SUMMARY: On CBS' Face the Nation, Fox News contributor Newt Gingrich falsely claimed that Indiana and Utah -- both governed by Republicans -- have the "lowest unemployment rates in their respective regions." However, according to the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics records, neither Utah nor Indiana has the lowest unemployment rate in its region, and several states with lower unemployment rates are governed by Democrats.

During the November 16 broadcast of CBS' Face the Nation, former House Speaker and Fox News contributor Newt Gingrich said that Republicans "who are about to face this question of, how do you get the economy growing again" should ask Republican governors Mitch Daniels of Indiana and Jon Huntsman of Utah, "[H]ow did they get to the lowest unemployment rate in their respective regions?" However, the most recent Bureau of Labor Statistics records show that Gingrich's claim is false. In fact, neither Utah nor Indiana has the lowest unemployment rate in its region, and several states with lower unemployment rates are governed by Democrats.

In Utah -- defined by the U.S. Census Bureau as part of the Western Region -- the unemployment rate was 3.5 percent in September, higher than that of Wyoming, which had an unemployment rate of 3.3 percent under Democratic Governor Dave Freudenthal. Indiana -- defined by the U.S. Census Bureau as part of the Midwest Region -- had an unemployment rate of 6.2 percent in September, ranking eighth out of 12 Midwestern states. Iowa (4.2 percent), Kansas (4.8 percent), Minnesota (5.9 percent), Nebraska (3.5 percent), North Dakota (3.6 percent), South Dakota (3.2 percent), and Wisconsin (5 percent) all posted lower unemployment rates than Indiana's in September. Three of those states -- Iowa, Kansas, and Wisconsin -- have Democratic governors.

From the November 16 edition of CBS' Face the Nation:

LOUISIANA GOV. BOBBY JINDAL (R): Oh, well, sure, no -- I think it's great that Sarah Palin is speaking out. I think it's great that the governors that the speaker mentioned were -- are speaking out. I think the future -- I think the governors are gonna play a great role. And I think that, you know, our folks in Washington are gonna have important work to do, but I don't think all the answers and wisdom are gonna be in Washington, D.C. So, I think it's a great thing that she's speaking out. I think we're -

BOB SCHIEFFER (host): How do you feel about that --

JINDAL: -- going to need multiple governors.

SCHIEFFER: How do you feel about that, Mr. Gingrich?

GINGRICH: I mean, first of all, Governor Palin is a real asset to the Republican Party. She brought enormous energy to the party. She attracted very large crowds. But I would say, for example, to the Republicans who are about to face this question of, how do you get the economy growing again? Bring in Governor [Mitch] Daniels [R-IN] and bring in Governor [Jon] Huntsman [R-UT], and ask them, you know, how did they get to the lowest unemployment rate in their respective regions? Go back to a principled approach. If you don't understand health care, you can do a lot worse than to bring in Bobby Jindal who, maybe, may well know more about health policy than any other elected official in America and is doing an extraordinary job in Louisiana.

If you want to look at education reform, you can look at Governor [Sonny] Perdue in Georgia, you can look at Governor Haley Barbour in Mississippi. There are a lot of people doing smart things. The natural pattern in the news media is gonna be they know how to spell Sarah Palin's name. They've got it locked in their word processor. She's gonna be a much bigger story in the short run. But, I think, as she goes back to being governor, and as she works in Alaska, you're gonna see a group of governors emerge -- not just Sarah Palin. And there are 36 governorships up in 2010. And I think focusing on rebuilding the Republican Party from state legislature and governor to Senate and House is the right model. And I think that the Republican Governors Association is probably more important than the Republican National Committee in trying to get this done.

SCHIEFFER: So, you do not see her as the de facto leader of the party at this point?

GINGRICH: No, she's a wonderfully intelligent, aggressive, hard-working person who got, you know, hammered very badly by the press.

I can see why many conservatives consider Newt the party savior de facto. His commanding understanding of math alone is reason enough for awe!

