Wash. Post uncritically reported McCain's attack on Obama for "wanting to raise taxes" on Americans like Joe the Plumber
SUMMARY: The Washington Post reported that Sen. John McCain "railed against [Sen. Barack] Obama for wanting to raise taxes" and uncritically quoted McCain's attack that Obama would raise taxes on Americans like "Joe the Plumber," a reference to Sam Joe Wurzelbacher. However, the Post did not point out that, according to Wurzelbacher himself, he would not be subject to a tax increase under Obama's proposal. Obama has proposed cutting taxes for low- and middle-income families and raising taxes only on households earning more that $250,000 per year.
In an October 17 Washington Post article, staff writers Dan Balz and Shailagh Murray reported that at a campaign rally in Philadelphia, Sen. John McCain "railed against [Sen. Barack] Obama for wanting to raise taxes." Balz and Murray also uncritically quoted McCain saying of the October 15 presidential debate: "The real winner last night was Joe the Plumber [Sam Joe Wurzelbacher]. Joe's the man. He won, and small businesses won across America. ... The American people are not going to let Senator Obama raise their taxes." But Balz and Murray did not point out that Obama has proposed cutting taxes for low- and middle-income families and raising taxes only on households earning more that $250,000 per year. Nor did they note that, according to what he recently told ABC News' Diane Sawyer, Wurzelbacher does not make $250,000 or more and therefore would not be subject to a tax increase under Obama's tax proposal. Balz and Murray also did not mention that Wurzelbacher also reportedly said he would not make more than $250,000 if he bought the business he has expressed interest in purchasing.
On the October 16 edition of ABC's Good Morning America, Sawyer asked Wurzelbacher: "[Y]ou're not taking home $250,000 now, am I right?" Wurzelbacher replied: "No. No, not even close." Sawyer then asked: "And you were you asking about the prospect, the hope, that someday you would make $250,000, and you were saying you didn't want that to be taxed?" Wurzelbacher responded: "Well, exactly. Exactly." Additionally, in an October 16 post on his blog, ABC News senior national correspondent Jake Tapper wrote that according to ABC News' Chris Bury, Wurzelbacher "acknowledged that he wants to purchase the plumbing business for $250-280,000, not that he would net that much in profits. He would make much less, he said."
Further, during an October 15 webcast, CBS Evening News host Katie Couric asked Wurzelbacher: "Well, [Obama] supposedly will raise taxes only on people who make over $250,000 a year. Would you be in that category?" Wurzelbacher responded: "Not right now at presently, but, you know, question -- so he's going to do that now for people who make $250,000 a year. When's he going to decide that $100,000 is too much? I mean, you know, you're on a slippery slope here. You vote on somebody who decides that $250,000 and you're rich? And $100,000 and you're rich? I mean, where does it end? You know, that's -- people got to ask that question."
Moreover, an October 16 MSNBC.com article reported that if Wurzelbacher buys the company for which he currently works, as he has said he hopes to do, "Obama's tax plan wouldn't affect him" because "Ohio business records show the company's estimated total annual revenue as only $100,000. Actual taxable income would be even less than that." From the article:
Wurzelbacher also acknowledged that he had no specific plans for buying Newell's business, saying he and Newell had simply talked about the idea from time to time. He might have difficulty making the purchase: Court records from his divorce show that Wurzelbacher made $40,000 in 2006.
Even if he did buy Newell Plumbing and Heating, Obama's tax plan wouldn't affect him. While Wurzelbacher told Obama that he would be taxed at a higher rate because the company grossed more than $250,000 a year, Ohio business records show the company's estimated total annual revenue as only $100,000. Actual taxable income would be even less than that.
In any event, Obama's tax plan specifies that the higher rate would apply only to income above the $250,000 threshold. Assuming Wurzelbacher's income as owner somehow hit $280,000 -- the top end of his supposition of the company's revenue -- only the extra $30,000 would be taxed at a higher rate.
From Balz and Murray's October 17 article:
McCain took his debate performance to the Philadelphia suburbs, where he talked about "Joe," the Ohio plumber who became the focal point of Thursday's debate. McCain railed against Obama for wanting to raise taxes, a mistake that he said would plunge the country from recession to depression.
"I thought I did pretty well," McCain said. "The real winner last night was Joe the Plumber. Joe's the man. He won, and small businesses won across America. ... The American people are not going to let Senator Obama raise their taxes."
[McCain senior adviser Steve] Schmidt said that Obama's comments to the Ohio plumber last week, in which the senator from Illinois said he wants to spread the wealth to more Americans, were "anathema" to the American people and set up a sharp contrast for the last weeks of campaigning. "Obama has every potential to tax and spend the country into a depression, and we will focus acutely on that," Schmidt said.

