SUMMARY: Michael Savage said Sen. Barack Obama "benefited from affirmative action, stepping over more qualified white men, I actually lost as a result of affirmative action, many times in my life. ... [W]e have America's first affirmative action candidate about to become president."

During the October 27 broadcast of his nationally syndicated radio show, Michael Savage said: "[Sen. Barack] Obama and I are on the opposite sides of the political spectrum, as you can well imagine. While he benefited from affirmative action, stepping over more qualified white men, I actually lost as a result of affirmative action, many times in my life. Although I'd get near 100s on certain exams, they put me at the back of the bus because they said -- the ACLU said -- certain people will have to put their futures on hold in order to let others advance, and take a look at where we are today -- we have America's first affirmative action candidate about to become president."

As Media Matters for America documented, Savage previously claimed that the Democratic presidential primary contest "is, or can be seen as, the first affirmative action election in American history," and added, "We have a woman and a multi-ethnic man running for office on the Democrat side. Is this not akin to an affirmative action election? Isn't that why the libs are hysterical, tripping over themselves to say amen and yes to this affirmative election vote?" Additionally, Media Matters has noted that Savage has previously called "civil rights" a "con" and has claimed that affirmative action stole his "birthright," and his "manhood."

Later in the October 27 broadcast, Savage said: "I think Obama is a dangerously deluded candidate. I think he is dangerously deluded because people have kissed his behind for his entire life. Being multiracial in Hawaii, the white liberals -- and I know them, I remember them -- the white liberals got on their hands and knees in front of him, and whatever he said, they agreed with. No one has ever challenged this man in his entire life."

Talk Radio Network, which syndicates Savage's show, claims that Savage is heard on more than 350 radio stations. The Savage Nation reaches at least 8.25 million listeners each week, according to Talkers Magazine, making it one of the most listened-to talk radio shows in the nation, behind only The Rush Limbaugh Show and The Sean Hannity Show.

From the October 27 broadcast of Talk Radio Network's The Savage Nation:

SAVAGE: Obama claims to have been poor, but he, unlike me, benefited from affirmative action, while I suffered from affirmative action. You see, Obama and I are on the opposite sides of the political spectrum, as you can well imagine. While he benefited from affirmative action, stepping over more qualified white men, I actually lost as a result of affirmative action, many times in my life. Although I'd get near 100s on certain exams, they put me at the back of the bus because they said -- the ACLU said -- certain people will have to put their futures on hold in order to let others advance, and take a look at where we are today -- we have America's first affirmative action candidate about to become president.

[...]

I think Obama is a dangerously deluded candidate. I think he is dangerously deluded because people have kissed his behind for his entire life. Being multiracial in Hawaii, the white liberals -- and I know them, I remember them -- the white liberals got on their hands and knees in front of him, and whatever he said, they agreed with. No one has ever challenged this man in his entire life. He sounds like an overly well-read student who was brainwashed by his professors first at ponaho -- Punahou, and then later on at Yale.

The white supremacist candidate once again showing his jealousy over "the first affirmative action candidate". Just because no wanted to support Savage, who wants to destroy the Constitution and replace it with a Savage Code of Laws.

Go ahead, John1234567890. Flag this comment as inappropriate and censure me once again: Michael Savage is a white supremacist pig and he probably enjoyed the news about the two piglets in Tennessee who wanted to murder Obama.

Supporter outside McCain rally chants 'bomb Obama'

A demonstrator outside a McCain rally in Pottsville, Pennsylvania on Monday could be hearing from the Secret Service after his statements were filmed by Keystone Progress Blog.

"Bomb Obama!" he said repeatedly. "Get rid of him," he told the cameraman. "I've had a number of people in the...when he gets in the White House...(mimicks the sound of a gun firing)." The exchange was reported to Pottsville police and the Secret Service. Pottsville Police Captain Richard Wojciechowsky reportedly said it "did not sound serious."

"I'd never vote for a black man," said a Democratic McCain supporter. "[I don't] want to sound racist here," said another participant, "but I do not want a black man running my country."

My wife and I volunteered to call voters in Central PA for Obama/Biden last weekend. My wife actually spoke to a woman who said the same thing about how she'd never vote for a black guy. The woman demanded my wife's name. She said she was going to turn her in. I'm not sure to who or for what. Must be some wingnut security group that'll be rounding us all up eventually.

