In the days before the election, media figures have repeatedly compared Obama to Hitler
SUMMARY: Since October 16, numerous media figures -- among them Jerome Corsi, Ann Coulter, Mark Levin, and Bill Cunningham -- have compared Sen. Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler or the Nazis.
Since October 16, several media figures -- including author Jerome Corsi, Fox News contributor Ann Coulter, radio hosts Mark Levin and Bill Cunningham, author Hilmar von Campe, and Townhall.com columnist Laura Hollis -- have compared Sen. Barack Obama to Adolf Hitler or the Nazis.
- In an October interview with Gentleman's Quarterly magazine, responding to the question, "What's been the most interesting reaction to your book?" Jerome Corsi, author of the debunked and discredited book, The Obama Nation: Leftist Politics and the Cult of Personality, asserted: "This whole cult of personality is a miscalculation. We should have learned in the last century that a cult of personality was very dangerous -- left or right, Hitler or Stalin. It didn't work out very well."
- On the October 30 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes, Coulter asserted: "With one association after another that is beyond the pale with Barack Obama, I feel like we are talking to the Germans after Hitler comes to power saying, 'Oh, well, I didn't know. I had no idea he was going to be like this.' " As Media Matters for America has documented, Coulter has repeatedly likened Obama to Hitler.
- On the October 29 edition of ABC Radio Networks' The Mark Levin Show, Levin asserted that Obama is "really into these big German-like events that he creates in this country, isn't he? Have you noticed that?" Curtis Sliwa, WABC radio host and CEO and founder of the community activist organization Guardian Angels, responded: "I am telling you, and he comes out and it's almost as if the crowd stands in unison, and I'm saying to myself, 'Oh my God, the Olympic Stadium, Berlin, 1938,' " to which Levin replied: "Yeah, we've seen this. It's scary." Sliwa then asserted: "And the only thing missing is he's not standing up in an open car."
- On the October 28 edition of Clear Channel's The Big Show with Bill Cunningham, referring to Sen. John McCain, Cunningham asserted: "Maybe it's his age, or maybe it's his lack of eloquence. Whatever it is, the guy just doesn't have the same verbal skills of someone like a Barack Hussein Obama. Of course, Adolf Hitler had great verbal skills, too, and he led the country of his country to disaster."
- Von Campe, author of the book Defeating the Totalitarian Lie: A Former Hitler Youth Warns America, wrote in an October 28 WorldNetDaily column headlined "Humanity's insurrection against God": "Socialist Hitler destroyed free society in a few months. Socialist Obama is close to his steppingstone."
- In her October 16 column headlined, "Time to Use the 'C' Word," Hollis wrote: "And we are being lured into the same noose that has ensnared so many millions of hapless souls, despite reams of pages of history. We express horror at the Hitler Youth in little matching uniforms singing 'Hitler will save us, Hitler is our Lord,' but then we smile and laugh as we see grade schoolers in matching blue t-shirts singing, 'Obama's gonna save us.'"
As Media Matters for America has documented, conservative pundits have repeatedly made comparisons between Obama and Hitler or the Nazis.
From Corsi's October interview with Gentleman's Quarterly magazine:
What's been the most interesting reaction to your book?
Well, what's happened with this book is the ideological bent of the mainstream media has never been more apparent. The New York Times, which claims to be objective journalism, introduces me with a string of loaded, emotionally weighted adjectives and says the book is full of lies. These guys are in love with Obama, and they don't realize that that's to the detriment of Obama. Because of the mainstream-media love affair, I think you're going to see voters experiencing Obama fatigue. Is he going to break open the skies and come down in a chariot of lightning and start healing people? This whole cult of personality is a miscalculation. We should have learned in the last century that a cult of personality was very dangerous -- left or right, Hitler or Stalin. It didn't work out very well. And it didn't work out well with the columns at Invesco Field, either.
From the October 30 edition of Fox News' Hannity & Colmes:
COULTER: With one association after another that is beyond the pale with Barack Obama, I feel like we are talking to the Germans after Hitler comes to power saying, "Oh, well, I didn't know. I had no idea he was going to be like this."
ALAN COLMES (co-host): Ann --
COULTER: With this guy, Americans ought to know. The media is covering up except on this channel -- thank you, Sean Hannity.
COLMES: What -- what kind of judgment does it show --
COULTER: This is shocking. One time after another.
From the October 29 edition of ABC Radio Networks' The Mark Levin Show:
LEVIN: Let me ask you something. By the way, my buddy Curtis Sliwa on WABC in the mornings and also being syndicated throughout the country. Curtis Sliwa, you know, since Barack Obama made a comparison, I will make less of a vicious comparison, but -- I'm getting feedback in my ears, boys -- but, he's really into these big German-like events that he creates in this country, isn't he?
