SUMMARY: Jim Quinn cited as evidence of "the chickification of schools, the feminization of society, and the war on masculinity" the story of a teacher who reportedly informed the school principal and campus police that a picture of a vampire one of her students had drawn might contain gang symbols. Quinn added that "the goal of the public school system -- the feminists in the public school system -- is to make male behavior illegal, a crime."

After reading from a blog post about a Georgia teacher who reportedly informed the school principal and campus police that a picture of a vampire one of her students had drawn might contain gang symbols, radio host Jim Quinn stated on the November 6 broadcast of Clear Channel's The War Room with Quinn & Rose that the incident is evidence of "the chickification of schools, the feminization of society, and the war on masculinity." He then stated that "the goal of the public school system -- the feminists in the public school system -- is to make male behavior illegal, a crime."

Quinn read from conservative blogger Warner Todd Huston's October 31 blog post on the Georgia incident, stating:

If this is not further evidence we need more men in our schools (and not the Birkenstock wearing, ponytailed, softhanded, bike riding kind either), then what is? Having nothing but females running our schools is turning them into thoroughly feminized institutions where everyone has gelatinized spines and all turn to a fear-wracked lump of quivery flesh at the slightest evidence of anything rambunctious, gross, tough, loud, or -- ahem -- male.

As Media Matters for America noted, Quinn previously claimed that author, activist and Ms. magazine co-founder Gloria Steinem opposed Gov. Sarah Palin because Palin "declined to slaughter her own unborn child, Trig, to the goddess of feminism, even after doctors told her that he was one of those Down syndrome 'throw-aways.' " Media Matters also noted that Quinn has stated: "If you don't agree with the feminist scolds, then you're not a real woman -- even if you are a very feminine working mom." He added, "But even if you're an actual man, never mind a childless feminist who looks like a Bulgarian weightlifter in drag, you're a real woman solely because you nod your head like a windup clapping monkey every time you read the latest editorial from Ms. magazine." Furthermore, Quinn has repeatedly referred to the National Organization for Women as the "National Organization for Whores."

Talkers Magazine lists Quinn & Rose on its "Heavy Hundred" list, which it describes as a list of the "100 most important radio talk show hosts in America." According to the show's website, it airs on 18 radio stations and XM Satellite Radio.

From the November 6 broadcast of Clear Channel's The War Room with Quinn & Rose:

QUINN: All right, now get this. This is by Warner Todd Huston. You know, maybe this should have been a "Barking Moonbat" heads-up. "Remember when you were a young school kid and you drew a vampire during the week of Halloween? Remember how the blood was always dripping down from his menacing, pearly white teeth? Remember how it was all in good faith" -- I'm sorry -- "in good Halloween fun? Well, you can just forget about that mister, at least if you are a 5th-Grader in the Savannah-Chatham school system in Georgia. In Georgia, if you draw a vampire you get called a gang member -- even when you were assigned to make the drawing -- and then you get sent to the 'psychological evaluation' department of the school as if you are some mentally disturbed monster." You know, this is getting way too Soviet for me.

[...]

QUINN: "Sadly, this situation could have been easily solved without involving police, without punishing the kid with the stigma of psychological evaluation and then being kicked out of the school. All these foolish, emasculated school administrators had to do was ask the art teacher what was going on. That teacher would have already explained that, you know, he was assigned this, and I signed off on it, it's OK, and there you have it, no police, no mental exams, no expulsion needed. If this is not further evidence we need more men in our schools (and not the Birkenstock wearing, ponytailed, softhanded, bike riding kind either), then what is? Having nothing but females running our schools is turning them into thoroughly feminized institutions where everyone has gelatinized spines and all turn to a fear-wracked lump of quivery flesh at the slightest hint of anything rambunctious, gross, tough, loud, or -- ahem -- male." Yeah, that's right. This is the chickification of schools, the feminization of society, and the war on masculinity. Look, folks, the goal of the public school system -- the feminists in the public school system -- is to make male behavior illegal, a crime. But see, when you let the government run your schools, your schools will behave like government, and that is to say that they'll behave a little bit like Michael Moore mindlessly eating anything that he comes into contact with.

I've got a real problem with the right's obsession with trying to define masculinity.

According to them if you wear your hair longer, or you aren't a drooling douchebag who regularly chants "USA, USA, USA", then your a sissy.

If we're the sissies, then WTF are they the ones living in fear and hiding under their beds all of the time?

This is a pretty straight Rush Limbaugh ripoff. It's a big part of the wingnut act, tell pantswetting chickenhawks that they're manly because they support sending other peoples kids off to war.

They're scared stiff of Barack Obama , Rev. Wright, Nancy Pelosi and Harry Reid, they're terrified that we 'll have a president soon who's not afraid to meet with the dick-taters and other not-so-friendly world leaders. They're terrified that some people they've never met want to get married. Is it any wonder these shivering cowards need hours of am radio and Fox news every day telling them they're the real tough guys?

I think you may be missing the point.  There is a push in schools now to feminize the curriculum.  I've seen it with my children, things like only girls could be class monitors, unfair punishment between girls and boys, and othier things of that nature.  This does have a cumulative effect.