If Obama had been given preferential treatment in the Democratic primary, like awarded votes he had not received, or had he been given delegates from states he did not earn through those votes, or had he been declared victorious in debates where he did not participate, or had he been given free advertising time in the media where his opponents had to pay for theirs, then Mr. Savage, you'd have a point, and I would agree with you.

Can't remember reading or hearing about any of that though......

Actually, there have been two Affirmative Action Presidents. Adams and Bush. In this country we have affirmative action for white folks - it's called being a legacy. That's how lots of white kids get into good schools - their father or mother went there so they get to go there. Now, you won't hear people like Ole BlunderRush or Sheer Insannity talking about this brand of affirmative action - but that's precisely what it is.

There's usually, in retrospect, reasons one can discern as to why the winner won.  Often it's because he had unfair advantages someone else didn't.  He had the support of key people who were pushing him; or he was the most photogenic or tallest in the field of candidates; or he just happened to contrast best against the incumbent party's likely candidates or policies; or he had a new strategy of campaigning the others didn't; or he was the one who 'deserved it' (fair or unfair depending on how you look at it by virtue of a party hierarchy but  especially big among the GOP); or he struck the fancy of the corporate media as the best story; or he was very wealthy or appealed most to donors;  or others in the same party field cancelled each other out; he had the weakest association to an unpopular Congress, etcetera, etcetera.  There must be a 101 or 1001 possible unfair reasons.

So IF there was an element of trying to pay back a loyal constituency group in the nomination of Sen. Obama, among many other reasons, I submit that wasn't fair to the other candiddates.  If there was an element in him being perhaps the most photogenic, that wasn't fair either.  If he made for the best story, etc., etc., etc.  But no matter who won it wouldn't have been fair!

To complain about about one reason or another as unfair is to state the obvious.  It's like complaining avout the weather, which isn't fair either.  Politics is war without the violence as I see it.  In both you use whatever assets you have.

If Obama and his wife have not benefitted from Affirmative Action, then Affirmative Action hasn't worked and it should be abolished.  You could argue that it was the right thing for them to benefit from it.  That would be fine.  However, you cannot be consistent if you argue that they did not benefit from Affirmative Action, but it should still exist.

Then there's the argument that had Obama been born in South Central amongst rampant poverty and despair, would he have been able to crawl out of it and succeed.  Some do, some don't.

I must disagree with your logic,wtparry858890349929i4.   It could be argued that the Obamas benefitted in a general sense from the more open atmosphere created by affirmative action.  Certainly, their opportunities would have been different 50 years earlier.  That being said, I have seen no evidence that either one of them was promoted at the expense of a more qualified white person, which is what Weenie is asserting.  They are both, apparently, very smart, and have earned their way upward.  Racists like Weenie will never accept that, but they'll have to learn to live with it.

I could be wrong, but I think PigBoy Limbaugh floated his own version of this racist smear several months ago.  I have no doubt that, if Obama wins, it will be a central part of the Troglodyte whinefest which will inevitably follow.

      Dear Mr. Savage,

You're an idiot. As others on this comment board have noticed, Obama did not receive a single vote that he didn't actually, you know, get, and therefore your claim of affirmative action, does not hold.

Look, just because you once applied for a job as dean of the school of journalism, bearing in mind, you never took a journalism class, and was passed over for someone who had, you know, a PHD in said field of study, and that this person happened to be someone who was not white, you were not a victim of affirmative action. Not even close to it. You were beat out by a better qualified man, and that's it. Stop whining about it you moron. Why? Mostly, because you have a great job. You make lots of money. And get to spew your stupid silly venom on a daily basis to millions of people who listen to your drivel. By any measure, you are a success in America. You've made your money. You're a top talk show radio host. Hearing you cry and whine about how you're oppressed is ridiculous.

Obama was given everything to him? I highly doubt that. Mostly because, have you ever been a black man in America? Sure, you're Jewish, or were Jewish, and Jews have been oppressed for a long time, but you can't claim to even think about being an oppressed Jew in NYC? Really? Seriously? Probably the one place in America where Jews aren't discriminated against, or really, throughout the rest of the country, they aren't, well, anymore.

Savage, you're a moron. It's really that simple.