There are a lot of states out there that would like to boast unemployment rates like Wyoming and Utah. 3.3 vs 3.5, hardly a significant difference, especially considering the population differences of the two states. The Midwest is another story, Indiana #8 when 4 of the 7 states with unemployment figures lower are governed by Republicans. Newtie sure could have picked a better example.

The two states he picked not only have Republican governors, they have Republican majorities in the legislature.

Of the four Midwestern states, Minnesota has a DFL majority.  I suspect that the other three also have Democratic majorities.  It would hardly serve his purpose to point to a state where the Democratic majority has a better claim on reducing unemployment than the governor.

This runs contrary to Newt's "American Solutions" shtick which is supposed to cross party lines.

      Dear newt,

Exactly what does the Governor of a State do or not do, to lower or raise the number of unemployed persons in that State?

      Sincerely,

      Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger

P.S., If only governing were as simple and easy as television pundits make it out to be.

        Dear Newt,

why, you should have listened to me! Now you just go and tell those ol' lazy governors to drill baby, drill! Why, some of them states are half a world away from some pretty big deposits, so all they need to do is buy longer pipes and they are bound to reach em! Then with a little wink of alaskan socialism those less fortunate states will be blessed with the same welfare avoiding grace that god blessed my state with!

        Love,

        Sarah Palin

P.S. By the way, you old washed up dirtbag, I will be the de facto leader in 2012. You better be on my good side then, you betcha!

I'm not really sure what a governor can or can not do in regards to employment except to help provide a good business climate through the legislative process.  But they get a lot of praise for low numbers and a lot of criticism for high numbers.

"No, [Sarah Palin]'s a wonderfully intelligent, aggressive, hard-working person who got, you know, hammered very badly by the press."

OMG this is infuriating.  It's always someone else's fault when a right-winger's ineptitude is exposed for all to see.

The only person at fault for Sarah Palin's interview responses is SARAH PALIN.

The only people at fault for the baggage that Sarah Palin brought from Alaska are the people who vetted her.

as far as i know, she is the only presidential/vice presidential candidate who never did meet the press or any of the sunday shows.  she also turned down numerous invitations to the today show and other morning shows and held no press conferences.   there was some whining one time about biden being on the today show and palin wasn't on.  ummm, she refused to come on.  but she's a victim.  the thing is what does the republican party think they're gaining by casting this idiot as a party leader.  half the country thought she was unqualified to hold the office.  vote for us, we're stupid.

And if they can not surpass her intellectually, the GOP is in deep trouble.

I can't figure out why everyone thinks this woman is the new face/leader of the Republicans. Republicans had a glimpse of her and know that she is not, for better words, the one. You betcha..This lady is a cross between Ellie Mae Clampett and Roseanne Barr. And Newt, when do we get to hear that infamous phone call...thief..crook.

Apparently, Simple Sarah has an uncanny ability to hyp-mo-tize the Troglodytes that comprise the GOP's Evangelical base.  All they have to do is put Simple Sarah and Joe the F***ing Plumber on stage, and the Troglodyte Brain goes into Sleep Mode, enabling the politicians to convince them that they will all be rich and have to pay more taxes under Obama.

Speaking of taxes, Joe the F***ing Plumber has a book deal.  Wow.  I guess the specter of higher taxes didn't hold him back, after all.

McCain campaign intentionally and publicly hid Palin from the media and chose to make her available only selectively.

If she bombs in her selective appearences and later the media gets blamed for it, after deciding who to talk to and when, one can only shudder at how much of a bigger public embarassment her unscripted appearences might have been.

I personally wish she would go away and not present herself as the face of the Republican party because if she is the face of the Republican party, the party is in a big trouble.

All she is is sound bytes (gratingly delivered) and nothing else. No substance. Small governement and lower taxes, anyone can say it. Without a belief and conviction, the words are meaningless.

Yeah.  It's not that she took a test and failed.  It's that she personally selected the easiest test she could possibly take, and still failed.

Katie Couric bulldog???  "What newspapers do you read" gotcha???  If any human being says anything positive about Palin and survives (as Gingrich did), it proves the media is still irretrievably broken.
