Without refuting it, AP, Bloomberg report Palin accusation that Obama "wants to raise" taxes

September 04, 2008 2:03 pm ET

SUMMARY: In reports on Gov. Sarah Palin's acceptance speech at the RNC, the AP and Bloomberg both reported her accusation that Sen. Barack Obama "wants to raise taxes," without noting that, in fact, Obama has proposed cutting taxes for low- and middle-income families and raising them only on households earning more than $250,000 per year.

On September 4, both the Associated Press and Bloomberg uncritically reported Gov. Sarah Palin's assertion in her September 3 acceptance speech at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, that Sen. Barack Obama wants to raise taxes. Both articles quoted Palin's assertion that "taxes are too high. [Obama] wants to raise them." Neither noted that, in fact, Obama has proposed cutting taxes for low- and middle-income families and raising taxes only on households earning more than $250,000 per year. Nor did either note that McCain's own chief economic adviser, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, has reportedly said it is inaccurate to say that "Barack Obama raises taxes," as Media Matters for America has repeatedly noted.

The Tax Policy Center has analyzed Obama's and Sen. John McCain's tax proposals and concluded that "Obama would give larger tax cuts to low- and moderate-income households and pay some of the cost by raising taxes on high-income taxpayers. In contrast, McCain would cut taxes across the board and give the biggest cuts to the highest-income households."

From the September 4 AP article:

The No. 2 on the GOP ticket clearly impressed the party faithful Wednesday as she smoothly moved from lavishing praise on McCain -- "a true profile in courage" who has "determination, resolve, and sheer guts" -- to throwing punches at Democratic rival Barack Obama.

"Victory in Iraq is finally in sight. He wants to forfeit," Palin said in her vice presidential acceptance speech. "Government is too big. He wants to grow it. Congress spends too much. He promises more. Taxes are too high. He wants to raise them."

Even as controversy swirled around the Alaska governor, there was little doubt that loyalists loved this mother of five, churchgoer, abortion opponent and moose hunter. They erupted at every mention of her name before she took the stage. And they gave her a thunderous welcome when she emerged.

From the September 4 Bloomberg article:

The next presidential administration will have to grapple with challenges such as taxes, reining in federal spending and the loss of manufacturing jobs abroad.

"Taxes are too high," Palin said in her acceptance speech last night at the Republican National Convention in St. Paul, Minnesota, and Democratic nominee Barack Obama "wants to raise them."

      Keep it coming.

And we still have no clue as what Palin's Plan is going to be, considering that one of the main POE is the fact that's she's one stroke from being POTUS.

Hopefully, it will be; lower taxes, increase public education, provide better health care, offer free housing for deserving, rebuild infrastructure to higher technological standards, reduce the chances of unnecassary abortions, promote prayer in public schools, use American oil, fight terrorism wherever, stop genocide world-wide.

Doofus!!  You are right!!! KEEP IT COMING!!!  I AM the "middle class" and I say bring on the McCain tax cuts they are only bigger for the rich because they currently pay soo much more than the rest of us!!!  If we could for only one day and stop the handouts maybe those people would go get a job and for once in their life learn what hard work and actually "paying taxes" is all about. They would then be a lot less likely to hand over 30% of their income to their fellow slackers!!

Why aren't you whining about the cost of Bush's party dress that cost only $500 less than McCain's? You people are such whiners. I'll bet Pelosi has a couple expensive dresses and some expensive earings. You don't whine about that. I'll bet Mrs Obama has a couple expensive dresses, too.  Besides, I bet when you become independantly wealthy (like Mrs McCain is) you will buy extravigant items too. But, if O'bama wins the election that possibility won't happen, because he supports keeping the poor poor and not giving the middle class a source of escape. He only supports having them controlled and mediated by big government and it's handouts.

That's becaue you don't know what is happening in the world. Like a true liberal, you read only what you're told to read and know only what you're told to know. The dress cost $3K, Mrs Bush's dress cost $2.5K, not at all extravagent. Nancy Pelosi has a couple dresses that cost that much hanging in her closet. But, because Mrs McCain is a republican then she suddenly becomes a hypocrit even though SHE isn't the one claiming that O'bama is an elitist. You liberals seem to group everyone into one little box whenever it is most conveniant.

McCain's less than brilliant solution to health insurance issues is to offer a $5000 tax credit for health insurance.  But that is offset by changing employer offered health coverage into a taxable benefit added to one's income.  The claim is that the credit would offset the increase in reported wages however many analysts debate that this would be true and that the effect is highly varied across income levels.