At the risk of embarrassing you for a second time HBL, I gotta say this.  Unless you're putting us on and you already are one, you should be some kind of a professional writer.  Even this short comment was elegantly written.  It happens that I agree with you most of time, but I'm not talking about your keen political/social insights.  That can be learned I think.  Writing ability is much more difficult to improve on.  IMO, at your level, it's a gift.  I wonder can gifted people see their gift---they probably just take it for granted---hence this comment to you.  ...............  Not to mention the bottomless well of humor you seem to be able to draw from---and I'm not alone in wondering about that.  I remember FMP asking if you were a professional comedian, and if I have him down right he was a very funny guy himself under another name.  It's one thing to have just great political insights or just be a gifted writer or just be very funny, but to have all three...well...the sky's the limit by my lights.

I would think your comments on this site would serve as enough of a portfolio to get a start somewhere.

Why do I care?  I shouldn't.  We're not cyber pals and I've even expressed myself at length on that general subject so I think you know where I'm not coming from.  And it would be a great loss to this site obviously.  But I like to see the best players out on the field; the best horse jump the ditch.  As funny as I feel writing this, I'd feel guilty if I said nothing, and that's the worst for me.  I see so many people in the media whose performance is lacking and it annoys me greatly.  Like Al Franken says, "Why not you?"

Reading Savage's paranoid ramblings always reminds me of Kurtz in Heart of Darkness:

"Whether he knew of this deficiency himself I can't say. I think the knowledge came to him at last--only at the very last. But the wilderness found him out early, and had taken vengeance for the fantastic invasion. I think it had whispered to him things about himself which he did not know, things of which he had no conception till he took counsel with this great solitude--and the whisper had proved irresistibly fascinating. It echoed loudly within him because he was hollow at the core."

Just a thought on Affirmative Action - I like to use the analogy of running a marathon. For years, those in power and the rest of us were supposedly running the same 26.2 miles. However, half way through the race, it was discovered that those in power were only running 20 miles. So, to make things fair, the rest of the runners were given a chance to catch up. Same thing holds true with AA - you can't give people a head start in life, society, etc. at the expense of others and not expect people to be given a fair chance.

I actually lost as a result of affirmative action, many times in my life.

No Mike, you lost because you're a jackass.  You were born with very little talent and have worked hard over the years to make up for it by bolstering your ignorance.  All else being equal, if you were black you'd have far less success than you have now: most Blacks would still hate you, as would 99% of your current audience.

Re. Savage and affirmative action: Savage, now almost 40 years later, still steams over the fact that he applied for the position of Dean of Berkeley's School of Journalism. At the time, he was a newly-minted Ph.D from Berkeley (although certainly not in journalism) and had published a few books (publisher? His wife, Janet!) -- all relating to healthy food and herbs.

It is said that his doctoral dissertation (on ethno medicine-- i.e., South Seas native plants and herbs) was never peer reviewed -- something that all well-regarded scientific work requires.

The Wiener was considered by Berkely to be so unqualified for the journalism post that he wasn't even considered for an interview.  More importantly, the guy who wound up with the job WAS NOT A MINORITY!  Savage has never acknowledged this.

Savage claims that he is the heart, guts and soul of talk radio. His ignorance of anatomy shows here; he is the anus.

He got in because his father, grandfather, and most members of his family went there. He culdn't have gotten in on his own. Also, Obama might have gotten into Harvard on Affirmative Action, but he did not become first in his class because of it. We need to call Savage et. al. and stick this in their faces.

People of color in this society will never achieve anything of greatness without worthless race-baiters like this worm calling us beneficiaries of affirmative action. If we become rich and kiss their butts, we are the embodiment of the American Dream. If we are concerned with justice or merely working to undo some flaw in this flawed country, we are rabble-rousing affirmative action hires. This is b.s. When is Michael Weiner finally going to jump the shark?

Unfortunately, here in the usa and elsewhere I presume there will be and are people who have hate in their hearts against other people simply because of their skin....that is very very sad. I heard Savage say this on the radio....and in this context it seems waaay out there...but I've never heard savage over the course of the last 9 months say he wouldn't vote for Obama because of his skin color...in fact I've heard him say a number of times he'd vote for a Black Woman if she stood for Borders, Language, and culture. Unfortunately, Savage doesn't ever do a good job of explaining his comments as he says them...but when listened to enough you get a full picture of what he "means" when he says things...but Media Matters doesn't care about that....so they'll pull out little tid bits to make people scream racism etc.