SLIWA: Oh --
LEVIN: Have you noticed that?
SLIWA: I am telling you -- and he comes out and it's almost as if the crowd stands in unison, and I'm saying to myself, "Oh my God, the Olympic Stadium, Berlin, 1938."
LEVIN: Yeah, we've seen this.
SLIWA: Yes.
LEVIN: It's scary.
SLIWA: And the only thing missing is he's not standing up in an open car. He's basically trotting out, you know, on the tarmac that leads right to the main stage. But he -- he's loving every second of it. He wants love from the audience. And they give it to him.
LEVIN: Well, he's trying to create the impression that he's bigger than life, that he is the messiah, that he's already our leader, and that this election is just sort of an administrative step to the inevitable.
From the October 28 edition of Clear Channel's The Big Show with Bill Cunningham:
CUNNINGHAM: After eight years of George Bush and Dick Cheney, I think many occasional voter watching American Idol says it's time that we had an American president who could actually talk well and made some sense. And when John McCain talks, he often makes no sense and doesn't know what he's saying. Maybe it's his age, or maybe it's his lack of eloquence. Whatever it is, the guy just doesn't have the same verbal skills of someone like a Barack Hussein Obama. Of course, Adolf Hitler had great verbal skills, too, and he led the country of his country to disaster. Change is coming. Change came to Cuba with Fidel Castro. Change came to China, Mao Zedong. Change came to Russia with the Bolsheviks and then the communists. Change is not necessarily a good thing.
From von Campe's October 28 WorldNetDaily column:
Nietzsche is an atheist German philosopher who lived from 1844-1900 and together with others of the radical left of that time like Arthur Schopenhower [sic] created the intellectual atmosphere for Karl Marx and his Communist Manifesto. They called for changing society -- but not to improve the life of people but to use them to gain power and keep it. He created the concept of "overman," the man stronger than others with the right to step over the weak, which attracted Hitler. The alternative to Marxism is not capitalism, as so many people believe. The only alternative is an answer to the spiritual fundament of this godless philosophy. The change they are talking about is no change but a steppingstone to their own power on the way to a totalitarian system. Socialist Hitler destroyed free society in a few months. Socialist Obama is close to his steppingstone. The following is an attempt to clarify the issue.
From Hollis' October 16 column posted on Townhall.com:
What is exceptional is our economic and political system. If we dismantle the very procedural protections that were put into place to protect us from tyranny (by people who had lived with tyranny and knew it well), then tyranny is what we will get.
And we are being lured into the same noose that has ensnared so many millions of hapless souls, despite reams of pages of history. We express horror at the Hitler Youth in little matching uniforms singing "Hitler will save us, Hitler is our Lord," but then we smile and laugh as we see grade schoolers in matching blue t-shirts singing, "Obama's gonna save us." We are outraged by the army of children in Sudan, but think nothing of American black boys in camouflage pumping their fists and chanting propaganda from Obama's campaign. We are repulsed by some dictators' claims that they are gods, but shrug it off as insignificant when Louis Farrakhan -- a vicious anti-Semite, among other reprehensible things - says "the Messiah is speaking" in a speech referring to Obama.
Still don't think it can happen here? Well, you're in good company. Neither did the Russians. Or the Germans. Or the Chinese. Or the North Koreans. Or the Vietnamese. Or the Cubans. Or the Cambodians.
Critics will call this alarmist fear-mongering. So be it. Don't say you haven't been warned.

So, is the Hitler comparison the final indication of overwhelming desperation, or what?
Is this the show where Colmes got his dig in on Ann the Man? She was hyperventilating about how anybody could allow themselves to be in the same room with dangerous fanatics like Ayers or Khalidi, and Colmes said "Well, I'm in the same room with you...."
Bang, Zoom! That has to be Alan's best line ever.
Nerz, it was good, except he missed the next opportunity.
Annie-Christ's comeback was that she wasn't running for president.
To which Colmes should have said "Neither is Ayers/Wright/Rezko etc.", allowing Coulter to demolish her own feeble argument.
You can call it desperation if you want. The preferred term is TheSurge™ of oppositioin-focused alternative perception counter-virtue campaign strategy.
I doubt Corsi, Coulter, Levin, and Cunningham are doing this in an attempt to sway voters at this point. I think they're trying to get Obama killed.
Who would have the nerves to do it?
How the hell would I know?! I am speaking to the motives behind the hate speech. They are clearly making way too over the top remarks to influence any voter, so they must be trying to speak to whack jobs.
