Declaring "Hell Freezes Over," Halperin falsely suggests Obama and McCain had both been unavailable to media

In a September 23 entry to his Time.com website, The Page, titled "Hell Freezes Over," Time magazine editor-at-large Mark Halperin wrote that both Sens. Barack Obama and John McCain will "take questions from their traveling press corps Tuesday afternoon." Contrary to Halperin's suggestion that the candidates have both made themselves unavailable to reporters, Obama held a press conference on September 19 regarding the economy, during which he fielded several questions from reporters. By contrast, more than a month has passed since McCain's last press conference on August 13, as reported by several media outlets.

      Good catch MMFA.

Note to the media, when questioning McCain, or particularly Palin, be deferential, please.

McCain and Palin are avoiding the tough questions at all costs. McCain is dangerous and Palin is clueless. Halpherin, please do your homework.

Heck, Obama just had another press conference! McCain on the other hand only does photo ops. No wonder that reporter asked him if he renamed his bus the no talk express.

There's no way a 72 year old can have the same amount of energy as a 47 or 48 year old.  If Obama turns up the heat on the campaign trail over this last month I see McCain having great difficulty keeping up.  Plus, when you're tired you make mistakes and maybe say things you shouldn't.  We'll see how this stretch run impacts McCain.

Exactly... I've been telling my wife I'm afraid McCain will stroke out. (No, that is not my wish.) He looks tired and miserable and you know deep down, even considering how much he wants to be President, it must chap his behind that Sarah Palin has eclipsed him in popularity. Without her his campaign would be as boring as watching Lawrence Welk reruns.

Except, McCain has staff running the campaign for him. He, and Palin, can go into a shell, come out and spew a few hate bites towards Obama and the press, and retreat.

They do it already and the press does not seem to mind. They just say/print whatever bilge his campaign staff can come up with.

Every politician should answer to the media (people).

Exactly.  And any politician who avoids the media as much as Gramps McCain and Caribou Barbie have been doing must have something to hide.

I would be more worried about this and its implications if the Press was doing its ^%@$'ing job. If they had been then we might not be in the mess we are in now and these ^%@$'ing press confrences would not be so life and death.

I prefer to think of the press corps as jellyfish since they have proven to be spineless.

Heard on NPR this morning that McCain answered questions from the press for the first time in 41 DAYS!

That's unacceptable.  For all intents and purposes, McCain and Obama are involved in a months-long job interview process.  Part of that process needs to be the free exchange of information, and the willingness of both of them to ANSWER QUESTIONS.

And that goes double for Caribou Barbie, a woman we know virtually nothing about...

"That's unacceptable"  No kidding.  And his "press conference" lasted all of 7 minutes.
