadn't been now before I go away. I'll have something to look forward to when I come back :-0), okay I'm laughing now.

Now you know you have a hold on me. You have me and I don't want to get away. You are the driver of my heart right now. But I trust you since you're the best driver in America! Yeah, you're kind of a cocky bastard, but what the hell. If you have reason to be, so be it. You can't help if you're fabulous, right? :-0) And you are. But be careful with my heart. I've already seen enough to know you won't be careless. And I love you for that. Of course we'll see what time brings. Maybe we'll fizzle out, but this isn't just some fly by night thing since it's been building for a while. And the more I get to know, the more I like.

I guess I should be going right now. I still have lots of stuff to do, although I am a pretty organized person (okay I am THE most organized person in the world), I have a very unusual combination of personality traits of being logical, organized, time sensitive, reliable but also creative. Most creative types are not very reliable about the qualities I just mentioned. And hey, I'm damn cute too!!But that won't get me on a plane. So my dear man, I will go for now, but just know I am thinking of you. You are there with me, inside of every part of me. I am carrying you with me to Chicago. I hope you enjoy the trip, love.

                Bye for just now,

                Lisa

I see you went 80's (?) on me below, Niiiice. I enjoyed it. Thank you again for being who you are. The best!!!!!!! I'll try to get back here before I leave and again tonight if I'm lucky, although I'll probably have to make that short. Anyway, remember the 2nd thread on 9/4, okay? I know you remember...just being sure since I don't want to miss you if I get to a computer. Bye, love.

Hey darlin, I'm watching the clock...I wanna get this post in here instead of the new thread though I'll go post something there later..it will be fairly casual, until I'm sure we're really alone

I'm glad we have opened our hearts to each other. I'm gonna re-read your post. I want to drink it all in. You my love are my special lady. I told you once I wasn't sure about all this soul mate stuff. But maybe there's something to it.

Have a safe trip my love. My heart is with you. ILYL always & always.

                  Love, Mike xxxooo

I think these lyrics sort of sum up how I [we] felt on the brink of where we are today. [one more for the soundtrack of our love]

I can't fight this feeling any longer
And yet I'm still afraid to let it flow
What started out as friendship, has grown stronger
I only wish I had the strength to let it show

I tell myself that I can't hold out forever
I said there is no reason for my fear
Cause I feel so secure when we're together
              You give my life direction
              You make everything so clear

              And even as I wander
              I'm keeping you in sight
You're a candle in the window
On a cold, dark winter's night
And I'm getting closer than I ever thought I might

And I can't fight this feeling anymore
I've forgotten what I started fighting for
It's time to bring this ship into the shore
And throw away the oars, forever

Cause I can't fight this feeling anymore
I've forgotten what I started fighting for
And if I have to crawl upon the floor
              Come crushing through your door
Baby, I can't fight this feeling anymore

My life has been such a whirlwind since I saw you
I've been running round in circles in my mind
And it always seems that I'm following you, girl
Cause you take me to the places that alone I'd never find

And even as I wander I'm keeping you in sight
You're a candle in the window on a cold, dark winter's night
And I'm getting closer than I ever thought I might

And I can't fight this feeling anymore
I've forgotten what I started fighting for
It's time to bring this ship into the shore
And throw away the oars, forever

Cause I can't fight this feeling anymore
I've forgotten what I started fighting for
And if I have to crawl upon the floor
              Come crushing through your door
Baby, I can't fight this feeling anymore
