SUMMARY: On The War Room with Quinn & Rose, Jim Quinn said: "You know, if you were a slave in the old South, what did you get as a slave? You got free room and board, you got free money, and you got rewarded for having children because that was just, you know, tomorrow's slave. ... Can I ask a question? How's that different from welfare? You get a free house, you get free food, and you get rewarded for having children. Oh, wait a minute, hold on a second. There is a difference: The slave had to work for it."

On the November 6 broadcast of The War Room with Quinn & Rose, co-host Jim Quinn compared "slave[s] in the Old South" to welfare recipients today, stating that the "difference" is that "[t]he slave had to work for" the benefits Quinn said they received. Quinn said: "You know, if you were a slave in the old South, what did you get as a slave? You got free room and board, you got free money, and you got rewarded for having children because that was just, you know, tomorrow's slave. So, you got a free house, you got free money, and you got rewarded for having children. Can I ask a question? How's that different from welfare? You get a free house, you get free food, and you get rewarded for having children. Oh, wait a minute, hold on a second. There is a difference: The slave had to work for it." The show then aired an audio clip of a buzzer sounding and a voice repeating, "Insensitivity!" Quinn then stated: "Ah, the truth stings, does it not?"

Talkers Magazine lists Quinn & Rose on its "Heavy Hundred" list, which it describes as a list of the "100 most important radio talk show hosts in America." According to the show's website, it airs on 18 radio stations and XM Satellite Radio.

From the November 6 broadcast of Clear Channel's The War Room with Quinn & Rose:

QUINN: This is by Frances Rice. You can Google this in HumanEvents.com. Just Google "Frances Rice," a black historian. Frances Rice says, "It should come as no surprise that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a Republican. In that era, almost all black Americans were Republicans. Why? Well, from its founding in 1854 as the anti-slavery party until today, the Republican Party has championed freedom and civil rights for blacks." Gee, you'd never know that walking through the hallways of a school today or listening to the media. "And as one pundit so succinctly stated, the Democratic Party is, as it always has been, the party of the four S's: slavery, secession, segregation, and now, socialism."

You know, I was thinking about this. You know, if you were a slave in the old South, what did you get as a slave? You got free room and board, you got free money, and you got rewarded for having children because that was just, you know, tomorrow's slave. So, you got a free house, you got free money, and you got rewarded for having children. Can I ask a question? How's that different from welfare? You get a free house, you get free food, and you get rewarded for having children. Oh, wait a minute, hold on a second. There is a difference: The slave had to work for it.

Republicans were indeed anti-slavery, but they were hardly pro-civil rights.

Gee. I've just been reminded what the elections of 2006 and 2008 were about: the 1870s.

People in receipt of government assistance get a free house? I quit! Now I want my house to be close to downtown and close to good voucher schools as well as cultural centres and perhaps a sports venue.

I love it when these lying sacks of sh*t try to draw a continuum from today's Republican party back to Lincoln's.

Sorry, but it just doesn't work.  Remember the racist Dixiecrats, those Southern Democrats who opposed desegregation and Civil Rights for blacks?  Where did they live?  The South.  How does the South vote?  Republican.

Is it that hard to connect the dots?

Let's see, what else did slaves get? They got lynched for trying to run away, they got whipped to near death for talkin back to massah, they got beat for not picking cotton fast enough, they got their families broken apart and sold off piecemeal to other plantations, they occasionally got raped by the massah, yeah, that's just like today's welfare.

BTW, why didn't Palin return all those clothes she bought with campaign money?

Sarah Palin left the national stage Wednesday, but the controversy over her role on the ticket flared as aides to John McCain disclosed new details about her expensive wardrobe purchases and revealed that a Republican Party lawyer would be dispatched to Alaska to inventory and retrieve the clothes still in her possession.

Of course they are! Don't you realize, Col? They hate  welfare, so in their twisted world welfare should be some vile, insulting, demeaning humiliating experience - because in their world, anyone who has to suffer that kind of humiliation will never want to go back on it again and will do everything in their power to avoid it at all costs.

The only problem with that concept is people really can't control the job market or the cost of living, and reichwingers have this nasty problem of looking down on someone who went on welfare and then have another nasty problem of never forgiving regardless of what the welfare recipient did with his life post welfare. It's just lifelong derision for the reichpublikkkans.

CNN's Rick Sanchez has the story. From AP:

Baylor University officials said they are investigating an apparent noose hanging from a tree the day Barack Obama was elected the nation's first black president.

Campus authorities also responded to a barbecue pit fire where several Obama campaign signs were believed to have been burned, interim president David E. Garland said.