Dr. William S. Pollack has documented this in several works most notably REAL BOYS.  While I'm not going so far as to say they want to make male behavior illegal, I'll go out on a limb and say they definetly want to affect boys behavior.

Tbone hon, I know exactly what you mean!

Now I ain't exactly sure how one would define "male behavior" (do you mean stereotypical American male behavior, A-rab male, Japanese male?), but I reckon it must mean - and I'm sure Quinn would agree - that "male behavior" would include hypersexuality, hyperaggression, and a predilection to violence.

That's how a REAL American from REAL America acts!

Praise Jesus we got good folks like Quinn and Leonard Sax to lead the way back to the 1950's!

It's got me wondering how much less of a man I am for routinely cooking dinner for the family and doing housework.   But seriously, Quinn's take on masulinity is not the only problem I see here.

I believe male right-wing professional liars manifest their velvet-glove mysogyny by lashing out at "feminists."  This is especially true in the case of professional liars who have a female sidekick, like Quinn does.  He can't afford to alienate the entire female species when he has one sitting right next to him.  Therefore, whenever he has a bone to pick with women, even with something that has nothing to do with feminism or women in general, he has no choice but to play the feminism card.

So trying to keep gang recruiting and gang turf wars out of public schools is a chickification of said school? Let's have this woman spend a few lunch hours supervising an inner city gang infested 'hood high school. She's be tinkling in her fake fur boots after the first 10 minutes. Gang warfare is a huge problem for some schools and any belittling of teachers in such a school is extremely elitist, and disrespectful of someone who is dedicated to teaching in public schools. What a neo con idiot.

I live in the heart of Red State America, and the High School my daugher attends is infested with gangs.  Don't you dare propose more money for schools, though!  The Troglodyte mobs will eat you alive.

I agree that teachers sometimes get a little paranoid and "PC", but I really can't blame them, given the scope of the problems they have to deal with.

And I'm sure that what he might respond to that is this:

"Are you telling me that a 5th grader might be a gang member? That's just crazy..."

Except, that it's not. Gang members start early, and 5th grade, is not too soon to be looking out for it. It might just be something that the kid saw somewhere, but I'd be willing to bet that even 5th graders, are pretty smart about what is going on around them, and on the streets.

And anyway, how is checking out a possible gang affiliation, or symbol chickification of the American society? Nobody is telling you to stop acting like a man, although some might argue, that this guy doesn't act like a real man anyway, but what the heck? I'd love to introduce him to some of my most liberal friends, who also happen to be old school punk rock kids grown up, and who would beat him down in about 10 seconds for anything that he's said here, or in general. And then I could introduce him to my gun toting super liberal friends after that.

It's one of those situations where if the powers that be had ignored possible warning signs of trouble, then if something did happen everyone would want to know why the teacher didn't see it coming.

This is his new culture war - a "war on masculinity" waged by schoolteachers?  He must have missed the daily talking points committee meeting of right-wing radio wingnuttery and thought this gem up his own self.  Maybe there's a future for him as Palin's 2012 campaign spokesperson.

This was clearly an overreaaction by the teacher Melissa Pevey and the principal Valerie Johnson.

The drawing was a classroom project assigned by his art teacher who "helped the boy shade the sketched eyes to give the drawing an even creepier look."

""The assignment was to draw a scary mask or picture - basically a Halloween activity" said the boy's art teacher.

So the 5th grader completes his class assignment, with the help of his teacher...drawing a scary mask with blood drops and what does the school tell his mother? They tell her that "the droplets could actually be a gang symbol for the number of people he killed".

What does the boy get for completing his teacher assisted project? Sent home from school...and forced to undergo a psycho-evaluation.

Ye gods...the psycho-evaulation may have been more appropriate for the teacher and the principal...beauracracy gone berserk.

I was just more struck by the ignorance of the teacher and principal...who have more influence on our children's lives every day than some 'out there' radio jock.

            They're both ridiculous, IMO

By the way, talking today with a friend who was working in a local school with a boy of 10 who was going to write a Halloween story that included someone whose face had dripping blood, but was afraid to write that because he thought he might get into trouble.  My friend explained what a metaphor is, and suggested saying instead that "his face looked he had been in a car accident."  This boy loved the suggestion.

Having nothing but females running our schools... HAHAH! Wait. Does this mean he favors paying teachers real salaries and thus attracting more male providers? I remember a scenario in Poway Ca where a kid was raped by team with a broom. Thank GOD those pesky feminists weren't around to stop THAT playful masculine behavior. Vampires are traditionally gay and very anti-christian. What's the problem?

I once read that the founding fathers (whom the right love to invoke so often) wouldn't consider it strange for a moment to see men with long hair, or even earings... but that they'd be quite confused at the site of women wearing pants.

Yeah... I'm getting tired of these fearful cowards being the ones to define "masculinity."  Racism is a fear response.  Muslim bashing is a fear response.  Homophobia is a fear response.  And sexism is a fear response.

So is Quinn saying that inhibiting gang activity is a feminine activity ?  Wow, tell that to all of the male cops here in Chicago.