I can't believe McCain is dumb enough to continue using this Joe the Plumber schtick. Well actually I can. He's pretty dumb. Also can't believe they pulled out the ol "tax and spend" tag. Well actually I can. Republicans are pretty much one note campaigners. Happy retirement gramps. You'll be lucky if you can hold on to your Senate seat after the campaign you've run.
The media still acts like Joe the Plumber is real. Many pundits still feel sorry about his plight.
I am actually kinda tired of this joe the plumber thing. Turns out he owes past taxes and has a possible link to Keating. This plumber thing was also applied to G Gordon Liddy and the thugs that broke into the watergate complex and made themselves famous. They were also called " plumbers '.
"Obama has every potential to tax and spend the country into a depression" -- even if you replace "depression" with "recession", or even "downturn", that has never, ever happened.
Raising taxes on the rich doesn't hurt the country, doesn't hurt the economy, and doesn't hurt the rich.
The economy had started to soften during the last months of the Clinton administration in 2000, primarily because of the dot con bubble bursting and the effect that Y2K did not have on the economy. Can you tie that to tax increase? Probably not, just a cyclic thing that periodicly happens in our economy.
deregulating the housing industry under GW Bush's watch accelerated the process instead of slowing it down. I don't think Bush's appointees had the credentials to figure that out.
Appointees? Heh. That makes it sound like he weighed other options before 'appointing' his buddies from back home.
Joe the plumber, who:
1. owes $1400 in taxes because he doesn't pay on time
2. Has tax leins on his home
3. Has no plumbers license
4. Makes way less than $250K a year
5. Admitted he'd get a big tax break today under Obama's plan
6. Is related to charles Keating - can you say plant?
7. Has already spent more time in front of reporters than Palin has
8. May not get to vote legally because his name doesn't exactly match the voter rolls (thanks to the republican bill that tried to change how that works)
Any others?
6. Is related to charles Keating - can you say plant?
He's not related to Keating but I think he was a plant. The guy is a registered republican and he voted in the republican primary.
So I may have missed one. But not. from. ohio.

It is amazing you much information has been collected on this poor guy in just 24 hours. It is more investigative reporting than has been conducted on Mr. Obama in 24 months.
Moral of the story? Don't ever ask Obama a question or you might get attacked. Just the kind of, looking after the little guy, POTUS we need.
McCain made a speech today where he blamed Obama for outing Joe the Plumber.... Accused him of violating his privacy.
Say what? Is this a parallel universe or something?
I heard that, Carlile, and it was amazing. I guess the plan was to trot out Joe the Plumber with no follow-up questions, just complete & pure propaganda.
The other approach I've been hearing is that the Dems and the media are being "condescending" to Joe by pointing out that he doesn't make nearly enough to be worried about the things he's pretending to be worried about.
"Condescension" is a pretty easy charge to make for those who are completely deserving of condescension.
"Joe the plumber", whether you're a GOP puppet, or are confused all on your own, you deserve to be mocked. You're a completely confused knucklehead. If it was illegal to mock the intellectually lazy, there would be no incentive to think.
there is even an Alaska connection ( towards the end )

Joe the Plumber is the new Bill Ayers. Victim of hackneyed attack machine
I caught this on "The Early Show":

Know what I find amazing? Liberals keep getting called out as the ones to end freedom, but all I ever find in the news is republicans calling for mccarthy like investigations into anyone republicans don't think deserve equal rights. Why is that?

I think Obama (or McCain) should propose raising everybody's taxes 10%, that would put the top rate back at Clinton levels (or very close) and would still give everyone else a tax cut when the Bush tax cuts expire. And it wouldn't affect 40% of American Workers (per Dobbs from yesterday). Well, maybe it wouldn't affect 40% of potential taxpayers, not workers.
John McCain accused Obama of "attacking Joe the Plumber". What?
He accused Obama of making things difficult for Joe by interfering with his privacy.
I know I know-- It was McCain who publicized him. But what is truth? What is reality? And who cares, right?
they used the depression line when clinton raised taxes on the wealthy in his first term. didn't happen, we had a huge increase in the number of jobs created, even before the "dot com bubble". bush's job creation rate has been anemic, to say the least.
they still won't let go of the ayers stuff. i heard an ad today saying obama "worked for seven years" with him. presumably the time they were on the same board. obama or biden need to say that if they want to keep going that way, mccain can explain why he was on the radio show of, and accepted contributions from, a man who told his audience how best to shoot a federal agent to kill them. and back in the day, liddy also was involved in a plot, never carried out, to murder columnist jack anderson.
So after years of speculation, why did vicki wait until now to say something? What's little john hiding?
I did not have Sex with that Man!
By John Amato Friday Oct 17, 2008 5:00pmSo says VIcky Iseman about McCain. This will refresh your memory.
I wonder why she came out with this now?
Marcy says:
Attention members of the Mainstream Media:
There is no such thing as Joe the Plumber. Never was. It's a fictional construct, not a person you need feel sympathetic for. Those problems he has are nonexistent.
The American people know this, so why don't you?
That's one reason why they didn't like McCain at the debate. Not only that, even if he was real, nobody feels sorry for a guy whining about paying taxes on a salary they only wish they could earn every year.
Got it? There is no Joe the Plumber. You were hoodwinked. It's all a lie.
