LA Times, AP repeated McCain campaign misinformation about Obama's tax plan

October 24, 2008 12:34 pm ET

SUMMARY: The Los Angeles Times reported without challenge Sen. John McCain's claim that Sen. Barack Obama plans to "raise taxes on small businesses." In fact, the number of taxpayers declaring small business income who would see a tax increase in 2009 under Obama's plan is less than two percent, according to estimates by the Tax Policy Center. Additionally, the AP reported an RNC spokesman's claim that Obama "will raise taxes," without noting that Obama has proposed raising taxes only on individuals earning more than $200,000 per year and families earning more than $250,000 per year.

In an October 24 Los Angeles Times article, reporters Mark Z. Barabak and Bob Drogin reported without challenge Sen. John McCain's assertion that Sen. Barack Obama plans to "raise taxes on small businesses." In fact, the number of taxpayers declaring small business income who would see a tax increase in 2009 under Obama's plan is less than two percent, according to estimates by the Tax Policy Center (TPC).

Obama has proposed raising taxes only on individuals earning more than $200,000 per year and families earning more than $250,000 per year. According to estimates by the TPC, 1.9 percent of tax filers declaring small business income in 2009 will be in the top-two income-tax brackets -- which currently includes all individuals earning more than $160,850 and all families earning more than $195,850. The Times also did not mention that Obama has proposed tax cuts for small businesses, including the "Obama Small Business Health Tax Credit," a "refundable credit of up to 50 percent on premiums paid by small businesses on behalf of their employees."

Additionally, in an October 23 Associated Press article, reporter Mike Baker uncritically quoted Republican National Committee spokesman Alex Conant's claim that "[i]f Obama wins, he will raise taxes and our economy will go from a yellow to red flag." The article did not point out that Obama has proposed raising taxes only on people making more than $200,000 and families making more than $250,000, or that he has proposed cutting taxes for low- and middle-income taxpayers. McCain's own chief economic policy adviser, Douglas Holtz-Eakin, has reportedly said it is inaccurate to say that "Barack Obama raises taxes."

A separate October 24 Times article, published on the front page, detailed Obama's tax plans but did not address small businesses specifically:

For individuals earning more than $200,000 a year and couples earning more than $250,000, Obama would raise the top tax rates on income and capital gains by allowing the Bush-era tax cuts to expire.

He also has suggested raising the Social Security payroll tax on those upper-income people.

But for less affluent workers, Obama offers a variety of tax cuts. Some proposals -- including a $1,000 credit for everyone who is employed -- would benefit people who earn too little to owe income taxes. Under such a "refundable" tax break, people who have no tax liability to reduce would receive a cash rebate.

From Barabak and Drogin's October 24 Los Angeles Times article:

Responding to the latest government jobs report -- showing that 478,000 Americans claimed unemployment benefits last week -- McCain sounded like he was the Democrat bidding to replace the party in the White House.

"Barack Obama's only answer is to double-down on the Bush administration's legacy of out-of-control spending, raise taxes on small businesses, impose mandates on employers and raise trade barriers -- a time-proven recipe for turning tough economic times into terrible economic circumstances," McCain said in a written statement.

Obama campaigned in Indianapolis, where he teed off on remarks McCain made Wednesday expressing regret about U.S. jobs sent overseas but calling it "simple fundamental economics" for companies to seek a lower tax rate wherever they can.

From Baker's October 23 AP article:

"John McClain. John McClain. Excuse me, John McCain. John McCain -- I don't recognize him anymore," Biden said to laughter from several hundred supporters in attendance.

Republican National Committee spokesman Alex Conant said Biden was being loose with his rhetorical flourishes and offered a different NASCAR analogy: "If Obama wins, he will raise taxes and our economy will go from a yellow to red flag."

Thanks, LA Times & AP, for yet another article simply repeating falsehoods to confuse the "low information" voter. [sarcasm]

I heard something similar this morning on NPR with them quoting McCain about how Obama wanted to squeeze the middle class with his tax increases on people earning over $250k/year. I was talking to my wife about it, and I'd LOVE to be in THAT middle class making $250k/year. I'd pay an extra 3% for that.

Since Grampy is blanketing the country with his half truths, he has no complaint when Obama states that Grampy wants to stay in Iraq for 100 years.

As for this "huge" tax increase that Grampy claims will wreck the economy... I wonder if all those Joe the Idots out there have even stopped to think how much money they're talking about?  Even if Joe the F***ing Plumber wasn't lying when he said his business might net up to $300,000, his additional taxes under Obama's plan would be $1500.  Wow, can he stand it?  If he's a real business man, would $1500 stop him from hiring a new employee if he really needed one?  That's what they would have us believe.  Do they think we're that stupid?  (Apparently their base is)

Yeah, the "taxes kill jobs" argument not only doesn't reflect reality, it doesn't make any sense.  If laying off people saves money, those people are going to be laid off no matter what the tax rate is.  If hiring people makes money, those people will be hired no matter what the tax rate.

Business owners try to maximize their bottom line 100% of the time, in all administrations and all tax policies.

John McCain is making an excellent point about a Democrat controlled Capitol Hill, House and Oval Office. His point is, of course, being downplayed or deliberately ignored by America's “Mainstream Obama Media” along with, most concerning, Americans.

A Democrat controlled American government, especially a filibuster proof Congress is a threat to the founding principles of our America; Freedom and Democracy.

This threat to America is a clear violation of Checks and Balances. This is, a loss of Balance of Power. Having Democrats in control of our entire government structure leaves America bent over and a prime target for abuse.

As readers know, our Democratic party represents a "tax and spend" philosophy. Under Democratic control almost all know taxes will be raised for _all_ Americans, government spending will skyrocket and size of government will expand to set a new historical record.

Obama as president, Pelosi and Reid in charge with class clown Barny Frank running around, who I suspect is actually Buddy Hackett, with those four in charge our America will be in grave danger of swinging much too far to socialist left.

Another principle of Democrats is this party adamantly believes only they know what is best for Americans and adamantly believe they should make all decisions for Americans. More succinct, Americans will lose right of choice, will lose our right to decide what is best for us and our families.

Rather clear Republicans will be trashed in both Congress and the House. Should Obama be elected our country will begin a face paced walk down a path to socialism, down a path of becoming a welfare nation.

This path, this turn to socialism violates every founding principle of our America. Should these events come true, we can no longer claim America is based upon Freedom and Democracy and our Founding Fathers will certainly roll over in their graves.

Saddens me Americans are about to give Patrick Henry, death.