Don't kid yourself. There are plenty of nutbags out there who would see it as a chance to get famous.
I think the assasination idea is already well distributed among our domestic terrorist nutjobs. This is more for our right wiing ideological and media nutjobs. They are preparing for the possibility of a potential Obama administration where his every move is sinister and must be stopped. It will be just like when Clinton first appeared on the national scene. From the beginning he was to be the end of civiliation. America is only to become more and more conservative. Any deviation from this result is pathological by definition.
It is highly Ironic that enthusiasm for Obama is translated into mindless fascistic idolation by these media clowns. Remember the Bush mania after 9-11 when he was the great decider? Reagan (an actor) is heading for mount rushmore any day now. In our current drama we have Palin and Joe the plummer as celebrity media entities. Only enthusiasm for conservative icons can be healthy and patriotic and actually its this kind of mentality that is the seed of fascism. If Obama's message of hope has any traction, for these wingnuts it can only be the same reflex as a nurenburgh rally because only enthusiasm for their ideas and their people is rational and functional. Obama is not among them, therefor he is a socialistic terrorist loving muslim morphing into hitler.
I was at an Obama rally yesterday and the drama of the event was powerful. However, what the Ann Culters of the world can't grasp is that Obama is striking a nerve because he is reminding us that there is a different identity and vision for America than the one that the Bush adminsitration has shown the world. Yes people are emotional and have hope that we are a people that can solve our problems. This however is not a vision of scapegoating or excusion. It is more a vision that reminds us that we have been and can again be a great nation. 8 years of Bush have put us in a place where we don't want to be.
It doesn't take nerve to assassinate another human being, it only takes cowardice.
And there are more cowards running around than anyone can imagine. All being pushed by the supreme cowards on the right.
These guys?
Nah. The people who would want to do it, and who are also capable of pulling it off like say with JFK won't because they'd install an Irish-Catholic. Obama likely picked him for this reason, at least in part.
The true lone assassin types who might be inspired by talk radio would likely fail.
Jerome Corsi, Ann Coulter, Mark Levin, and Bill Cunningham...?
Enough said...
Ann must have had her teeth whitened. They always looked yellow before.
Where have you been since Bush jr. has been the prez??? It's suckers like you that have kept the Republican neo-cons in power and they've been stealing you blind, giving the money to their fat cat donors.
Ever hear of corporate welfare? Talk about "socialism" buddy, much more of your taxes go to support the corporate/military/industrial complex than go to any programs to help the poor. Do you know that the multi-national corporation b*sturds with their interlocking corporate boards get REWARDED with TAXPAYER money when they ship your job overseas? WAKE UP!!!
These people on the right are so hypocritical. Yeah, adoration for Obama is mindless and excessive. What about their hatred and fear? Their name-calling? Their lies? Their allegations of anti-semitism and racism and their calls of "socialist"? Their HITLER COMPARISONS!
John McCain and Sarah Palin should come out with an ad publicly repudiating these remarks. Although they risk losing 90% of their voters. But still, they need to gain some respect.
You know, Obama's supporters focus on the positives and the bright side. Conservatives just love to predict doomsday with Obama. Full of racism, intolerance, and just vitriol in general.
Palin did that today. Gloom and doom and she mentioned the F-word...FEAR. But can anyone be suprised.
Snoopy, how dare you insult this beautiful animal? It is hilarious. I guess Annie is plotting out her voting places as we speak.
I need help..was Hilter a Muslim? ;>)
Actually Hitler liked Muslims.. Enemy of my enemy is my friend sort of thing. He actually had a segment of the Waffen SS that was comprised of muslims. Go figure.
When Moveon let a poster post a Bush is Hitler ad they went ballistic. Now they are making Obama is Hitler the focus of all of their arguments.
It's amazing what the Kool-aid does to your perceptions, isn't it? It wasn't a "poster" making the Hitler comparison to Bush- it was "bowelmovement.org" themselves who made a video that had Bush morphing into Hiter, with all the usual leftwing "see the fascist" compartives narrated. I suppose you'll contend that moveon didn't actually make the "Betray-us" ad for the NYT either??
Can you link to something substantiating that?
Yeah- here it is. watchall the way to the end- the end tag of the video says "Sponsored by Moveon.org." They made mroe than one of these under the premise of a contest and then distrubuted their "winner" on the net. As for the Colonel, you know what you can do with your "bat".
http://www.teachertube.com/view_video.php?viewkey=d599736ffe74624b615b
No. It was a poster.
I seem to have misplaced my scorecard. Where's MissDee now, about 0 for 1,ooo?
