Tribune's Silva repeated Palin claim that "Obama-Biden" Dems have attacked her family -- but didn't note complete lack of evidence

September 05, 2008 5:36 pm ET

SUMMARY: The Chicago Tribune's Mark Silva repeated Gov. Sarah Palin's claim that "the Obama-Biden Democrats have been vicious in their attacks directed toward ... my family," but gave no indication that he had challenged Republican aides to substantiate Palin's charge with examples of purported attacks. By contrast, while reporting the charge, NBC, ABC, and the AP all reported that when asked to provide examples of such attacks, Palin aides, the McCain campaign, and the RNC did not provide any.

In a September 4 post on Tribune Washington bureau blog The Swamp, Chicago Tribune White House correspondent Mark Silva repeated Gov. Sarah Palin's claim that "the Obama-Biden Democrats have been vicious in their attacks directed toward ... my family." But, unlike ABC News senior national correspondent Jake Tapper, NBC News deputy political director Mark Murray, and Associated Press writer Sarah Kugler, Silva gave no indication that he had challenged Republican aides to substantiate Palin's charge with examples of purported attacks. Tapper, Murray, and Kugler all reported that when asked to provide examples of such attacks, Palin aides, the McCain campaign, and the Republican National Committee did not provide any.

From Silva's blog post:

Democrats have criticized Palin for her pointed remarks about Obama, deriding his experience as a community organizer for isntance [sic]. But in a fundraising letter issued today, Palin maintained that "the Obama-Biden Democrats have been vicious in their attacks directed toward me, my family and John McCain. The misinformation and flat-out lies must be corrected."

She has "a big job cut out in front of me running for vice president,'' Palin said. "I intend to give this campaign all that I have to give, and I look forward to these 60-plus days on the trail. My family looks forward to this, we're up for it, we're excited about it."

By contrast, in a September 4 entry on his Political Punch blog, Tapper wrote, "I asked spokespeople of the McCain campaign and the Republican National Committee just which 'Obama/Biden Democrats' they're referring to. The response I got was that Obama spokesman Mark Bubriski erroneously attacked Palin as a supporter of Pat Buchanan. That's it. That's the evidence. An attack on Palin herself. In other words, they can't name one person affiliated with the Obama-Biden campaign who attacked the Palin family."

Similarly, in a September 4 post on MSNBC.com's First Read blog, Murray wrote: "Unless we're mistaken, neither Obama nor Biden nor the campaign has attacked Palin's family. ... Reached for comment about the charge, RNC spokesman Danny Diaz cited a comment Obama's Florida spokesman made noting (incorrectly, it seems) that Palin supported Pat Buchanan, whom Jews -- at least according to this spokesman -- have called a 'Nazi sympathizer.' Diaz didn't cite a single Obama or Biden charge against Palin's family."

Additionally, in a September 4 AP article, Kugler wrote that "Palin on Thursday blamed supporters of the Democratic presidential ticket for spreading 'misinformation and flat-out lies' about her and her family. But her spokeswoman said Obama's campaign was not responsible." From the article:

Republican vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin on Thursday blamed supporters of the Democratic presidential ticket for spreading "misinformation and flat-out lies" about her and her family.

But her spokeswoman said Obama's campaign was not responsible, even though a Palin fundraising letter named the Democratic ticket with the words: "the Obama-Biden Democrats have been vicious in their attacks directed toward me, my family and John McCain.

The Obama campaign has raised questions about Palin's qualifications based on her six years as mayor of Wasilla, Alaska, and less than two years as governor, but Obama himself has said her family should be off-limits. He also said he would fire any staffer who talks about it.

Palin spokeswoman Maria Comella said: "We appreciate the fact that he came out and condemned this kind of personal attack." Asked whether Palin thought Obama or his running mate, Delaware Sen. Joe Biden, were personally responsible for the attacks mentioned in the letter, Comella said, "No."

"The misinformation and flat-out lies must be corrected."

I agree, Sarah.  When are you going to correct them?

I don't think she will, not with her biggest admirers like Jeff Christie covering up her separatist affiliations by bringing up the Obama children and Jeremiah Wright.

If Wright is fair game, then I think we should look into Caribou Barbie's nutjob church. Maybe there's a video of her speaking in tongues out there.... wouldn't that be SPECIAL!

Not to mention that someone needs to see if she's friends with unrepentant terrorists who don't regret setting bombs

Well, her husband belongs to an organization that wants Alaska to secede from the Union. I think that trumps a peripheral acquaintance with a dried up old hippie radical (who apparently isn't very dangerous, since the Patriot Act Stormtroopers haven't arrested him)

I'm not sure Palin can say the media doesn't have any evidence on this story. I just saw it on CNN with Cambell Brown. The article below confirmed what Cambel Brown reported, that Palin and McCain both told the story to make it sound folksy, and at a profit to the state.

Story that Sarah Palin sold Alaska state jet on eBay is a campaign-trail tall tale

The folksy tale of how Gov. Sarah Palin saved Alaska millions by unloading the state jet on eBay is fast becoming a campaign fish-that-got-away tale.

Sen. John McCain not only repeated that story on the stump Friday to tout his Republican running mate, but added, "She made a profit, too."

The truth is that Palin couldn't find a buyer last year when she tried to peddle to plane on eBay - and lost the state money when she did sell it.

Palin's predecessor, Frank Murkowski, originally bought the 20-year-old Westwing II for the state of Alaska for $2.7 million. She listed it on eBay for $2.5 million.

When no offers came in, Palin hired a jet broker - Turbo North Aviation in Anchorage - which sold the jet for $2.1 million to an Alaska businessman.

"We handled the sale for the state of Alaska," jet broker Rob Heckmann told the Daily News. "The eBay thing didn't work out for them."

Twenty months ago, when Palin was running for governor, she pounded Murkowski relentlessly about the jet and called it an extravagance, even though he shared it with the state's Public Safety Department.

Heckmann said Palin isn't the first politician who has tried to sell a state plane on eBay.

the story about the plane is all over the place, the daily kos hardly had an exclusive on it.

the fact that gov. palin is under investigation, for abuse of office, by her state's legislature, should have been sufficient reason to not pick her as veep. but that assumes the republicans have any sense of ethics.

here's more of that vintage whine about how poor sarah palin's family is being treated.  columnist kathleen parker:  "were it not for the pain of a teenager who didn't deserve to be exposed and exploited..."

uh, wasn't it palin who took the job?  hasn't she had her family in front of every camera?  did anyone think that no notice would be taken of an obviously pregnant 17 year old?

It doesn't take an official spokesperson to spread personal attacks, and ones regarding Palin's personal life are all over sites like Salon and Huffington Post.

I don't recall any official Republican spokesperson spreading the smears about Obama but that didn't make them any less  effective.

Two can play the same game, it's just disingenuous to see the Democratic side claiming it isn't playing politics as usual.

P.S. Washinton Post columnist Sally Quinn said mothers who are in politics can never put their country first, a great way to appeal to the more than 70 percent of women who work outside the home

"It doesn't take an official spokesperson to spread personal attacks"

But it's OK to accuse an official spokesperson of spreading them without evidence?

"ones regarding Palin's personal life are all over sites like Salon and Huffington Post."

Salon and HuffPost are not the ones being accused of family attacks by Palin.

"I don't recall any official Republican spokesperson spreading the smears about Obama"

        That's funny.  I sure do.

Allow me to refresh your memory.

"Two can play the same game, it's just disingenuous to see the Democratic side claiming it isn't playing politics as usual."

Who exactly is making this claim?