My health insurance costs as much as my mortgage. The high cost is bad enough, but we've had a lot of claims, so I can't complain too much; at least I have insurance. What is worrisome is that I would not be able to buy insurance at any price if I lost my job. A lot of people find themselves in that situation, and I've seen nothing from the Republicans to address this problem.

But the Reps do have a plan for that, it's the same plan they have for everything- tax cuts!  They somehow seem to think that if they offer a tax credit against the cost of a health plan that you will now miraculously have the money to afford the health plan, even if the tax credit has no effect at all on your tax bill because you are already at the lowest rate you can be.

If being a POW entitles a person to our eternal gratitude and deference, no matter what, lets go out and find all former POWs and give them whatever they want. I wonder how many of them are homeless? Are you willing to pay higher taxes to house them? Hell, some of them may have become criminals.... do we pardon them?

                Nerzog,

The point is that it's up to the voters to decide for themselves whether McCain's service is relevant to their voting decision, for some it is, that is their perfect right; for you and others, it is not important.  What the Democrats running Obama's campaign, and Obama himself, have rightly decided, is to leave it alone.  Respect it, do not disrespect it, and do not make it some issue.  If McCain and his supporters want to run on it, so be it.  To argue it's relevance or dismiss, or diss it in some way, will not endear Obama to anyone on the fence.  He is smart enough to know this.

And what is YOUR reason, blondie? Do you have a reason to vote for whoever you vote for? Well, in the freedoms given to us by our forefathers, we can choose any dang reason we want to choose when we decide on who to vote for. We certainly don't need YOUR approval when making that decision. Personally, I think your reason is invalid...and I don't even know what your reason is. I just know you're a liberal so you can't possibly have a valid reason.

No, he'll be following the intent of the law as passed by the Republican controlled Congress and President Bush at the time.  They wrote the tax cuts in as temporary and they are responsible for them ending.  They are the ones ultimately responsible for any tax increases due to the law they wrote and passed.

I wonder how many lies McCain will tell tonight about taxes?...

It's kind of sad and pathetic that a military hero will just pander and disgrace himself.  But that's John McCain.  He's now part of the Rove team.

McCain ran that one commercial a few weeks ago where he said Obama was going to raise taxes on everyone making more than $41,000.  Just an outright lie.

This is a man who has completely lost his bearings and it's not likely the media will hold him accountable.

Careful! If you say "Lost his bearings" or anything which can denote confusion, or inattention, or forgetfulness..... that's AGISM!

We must respect the senile old coot.

Its just scary because Palin and McCain can stand up there and make as many claims as they want, as false as they are.

Many, many people turned in to hear Palin's big speech and they were treated to lie after lie from Guliani and Palin.  The uninformed vote as much as the people who are always searching for the truth.

But the debates are coming and this time there will be an opponent standing on stage that can actually call them out for lying.  Can't wait for October 2nd to watch Biden to roast Palin!

Sadly, the debates won't mean what you wish they will.  The groundwork has already been laid to present Palin as a perpetual victim of the media and the evil libs so any points Biden scores for being smart and articulate will be lost because he's a "big meanie beating up on the poor girl."  Unless she manages to say something so stupid or insulting that it can't be swept under the rug she has already won the debates.

This is how they play the game and to them it is just a game.

Moon, I have to agree with you on that, and also for another reason. I got into righty radio sometime after 9/11, just because I'd become fascinated with the neocon cult, and would tune in whenever I was on road trips for work, to hear how the propaganda worked.

After the 2004 debates, I recall turning on Rush Limbaugh and some other shows. I couldn't wait to hear how they excused W's laughable performance, or how they explained that the debates weren't important. I was ready to hear at least a little self-deprecating humor along with the spin, maybe some sheepish admission that maybe they'd backed the wrong guy.

What I heard was stunning-- George W. Bush (and Cheney)had kicked ass in the debates. All of the hosts and all of the callers seemed to be in agreement, and all of them seemed to be living in some universe where facts and logic and history didn't hold any weight at all.

I'll still watch the debates, and I'll still get some laughs, but since that time, I've started to talk to more conservatives I know in my life, and I've been posting and reading at this site and others where rightys dwell. And I'll remember that the far right fringe is completely immune to reality, and I'll just root for the (not quite gone) middle to see what's really happening.

The right wing conservative Associated Press, run by right wing Republican Liar Ron Fournier, among others, want Liar McCain-Liar Palin to get elected.  So does the rest of the corporatist conservative Republican Party controlled news media.