>>It's amazing what the Kool-aid does to your perceptions, isn't it?
Apparently so. Even if you weren't wrong on the facts you are using a typical right wing tactic of arguing minutae while ignoring your obvious hypocrisy.
I wouldn't compare Obama to Hitler. I would compare him to Jesus because he is going to pay for everyone's gas and mortgages!
Actually, GG, it is the Bush administration that is currently planning on putting 50 billion of the handout, I mean, bailout money, toward paying for broken mortgages. Some has also gone to banks and financial firms, who are using it to form mergers, trade each other's stocks around, and play other forms of Monopoly. For sure, you and I won't see any of it under any Republican administration. These are real problems, real scandals happening now, right under your nose. Instead of nursing your imaginary fears about Obama, why don't you stand up and vote for a candidate who might do something to build this country back up?
You're right. My eyes are now open. I'll vote for Obama because he's just such a good sugar daddy.
GG, Who's in the White House today?
P.S. I am voting for Obama and I have my 65" Mitsubishi plasmaTV with a Bose surround sound system added. I am waiting for my free money. Since all McCain supporters make over $250,00 a year, they can give me thier money by way of the old tax system, unless you wish to send it directly to me. How much will Cindy McCain save by now going back to the previous tax scale before Bush lowered them? Yes, I believe in class envy. Obama has it, McCain doesn't especially Sarah Mae Clampett.
Bose system ...."on order".
Bose - no highs, no lows.
With a tin ear like that, no wonder you support McSame.
Yeah.. class warfare being spread by a guy who lives in a 1.6 million dollar mansion in Hyde Park because he has class envy. right. sure.. all you'll get from Obama with the help of his other two stooges heading up the house and senate is two classes- them and the poor. Starting a depression is a sure way to make that a reality.
Democratic Congresspeople = Rich people who still care about those with less
Republican Congresspeople = Rich people who want to screw those with less
I'll take the rich guy with the empathy every time.
Yeah.. empathy as long as it's other people's money. Obama's borther lives in poverty in Nigeria.. His aunt is getting deported because she's in the US illegally and has been living on public assistance and section 8 housing. Joe Biden gives less to charity than I throw in the collectionplate at Mass on an annual basis, and their all so generous.
Now, to counter that stetement of yours as for Republicans screwing those with less, let's talk about Johnand Cindy McCain bringing back a sick child from Bangladesh, getting her medical help and ultimately adopting her.
hypocritical - it always comes down to that, doesn't it? And the likes of Obama is who you want deciding WHO benefits from YOUR money? No thanks. I'll still make my own choices.
Obviously OnceYouGoBarack is a victim.
Not as much as you and Miss DeeMinus are victims of a rampant lobotomist.
Excellent play on words! Apparently wingnuts are easy to refute.
And your sucessful choices of the last eight years would be? How someone so bound up in shrub's policies will continue your sucess?
If you have been sucessful then that puts you into two percent of the population, congratulations. Wealth concentration has worked well for you then. You look forward to the further bleeding of this country to your benifit then. That being so I can see where your aledged charity could easily out match Joe's
Barrack's brother does not appear to feel he is underpriviledged and would feel insulted to be so labeled. You'd feel better with nepotism? That dearly beloved adopted child stands to inherit significantly less than her siblings.
Uh yah, we elect people to make desisions that direct other peoples money hither and yawn. Its called democracy. I appreciate you feel its major function is interferring with your becoming the richest and most powerful person on earth, as is your self evident course.
Putting up better posts might help you attain that peak. Doubtful, but I'd really like to argue with a thoughtful conservative sometime.
As for the "Independent" below. Say something in Independent.
Whatr nepotism? Typical democrat. easy with everyone else's money, but I bet you wouldn't spend a nickle to help your grandma get new teeth. It's nepotism if Obama used the government to support his autn (which in an obtuse way he is) rether than cough her a few hundred bucks here and there. And have you talked to his brother in Africa? Has he told you that he's happy living on a buck a month? Get realistic here, okay? You delude yourselves in the most self-sinister ways.
You've read the McCains' will? you know what's going to what kids in what proportions? Instead think of what the girls' life would have been like (if she even lived) had they not adopted her. You Libs seem to manage to place all kinds of vice in virtue, and virtue in vice, and cant' stand to see someone living by the principles they profess. .
Again you somehow all think you know everythign about everyone but seem confused when these things about Obama crop up- associations, socialistic policies, starving blood relatives...
better posts? You cant' even think straight enough to see the holes in your own logic and assertions. So how about coughing up and telling us all what you've done for your country and for humanity in your lifetime, before you start this kind of castigation.