"These events are deeply disturbing to us and are antithetical to the mission of Baylor University," Garland said in a statement Wednesday. "We categorically denounce and will not tolerate racist acts of any kind on our campus."

On Tuesday afternoon at the world's largest Baptist university, some students notified officials that a rope resembling a noose was in a campus tree, Garland said. Campus police took the rope and are investigating.

The student paper at Baylor, The Lariat, has more:

I'm not really certain what your point is, but I can tell you that much of Murtha's district is not at all "Democrat land."  Although I haven't seen or heard of anything as bad as nooses, I've heard plenty of stuff.  In particular, I was poll watching in part of Murtha's district, where I heard Obama referred to as a "coon".  Somebody else actually came to Obama's defense by calling him a "mulatto."  I didn't really know what to say to that one.  The other thing that struck me was the sheer number of confederate flags, which makes absolutely no sense in Pennsylvania.

So, there are probably no articles about that stuff because it's not as inflammatory as hanging nooses and burning effigies.  But, although Murtha's phrasing was regrettable, I can't doubt that he was being truthful.

"Insensitivity!" WHAT?!?!? That right there is why nobody with a working brain should put up with a wingnut p*ss*ng and moaning about "political correctness." This moron is enjoying a nice nostalgic revery about how great things were back in the days of slavery and how well off the slaves were. But that isn't quite offensive enough for this guy. He has to up the ante a bit by claiming that the vast majority of welfare recepients have great and wonderful lives and are buried in riches and goods that the government just hands to them on a whim. And let's none of us pretend that it's some sort of a stretch to find badly veiled racism in his little connection between slavery and welfare. In this country when one talks about slavery it is pretty much assumed that one is talking about the slavery of blacks in pre-Civil War America and not the slavery of the Israelites under the Egyptians or the Scots under the Romans or the Europeans under the Barbary Pirates or any other bull**** that these people try to whip out when the discussion turns to slavery. Insensitive? No. Calling this insensitive implies that it is a truth that one doesn't want to hear, language that is harsher than necessary or discourse that pushes the boundaries of civil behavior. This is intentionally offensive, hostile, insulting, untrue and useless speech. It's not "politically correct" to point this out. It's just correct.

As sunshine is the best disinfectant, perhaps we need to continue to disseminate these rants as widely as possible, and add information on who advertises or otherwise underwrites/funds this type of programming. We need to spend more time getting the sun to shine on the infestation that scurries about under the floorboards. Without a threat of advertiser boycott, without a threat of showcasing the direct association between hate mongerers and whoever bankrolls them, all we do is boost hits and encourage similar programming. Does anyone keep track of this info?

Well, Jim, no. The slaves didn't get free money. And what sort of reward did they get for having children? A pat on the head? And they didn't get free room and board and free clothes if the master didn't feel like it. They could work like animals all day and be beaten to death if the master felt like it. The master was under no obligation to give a slave enough food to eat, shelter from the rain, or clothes to cover them, any more than he had to feed his horse .

They did not have to work 'for it' because they could work and work and work and not be given anything. They were assured nothing.

      They had to work, period.

And if a master decided to shoot a slave to test his new rifle, there was no court in all of America that could call it murder--or punish the master with so much as a 50 cent fine for doing so.

Jim Quinn is a failed Pittsburgh disc jockey who got fired after being sued for making overtly sexual remarks on the radio about a female radio personality. He claimed that it was unfair persecution and in his new gig a right wing persona was born. His show is a local version of Michael Savage and just as phony and hateful. Pittsburgh has the misfortune of having an excess number of wingnut radio types and a newspaper, the Pittsburgh Tribune Review, that is owned by Richard Scaife, a right wing reactionary. So for many years , the people of Western Pa. have been saturated with propaganda sold as news. Quinn is a small man with a big mouth best to be ignored.

But ya gotta read his response to the email I sent to disparage his remarks:

"my point was not to do a redux of the details of slavery. the point was that servitude comes in different forms and can be accomplished by oppression or pandering. sorry if you didn't like the analogy but i sense you are more troubled by the truth it reveals. seven trillion dollars redistributed and more poverty than ever. and an entire community of Americans shackled by the mind formed manacles provided by their so called community leaders that keep them dependent. as for women being raped and dis-respected, i would point you to the collapsed civilization of the inner cities where black families have been, as you say "torn asunder" and young men call women "ho's" while seeking male role models in gangs.

(just for the record, there were slaves who we trusted by plantation owners to leave the property to secure supplies and services in town. they were often rewarded with a small stipend for their efforts. of lessor note were the indentured servants who worked for their passage to the new world plus living expenses)"

emphasis mine. So first I'm not understanding his analogy... then he ends by attempting to reframe and support his analogy.
