SUMMARY: The Washington Post uncritically quoted Sen. John McCain's claim during the final presidential debate that Sen. Joe Biden had "this cockamamie idea about dividing Iraq into three countries." In fact, Biden introduced a plan to "[m]aintain a unified Iraq by decentralizing it and giving Kurds, Shiites and Sunnis breathing room in their own regions."

In an October 16 Washington Post article, staff writers Michael D. Shear and Robert Barnes uncritically quoted Sen. John McCain's claim during the October 15 presidential debate that Sen. Joe Biden had "this cockamamie idea about dividing Iraq into three countries." Shear and Barnes did not point out -- as the Post's Michael Abramowitz noted in a "Live Fact Check" of the debate -- that McCain's claim is in fact false. As Media Matters for America has previously noted, Biden introduced a "five-point" plan to "[m]aintain a unified Iraq by decentralizing it and giving Kurds, Shiites and Sunnis breathing room in their own regions." Biden's plan also stated that "[t]he Iraqi constitution already provides for federalism" and that "[t]he central government would be responsible for common interests, like border security and the distribution of oil revenues."

From Shears and Barnes' October 16 article:

McCain said Biden is qualified "in many respects," but added that "he's been wrong on many foreign policy and national security issues, which is supposed to be his strength," and that he had "this cockamamie idea about dividing Iraq into three countries."

Whenever I hear John McCain misrepresent what Joe Biden proposed I wonder whether McCain thinks Florida, Arizona, California, Ohio, etc. are all separate countries.

No - he thinks they're all part of Czechoslovakia.  :-)

I wonder how long he's going to take to get acquainted with who's who in Iran and Iraq.

That reminds me of the time there were reports of looting in the Iraqi museums, and the reporter said that centuries of Iraqi culture had been lost.  Rush LImbaugh, in his brilliance, retorted "What iraqi culture?"

Dearest Julia, there's a bit more complexity to the situation (this is *not* a defense of McCain).  Czechoslovakia didn't change its name to the Czech Republic, it split into two nations: the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic (or Slovakia).

My personal interest in this is that I previously was 1/4 Czechoslovakian, now I am 1/4 Slovak.  (Grandmother on my father's side.  Albeit my Grandmother was actually born a Hungarian...grin)

You know, I'm starting to wonder who I can trust on national security nowadays...

Now, I know the WOT plays to Obama's favor in terms of the campaign and the election, but looking deeper than that, I don't know if he can keep this country safe from terrorist activity, especially with his desire for troop withdrawal on the basis of timelines and deadlines. McCain, I don't know if I can trust him either. I'll give him credit for ending this conflict with victory, but "when" and "what cost" are of concern to me.

We still haven't captured Osama bin Laden (unless Bush released him like Clinton did), and I seriously doubt we will within the next 3 weeks (and either outcome plays to Obama's favor). And I'm starting to wonder again America's gone back to letting it's guard down for another terrorist attack. ... and how long would we give the Obama and McCain administrations to prevent a terrorist attack if one were to happen some time after either took office?

I know - I know, we're supposed to talk about the economy...

DaWuss, that's a very strange and confusing bunch of words. It sounds like you're saying Clinton captured OBL and released him, and if Bush released him, we've captured him. Are you just being silly?

Maybe you can refresh our memories on how keeping troops in Iraq is preventing a terrorist attack in the U.S.....?

I keep forgetting... the turrists don't know how to read maps, so they'll have to follow our troops home to find us.

I think as long as we keep most of our heavy artillery focused on airport-bound taxis over there, we're "winning".

I heard that and thought where did Mccain get the idea it was Joe Biden ?  I thought it was Joe biden doing a hardball thing with Mathews saying it would just  like create three more palestine type states. I don't know who it is Mccain listens to ?

OT, and while I didn't post the link, COL. ( ;) ) it's always fun to see a mccain rally. If you go to rawstory.com and watch the video, I believe if you look real hard you can see Mrs. Dee!

Supporters of Sarah Palin attending a rally in St. Clairsville, OH on Sunday were not shy about displaying their racist attitudes and their ignorance about Barack Obama -- along with their very real fears and insecurities -- to al-Jazeera reporter Casey Kauffman.

One white-haired old lady said frankly to Kauffman, "I'm afraid if he wins, the blacks will take over." She then added more shrilly, "He's not a Christian! This is a Christian nation! What is our country going to end up like?"

Another woman stated, "Obama and his wife, I'm concerned that they could be anti-white, that he might hide that." A third suggested, "I don't like the fact that he thinks us white people are trash -- because we're not."

Come to think about it, the video that went along with this article is priceless. The racist overtones are quite stunning, dontcha know?

Aw, Snoop, just bustin yer balls a little. I know you don't deliberately post things without credit, I just know the wingnuts who try to pass of stuff as their own are dishonest enough to point out when you don't provide a link as cover.

And speaking of dishonest plagiarists, where's barney Fife been? Could his recent nuggets of dismissing any hint of racism from the right, and declaring the choice of Palin as "genius", have finally made even he himself aware that he's over the edge?

The wingnuts are hurting in this economy too. I've heard that some of the trolls paychecks have bounced. Maybe that's why they've been so quiet lately.

I think Barn's probably feeling a bit embarrassed since his posts a week or so ago stating that Obama had better be careful because this Ayers stuff will blow up in his face. It seems to have turned around and bit Gramps in his ass instead.

Self awareness isn't Barny's strong suit so don't hold your breath. It's more likely he got banned by abusing the privilege of flagging other posters too much. :-)
