SUMMARY: Dick Morris falsely claimed that Sen. Barack Obama said that "it was a tragedy that the United States Supreme Court never addressed the issue of redistributing the nation's wealth to achieve social and economic justice." In fact, the "tragedy" Obama identified during the 2001 radio appearance to which Morris referred was that the civil rights movement "became so court-focused" in trying to bring about political and economic justice.

On the October 29 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor, syndicated columnist and Fox News contributor Dick Morris falsely claimed that Sen. Barack Obama said that "it was a tragedy that the United States Supreme Court never addressed the issue of redistributing the nation's wealth to achieve social and economic justice, which is as close to Marxism as we're going to have in this country." Morris' statement echoes a false claim made by Matt Drudge and several media figures.

In fact, contrary to what Morris asserted, during the 2001 appearance on Chicago public radio station WBEZ to which Morris referred, Obama did not say it is a "tragedy" that the Supreme Court has not addressed wealth redistribution. The "tragedy" Obama identified was that the civil rights movement "became so court-focused" in trying to bring about political and economic justice. Obama stated: "And one of the -- I think the tragedies of the civil rights movement was, because the civil rights movements became so court-focused, I think that there was a tendency to lose track of the political and community organizing, and activities on the ground that are able to put together the actual coalitions of power through which you bring about redistributive change."

From the October 29 edition of Fox News' The O'Reilly Factor:

O'REILLY: But Obama's trying to blunt, you know, McCain's rise in the polls a little bit. We don't know how much. And in this kind of assault by having this giant infomercial tonight on every channel, except here because, you know, why would you pre-empt me for that? I mean, nobody would. So, is that a smart strategy for Obama to do that?

MORRIS: Yeah, it sure is. And it's unprecedented. We don't know what impact it's going to have, because no candidate's ever done it. It's not just that he's running an ad. It's that you have to watch ABC TV or the Fox News Channel to avoid seeing the ad.

O'REILLY: Yeah, it's on all -- right, all the things --

MORRIS: You could also watch ESPN if you want. But it's on NBC, CBS, and Fox Network. And that could be very effective. He could have 40 million people watching it tonight. And that could really change this race back again. And then McCain would have a higher mountain to climb.

But the problem is that Obama has nothing new to say. He has the same 47 million uninsured, which includes illegal immigrants, but he doesn't say that. I do in Fleeced. He has the same bit about increased taxes on people making more than a quarter-million. He has all the same stuff. And he doesn't really have anything new to say.

Whereas McCain has volumes of new stuff to say, about income redistribution, sharing the wealth, this recent quote of Obama's that it was a tragedy that the United States Supreme Court never addressed the issue of redistributing the nation's wealth to achieve social and economic justice, which is as close to Marxism as we're going to have in this country. That stuff is new. And I think McCain is scoring with it.

O'REILLY: I do, too.

I will bet you dollars to donuts the *real* reason Morris works for Fox is that all those blonde newsbabes wear open-toed shoes on the set or kick them off out of the camera's view and Morris thinks he's in heaven. Wonder if he thinks about Palin's tootsies as well? Tell us Dicky-Boy. Who at Fox has the nicest pedicure? Inquiring minds want to know!!!!

The term 'redistributive justice" is an old term and it has nothing to do with socialism. For any of these pundits to not know this is truly embarassing-- like Emily Latilla on SNL, who always waxed on and on about something until she was told that she somehow got the word wrong, and that there was no problem.

Except these guys never say "Nevermind."

Hi, my name is Dick Morris. I cannot help but to lie every chance I get. So, if you'll just believe the opposite of what I say, everything will be fine.

Yes. McCain has volumes of new things to say. Because the right is still looking for a smear that will stick. Sorry Dick. You're running out of time. You should probably join all the other rats who are fleeing the sinking ship. Hell even Neil Cavuto is ragging on McCain now.

I find it extremely funny that they tried to tie Obama to Ayers, and now they've moved on to someone with a "terrorist" sounding name. And they're calling that guy a Palestinian sympathizer. Yeah, of course he is, the man is Palestinian, jeesh. And uh oh, he has criticized Israel before... Ooooh. Watch out! The man is a radical!

What a crock. Why is it you can't criticize Israel without being called either anti semitic, or a terrorists. Guess what folks? Israelis do horrible things to the Palestinians on a daily basis. They are an oppressed people living under the guns of the IDF. Do I think it justifies bombings and other things? No, absolutely not. But, until you've been there, and seen how the majority of Palestinians live, judge not what they go through. And the press in the US, honestly, doesn't show anything from the Palestinian view of things, we get the hard varnished BS from Israel.

To me, this is one of their most blatant lies.  It's easy to see what Obama actually said, and they're taking truncated quotes and mixing them up to say whatever they want them to say.  The Obama campaign needs to get their surrogates on all the talk shows and set the record straight.

This may not make any difference, but why take the chance?  The truth is relatively easy to understand, even for the mouthbreathing Troglodytes.  The sad part is that War Hero Grampy is on the stump peddling lies, and he has to be aware of it.  I've never had any reason to believe that he is not intelligent enough to know the difference.

Now, Simple Sarah, on the other hand.... she just stands there and repeats whatever they tell her to say.... kind of like our current President Numbnuts.  Maybe that's why the Troglodytes picked her.... just another talking points puppet.

So that explains the look on her face.  Someone's had their hand up Palin's a$$ all this time!

I wonder, have any of these lying sacks of sh*t even played the tape of Obama saying these "horrible" things unedited?  usually, if they have someone saying something embarrassing, they play it over and over.  I have a feeling that they aren't doing that in this case;  it's much easier to just lie about what he said.

I know they lie all the time, but this one just bugs me because it is so brazen and so easily proven wrong.

      A$$holes.

How can Dick Morris, of all people, criticize somebody that is an actual, real life, constitutional lawyer, and try to debate their point? This guy thinks Sean Hannity is smart, for heaven's sake! Dick, a word from the wise: don't talk, debate, voice an opinion or anything that resembles communication (including sign language) because you're an IDIOT. As a matter of fact, I doubt your brain has the capacity to comprehend anyhting above the 5th grade level. You really sound a lot like that Sarah Palin -- the hockey mom! Not good.

Obama's actual comments seem to be consistent with people opposed to "judicial activism".

That's actually a CONSERVATIVE point of view to anyone who take the time to understand what he said.
