SUMMARY: On Bob Grant's radio show, Ann Coulter suggested that President-elect Barack Obama's "civilian national security force" would lead to "a lot more Waco raids, Elian Gonzalez snatchings." In fact, Obama's comments about the necessity of a "civilian national security force" referred to expanding the Foreign Service, AmeriCorps, and the Peace Corps.

During his November 5 broadcast, New York radio host Bob Grant played an audio clip of President-elect Barack Obama stating: "We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded." Responding to the clip, Grant's guest, conservative commentator Ann Coulter, said: "Sounds like there's gonna be a lot more Waco raids, Elian Gonzalez snatchings. I don't know, I don't know. I mean, I think this -- I think Obama is a frightening candidate. We'll see." In fact, as Media Matters for America has previously noted, Obama's comments about the necessity of a "civilian national security force" -- which Grant falsely asserted came from Obama's Election Day remarks but were actually from a July 2 speech on service -- referred to expanding the Foreign Service, AmeriCorps, and the Peace Corps.

From Obama's July 2 speech in Colorado Springs, Colo.:

Today, AmeriCorps -- our nation's network of local, state, and national service programs -- has 75,000 slots. And I know firsthand the quality of these programs. My wife, Michelle, once left her job at a law firm and at City Hall to be a founding director of an AmeriCorps program in Chicago that trains young people for careers in public service. And these programs invest Americans in their communities and their country. They tap America's greatest resource -- our citizens.

And that's why as president, I will expand AmeriCorps to 250,000 slots and make that increased service a vehicle to meet national goals like providing health care and education, saving our planet and restoring our standing in the world, so that citizens see their efforts connected to a common purpose. People of all ages, stations, and skills will be asked to serve. Because when it comes to the challenges we face, the American people are not the problem -- they are the answer.

So we are going to send -- we're going to send more college graduates to teach and mentor our young people. We'll call on Americans to join an Energy Corps to conduct renewable energy and environmental cleanup projects in their neighborhoods all across the country. We will enlist our veterans to find jobs and support for other vets, to be there for our military families. And we're going to grow our Foreign Service, open consulates that have been shuttered, and double the size of the Peace Corps by 2011 to renew our diplomacy.

We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.

We need to use technology to connect people to service. We'll expand USA Freedom Corps to create online networks where Americans can browse opportunities to volunteer. You'll be able to search by category, time commitment, and skill sets; you'll be able to rate service opportunities, build service networks, and create your own service pages to track your hours and activities. This will empower more Americans to craft their own service agenda, and make their own change from the bottom up.

From the November 5 broadcast of WABC Radio's Bob Grant Show:

GRANT: I want to play a portion of Barack Obama's speech last night, which I think is the most bizarre aspect of his program. Listen to this.

OBAMA [audio clip]: We cannot continue to rely only on our military in order to achieve the national security objectives that we've set. We've got to have a civilian national security force that's just as powerful, just as strong, just as well-funded.

GRANT: Ann, what do you make of that?

COULTER: Sounds like there's gonna be a lot more Waco raids, Elian Gonzalez snatchings. I don't know, I don't know. I mean, I think this -- I think Obama is a frightening candidate. We'll see.

No, that was crucial. Because then, when President Obama performs ably and she is proven wrong about her specific fears, she can always say, "I said, 'I don't know,' See, I knew even then that I might be wrong."  Yes, those weasel words are absolutely crucial. Just goes to show how seriously we should take someone who uses her words in such an unserious manner.

This is a trend I'm seeing more of from the wingnuts, the future, hypothetical strawman. It's actually pretty clever by righty standards.

They're so tired off having all of their top shelf propaganda debunked that they've gone to "prediction propaganda". Rather than lie about things that are presently happening, or have happened in the past (which can be exposed as lies), they just babble on about what will "probably" happen, as imagined in the dank recesses of their shriveled little minds.

Until somebody gets a time machine, the best anybody can do is show their ideas are crazy, but not necessarily untrue, as they haven't happened yet.

See, what you forgot, is at the time, they were under Clinton's and Reno's control, so what they were REALLY trying to do, is to break into your homes, and take ALL of your guns (even though that's not remotely what they were trying to do in Waco).

And you're right. When is it OK to shoot a federal officer, serving a warrant, and not expect a response? The ATF agents were at Waco to serve a warrant, and when they approached, armed to the teeth because they knew what weapons they had inside, those d-bags opened up on the, killed an agent, and actually killed several before it was all over.

Yeah, we definitely should have just left them alone...

AND I THOUGHT the "drinking koolaid" mantra was an insult to Jim Jones type psychos kidnapping aforementioned sacred family units. I thoought Waco was directly in answer to not having another Jonestown. Koresh was a waco pig and boinking teenagers because he could. I was in GRACELAND GIFTSHOP when I watched Waco burn. What a contrast. Anyway was Stopping Waco Wacco and returning a boy to his father um...a...bad thing? I don't get it now. Col. Sanders:  The other favorite technique is the "Imagine" - as in "Imagine if a Democrat..." or "Imagine if a liberal..."  I once commented on NewsBusters that they use "Imagine" more than John Lennon.  This is an astonishing intellectually flabby trick because he has no boundries - and is impossible to disprove because it is made up in the first place.

Did you know Ann Falter was still around?  I wonder where she voted - if she ever figured out where she lives.  Since that's public information I hope some people down in Palm Beach spend a few minutes to look into out.  Same for our friends in New York - or was in Connecticut?  Or all three?

I thought she'd dried up and blown away.  Now she's a guest on the Bob Grant show?  I guess she's about fourteen and one-half minutes into her full fifteen...

Waco was under Bush's FBI, and that state government's incitement of the whole mass murder. It was done to embarrass the Clinton Administration and to confabulate a pretext for Tim McVeigh's patsy swan song on the Oklahoma Federal demolition/truck bomb combination. The ultra-left separatist fascist Coulter is can't stop recriminating. It's her job and its supposed to fool enough of the people enough of the time. Their gangland insurrection isn't going to get buy without a propagandist and Coulter is just one of them.

      You Must Stay Afraid

The conservatives will not leave power without some residue of their trademark. With one last attempt to hold  their illsusion they are keeping us safe, they will, on cue, continue to play thre fear card.

Yes, the boggie man is alive and kicking. The difference now is the Republicans will soon be without any power to create a false reality. No more orange cards; no more phony claims Al Qaeda is next door ready to take down airplans with soda battles and various unknown devices. It is coming to a end.

"Obama's comments about the necessity of a "civilian national security force" -- which Grant falsely asserted came from Obama's Election Day remarks but were actually from a July 2 speech on service -- referred to expanding the Foreign Service, AmeriCorps, and the Peace Corps."