Whatr nepotism? Typical democrat.
Ignorant greed personified. Typical Republican.
You've read the McCains' will? you know what's going to what kids in what proportions?
It was made public. Look it up. Don't just post from ignorance, learn something, then like a typical Republican, ignore the facts and make the same wrong argument over and over again.
I participated in the Vietnam war, aircrew, Sensor#1, crew 5, Patrol Squadron One, The Screaming Chickens. Draft #52, I volunteerd. 27 years as a radiological control tech, on the nuclear water front, in a federal shipyard. Your welcome, and yourself?
Turns out however got you that infomation on the aunt is liable for violating a federal law. Congradulations on being an accessory to a federal crime.
the information on the aunt was publicized on the "not in the tank for Obama" news media, but I doubt you listen to it even though you and the likes of MMfA vigorously discount anything said there. SO there's no crime, as much as your deluded mind would wish it to be so.
The very image of a major modern wingnut. Stare in awe folks. I must be one of those unamerican veterans duly and rightfully busted by this paragon of all that is truely american.
Snork!
Legitmimate democrat, will those words ever pass your lips Em Dee?
Should be "legitimate". Yes school marm, no school marm, of course school marm.
Whenever any person or group tries to use the Hitler analogy they immediately lose the argument in my book. It wasn't convincing in describing Saddam Hussein or Mahmoud Ahmadinejad and it definitely has no place in describing any aspect of Senator Obama's personality or campaign. They are just a bunch of idiots...
so you're saying the Hitler analogy only works when it's a liberal making the analogy to a conservative? I guess that's predictable.
I don't think there is any valid analogy to Hitler in this day and time, regardless of which side is trying to use it. Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post! :-)
so you're saying the Hitler analogy only works when it's a liberal making the analogy to a conservative?
hm1342 said nothing of the sort. Dids you confuse a post on MMfA with the voices in your head lying to you again?
You should get an award for that. I hereby decree that ewe receive 10 PrinceCrowns for whatever you said about that nut.
P.S. maybe you can tell me if this is true. I heard a lot of sheep have committed suicide after hearing the song,,"There'll Never Be Another Ewe"
Sounds like my agent is out of control again. Its the leaches for you Harvey! You hear me!
As a true child of Montana, sheep have a special place in mah heart.
I hope the crowns are stackable?
Anyone interested in H, also Nappy and that happy sadist Stalin, should check out "Dictators in the Medical Mirror", Don't remember the author, the book is only a year or two old.
After some digging, the SS had a meeting with H. It was resolved that for genetic reasons, children were a bad idea.
I give credit to media matters for pointing this out, because it really is inappropriate and I agree with those who have said that people lose their legitimacy when making this comparison. However, as someone who has been at a number of marches and rallies (e.g. the rally against the RNC in NYC in 204), I can safely say that I have seen many signs and banners that replace the 'S' in the name Bush with a swastika. Shouldn't we also acknowledge/condemn that sort of behavior as well? I understand that this is not portrayed in the mainstream media the way it is on FOX news, but to me, it's a similar problem. I have an extreme distaste for George W. Bush, but I'm not willing to compare him to Adolf Hitler.
Did a monkey compose this on a typewriter?
It's either the Kool-aid or they are a product of a liberal education.
or maybe it's a monkey.. drink enough kool-aid and this could be what happnes.
Drink too much vodka, and posts like Miss DeeMinus' happen.
Just as news surfaces that Obama promises to fund a paramilitary National Security Force, no doubt answerable only to the president, as these thug armies always are, Salon suggests the comparison between Obama and Hitler is silly.
Further, Obama thinks the nation's resources should be "redistributed" on the basis of race and class...so did Hitler, albeit Hitler's stereotypes were rich, privileged Jews vs poor, victimized Aryans, rather than the Democrat party's stereotypes of privileged whites vs their black victims, still the constant demonization of those expected to shell out for those stereotyped as "victims" is the same.
That's the trouble with electing these dictator types, they inspire so much hate the very first thing they need is that national "security" force to quell the violence inevitably caused by polarizing people into hostile political groups, unwittingly arguing over the spending of their own paychecks.
Mitsubishi doesn't make a 65" plasma tv. Thanks for proving yourself a liar.
Mitsubishi makes a 65" DLP, that's what we have and it's wonderful.
Thanks for proving yourself a nit-picker. How many are in your collection of nits now?
Why doesn't Joe Lieberman say anything about how outrageous this is? I'm so disappointed in him.
Yes, it's desperate. Basically, they are basing their comparison on his enourmous popularity. Which implies that a better choice for president is someone who is unpopular. And that's worked out so well for us the past eight years.
